6TH EDITION
#MIT4LS2019
TRIESTE | OCTOBER 16-18, 2019
DIANA BRACCO President of Cluster ALISEI
Year after year, Meet in Italy for Life Sciences is increasingly becoming the leading opportunity for meeting and networking
among all actors in the life sciences value chain in Italy and Europe. This Trieste-based gathering will feature a rich bill of
events and participants of the highest caliber: an international opening conference discussing some of the most current
topics in the life sciences, with the participation of scientists, industry representatives, and representatives from European
and Italian institutions.
The ALISEI Cluster has grown over the years in part thanks to this important event, and today it is seen as a national hub
for pushing research and innovation towards new shared goals and approaches, further consolidating the success of
Italy’s life sciences sector worldwide.
In such a framework, Meet in Italy is an opportunity for all actors in the life sciences sector to get together and reflect. I
wish everyone participating in this sixth edition a most productive Meet.
MASSIMILIANO FEDRIGA Governor of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia
The Friuli Venezia Giulia Region is extremely proud to be one of the organizers of the 6th “Meet in Italy for Life Sciences”
event which is crucial for the life sciences sector that is increasingly gaining importance.
Over the past few years our Region – and Trieste especially – has turned innovation into a strategic factor of growth and
of important networks at the international level. This initiative is one of the milestones on the path that will lead us to the
ESOF (EuroScience Open Forum), the most prestigious European conference focusing on the interaction among science,
technology, society and politics, which in 2020 will make Trieste the European City of Science.
This nomination represents not only a well-deserved tribute to the city, but also a great opportunity for the whole of
the Friuli Venezia Giulia region that hosts an extraordinary number of nationally and internationally renowned scientific
institutions.
Our challenge is to consolidate relations between the research and industrial sectors. This extraordinary asset of our
region should not be limited to a mere list of data. It should instead serve as a starting point for triggering well-structured
actions that can provide tangible solutions within a system of innovation that can both enhance the already existing
human resources and strengthen a broad range of synergies with the social and economic fabric of our region.
ROBERTO DIPIAZZA Mayor of Trieste
Science is a bridge that brings together people, cultures, and knowledge to create development and innovation. Trieste,
of which I am honoured to be mayor for a third term, is a city of great culture and history, with a science system
renowned both nationally and internationally. Indeed, it has become the European City of Science in the EuroScience
Open Forum 2020.
Innovation and development are ingrained in the Trieste area’s DNA, and the fact that the city is hosting the sixth “Meet
in Italy for Life Sciences” is a source of pride that underscores Trieste’s central role on the international scientific scene,
whose best talents will be concentrating, on this occasion, on crucial aspects related to Life Sciences.
The scientific research system must work in increasingly close synergy with the industrial system if we truly want to
create development, growth, and social well-being. The shared goal must be to apply the conquests of innovation to
production in a wide array of sectors, such as Life Sciences.
As a country, we have the minds and the opportunities to play a leading role in the challenges of our time, and not
merely be spectators. It is with great pleasure that Trieste hosts this important event fostering dialogue and growth.
SERGIO PAOLETTI President of Area Science Park
Meet in Italy for life Science is a major international event where all actors in the life sciences sector can get together
and share experiences, both in terms of science and the launch of collaborative efforts between the research and
business worlds.
It was only natural for Area Science Park to embrace the idea of being one of the main organizers of this conference,
which reflects its nature as an agency devoted to the development of the local science and technology system,
encouraging the development of high-level skills in these sectors and putting them in touch with the business world,
generating economic and social benefits that improve our quality of life.
It is important to invest in projects with a high technological content that can accompany the growth of scientific
knowledge while providing industry with skills and facilities that can enhance its competitiveness. We achieve this
through laboratories such as Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste or state-of-the-art technological platforms in genomics and
epigenomics, which make possible, through an open lab approach, the constant interaction between the scientific and
productive sectors.
Events such as Meet in Italy for Life Sciences contribute to the dissemination of a culture of sharing and cross-
contamination, which is crucial for taking on the complex challenges of our contemporary world.
TRIESTE | OCTOBER 16-18, 2019
GIORGIO GEROMETTA Sole administrator of CBM-Smart Health Cluster FVG
The Centre for Biomolecular Medicine (CBM - Centro di Biomedicina Molecolare) that manages the Smart Health Cluster
of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, has accepted with great pride and enthusiasm, the task entrusted by the National
Technological Cluster in Life Sciences, ALISEI, of organising the 6th edition of Meet in Italy for Life Sciences 2019.
For both Trieste and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, this event represents both a challenge and an exceptional opportunity
to present its ecosystem in the health sector, which boasts sound links between all actors involved in the research and
innovation process – from the worldwide known researchers and clinicians to professionals in the health, advanced
education, finance, and insurance sectors. They are all coordinated and supported by local policies that increasingly focus
on competitiveness and job creation.
As in the previous editions, “Meet in Italy” will be a great opportunity for launching important debates and discussions on
the current topics in the Life Sciences. This is a sector that must grant equality, sustainability and efficiency to all citizens,
in addition to providing innovative solutions for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases.
This challenge entails both a sounder and more efficient collaboration between researchers, clinicians, and the private
sector in order to achieve a successfull Technology Transfer and a close collaboration among businesses. This is
possible thanks to complementary, transversal and interdisciplinary collaborations, which are the main features of Life
Sciences to facilitate innovation.
This virtuous circle has already been launched in our Region with the development of Smart Specialisation Strategies and
thanks to extensive networking between actors and substantial regional public funds – such as the ERDF ROP 2014-
2020, featuring 34 projects in which the research and business sectors collaborate, with a total of € 17 million funding
– and private investment that has fostered the growth and development of new innovative ideas and the marketing of the
products that were thus generated.
Trieste, as the European City of Science on the occasion of ESOF2020, and the entire Friuli Venezia Giulia Region with
its Smart Health Cluster – with over 150 companies, three universities, five international research centres, two Scientific
Research and Healthcare Institutes (IRCCS), two university research hospitals, four science and technology parks, and
regional incubators – will give this event even more added value, thus enriching it even further through creation of new
synergies, facilitation of contacts to obtain new, productive, collaborative and innovative projects in Life Sciences.
THE LIFE SCIENCES SECTORThe Life Sciences sector – which includes the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device manufacturing industries – has made huge advances thanks to the progress in the field of biomedical research that, in line with a global trend of continual increase in investments, has contributed to the greater development and well-being of society as a whole.
The Life Sciences sector in Italy plays a key role in Italy’s growth and competitiveness: the added value of its upstream and downstream activities represents about 10,7 % of the national Gross Domestic Product. The sector has all the prerequisites for becoming a fundamental element of Italy‘s economy and technological development in the near future and playing an important role at the global level in research areas such as personalized medicine.
The Life Sciences sector is represented in the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region by numerous academic excellences and international research bodies that generate knowledge and innovation to be transferred to the industrial sector.
