Editorial’s Diatribes Hello to everyone… This issue is coming to all of the subscribers to “catch-up” since the last issue was delayed by a month. I am still improving everyday. How-ever, I have not returned back to my old job as of now. I am awaiting my doctor’s release before I can work again. Normally, I would print the class of 2011 portraits in the next (summer) issue, but I am printing these in this issue as they graduate from ISD last week. ISDAA is wishing them good luck in their future. In this issue, you will see what the museum look as of now on the third floor in the Main Building due to the renovations being done in Thomas Officer Hall (Unit I). The article about the alumni news/museum can be found on pages 3-5 with page 5 showing the new arrangements in the museum. When you are on ISD campus for the homecoming or any reasons, you can visit the museum. Two interesting articles are in this issue. First article is article is about a student who was transferred to ISD from Manzanar (Japanese) camp during the onset of World War II. The article can be seen at bottom of page 4. Second article is about an alumni being a coach at Buffalo Grove Park District teaching the fifth graders to play basketball. This article can be seen on page 6. In this issue, there are two articles asking for your help to identify those in the pictures. First picture is a snapshot taken around 1950 with children in it. Unfortunately, there were no names on the back of the snapshot. Second is four individual pictures of four classmates that were in Hay Edwards School during 1967-1976. The committee are planning for a reunion at this place in July. Your detective skills in identifying these people would be very appreci-ated. You can contact the persons indicated in the articles if you know who they are in both pictures. There’s some announcement from the classes of 1961, 1976 and 1986. They are celebrating their 50th, 35th and 25th anniversaries. Their an-nouncements can be found on the back of the issue on page 8th. See you all in Sept . ~ TTT Editor

Museum/Alumni News...

ISDAA Museum Needs Your Help To Restore

The ISDAA Museum have many framed pictures of various classes and organizations that were donated to Museum years ago. The pictures along with the frames were either worn out or faded with some pictures out of their positions from the years of no maintenance. The picture above showed many of them need-ing to be redone or replaced with either chrome or silver frames to look better (make them same). The Mu-seum cannot afford to do all of them! Many of them are in fair to poor con-dition. There are 1958 Girls Class; M.I.S. (Mutual Improvement Society)

1959; Girls Class of 1969 various M.I.S. from 1967 through 1990 or boys sports from 1989 thru 1995. At present we have Julie Flesher taking care of the class of 1972 pic-ture frame and Raymond Gay (‘63) taking care of the 1963 class and Drama Class. If you would like to help getting them restored back to a better condition as a class project, please see Elaine (Lantz ‘58) Cady at the ISDAA Mu-seum in Officer Hall (Unit One) whenever you are in Jacksonville or on the I.S.D. campus. Elaine’s electronic mail address is [email protected]

Spirit of Tiger

This costumed Tiger was a familiar sight on ISD campus during basket-ball games for several years. Kim Zimmerman wore this tiger costume in 1975. Dean Zimmerman wore it in 1976-1977. Their grand-mother made this costume. The en-tire costume along with the mask can be seen in the Museum now at Main Building in Sports Room on third floor.

ISDAA Museum Is Now Located on Third Floor in Main Building All Photos Courtesy of Elaine Cady

ISDAA Museum started the moving in September and went thru Novem-ber when most of the things were in place. We are now re-arranging the furniture and putting everything back to their collection. We were given a total of 10 rooms on third floor that we are using now. Several large and heavy equipment like Linotype ma-chine, slate table, cannot be moved so they remained in Thomas Officer hall (Unit One) until the renovations of putting in new sprinklers are fin-ished in next year or so. We are hop-ing that we can be ready for the ISD Homecoming on Sept. 30 – Oct. 1 weekend for the visitors/alumnus to see the museum. Museum would like to say “Thanks” to these people who have volunteered their free time to help in moving. They were: Di Whitmore ‘71, Jackie Higdon, Marilyn (Lipka ‘57) Johanssen, Linda (Harper, ‘81) Medina, Dave Mattern, Bob Chaplin ‘66, Pedro Medina ‘71, Melvin Long ‘64, Richard Thing ‘67, Michael Hogue ‘81, Barbara Baerwaldt ‘61, Elaine (Lantz ’58) Cady, Janet Pyers, Marene (Clark ’68) Mattern among the others.

Q & A With Dino Lomanto as Head Boys’ Basketball Coach

All Photos on This Page Courtesy of Dino

Dino Lomanto ‘91 as head boys basketball coach for Buffalo Grove Park District. He teaches 5th grade hearing boys. Why did you want to be basketball coach? Why not teach deaf boys instead? Really, I always wanted to be bas-ketball coach someday. Most deaf schools already have a coach. Chuck Burgess from Buffalo Grove Park District Recreation Supervisor said there is 5 available coach posi-tions and 49 boys are on waiting list. I said myself, why not give a try and apply the position? Good enough, I got a job as head coach. My dream came true. Is it easy to get the position as bas-ketball coach? No, they require me to pass the criminal background check first then take a test through National Alliance for Youth Sports website (NAYS). I passed it all. How can you communicate with hearing boys? I have two interpreters, Terrie and Jennifer Oritz who help me to com-municate with them during the prac-tice and games. Why did you have an interpreter? The main reason are time permit and not enough hours of practice before the season starts. The practice is on every Thursday nights and it takes me an hour of practice. I only have three practice days before the league starts. Writing down on dry eraser clipboard and using gestures run out of time. Having an interpreter makes my practice days easier and convenient. How does your assistant coach feel about you being deaf head coach? My assistant coach, Bruce McCrin-dle, and I get along easily. He has a soft heart. He knows nothing about basketball. He learns a lot from me when I teach boys how to play bas-ketball. When the game starts, we

