Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'’’ Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: ‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'" Jesus answered him, "It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'’’ Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. "All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me." Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'’’ Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. Fasting= abstaining from food or drink

Why Fast?

A Wesleyan Fast

What is A Wesleyan Fast? Begins Thursday at 3:00 PM and ends when you eat your Friday evening meal. Make sure to drink plenty of water when fasting.

Fasting options:• Complete fast (water only)• No-solids fast (allows milk, juice, coffee, tea, etc.) • No-meat fast or other type of fast

Thursday Evening Prayer: Lord, I offer you the coming day’s devotion of prayer and fasting and thank you for Jesus’ example. Help me to die to myself, leaving less of me and more of you. Make me new in Christ. Feed the starvation of my soul, of my thoughts, and of my will through Jesus Christ. Amen.

Friday Morning Prayer: How great and gracious you are, God! I pray for your kingdom on Earth, for peace, justice, healing, and hope. May the whole world know your amazing grace and salvation through Christ. I dedicate myself to you today. Fill me with the power of your Holy Spirit, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Friday Midday Prayer: Thank you, God, for all your gifts, especially those I won’t enjoy today, for the inner nourishment of your presence and for new vigor in my prayers through fasting. Thank you for family and friends. Thank you for Jesus, Bread of Life. Amen.

Prayer for Breaking the Fast: To you, God, I have offered this day of prayer and fasting. Through the gift of your Holy Spirit empower me to share my faith story and the good news of Jesus with others. Help me to serve you faithfully in the world through Jesus Christ, my only Lord and Savior. Amen.

“Those who deny themselves will be sure to find their strength increased, their affections raised, and their inward peace continually augmented.” –B. WILSON

“Fasting confirms our utter dependence upon God by finding in him a source of sustenance beyond food.” –DALLAS WILLARD
