Stamping and Modifying the Pattern

Stamp the pattern pieces for the Bird following the instructions in the stamp set. Leave room around the pieces for the following modifications:

1. Add stops to the Bird tabs at both ends by drawing a rectangle as shown below.

2. To prevent the tab on the Bird Body piece from catching on the mechanism, it needs to be extended. Line up a straightedge as shown below. Use the points indicated by the solid black dots to line up your ruler when drawing the extension. Repeat this on the other tab using the hollow dots as guides.

3. Score, cut and assemble the bird according to the instructions.

Making the Card

1. Print the pattern for the card onto colored cover stock using an ink jet printer. Be sure to deactivate any "fit to page" control options so that the edge of the card will remain on the edge of the paper when it is printed. Choose a paper that doesn't have a strong grain direction or one that has the grain running vertically.

2. Cut the card to size (8 1/2" x 5 1/2"), score across the middle and fold the paper in half. Cut 2 pieces of white cover stock to 3" x 5".

3. Cut two strips of text paper 1/2" x 1 1/2". Center each strip under each of the Bird Extensions and fold each third around to the front and glue the flaps together to make sleeves as indicated on the following drawing. The sleeves should move freely after being glued.

The Unexpected Dove Card

4. Open the card, lay the dove across the card, and glue the sleeves over the shaded squares that are printed on the card pattern.

5. Glue the two 3" x 5" panels over each of the sleeved mechanisms. Glue them on three sides only! See diagram below.

6. Cut a piece of cover stock 5 1/8" x 3 7/8" and decorate it as you wish. Fold the card in half and glue the decorated panel to the front of the card. Open the card 360 degrees to make the bird take shape.

Making A Bat

You can modify the dove to make another creature such as a bat. Print the patterns on page 3 on cover stock and cut out the shaded pieces. Stamp the bird on black linen 80 lb. cover stock, or similar sturdy paper. Lay the bat profile over the stamped bird and trace the shape. Leave the tail until the next step. Trace the bat wings.

Assemble the bat the same way as the bird. After you have attached the 3D body, trace its profile on the rear end and cut off the bird tail along the line. Open and close the bat making sure that the bat ears do not interfere with the movement of the body. Trim the ears if neccessary.

Attaching the Bat to the CardThe bat can be positioned anywhere you like along the top of the card. You can also face the bat to the left by folding the Mechanism piece in half the opposite way before attaching the body.

Cover the mechanism with the paper and design of your choice.
