NationalIntellectual Property

Copyrights, is not a well-know Topic in our country, but most people might know the importance it has. Costa Rica grants

copyrights protection to all artistic, scientific or literary creation, from the moment it is fixed in any tangible medium of expression. This topic is very broad therefore; we will focus on only the most relevant aspects, specifically on two areas: trademarks and copyright and related rights. Trademarks are distinctive signs, used to differentiate between identical or similar goods and services offered by different producers or service providers. Copyright and related rights protect rights of authors, performers, producers and broadcasters, and contribute to the cultural and economic development of nations. The purpose is twofold: to encourage a dynamic creative culture, while returning value to creators so that they can lead a dignified economic existence, and to provide widespread, affordable access to content for the public. To proceed with the deposit and registration of a work in the Registry of Intellectual Property of Costa Rica it is necessary to provide some information and documents, such as:

General information: Author’s (s) name with its complete conditions. Title of the work intended to be registered. Genre content. Indicate if the work is

unpublished or published and enclose a copy of the work.

Power of Attorney (POA) The applicant shall grant a POA in favour of trade mares and its lawyers.

Other documents if the application is filed by an editor, printer, translator or any other person different from the author, it is necessary to file evidence regarding the acquisition of the right.

Specific requirements according to the type of work. Aside from the general requirements, the Law establishes a series of specific requirements according to the kind or work, like unique artists work, computer programs or data bases.

In the last years, copyrights are involved in troubles with piracy. When one of the acts requiring authorization is done by someone else without consent. The unauthorized copying or copyright materials for commercial purposes or dealing in copied materials in know as piracy. In order to minimize the damage being inflicted by piracy, it will be important for a copyright owner to take swift action in seeking to prevent its continuation. For as long as piracy continues, he will be deprived of a portion of his potential market, and thus of the capacity to recover the economic reward for his creativity or investment. The theme is big and in our country it’s a fact this topic are out of control to the government and is usually look products to sold in the streets , rented or copied copyrighted materials, in full view of the authorities. So it is necessary that everyone be informed and made aware of the problem that these practices entail.

We take the issue of addictions with caution; because the actual society is susceptible to sensitive issues such as suffering from an addiction; the addiction affect every single person and anyone can become addicted in this days. The addiction needs to be treated by the affected person one he/she has agreed to have a problem with this habit. These days, we have more addictions than in the past because many of them were not considered addictions, such as sex, facebook, work, technology, cell phones, computers, gambling, shopping, travel and others. The young people are usually more susceptible to these new addictions because they have more free time, and now have more freedom at home. People can become addicted without knowing it, because one of the main features is the personality changes. Some cases are more complicated than others because the symptoms are not often easy to detect; sometimes they can only be detected by seeing repetitive patterns or mood changes such as anxiety, nervousness, isolation, or in others cases the symptoms are more related with affects the individuals health or personality, such as changes of humor, get mad more easy, red eyes, and others. Also, the stress is a current health problems, many people suffer from this condition and is more common than you think, people usually use different methods to relaxing and reduce the stress, because usually have tight schedule, and don’t have time to relax; a good idea to reduce the stress is going a spa one day or don’t start a computer on weekends.Recreational activities help people to relax; if the person affected tries to go another thing of a normal life is an activity out schedule the person automatic produce toxins with the effect of relax and be happier.

Registry to Replace All Old License

PlatesThe National Registry began

distributing new license plates to

drivers across the country. Due to

Costa Rica’s high number of cars

on the road, the registry has begun

a program to issue plates with

both letters and numbers.

The new plates have improved

security features to make it more

difficult for criminals to copy

existing plates. Security features

include a stamp of the Costa Rican

flag, a hologram and a sticker to

place on a vehicle’s windshield.

The system with numbers and

letters applies to new cars and

vehicles registering for the first

time. Owners of older vehicles can

apply for new license plates with

security features and old numbers.

