President’s Message
Fellow Members,
2015 is an auspicious year for The Tanglin Club as The Club will be celebrating its 150th anniversary. Formed in October 1865 by 40 good men who were seeking a place for rest and recreation, The Tanglin Club was founded right where the present Club is located. Today, The Club boasts of some 7,400 Members comprising Ordinary, Associate, Life, Honorary and Term Members. The Club’s twin buildings (the main Clubhouse and the Sports and Recreation Complex) house a myriad of facilities ranging from food and beverage, to sports and recreation, library, reading room, and administration. Best of all, The Club has upheld many of the fine traditions which have made The Tanglin Club truly unique in more ways than one.
To help The Club celebrate its 150th birthday, a 150th Anniversary Committee, chaired by Past President Richard Eu, has been appointed to come up with a year-long programme for this important celebration. Members can look forward to a fun-filled year.
Going forward, The Club has to tackle some critical issues. Foremost on my mind is the membership issue. It is a difficult and complex issue but it is one we must address rather quickly, but with caution and sensitivity.
The Club’s current planned total membership (PTM) of 4,000 has almost reached its limit. In fact, the Singaporean category has already reached its limit of 2,040, or 51 percent of 4,000. The resolution to seek an increase in the PTM in an earlier Special General Meeting failed to receive Members’ approval. The Club continues to grapple with two concerns: Firstly, there is the long waiting list for Ordinary Membership, especially in the Singaporean category. Whilst some may deem this as a ‘happy’ problem, I think it is an issue that we have to address, and the sooner we tackle it, the better for The Club. Secondly The Club is confronted with an ageing membership and the parallel problem of Members making minimal use of The Club or not at all.
Looking from another perspective, one could conclude that our Club is in need of rejuvenation. How do we do it? We need Members’ suggestions and inputs and a consensus-building approach such that whatever proposals are being put forward will receive unanimous support and result in a win-win situation all round. One probable proposal would be to make available for Singaporean Members, say in their seventies and older, to transfer their Membership to one Member of his or her household. This proposal, if adopted, would go a long way to solve the long membership waiting list issue and provide the start of the rejuvenation process. In a
similar vein, there could be other creative proposals or ideas, and this is where I welcome your suggestions. The other major issue confronting The Club is the utilisation of space at The Club’s premises. Is the current space at The Club being efficiently utilised? In my opinion several sections of the space of The Club’s premises are sub-optimally utilised. I shall briefly explain. For a start, there is a great imbalance between the usage of some of The Club’s outlets versus the other similar outlets. The space utilisation of the Tavern or the Wheelhouse
is significantly higher than that at Tangles, hence the approved resolution by the Membership to renovate Tangles for a Chinese restaurant. Another substantive area that is possibly not efficiently utilised is the entire second floor of the main Clubhouse, which currently houses the
administration office, the function rooms, the library and the reading room. These are some of the questions that I have asked our Development and Planning Sub-Committee, and Management to address.
Whilst there are no absolute solutions to any issues whether on membership or development and planning, let us be guided by the wonderful gift of wisdom in all our deliberations and decisions.
Thank you.

Fellow Members,
On the cover of this month’s issue, we feature Oktoberfest promotions in The Club, in conjunction with the 16-day festival which starts late September in Munich, Germany. More detailsare in the F&B section of this issue. In the month of July, we had the World Cup quarter, semi and final matches screened ‘live’ in The Club’s Wet Bar. In spite of the unfavorable early morning screening times of 3am, the atmosphere at the Wet Bar was loud and lively, as Members and guests fully packed out the place. Enthusiastic fans on both sides cheered on loudly for their teams, but alas, there could only be one winner in the end. Sorry Argentinian fans.
For the month of September, the event of the month would be the Singapore Grand Prix, where the Formula One establishment will bring the motor racing competition into Singapore over the weekend of 19th September. Dubbed the “new jewel in the Formula One sports crown” by Bernie Ecclestone, the President of the multi-billion dollar F1 motor race establishment, the weekend event promises a beautiful and glittering night spectacle of motor racing and vibrant entertainment performances right in the central business hub of the Little Red Dot. If you’re not planning to view the F1 races ‘live’ from the racetracks, you can join in the fun at The Club’s Wet Bar, which will be screening the event, and attended by F1 enthusiasts.
We did something interesting with our weekly electronic “newsbites“ recently. “Crazy 8’s” took place on 8 August, 8pm where we gave away 8 tickets to Cavalia worth over $2000 to the first 8 Members who spent at least $88 or $188 in our various F&B outlets on that day itself. Response was heartening with several Members already queuing up before 8pm. But alas, the rules were the rules. Eight lucky spenders walked away well fed and well satisfied. Similar giveaways may happen in the future, so if you haven’t subscribed to newsbites, don’t wait any longer. Drop an email to Habib, our Senior Marketing & Communications Executive, via the following email address: [email protected].
On the topic of e-news, we are currently looking
to revamp The Club’s website, and are looking for Members with professional creative backgrounds (media, arts, fashion, interior design, etc.) to participate in a design ‘visioneering’ workshop to help guide and determine the look and feel, and content of The Club’s website. The workshop should just take one week night from your busy schedule to participate.
Please drop an email to Habib, our Senior Marketing & Communications Executive, via the following email address: [email protected] should you be interested to attend the
workshop or to register for the weekly newsbites.
In closing, I will leave you with the following quote:

