Kelly Tooley, President

April is Volunteer Appreciation Month and as such,

I’d like to begin by thanking Unionville Curling

Club’s countless volunteers. UCC is fortunate to

have amazing volunteers. Whether serving as a

member of the Board of Directors or a section com-

mittee; organizing social events for our members;

contributing to the atmosphere and maintenance of

the building itself; giving time to instruct our mem-

bers on the ice; or giving in whatever way one can,

each and every one of our volunteers is important to

the operation of our club and the experience that our

members enjoy. The Board of Directors will recog-

nize our Section Heads at a dinner with the President

on May 1st. Each section has also been allocated a

budget to use towards thanking their volunteers.

At this time of the year, it is also important to thank

and recognize our employees. Our bartenders and

those who help Jim with the ice are to be commend-

ed for their service and dedication to Unionville

Curling Club.

Completing his 26th season as our Ice Maker, we

once again recognize Jim Kinzinger for his spectacu-

lar ice all season, but also for all of the other work he

does for us throughout the year. This season started

with the installation of a new ice compressor and

dehumidifier. Jim spent countless hours battling with

the dehumidifier when it was first installed, even be-

fore our curlers took to the ice at the beginning of

the season. Jim’s attention to detail and pursuit of

perfect ice is UCC’s gain. For this, we once again

extend our sincere thanks to Jim for a great season!

As our Manager Fred Berkhuizen takes on numerous

roles within our club, both in the view of our mem-

bers and behind his office

doors. In the course of a day,

Fred often takes on the role of

bartender, instructor, mainte-

nance man, accountant, sales-

person, employee supervisor,

pay roll manager, bar manager,

building manager, secretary,

groundskeeper, and plumber…

Just to name a few! As mem-

bers we sometimes forget the

true expanse and demand of

our manager’s job. Neighbour-

ing curling clubs hire a number

of people to fulfill these posi-

tions or are housed in country clubs who hire a curl-

ing manager to focus solely on the curling related

aspects of their club. Fred’s dedication and passion

towards Unionville Curling Club is to be commend-

ed. The Board of Directors sincerely appreciate the

work that Fred does on a daily basis and throughout

the course of the year.

As noted above the season began with the installa-

tion of a new compressor and dehumidifier thanks to

a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Since

we were able to purchase these at a lower cost than

first quoted, we had some funds remaining from the

grant. The Ontario Trillium Foundation has agreed

to let us use some of the remaining funds to cover

the cost of an Ice Maker’s Mistress (an ice monitor-

ing system), as well as two other projects that were

to be completed under our Capital Reserves this

summer. The cement ice pad will be painted this

summer and the carpet on the backboards at both

ends will be replaced. This will likely still leave us

with some funds from the grant that will need to be

returned to the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

Members are reminded of our upcoming Annual

General Meeting on Monday, June 16th at 7:00pm.

At this meeting, we will officially say our thanks to

John Nicol, Sue Beard, and Sandra McLaughlin for

their commitment as Directors on the Board over the

past three years. We will elect our incoming Direc-

tors and provide an overview of the club’s events

and financial statements from the past year. The

Unionville Main Street Revitalization Committee

will provide further information on the proposed

plans for Main Street Unionville and its impact on

UCC. The Board of Directors will also present a

very deserving member with the Recognition of Ex-

emplary Contribution to Unionville Curling Club

award. Please be sure to join us at this meeting.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to

thank Simon Lau for acting as The Tradition editor

for the last three years.

Best Wishes to all members for a safe and relaxing

summer! I look forward to seeing you all back on

the ice in September! UCC

UNI ONVI LLE SWEEP Jane Morgan, Chairperson

In a fitting end to a great curling season , the Union-

ville Sweep were thrilled to host the Markham Fire-

fighters in a friendly competition. The athletes and

coaches extend their sincere thanks to Fred, Jim, the

Board of Directors and the members at large for sup-

porting our Special Olympics program. UCC

Kent Tomasik, Chairperson

We have now completed our inaugural season of 24

teams in a three-ranked-divisions format. The feed-

back from our members at our annual section meet-

ing on April 15 was all positive.

Because this was our first go around with this format

and rules, we reviewed all aspects of our season to

determine if any adjustments or fine tuning was ap-

propriate. We did rescind, revise and add a few

items to the rules, to get the section started for the

upcoming season. As was the case last year, the

Open section is again looking to expand if ice time

becomes available.

Third Schedule Winners:

A Division: John Bell, Dwayne Vincent, Jeff

Guiler, John Guiler

B Division: Dustin Krill, Kent Tomasik, Gail Kita-

gawa, Stephen Kitagawa

C Division: Tom Kalvik, Simon Lau, Sandy

Swailes, Roger Pavan

It is interesting to note that with three schedules of

three divisions, the section had nine different teams

winning prizes.

