Frankincense Oil (Boswellia Sacra and Carterri)

• Belongs to the family of Burseraceae which consists of 17 genera and 600 species.

• Approximately 25 known species belong to the genus Boswellia, located mostly in Arabia, northeastern coast of Africa and India.

• There are three species that are considered ‘true Frankincense’ producing trees, Boswellia sacra, Boswellia carterii, and Boswellia frereana.

• Interesting, a fourth species, Boswellia serrata, has gotten much attention and may be considered a fourth, with boswellic acids considered the main active constituent.

• Controversy on distillation and boswellic acids

• These oils are high in monoterpenes, terpenes, and specifically alpha-pinene.

• Alpha-pinene has also been demonstrated to have activity on inflammation through an effect on NF-KB, a potent transcription factor in the regulation of pro-inflammatory

• Alpha and beta-pinene are responsible for the stress relieving effect of “forest bathing”, the phytoncides that have been shown to cause an increase in natural killer cells

• Also contains limonene, a potent constituent with many health benefits.