New license plate numbers can

either be randomly assigned by a

computer or chosen by vehicle

owners. Choosing custom plates

can help drivers with multiple cars

avoid San José vehicle restrictions

by using two different plate

numbers.

The license plates come with

higher prices: 8,000 ($16) for

motorcycles and 15,000 ($30) for

autos with computer-generated

numbers. Custom plates cost

20,000 ($39).

According to the National

Registry’s Andrés Abrahams, all

drivers will be required to replace

license plates in the next three

years.

“In the second half of 2012, we will

start by changing the license plates

[but not plate numbers] of buses,

taxis, government vehicles and a

small portion of the motorcycle

fleet,” Abrahams said. “In 2013, we

will change plates on remaining

motorcycles and then start with

other cars.”

During the first three months of

2013, vehicle owners will be

asked to replace old plates every

three months with a system based

on plate numbers. License plates

ending in one through four will

need replacements by the end of

2013; plates ending in five through

eight will be replaced in 2014; and

plates ending in nine and zero will

be replaced in 2015.

In the meantime, owners who need

to replace their license plates due to

theft or damage should go to the

National Registry in Zapote, in

southeastern San José.

“We are giving auto owners enough

time to save the money they’ll need

to make the change. They’ll also have

time to pay their circulation permits

and make sure that cars are correctly

registered in the system,” Abrahams

said.

Only registered owners can

complete the process, he added.

One of the system’s goals is to

update registry records and ensure

that vehicle and motorcycle owners

are up to date with circulation

permits. According to National

Registry, 145,000 of 245,000

motorcycles in the country do not

have current circulation payments.

The National Registry is currently

building facilities to produce the

license plates. Automated equipment

manufactured in Germany and

specially made for Costa Rican

This new is very interesting

because every person in the

country who have a vehicle in

three years need to be change

the plates of their vehicles, the

reason is because in the old

plates we have six number and

all the number are complete

with users, for that reason the

National Registry need to

thinking in a good solution,

and looking around find a good

solution the alphanumeric

plates, that is a actual method

to doing a the vehicles plates.

The last week, I have the

experience of going to Plates

Department in National

Registry and this new system

have a lots of security’s codes,

the plates are doing for

deprived of freedom in regime

of confidence, in support of

reward the society. These new

systems have the intention of

doing better plates and more

AYA

By: Jonathan Smith

In Costa Rica the AYA (Acueductos y Alcantarillados) is responsible for bringing water to all habitants of the country, with a population of 4 million people, of which approximately 61% reside in urban areas, has made significant progress over the last decade in expanding the coverage of water services in urban areas.Approximately 99% of the urban population has connection to water supply systems which represents a significant increase of 92% in 1990. 48% have urban household connection to a public sewer or individual septic tanks. In 2006, the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC, for its acronym in English) has signed a loan for the Project to Improve the Environment of Greater San Jose aims to develop a treatment plant and wastewater facility sewer. The level of coverage in rural areas is lower. About 92% of the 1.7 million rural people have a connection to public systems of water supply and 97% to sanitation services, mainly through the use of septic tanks and latrines.

InternationalVanuatu Tradition

By: Valeria Prado

Despite the fact that we are living in a very globalized world there are some countries that still practicing their traditions. Vanuatu is an example of that. Vanuatu is a country located in the Pacific Ocean conforms by islands near to Australia.

