The Unimog Road-Railer

Reduced costs. Whichever way you look at it, working with the road-rail Unimog is more cost-effective. Not only do you save up to 60 per cent on the purchasing costs compared to a conventional shunting locomotive, you also save significantly on fuel consumption and other operat - ing materials. Plus, you save additional money regarding maintenance, service and routine safety inspections.

More possibilities. A road-railer vehicle is a fully func-tional shunting unit. With great tractive power, easy to operate – and much more versatile than any conventional engine. But the advantages of the Unimog road-railer do not stop there. It can a lso be used with a wide range of implements – for instance to clear snow, either on the track or in the plant yard. And it only takes a moment to get off the tracks and drive quickly to the next work- site. It is up to you. Powerful shunting performance with a new versatile dimension. Chassis Expertise: Shunting

Shunted around in a trice. With its unique chassis concept, the Unimog has everything that counts when operating on rails. Starting with its compact axle dimensions, which allow the Unimog to be driven via its road wheels on both standard and broad-gauge tracks. So no separate driving system is required for shunting work, just a retractable rail guiding system. Also on board is a powerful diesel engine, a high-performance transmission and a four-wheel drive system with differential locks on both axles – for best performance both on and off the road.

Great tractive power. With its compact axle design and special rail-compatible rims and tyres, the Unimog adapts perfectly to standard or broad-gauge tracks (1,435 – 1,676 mm). When operating on the rails, at speeds of up to 50 km/h, the Unimog is still driven directly via the vehicle wheels. The retractable rail guiding system only keeps the Unimog safely on the track. This has the advantage that the Unimog can make optimal use of the high friction coefficient between the rubber tyres and the steel rails to provide excellent traction and powerful hauling performance. A close-ratio transmission with eight forward and eight reverse gears, permanent four-wheel drive and locking differentials help convert the engine output into maximum pulling power on the rails. The result: a hauling capacity of up 1,000 t and maximum shunting speeds of 25 km/h – in both directions.

Pulling away smoothly. The Unimog’s hydrodynamic torque converter increases starting torque by 250 per cent. With only a few gear changes – without using a clutch – the Unimog is able to pull off smoothly – even with a heavy load in tow. This helps to protect both cargo and vehicle and prevents wear and tear on the clutch.

One-person operation. The Unimog can be fitted with radio remote control as an option to allow the driver to work more efficiently when coupling and uncoupling wagons. Or to position wagons precisely, for example under a loading chute, without the aid of an additional employee. Also, when reversing with rolling stock, it is possible to control the vehicle from the front end of the train without an additional driver in the cab. One- person operation via remote control saves time – and labour costs.

Chassis Expertise: On- and Off-Tracking

You would like to be as efficient as possible when working on the track? And spend less time getting to and from the worksite? Then the Unimog road-railer is just what you have been looking for. With its fast road speeds, flexible changeover between road and rail and its high off-road capabilities, it always gets to the worksite via the shortest possible route and is ready for action on the rails in the shortest possible time. So you save both time and money.

Simply get on the rails. The Unimog road-railer offers almost endless possibilities. When on- or off-tracking, for example, all you need is a level access to the track (a minimum length of approximately 5 metres), like a level crossing. Then you simply position the vehicle over the tracks, lower the hydraulically retractable rail guiding gear, and in less than three minutes your Unimog is ready for action on the track. Additionally, it is even possible to transfer onto the track at other suitable points anywhere along the line, thanks to a hydraulic turntable. And since the special Unimog chassis design boasts four-wheel drive and locking differentials, getting to where you have to on-track is never a problem.

Quickly on the scene. With the Unimog’s on-road speeds of up to 90 km/h and its excellent off-road mobility, the Unimog road-railer always gets you to your worksite via the fastest possible route. Once there, the easy-to-operate retractable rail guiding system gets you up and running on the tracks within a few minutes. Then, when the job is completed, you can get off the rails again just as quickly – and away you go to the next worksite. Thus, you save travelling time and track utilisation fees.

Easy to operate. Excellent view of all implements, ergonomic controls and a fully climate-controlled cab make it clear that strain-free driving and easy and safe implement operation are top priority with the Unimog. The hydrostatic drive system is an important labour-saving feature when working with a sweeper, branch cutter or snow blower. It allows you to increase or decrease the working speed of the Unimog sensi-tively, smoothly and without having to use the clutch. Use the hand wheel in a range from 0 – 25 km/h, while maintaining a constant engine and PTO rpm. With the appropriate equipment, you can even control the Unimog hydrostatically from the aerial platform, for example when carrying out mainten ance work on overhead lines.