Championship Day:

Champions: Jim Bell, Andrea Bell, Ray Leroux,

Anne Leroux

Runners-up: Greg Nelson, Glenn Nelson, Donna

Duncan, James Nelson

This continues to be a growing section in our club

with one new full team and several individuals or

couples already expressing interest in joining next

season. With a ranked format, lots of teams and of

course snacks, there is a spot for all curling abilities.

Thanks to our committee and helpers: Ray Leroux,

Anne Leroux, Janice Cook and Dave Blancard.

Enjoy the off season. UCC

BANTAM / JUNI OR Brian Daffern, Chairperson

The Bantam / Junior section has had a terrific year!

Each week curlers participated in skill development

lessons and league play, followed by socializing

over snacks. Points were gained by a combination

of wins and attendance leading to Championship

Day.

Congratulations to the team of Sarah Wallace, Pat-

rick Bayne, Madeleine Robert and Cameron Mark

for winning the Bantam Championship.

Congratulations also go to the team Jonathan Ku-

nihiro, Michael Daffern, Conner Orr, and China Pal-

mateer for winning the Junior Championship.

The section had a number of curlers that represented

the club and their school in competitive events:

The team of James Nelson, Emerson Steffler, Joshua

Gravelle, and Timothy Mark represented Markham

High and won the silver medal at the Gore Insurance

provincial event.

Rachel Snelgrove, and Kirsten Olsen also represent-

ed Markham High and finished fourth at the Ontario

high school championships (OFSSA).

The team of Justin Chung, Emerson Steffler, Bran-

don Welham, and Michael Daffern won the OCA

Zone 6 Bantam Boys B-side final.

The team of Rachel Snelgrove, Sarah Wallace, Mae-

gan Daffern, Kirsten Olsen won the OCA Zone 6

Bantam Girls B-side final.

Thank you to the many coaches and volunteers that

make the program a success. A special thank you to

John Wallace who took on the role of draw master

this year, and has agreed to lead the section next

year. UCC

George Otani, Chairperson

Our 2013-2014 curling season has come to an end

with resounding success. We completed seven

monthly bonspiels, two Team Draws and our weekly

Tag days throughout the year.

First thanks to those members whose help made the

Day Men’s section a great success. Individuals who

have volunteered their time to run our daily Tag

days include John Chipperfield, Gordon Barry (who

will have a knee operation in May; we wish you a

speedy recovery), Rick Dennis, Randy State, Bob

Taylor, Al Johnston, Doug Fettes and Sam Muraka-

mi. Our monthly bonspiels have been another suc-

cess with Tom Keith running each and every bon-

spiel. Thanks for your commitment, Tom!

Another group that deserves recognition are those

members who volunteered to do the ‘behind-the-

scene’ work (i.e., kitchen duties). Fraser McTavish,

Jim Sale, Derwyn Smith, David Rushton, John Guy,

Rick Dennis, Graham Northcott, Ron Harris, Brian

Monti, Barry Dales, Gary Fletcher, Doug Fettes,

Sonny Bessant, Paul Clodd, David Ingalls, Dave

Carolyn Hoover, Chairperson

Let us begin by congratulating the third draw win-

ners. It was exciting to see new curlers win their

section. Congratulations to all our winning curlers:

Third Draw Winners:

Draw A - Al Johnston, Carolyn Hoover, Marilyn

Parsons, Heather Dubreuil

Draw B - Chris Gaudreau, Jim Lawton, Judy

Maguire, Frank Fazzari

Draw C - Lorne Jessop, Donna Montgomery, Wayne

Alexander, Claudia Straka

Draw D - Simon Lau, Michael Myers, Lillian Mok,

Laurie Myers

As we wrapped up a successful Mixed curling sea-

son, we began our post season. Our 12 team

playoffs kicked off on April 4th with teams Lau,

Bondy, Gilberto, Lowe, Johnston, Cook,

Berkhuizen, Jessop, Malinos, Tomasick, Gaudreau

and Elliott.

After three rounds of exciting playoff curling, our

teams competing on Championship Day were:

Champions - Jeff Cook, Janice Cook, Derwyn

Smith, Helen Saunders

Runners-up - Chris Gaudreau, Louise Ferri, Judy

Maguire, Frank Fazzari

Congratulations to the winning team.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the

Mixed Committee (Barry and Carolyn Hoover, Ka-

ren and Dirk Mooney, Scott McPherson and Susan

MacDonald, Doug and Carol Wolfe, Anne and Ray

Leroux, Ellen Racey, Wayne and Jane Alexander,

and Derwyn Smith) for all their work over the

course of the 2013-2014 curling season. It truly

takes a team of people working together to success-

fully run the largest section at UCC. Many hands

make light work. The committee organized four

bonspiels: Potluck, Tankutta, Life’s a Casino and

Skins. Of course we also provided snacks for all to

enjoy after each of our games.