They keep a lot of their culture. They speak their traditional language, the food, the agriculture and some rituals. They still practice an uncommon tradition known around the world. Vanuatu people practiced a ritual called N´Gol It born with a “Tamale Legend” that told a history about a women who cheat Tamale, her husband. Therefore she receives a hard punished so she dedicated to run away. She climbed and hid in a tree, but her husband found her. She was so afraid to Tamale that she decided to jump and her husband was behind her. Tamale´s wife survived because before she jumped she tied her ankles to some vines but he died because he did not.According to the tradition only men can jumped. They do it to demonstrate their masculinity and courage to women to let them know that they won´t accept be cheated again. Also is practiced to improve the yams crops. If nobody dies it is a signal of good crop. Men and children practice, they build a big towel of about 30 meters and jump tie to vines. The jump is joining with some dances before the ceremony; also the participants must paint their body. Children are allowed to jump when they are 8 years old or more.In the Pentecostes Island this ritual is considered an expression of culture. It has more than 2000 years to be practice. At first they use to do it twice at year but it gets so famous that they started to do it every Saturday of May and June. This attacted the attention of the commercial film. That is when some people take advantage of this ritual and started the most known bungee jumping sport practice. We think that it is a dangerous ritual but we support the idea that they keep the practice of a tradition. Men who practice this tradition are not forced to do it, obviously nit is very important for some of them to show their masculinity. Also we don´t agree on the fact they don´t agree on the fact that they don´t receive anything for the bungee jumping practiced. It is important to every country to keep their culture in every way.

In England have a customs very interesting, the first day of the month of May is known as “May Day”.

It is the time of year when

warmer weather begins and flowers and trees start to blossom. It is said to be a time of love and romance. It is when people celebrate the coming of summer with lots of different customs that are expressions of joy and hope after a long winter. Traditional English May Day celebrations include Morris dancing , crowning a May Queen  and dancing around a Maypole .Although summer does not officially begin until June, May Day marks its beginning. May Day celebrations have been carried out in England for over 2000 years, the Romans celebrated the festival of Flora, goddess of fruit and flowers, which marked the beginning of summer. The month of May  has many traditions and celebrations. For the convenience of the general public, many May Day activities have now been moved to the new May Day holiday (from 1978) on the first Monday of the month. This Monday is a bank holiday, a day off school and work.

Many of the May Day celebrations take place at the weekend as well as on the 'May Day' Monday. The weekend is known as bank holiday weekend because it comes with the extra day holiday on the Monday. On May Day, people used to cut down young trees and stick them in the ground in the village to mark the arrival of summer. People danced around the tree poles in celebration of the end of winter and the start of the fine weather that would allow planting to begin.Maypoles were once common all over England and were kept from one year to the next. Schools would practice skipping round the pole for weeks before the final show on the village greens. The end results would be either a beautiful plaited pattern of ribbons round the pole or a tangled cat's cradle, depending on how much rehearsing had been done. A traditional dance seen throughout the month of May is Morris Dancing. It is a traditional English form of folk dancing, performed by groups of men or women.Morris Dancing has been danced for hundreds of years, and passed down through the generations in the villages of rural England. The dancing is very lively and accompanied by an accordion player, a melodeon or fiddle player (Cotswold) or a noisy band with a drum (Border Morris or North West sides). Morris dancers wear different clothes depending on the part of the country in which they dance. They are often dressed in white with colored baldrics (colored belts) across their chests. Border Morris Dancers generally wear 'tatter jackets' and black their faces - probably originating as a form of

Administration is to organize, direct and control all the process of the company. To organize is to define the objectives in the short and long term. To direct is deciding who is going to do, how and when will do. To control is to review the objectives are being achieved and if not being met, correct actions to ensure compliance. The Administration is not simple, means analysis of many factors such as economic, financial, accounting, legal, structural, and others. Everything can be managed from government to a nonprofit organization. There are many methods, techniques and strategies to help the administration, and then we will explain two of them.

The 5S methodology

The 5S is the methodology of creation and maintaining well organized, clean, high effective and high quality workplace. It is the tool for helping the analysis of processes running on the workplace. Its result is the effective organization of the workplace, reduction of work’s environment, elimination of losses connected with failures and breaks, improvement of the quality and safety of work. The philosophy of the 5S has its roots in Japan. Name 5S is the acronym of five Japanese words of the following meanings:

Seiri (sort), Seiton (set in order), Seiso (shine), Seiketsu (standardize), Shitsuke (sustain).

