Matthew 22:35-40, “A lawyer, asked Jesus {a question,} testing Him, "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" And Jesus said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

The 2nd “Table” of the Ten Commandments

teaches us how to love one another.

Loving our neighbor means NOT:

Injuring them (murder)

Betraying them (committing adultery)

Taking what is theirs (stealing)

Lying to them (False Witness)

(Coveting) what is rightfully theirs.

This Commandment also warns against all anger and hatred:

As Jesus said in his sermon on the Mount, “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ’You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment.” (Matthew 5:21-22).

This Commandment also warns against all anger and hatred:

As the Apostle John wrote- “Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.” (1 John 3:15).

This Commandment also warns us against lust. Again Jesus redefined the command-ment in his Sermon on the Mount with these words—

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ’You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (Matthew 5:27-28).

When challenged concerning the Mosaic Law and marriage-

“Jesus said to them, "Have you not read that

He who made them at the beginning ’made

them male and female,’ and said, ’For this

reason a man shall leave his father and

mother and be joined to his wife, and the

two shall become one flesh’? So then, they

are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore

what God has joined together, let not man

separate.” (Matthew 19:4-6).

This Commandment tells us to trust in God for our provisions:

In Matt 6:25-26, 33 Jesus said-

Do not be anxious for your life, {as to} what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; nor for your body, {as to} what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns, and {yet} your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?”

“Why do people steal? The real reason people steal is because they’ve forgotten about God. The reason people deceive, manipulate, and cut ethical corners is because they believe their future security lies in their own hands.”

“Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.” (Eph. 4:28).

“It is possible to give freely and become more wealthy, but those who are stingy will lose everything. The generous prosper and are satisfied; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.” (Prov. 11:24-25, NLT).

This Commandment teaches us to be truthful:

Eph. 4:25,29 says - “Therefore, putting away all lying, "Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor," for we are members of one another… Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let every word you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them,” (NLT).

James 3:2 - If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a mature man, able to bridle the whole body as well.

5-6 – The tongue is a small part of the body,

and {yet} it boasts of great things. Behold, how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! (he said) The tongue is a fire, the {very} world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of {our} life, and is set on fire by hell.

8 - No one can tame the tongue; {it is} a

restless evil {and} full of deadly poison.

9 But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction.

10 For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith, and pierced themselves with many a pang.

We live in a consumer oriented society, and today’s sophisticated marketers spend billions of dollars and work around the clock for one purpose: to make you unhappy and dissatisfied with what you have. These folks work day and night to provoke us and to persuade us that if we would just buy this or that possession that, we’d find a greater measure of happiness and security in this old world.”

We keep God’s commands, not out of fear and doubt, but out of love and respect.

We honor our neighbors in the same way.

We do so, not for our gain, but for HIS.

He is the True God of the universe, and we must have “No other God’s before Him!”