This year we had two firsts; the development section

in the first draw and our first Mixed Section Meeting

and Social in April. From member feedback both of

these additions were a great success and will be re-

turning next year. We are always looking for mem-

bers who would like to join the Mixed Committee.

If you are interested in learning more about volun-

teering, you are encouraged to send an email to Car-

olyn Hoover at [email protected].

We would like to thank Anne and Ray Leroux for

their tireless dedication to the Mixed Section as they

retire from the Mixed Committee. Anne and Ray

spent hours working for the Mixed section over

many years. They were involved in so many things,

but will be best remembered for the great “Life’s

a...” bonspiels, the introduction of the Tankutta bon-

spiel, and fabulous snacks. Anne and Ray will be

continuing to work hard as they support the Open

Section and Ray will continue to be representing

Unionville in a host of external club competitions in

2014-2015. If you see Anne and Ray, please thank

them for their outstanding contribution to the Mixed

section.

We would also like to recognize our sponsors, Don

Garland from Dixon Garland Funeral Home and our

second year sponsor, The Marleigh Retirement Resi-

dence. The generous support of our sponsors greatly

adds to the success of our section.

The committee would like to give a big thanks to

Fred Berkhuizen, our Club Manager who works

hours behind the scenes making sure things run

smoothly. Also we would like to thank Jim

Kinzinger and his team for providing the best ice in

Ontario. Finally we would like to thank the UCC

Board of Directors, and in particular Kelly Tooley

for her outstanding job this year as Club President.

As is in any volunteer run organization, the strength

and dedication of the volunteers are reflected in the

success of the organization. Thank you to all for

your time and effort on our behalf.

Close to 50 people attended our Mixed Section Year

End Social and Member Meeting on April 5th. The

turnout was amazing, as was the dinner and conver-

sation. We are busy consolidating the input from

the round table conversations and surveys and will

be sending out a summary in the next few weeks.

Thank you to the group leaders, the note takers and

most of all the membership for your candid feedback

and conversation during the small group discussion.

Your input will go a long way to assist the Mixed

Committee as we strive to continue to improve the

experience of our Mixed section members. If you

were not able to attend the meeting, we still would

like your thoughts. Please take the time to complete

the Mixed Section Survey online before May 8th.

The survey is available on the UCC website, under

the Mixed section, at the following link:

In closing, thank you to our curlers for a great year.

We trust you will have a wonderful summer and

look forward to seeing all of you again in the fall! UCC

There were more rinks entered this past season as

stick curling is growing. The 2014-2015 Regionals

will be played in last week in November and first

week in December. The Provincials will be held in

Collingwood in March 2015.

Stick clinics continue to be held in many clubs

throughout the season. UCC

S T I CK CURLI NG Marilyn Parsons, Chairperson

When Carl Glatt, Ross Baker, Dave Bayliss and Ian

Munro took to the Bancroft CC ice for this season’s

Travelers Provincial Stick Curling Championship,

they gave a repeat performance of claiming the OCA

banner. But it was not easy! Competition was

tough this year. Competing in a round robin playoff

against seven other rinks from across the province,

Team Glatt finished in a three way tie for first place.

Forced to play in two tie breakers, this UCC team

prevailed in the first tie breaker needing only six

ends for the win. In the second tie breaker the game

went eight ends and down to the last rock before

Carl, Ross, Dave and Ian claimed the Provincial

banner.

L I T TLE ROCKS Stephen Orr, Chairperson

Looking back on the 2013-2014 season I can only

think “Wow!” While our numbers were down a lit-

tle from last year (due in part to a number of kids

“moving up” to Bantam), the program continues to

move forward and we introduced a lot of new curl-

ers (and a few new adults) to the sport. But more on

that later.

At the in-house Teddy Bear bonspiel, we had a full

turnout with 24 curlers on the ice for two games of

un-coached competition. At the end of it all we had

our winners in the form of Team Moore with Jack

Moore at skip, Thomas Olsen at Vice, Fiona Lam at

second and Ryan Koo at lead. This is the second

year in a row that Ryan has had the honour of get-

ting his name in the ice.

We also continued to expand the horizons for a lot

of young curlers by giving them the opportunity to

participate in out-of-club bonspiels. We may have

set a record this year, with one or more teams at An-

nandale, Whitby, Unionville, Bayview, Thornhill,

Donalda, Brampton, Tam Heather, King, and KW

Granite Club bonspiels. Notably a Unionville team

once again won the A-event in the Bayview spiel

final.