Implementing the 5S rules should begin from trainings of productive workers in the range of the 5S’s elements and advantages from their usage. It is important that all participants of trainings will understand the need of using the 5S rules on the own workplace and will agree on the changes. During trainings it is essential to train the usage of all rules on the clear example, so that every participant can understand the methodology of the 5S’s elements. Very important fact is that these rules do not refer only to the productive positions, but also refer to the warehouse, office positions and others.

New trends on Business Management

1 S – Sorting Through the suitable sorting it can be identified the materials, tools, equipment and necessary information for realization the tasks. Sorting eliminates the waste material (raw materials and materials), nonconforming products, and damaged tools. It helps to maintain the clean workplace and improves the efficiency of searching and receiving things, shortens the time of running the operation.2 S – Set in order Especially important is visualization of the workplace (for example painting the floor helps to identify the places of storage of each material or transport ways, drawing out the shapes of tools makes possible the quick putting aside them on the constant places, coloured labels permit to identify the material, spare parts or documents etc.).3 S – Shine Regular cleaning permits to identify and to eliminate sources of disorder and to maintain the clean workplaces. During cleaning it is checked the cleanness of machine, workplace and floor, tightness of equipment, cleanness of lines, pipes, sources of light, current data, legibility and comprehensibility of delivered information, etc. Indispensable is also taking care of and maintenance the personal tidiness of the operator.4 S – Standardize Worked out and implemented standards in the form of procedures and instructions permit to keep the order on the workplaces. Standards should be very communicative, clear and easy to understand. Regarding this during preparation and improving, it should be involved all participants of the process on the given workplace, it means direct workers. The group knows the best specificity of its own activities, and process of elaboration and after that, usage gives them possibility of understanding the essence and each aspect of the operation. In the aim of assuring all the easy access, obligatory standards should be found in constant and visible places.5 S – Sustain Implementing the idea of the 5S will demand from workers the compact self-discipline connected with implementing and obeying the rules of regularity in cleaning and sorting. It leads to increasing the consciousness of staff, and decreasing the number of non-conforming products and processes, improvements in the internal communication, and through this to improvement in the human relations. It is also important to understand the need of executing the routine inspections of usage the 5S

Page 17: The Ulacit Times

rule. This inspection is executed by helping of so-called Check List and created on its basis the radar graph of the 5S, which serves to estimation of the workplace. The inspection of realization of the 5S rule is executed once a month by chosen team implementing the 5S rule – the control team. The 5S methodology relies on the creation and keeping well organized, clean, high effective and high quality workplace.

Lean Management StrategyLean is synonymous of efficiency and effectiveness, the key word is waste. This strategy appear as an antidote because it works on the systematically pursuing its detection, prevention and elimination. Lean management develops the process with higher quality that means less rework, less consumption of energy resources and lower cost. Lean is quality and quality is the critical principle of a successful business, because with quality the clients are happy. As Daniel T. Jones, the president of the Lean Institute said “For me Lean is actually about a new business model that delivers far superior performance for customers, employees, shareholders and society at large. Initially this superior performance is delivering exactly what customers want without any problems, delays, hassles, error and firefighting. Very quickly it is also freeing up the capacity to deliver a third more value from existing resources with few additional cost”The first concept of Lean Management born with a book “The machine that changed the world” (Womack, Jones, Ross 1991) Then at 1996 in other book “Lean Thinking” (Womack, Jones) he define five steps for a Lean transformation:

1. Identify the value2. Analyzing the value stream3. Create flow4. Establish a pull system, opposite to the push

system5. Search for perfection

The fundamental idea behind Lean is seeing that customer value is created by the actions of lots of different people across many departments and organizations. This focus on processes requires a very different form of Lean Management. Instead of managing using the rear view of the last month’s results lean managers frequently go and observe the current progress at every point in their value streams in order to help employees meet the current plan for the hour or the day and do plan further improvements. It is also Lean manager’s responsibility to lease with relevant functions for the resources to do so, within a policy management process that aligns all these activities with the needs of the organization and its customers.