sometimes use gestures or write down on dry eraser clipboard to share our ideas for this game plan. He learns some basic sign language for offense plays. Also, I have a young deaf brother, Jason (‘93) as scorekeeper. I sometimes ask him for the advice. You know two brains are better than one. Do you have a son who plays on your team? If so, how can you han-dle him? Yes, I have a son who is KODA, needs to understand the difference between being dad at home and coach on the court. I have always treated my son the same as every-one else on the team. They have an understanding that when we are on the court, I am the coach, not the dad at that time. What is your mission as head coach? I want to teach the boys that it’s not whether you win or lose, but good sportsmanship is how you play the game. What is your big challenge? Everything goes quickly as the coach has a big advantage of talking to their players right away while I sign to my players, my interpreter has to speak them what I sign, it is like 5-8 seconds delay because playing bas-ketball is the fast paced sport. What is your experience being a coach? I have my faith with my players. First five players play for 5 minutes then substitute with five other players for another 5 minutes to end the quarter while their team did not. Sad!! Like I said before, I don’t care about re-cord. I teach my team as a way of developing team skills and a better understanding of the rules of the game. What is the major issue that you learn through the basketball season? My team know how to play basket-ball by themselves while the other teams, they depend on their coaches, like the coach says, pass to John Doe, shoot the ball, John Doe. They are playing with their ears while my players play with their eyes. Did your players use sign language when they call for offensive plays? It all depends on them but during the practices, I often say to them, it’s up

to you if you want to use sign lan-guage like “Bulls,” “Apple,“ “Y.” Sometimes, they speak, sometimes they sign. Are you going to be basketball coach again next year? Yes, definitely but I am not sure which league I am going to be in, other Buffalo Grove Park District or Buffalo Grove travel basketball team. I have to wait until next year to check the schedule to see if it works for me or not. *I want to say thanks to my former basketball coaches, David Brown (‘80), Randy Shearburn, Mark Nagy and dormparent, Mark Aubry (‘85) and those people who work at ISD for their hard effort to teach me to be a good basketball player. See what I become. At least, I did not forget one person, Mike Moore, who took me to basketball camps for three summers. He teaches me a lot and shares his basketball whiz with me. Also, I want to say, I am blessed to have my parents, Jim Lomanto ‘67 and Charlene (Dangelo ’67) Lomanto for standing on my side since I play basketball for many years. They are my number one fans and still do! Last, but not least, I want to say thanks to my family for their wonderful support. Aricle written by Dino Lomanto

AFSCME: Closure of schools for deaf, Visually impaired would violate contract

Any attempt to close the schools for the deaf and visually impaired in Jacksonville would violate a union agreement, the largest state em-ployee union said Monday. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees said the agreement between the un-ion and Gov. Pat Quinn prevents any facility closures or layoffs until after June 30, 2012, the end of AF-SCME’s current contract. “Our union reached a cost savings agreement with the Quinn admini-stration that is very simple and clear.” said AFSCME spokesman Anders Lindall. “We made conces-sions including deferred pay in-creases and unpaid furlough days and the state agreed there will be no layoffs, no facility closures through the end of (June 2012). Any plan advanced to the contrary would be a direct violation of a collective bar-gaining agreement.”

‘Budget exercise’ The possibility of closing the two schools was raised again during an Illinois House budget hearing last week by the Department of Human Services, which operates the facili-ties. DFS faces steep cuts as law-makers try to craft a more austere spending plan for the budget year that starts July 1. However, DHS said it was re-sponding to questions posed by law-makers about the effect of the cuts. “The General Assembly came to DHS and asked the agency to do a budget exercise related to what would happen if an additional 6.5 percent were to be cut from the gov-ernor’s proposed DHS budget,” said spokesman Stacey Solano. “The department would be forced with making the extremely tough decision of closing these schools, as well as moving approximately 6,400 indi-viduals out of the Home Services program.” But Solano said it was “just a budget exercise. As of today, there are funds in the line items for these schools in the budget.” The House plans to build a budget around a revenue estimate of $33.2 billion, while the Senate is using a figure of $34.3 billion. A number of

human interest groups have said the House plan would force deeper pro-gram cuts than necessary. DHS estimates it would save about $28.4 million by closing the two schools. The schools have 370 em-ployees and more than 400 students.

Not first threat Rep. Jim Watson, R-Jacksonville, said this isn’t the first time the state has talked about closing the schools. “You have to take it seriously and hope that it is not,” Watson said. “It could be designed to extract some-thing out of people, whether a vote from me or concessions from people. There are certainly more productive ways to find resolutions to our chal-lenges.” Jacksonville has seen several large employers leave the city in re-cent years, and closing the schools would be another setback, said Mayor Andy Ezard. He, too, is “getting tired” of the repeated closure threats. “It affects not only the city of Jack-sonville, but outside, too,” Ezard said. “There’s a special place in eve-ryone’s hearts for these schools. More important is the kids who get an education there. They come from all over the state.” One of those is Clark Hamilton, 13, a seventh-grader at the Illinois School for the Deaf. “It is an excellent environment,” said his mother, Darla. “He is pro-foundly deaf. He can’t hear and can’t speak. Everyone there signs. That’s why it’s such a wonderful facility, everyone communicates.” If the school would close, Hamilton said, Clark would have to transfer to a public school and learn with the aid of an interpreter. There’d be no communication with the teachers. It would be absolutely impossible for him,” she said “My gut instinct is they are using our kids as a pawn again,” Hamilton said. “He thinks his school is going to close. He’s a nervous wreck. It’s un-fair if they are using this as a pawn.” Editor’s note: This news article ap-peared in May 3, 2011 issue of State Journal-Register based in Spring-field, IL..