Buried in that long list is the first inter-club Little

Rocks bonspiel hosted by Unionville in recent

memory. That happened before Christmas and was

a very successful first event. The section is hoping

for the opportunity to do that again should the ice be

available.

In the closing weeks of the season we brought back

the popular (and hectic) Bring a Friend Day, with

almost 40 curlers on the ice. The following week-

end was Bring a Parent Day, with almost 40 curlers

again. We are also happy to see a couple of our

kids inspiring their parents to join adult leagues, and

hope to see more of that in the new year.

In closing, thanks to all of the volunteers that make

this program possible. Adrian Accinelli is both an

on-ice coach and draw-master for our out-of-club

spiels. Also on the ice are Andy Moore, Melissa

Anderson-Woodward, Philip Blachier, Neil Lindley,

Megan Heaphy-Orr and a couple of others from time

to time. In addition, Sarah Ing has been invaluable

helping out behind the glass to provide snacks and

keep the dining room organized.

Looking forward to getting the kids back on the ice

next season. Have a great summer! UCC

winners: Bev Styba, Theresa Arbuthnot, Deborah

Nesbitt and Anne Kennedy.

Hearty congratulations also to our second and third

draw winners:

Second Draw:

Tuesdays - Ruth Gemmell, Janice Cook, Sally El-

liott, Kimberley Dunsmoor

Wednesdays - Paula Wilson, Halinka Johnston, Mar-

garet Bugdahn, Bernadette Kerr

Thursdays - Christine Couperthwaite, Patti Shevlin,

Third Draw:

Wednesdays - Sara Harvey, Teri Burns, Mary Jo

Thursdays - Alex Trought, Robbin Coedy, Linda

Our closing dinner and AGM was held on April 14.

A delicious meal, lively discussion and laughs were

had by all.

It was our goal this season to award prizes to teams

who achieved full eight-end games in the two hour

time slot. Sadly, no teams achieved an eight-end

game on any of our three nights this season. We’ll

try again next season!

Championship Day on April 12 was wonderful. The

Business Women curled in the popular evening time

slot with a large crowd on hand to watch. There

wasn't a dry eye on the ice when the bagpiper piped

us on the ice for the opening ceremonies. Congratu-

The last two draws went quickly in our Business

Women's section. It’s hard to believe it's time to

Thanks to the new UCC “test drive” program and

word-of-mouth we welcomed many new curlers to

our section. However, enrolment in our Business

Women program remained down by 16 in the last

two draws with an empty sheet on Tuesday and

Thursday. Top priority over the off-season is to

spread the word and fill all three nights with more

new faces for 2014-2015!

two nights with a third night devoted to skill devel-

some surprising upsets in both the draw playoffs and

the team entry. Emerging from the draw playoffs

were the following finalists:

Champions - (Team 1) Patrick Rioux, Alan Wilkie,

John Burns, Stephen Bayne

Runners up - (Team 7) Bill Mack, John Guiler, Mat-

thew Mackness, Bill Minor

This game was a back and forth affair with Patrick

Rioux’s team prevailing. Finalists in the team entry

championship were:

Champions - John Bell, Mike McCormick, Dwayne

Vincent, Dave Blancard

Runners up - Greg Nelson, Jeff Parsons, Charles

Giliberto, Stephen Kitagawa

The Bell team was also the winner of the “Grand

Aggregate” with the best overall record during regu-

lar season play. They will represent the club at the

play downs for the Dominion Insurance Club Curl-

ing Championships.

Finally as the season draws to a close it is important

to acknowledge the hard work and support of the

Men’s executive, Bob Penner (Draw Coordinator),

Charles Gilberto (Assistant Draw Coordinator) and

Jim Bell (Team Entry Coordinator). UCC

The Men’s section also enjoyed another bout of the

“Battle of the Dons,” pitting the followers of Don

“The Tombstone” Garland against the henchmen of

Don “The Exhumer” Bubar. This was a very enjoy-

able event. Thanks are due to both of the sponsors,

Don Garland and Don Bubar. Without their assis-

tance events such as this would not be possible.

This year saw the “Garland Gang” jump out to what

seemed to be an insurmountable lead only to have

the “Bubar Boys” come storming back with an out-

media are available. In addition to The Tradition,

members may access information on the video

screen above the bar, the UCC group on Facebook,

and the club website. The Board of Directors is re-

viewing if and how The Tradition might fit into the

club’s communications strategy for the future. At

this time no official direction regarding the future of

The Tradition has been made public.

Numerous members of UCC have assisted me with

the production of The Tradition during these last

three curling seasons, spanning 2011-2014. Thanks

to the club presidents and section chairpersons as

contributors of content, Brian Monti as my predeces-

sor and mentor, Jim Dibblee as the online publisher

for the UCC website, and Fred Berkhuizen as publi-