There are some fundamental tools of the Lean Management. The main tools and methods used to achieve lean production are:• Total Quality Management applied to each of the processes, systems, products and services company.• Total Productive Maintenance, aimed at generating greater use of machinery and equipment at the lowest cost.• The fast tool change times and rapid preparation of machinery, equipment and even facilities.• The organization of production in cells.• Knowledge Management and Teamwork.• A continuous planning in its strategic, tactical and operational, involving each and every one of the members of the organization.• Versatility of the workforce.• Safe Systems or failure.• Detection and elimination of bottlenecks.• Coaching.• Continuous improvement of ergonomics and design accordingly job.• Fast control of the workplace.

Key objectives of Lean Management Make the company, its systems and processes, mechanisms of the highest quality producers of goods and services in the amount, variety, quality, time and costs required by the market by eliminating it all activities generating added value for the company and their customers.Produce goods in excess, without variety, quality lacking or does not comply with the specifications of consumers, was on schedule and cost more than willing to pay the market is or constitutes an enormous waste of resources. The Lean Management pursues the search for balance between:• Compliance with quality specifications.• The systematic elimination of waste.• And, respect for the process flows.

Page 18: The Ulacit Times

Conclusion

We think that these method and strategies are very important, business is always changing and there are some companies which their changes are the to succeed. Those new changes must be spread as model of business, to help some other companies to implement those ideas. In many cases this kind of strategies are not just in paper it is a way to think, sometimes could be very dificcult to implement it in a organization but, is necessary to find the way to do it. When the companies are receiving good results, the employees can be rewarded and many times it creates a happy environment for work. Bussines are like puzzles and it is necessary to work to find the right size of every piece. That will be great to find a balance in and out the company, because we will have happy and satisfied clients and employees. As students we support this new ideas, we analyze them and find it very interesting and usefull.

Seven Habits of Highly effective People

By: Jonathan Smith

In my personal opinion this habits are really important and helpful to be highly effective people. Beginning with the first I can ask myself what is to be an effective person?? For me it means to think and act ahead, I always knew that if you organize and plan things beforehand, life is going to be easier, why? Because planning things before they happened allows you to think in plan B´s, to buy things you need, to anticipate things, book appointments etc.

Once a teacher gave me an advice that I will never forget, he told me that if you do not have goals, life has no sense; since the moment he told me that I realize how important is to have motivations to go on and fight for what we want, establishing tasks or goals in your life could be one habit I would add to this list to be an effective person. Having a reason to conclude anything and to put some effort is what life is about, what would it be if there was nothing motivating us to move forward??

A habit from this list drew more attention than all the others for me, that was ´´Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood´´, I think that this not only helps people understand problems, it also helps to enhance social relationships, to improve communications, to find mutual solutions to the problems, it can be applied not only in a business aspect, but it can also help in life, in familiar relationships, with friends, boyfriends, sisters, and others. One thing that in my opinion, happens a lot among the people is the lack of understanding and sharing with others, the human being by nature is selfish, and the majority of time, we think first in us, second in us and third in others; that is why this habit should be part of the life of everybody and called the most my attention.

Using these seven habits for sure it will be helpful to be more successful and effective people, to be proactive in life, it would be obviously a good implement we could apply in our career, it does not means that if we do not follow all of these steps we will not succeed in our lifes, I think every person has their own ways to carry the day and win, but speaking in general terms, if we organize, establish goals, listen to others opinions, strengthen our weakness, understand others and encourage us to accept new challenges, will make of us people with a different, opened and positive mind, permitting us to have a better and happier life.