Dear Members,
Thank you for the incredible support throughout August. Our national Day themed promotions saw sell-outs and full-houses. This month, we shift from all things Singaporean to German favourites, in celebration of Oktoberfest held from 20 September until 5 October in Munich, around the world, and right here at The Club. Chef Louis and his Team have created an Oktoberfest lunch and dinner buffet at The Tavern, complete with pork knuckle, sauerkraut, sausage, apple strudel, pretzels and the works. We’ve also arranged to have Erdinger beer flowing on tap during this promotion and have especially priced our pints at $9.20.
On 20 September, The Churchill Room will be transformed into a ‘beer hall’ and The Swiss Alpine Lions will be on hand to entertain you with Oktoberfest classics. At $88 for Members, $98 for Guests, and an early-bird discount of $78, you won’t want to miss this fun evening inclusive of free-flowing Erdinger and a sumptuous German buffet. Sport your Lederhosen and Bavarian costumes – there’s a best-dressed contest too! Prost!
Even The Tea Room has jumped in on the Oktoberfest band wagon with its delicious Black Forest Cake promotion, by the slice ($4.50) or the entire cake ($32). It’s perfect to take home or to bring along as a hostess gift. While on the subject of The Tea Room, you may have heard it on the grape vine that we stock about 40 labels of wine at below-retail prices. For example, Reserve Mouton Cadet St. Emilion 2011, is $48.78; about $10 less than retail. So why not stock up your ‘cellar’ with great buys from The Club?
If Oktoberfest isn’t quite your style, you may wish to join us in The Churchill Room for Sunday Lunch! Our August, Taste of Singapore Buffet was such a great success that we have decided to feature Peranakan favourites in September. Sundays (7, 14, and 21), The Churchill Room will dish up a sumptuous assortment for $28 (adults) and $14 (children). We sold-out each Sunday in August, so please be sure to make an early reservation if you wish to enjoy this promotion. The dress code for Sunday lunch is casual and the whole family is welcome.
From the Entertainment Committee, ‘Viva La Mexico’ takes centre-stage on Friday, 12 September, at The Churchill Room. Chef Alvin and his Team have prepared a delicious four-course Mexican meal, accompanied by ‘live’ mariachi music from Los Cucurrus. It’s $85 for Members and $95 for Guests.
Wine aficionados, mark your calendar for 19 September, when the Wine Circle features a horizontal tasting of 2000 Bordeaux! Come month-end, Churchill’s Champagne Brunch returns on the 28th. Tavern regulars take note; we’re introducing a 20% early-bird discount off food dishes in the menu, if you order between 6pm and 7pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, for the month of September. And lastly, based on much feedback, we
are pleased to announce that Tangles is bringing back the very popular express lunch buffet at $12.88, with your choice of coffee or tea, September-long.
If you have little ones, join us poolside on 8 September, at 7.30pm, for a lantern parade, in celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
On the Sports and Recreation side of The Club, the various Sections are doing a fabulous job, so we have heaps on the go. The Dance Section features its
‘Dazzling Dance night’ on 6 September, and Tennis hosts its Veterans Championship from 5 to 7 September. The 37th Annual POT Games with our good old neighbour, Singapore Cricket Club, will take place in September with Lawn Bowls starting the competition on 7 September. As the host club, we have included Bridge as the 9th activity
which will contribute to the overall results. Let us hope this strategy pays off and we can welcome the POT back to the club.
If none of these are your speed, we’re also featuring a morning spin challenge on the 27th in the Gym. Pun intended. And to those of you participating in our Annual Golf Championship on 11 September at Sentosa Golf Club, keep it straight and don’t get stuck on the 19th. We’ll see you back at The Churchill Room to celebrate your success on the greens!
In closing, on behalf of the Team, I’d like to reinforce that we are here to serve you. Do let us know how we can make your experience at The Club even better. We’re listening!