Clearing snow. The works area and station tracks are enveloped in snow? That’s no problem. With little effort the Unimog is turned into a powerful snow-clearing machine: depending on the situation with a snow cutter, V-shaped snowplough or PTO-driven front-mounted sweeper.

Vegetation control. Whether with a branch cutter fitted to the telescopic arm at the rear or a mulching head at the front – the Unimog keeps the vegetation along the railway tracks in check. Quick change of implement to a track sprayer to combat unwanted weeds in the ballast bed of the track.

Cleaning. Especially for urban rail networks, cleaning the infrastructure constitutes a challenge. No matter whether it is cleaning tunnels with a washing brush or spray beam, cleaning grooved rails or removing leaves in tunnel entrances to avoid fires being started by stray sparks – the Unimog road-railer manages it in style.

Seasonal Maintenance Work

Fast growing weeds in the track’s ballast bed or on the embankment, branches hanging over the tracks or snow drifts which block sections of line: the Unimog road-railer clears the way at all times of the year.

Maintenance of the Track Infrastructure

Whether high-speed tracks or a tram network, regular maintenance work on the infrastructure is absolutely imperative if the rolling stock is to run safely. And when unexpected incidents occur, there sometimes has to be a very quick repair job done. With the Unimog road-railer help is quickly at hand when it is needed.

Maintenance of the Track Infrastructure

Versatile and cost effective. Finishing one job does not mean it’s already time for the Unimog to knock off. In an emergency a road-railer Unimog with a loading crane or aerial working platform is also able to tow away a tram or take freight wagons with construction material to a track building site. Versatility that is convincing.

Maintenance of catenaries. With its aerial working platform or basket, the Unimog is perfectly equipped for installing and maintaining overhead lines. Its advantage over a truck solution: it is a more cost-effective, low- maintenance drive concept on rails with direct drive via the vehicle’s wheels. Inspections are possible with the Unimog road-railer driven by remote control from the working platform.

Track maintenance: Keeping up the infrastructure of the tracks involves many challenges. But the Unimog is not intimidated! From grinding rails to towing freight wagons full of ballast, from ultrasonic rail inspection to being a compact precision rail screwing unit. From welding rails to loading goods at the track building site. And the Unimog brings all the materials needed with it: either in a freight wagon or simply in a road-rail trailer.

The cab has simply everything to make the driver’s working day as ergonomic and safe as possible. And the combined air-conditioning, heating and ventilating unit gives him a comfortable atmosphere to do it in.

Relaxed working – even when the day is long. The cab, with its generous amount of headroom and room to move, is manufactured from non-corroding high-tech fibre composite material which provides sound damping and heat insulation. It is extremely strong and rigid, and has spring-cushioned and damped supports. As the functional controls are mainly electric, the cab vibration is reduced to a minimum.

Fitted to suit your needs. Special fittings and equipment designed with the user in mind make the daily routine in the Unimog much more pleasant.

Easy to Operate and Ergonomic

Clear to read, easy to operate. The Unimog instrument panel is firmly installed on the steering column, making it really easy to read, irrespective of the driver’s position. Illuminated dials and 2 LCD multifunction displays provide all the important information. All the operating controls are installed on the central console, and the displays for the transmission and operating implements are fitted in logical clusters, easy to reach and easy to understand.

BlueTec® clean, safe, economical. The new SCR diesel tech-nology (selective catalytic reduction) from Mercedes-Benz. BlueTec® drastically lowers both nitrogen oxide and particle emissions, while optimising fuel consumption without reducing the performance of the diesel engine. An addi-tional catalytic converter reduces the nitrogen oxide with the additive AdBlue®. This chemically non-toxic aqueous solution is added from a separate tank. This way, the Unimog complies with strict European Union standards to reduce vehicle emissions, and has received the green “particle emissions” sticker entitling it to drive through all environmentally sensitive city zones.

Engines. Top performance is standard. The low- maintenance Euro 5 engines from Mercedes-Benz are state-of-the-art in every respect, perfect for a multitude of uses with direct-injection technology, 3 valves per cylinder, a turbocharger and an intercooler, combined to produce a steep torque curve, constant output over a wide rpm range and high power reserves. The combustion-air intake is positioned where dust levels are lowest. The thermostat-controlled radiator with hydraulic fan keeps the engine cool, even when it is producing high operating outputs at low vehicle speeds.
