Onomatopoeia Comic Strip
Onomatopoeia is a word that imitates the sound it represents. A good example of this is in the first paragraph of The Town that Fooled the British.
“Click, clack, clack.”
The sound literally makes the meaning of the word. The author, Lisa Papp, wants you to be able to hear the sound of Henry’s shoes running wildly along the docks. Other examples include but are not limited to: buzz, crash, boom, squeak, clang, and hiss.

Shipbuilding
The town of St. Michaels from the story The Town that Fooled the British was a shipbuilding town during the summer of 1813. Using household materials such as toothpicks, cork, paper, craft sticks, fabric, and clay, try to create a ship that floats. After building the ship and making a prediction, try to float the boat in a large tub of water, or the bathtub. Record what happens. Then, try adding weight to it, taking weight off of it, or using other materials. Record the change you made, and if it helped your boat float.

Materials: Zip sandwich bag Half cup of dirt Window Tape Water Squirt bottle
Procedure: Over newspaper, add ½ cup of dirt to zip sandwich bag. Mist dirt with water from squirt bottle. The soil should not be muddy, but moist. Zip the bag shut, making sure no air can escape. Tape the bag to a sunny window.

Postcard
After reading The Town that Fooled the British, create a postcard that Henry might have sent to a friend or family member after the British overshot St. Michaels.
