One hundred and fifteen people sent an RSVP; we had 95 sign in. First of all, I’d like to thank Amir and his associates for making this meeting happen at LA Cleantech Incubator and the DWP. Also, I’d like to thank our four speakers: Ben Stapleton from LACI; Jevon Lam; Mark Gentili; and Val Amezquita from the DWP. Ben presented LACI; Jevon presented Water Conservation Strategies; Mark presented Smart Meters; and Val presented Gray Water Treatment Systems. Originally, we planned for two campus tours but we ended up with an additional tour due to the attendance. For those who couldn’t make the tour, please let me know if you would like to go and we will try to coordinate another tour. I want to recommend to all engineers and energy consultants that they go and visit the LACI campus. There will be more interesting topics coming in future LA chapter meetings. Another amazing event happened in May; it was the annual LA/OC Donald F. Dickerson Golf Tournament. It was held at the same golf course as last year, the “Brookside Golf & Country Club”. On Saturday May 13, 2017, I attended the IAPMO UPPA Chapter in Long Beach. During the Question and Answer session; a question was brought up in reference to NSF 61 Certification by IAPMO. As part of discussion; IAPMO R&T will provide product certification for compliance to NSF/ANSI 61 - www.iapmort.org/google/nsf_info.aspx.

I will follow up with LA Department of Building & Safety (LADBS) and LA Department of Water & Power on their acceptance.

However, an approval for NSF 61 by IAPMO still requires the product to obtain the other IAPMO certifications.

For the same reason as the board meeting, self-introductions were not performed. Past presidents in attendance were Cory Nakanishi, Hal Alvord, Vivian Enriquez, Richard Dickerson, and Kook Dean. In addition to LA Chapter past presidents, the President of Orange County Chapter, Chris MacKnight

Vivian introduced Amir Tabakh who spoke on how this facility started with Amir attending an ASPE meeting which led to a meeting at a coffee shop and ultimately led to the grey water system at the La Kretz Innovation campus. He explained that the next generation of rebates will no longer be toward toilets and will move to other water challenges.

Amir Tabakh introduced Ben Stapleten, Jevon Lam, Mark Gentili, and Val Amezquita as the speakers. He also introduced Fred Walti to speak on LACI. Fred spoke about LACI and the potential of the campus

As this month’s meeting was held at LACI & LADWP, the board meeting was abbreviated. The board meeting was held on May 3rd. Vivian Enriquez, Christopher Yang, Chiara Sulze, and Thura Zin were present. Officers’ reports are due May 30th to ASPE international. Thura will provide more information and deliverable date for him to compile. Mentorship and updates to the website were discussed.

A big shout out and CONGRATULATIONS to our newest graduates of the CPD exam!!!

General: continued from page 5to bring sustainable products to the market and the only incubator to be working with a utility with the opportunity for entrepreneurs to take their products and making them applicable to the customers.

Amir also introduced Erin Gross from LADWP who spoke on how the campus encourages communication and looks for more partnerships to grow the community.

Vivian followed with a few announcements. Next month’s meeting will be back at Monterey Hill restaurant and golf tournament on May 12th. The upcoming picnic will be on September 16th and families are welcomed. Amir Tabakh introduced the first presenter, Ben Stapleten to speak more on LACI. Ben started by speaking on the mission of LACI which is to build a green economy for Los Angeles and make it more sustainable. LACI helps by providing guidance through mentorship program, provided training, and helps to raise capital for the new businesses. He also mentions partnerships between the universities and LACI helps to connect them altogether.

Amir introduced the second presenter, Jevon Lam from LADWP on water conservation strategies. He spoke that Los Angeles gets most of the water supply from Northern California and the Colorado river and over 80% of LA’s water is imported. Over two-third of the water is used by single and multi-family residential. LA has been able to reach 20% savings in water reduction and future saving goals of 22% savings by 2025 and 25% savings by 2035. Other goals are to reduce purchasing water by 50% by 2025 and increasing storm water capture and recycled water by 50% by 2035. He also spoke on rebates to incentivize 1.06 gal or less for toilet flushing, outdoor water reduction, clothes washer rebates, etc. Technical assistance program is available where customers can come in with solutions that help

to save water. The rebate is $1.75 / 1,000 gal saved for the first two years.

Amir introduced the third presenter, Mark Gentili on smart metering. Mark starts by explaining there are primarily two-different type of smart meters. AMR which is automatic meter reading and AMI which is automatic meter interface. LADWP is testing four systems – Hitron which is an AMR, Aclara currently used by SoCal gas company, Metron uses Verizon cellular network, and “Hitron of the future”. Inspectors with Hitron are able to use a handheld reader wirelessly. Aclara is in partnership with SoCal gas and LADWP is looking to test the system by having more communication points on the meters. The readings can be directed to a central location which could be on top of a tall building or telephone pole relayed over the internet and transmits every six hours but has every 5 minutes of data of flow and usage. Metron sends data to the cloud once a day but with every 5 minute readings. The concern is as the network and as technology changes whether the meters will still work.

Amir introduced the last presenter, Val Amezquita on grey water systems. Grey water is any domestic waste except toilets. He mentions there is a limitation in reduction of water use and potential issues with maintenance due to insufficient flow to carry waste material. He mentions that with the grey water system at La Kretz they are able to monitor the water quality. During the construction phase, there were several challenges that were needed to be overcome such as adding slurry instead of soil compaction due to the location of the grey water equipment and coordination with electrical to name a few. He went through some of the parts of the grey water equipment such as UV and filters and that grey water is planned to be used for irrigation. Currently, the grey water is going to sewer until a permit is able to be obtained for the equipment.

join us.

I like to congratulate our current Chapter Board of Directors for continuing on for the next term. I need more people for our chapter subcommittees. If you are interested, please contact me.

Our Region 4 Chapter Presidents Meeting will be held June 3rd in Salt Lake City, Utah. Vivian and I will attend. If there is anything you would like to have discussed at the meeting, email or call me to make it part of the discussion.

We are up to 193 members as of the beginning of May. Our goal is 200 and we would like to surpass 200. We need more new members. If current members have financial problems in being able to keep their membership current, let us know. We’ll work on a way to solve the issue. Please contact our VP membership person, John.

In Region 4 we had eight plumbing engineers pass the CPD exam: Two from our chapter and one from OC. I’m sorry I don’t have the names yet of those who passed but congratulations to you. Please come and see me at our June meeting. I have a gift for you whether you are from OC or the LA chapter.

This year’s 2017 Technical Symposium is in Montreal, QC, Canada, October 19 - 22. If you are planning to attend, please be sure to check with your employer to get the time off. Also, be sure to check your passport expiration date and renew it if necessary. I might also suggest making sure your cell phones work in Canada.

Once again, I’d like to thank all of you who attended the last meeting at LACI and DWP. Please come and join us June 7 for our meeting at the Monterey Hill Restaurant. Please RSVP so we can have a count to give the restaurant.

That’s all for now. See you all soon.