OPINION

My Personal Opinion

By: Jonathan Cordero Vega

My goals and objectives at the beginning of English was to learn more about of a foreign language because English language is idiom official on the world and also there are a lot of opportunities of jobs in our countryThe performance during the class and projects was good because I worked in group a lot of time and I tried to do team work that’s I learned more about structures, pronunciation, connector, and new words, verbs.I need to say that I tried to do my assignment, homework and attended special activities so sometimes I couldn’t go to class because I work far of the University and I had several business trips but I always did my obligations. In this course I can do different exercises, I did oral presentation, and we uses technological tools for example to do blogs, use blackboard, upload documents and other things.I will practice English with other people and following with training because I know my areas to improve such as fluency.

My Personal Opinion

By: Valeria Prado

Finally I finished (really hope so) the English courses. I really like this course, the teacher is very passionate for her work and that makes a difference with some others teachers that don´t feel anything like that. I always said that this university choose as teachers people who known about the topics but did know how to teach them. In this particular case I can´t said the same thing. As the others courses that I have taken on the university, I always hope to learn. Since I was on the school I felt very interesting for this language then with the globalization the knowledge of this language was almost necessalary, so I felt more interested. Because of that my objective on this course was to learn as much as I can of grammar and vocabulary, principally but I know that I need more than that to be bilingual. Despites the fact that I like this course sometimes I felt like for the teacher and for some classmates it was very difficult because in this course are a lot of people that aren´t like an advanced level, me included. So the course wasn´t advanced level, as the other eanglish courses of the university. For that reason I think that my performance wasn´t the best. Althougth I have stage fright I tried to participate in class as much as I could but some works I was very dedicated but some others I wasn´t. I know that doesn´t an excuse but I think that I don´t feel that challenging assignment, besides it was a lot of homework and projects I didn´t feel that. One of the projects that I like more was the E-porfolio, I really like the dynamic and everything, I really enjoin it. Other thing that I like of this course was that the teacher really know how to explain, everything grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, verb tenses, everything; for that reason I a little of everything, I emphazice on the fact that I learn how to write an essay, in this writing I´m not doing the introduction, develop and concluded structure because is a reflection but when I have to write an essay I always remembers the guidelines of the teacher. Despite everything I learned I know that I still need to learn a lot to be bilingual, I have to work with my stage fright, because I´m not that bad with the speaking but when I have to talk in public I felt very nervous and I lock and sometimes my mind turn in white, sometimes is very difficult for me because I know what I have to said I just can´t, the same happens in Spanish. Also I need to learn vocabulary and grammar structures. Any way I really like this course I want to congratulated the teacher in this essay because I forget to do the CEPA, and I want to let her know that I´m satisfaid with her performance everybody can notice that really loves her job and I appreciate that still people who worked with love and passion not just for money.

ReflectionBy: Jonathan Smith

My name is Jonathan Smith, I am studying business administration this is my third semester in college, really what I expected from this course was to learn more to let go more with my conversational English, as I am a person who lacks confidence to speak English . Expected to be an English and other courses I have taken very theoretical and tired of so many hours a week.

The performance during the course of the semester, I gave percent necessary, honestly I tried not to 200 percent but did meet. I quite like the classes were completely different from all the courses I have taken in English, dynamic, interesting and innovative. I am happy because the teacher has been very good with class, and it was very nice about going on tour.

The dedication I have given in this course was normal, as I mentioned before I tried hard enough, but I fulfilled expectations. But all jobs are different, I like the idea that the teacher has to take lessons. What I call the most attention were the presentations. I learned a lot in this course really increased my vocabulary quite, grammar I have improved and I have corrected several mistakes he did.

Throughout this semester I learned a lot, new vocabulary, new friends, I have more confidence to speak English. I have to overcome obstacles is to let go more, be more concise with the ideas that plant, but all with the standard practice is improved. I have to keep reviewing. I want to thank the teacher for this course so different from others and the new that has taught me.