The two Collective Agreements between the Attractions, Resorts and Entertainment union (AREu) and the Singapore Catering Services Staff union were signed during a signing ceremony held on 4 August 2014.
According to Mr C P Wong, Secretary of Industrial Relations of the Catering union, he started representing blue-collar workers comprising of cleaners, food and beverage service and kitchen staff of the Club since 1968. Currently his union has a bigger membership size as compared to the AREu, which represents the clerical staff.
With the renewal of The Club’s Collective Agreements, various improvements were made as The Club believes that a competitive compensation and benefits package are vital to retain and attract staff.

Musings on Singing“I love music, but I can’t sing to save my life.” “Goodness me, that person is soooo flat!” “Oh of course I know how to sing. Anyone with a voice can sing! Let me show you!” *protagonist proceeds to sing off-key*
When it comes to singing, everyone seems to have an opinion (about oneself, sometimes of others), especially when everybody has a voice (pardon the pun). Perhaps this is one of the reasons behind the success of singing competition “American Idol”?
After all, what are the sounds that we are most sensitive to? Do we not naturally react with immediacy to the sound of our
names being intoned by our colleagues, friends and loved ones? Is not the human voice one of the most beautiful instruments we have in our possession?
Many take the voice for granted and few stop to think about the difficulties and stresses faced by singers... When the voice is one’s instrument of choice, managing one’s body, diet and lifestyle often becomes a necessity in order to maintain a certain level of professional consistency. The fact remains that singers are essentially vocal athletes, whose task is to master the most temperamental instrument of instruments as one’s body can be in a very different physical state from day to day. Imagine attempting to play a keyboard instrument where the size of the keys or distance between the keys are differentevery morning!
Here at the Tanglin Club Choir, we spent a devote a good amount of time working on vocal technique so that the voice is able to serve the needs of the music effectively.
On Choral SingingChoral singing is tough business.
not only must one have individual vocal technique akin to a soloist in order to gain access to the full spectrum of vocal colour, the ability to hold one’s vocal line whilst listening to at least 1 other voice part is vital to the group’s success.
As a music team, the willingness to have the interests of the group as the priority before self is vital to a choir’s success.
Like mass martial arts where even top pugilists are willing to put aside their egos to work as a team, choir is all about working together to enjoy communal success!
If you are a team-player who is willing to commit your time, we welcome you to join the Tanglin Club Choir!

Sports & Recreation | Balut
July was Empire Cup month where the British Club (BC) and The Tanglin Club (TC) donned the honours of retaining or taking the cup away to a new home. Mark Simpson set the tone for an irreverent afternoon as the MC when he stated that he was apologising in advance for precisely nothing, and the BC Convenor followed on with that The TC players should take all the pictures with the Cup early as it would be going back to the British Club!
After a repast of some very decent vittles, the games got underway with plenty of good natured sledging, and the final score was BC 6914 points and TC 6742 points. The BC got both the highest game and total points with Keith’s monster 162 score, and Rick Clement’s runaway 738 total score.
Keith, apart from the highest game score, also tied with Bansi for the lowest game score of 48 points. One cold flop later and Bansi walked away with that prize. Revenge will now have to wait for another year; our thanks to F&B for their superb effort in keeping food and drinks flowing and to S&R for putting together this latest episode. In a slightly subdued July Balut session, 12 players fronted up for the monthly game at our usual place to bemuse those at the Wheelhouse and the pool side. The quiet dozen duly served notice that they could make the front row of any Rugby 7s tournament and ready to take on all comers in the decibel department. You have been warned! The game had a 121, 123, two 125s, a 140, and Bansi put paid to all hopes of nabbing the highest game score with a 148. Her total game score of 617 was pipped at the post by Scribe’s 622 total. This was unusual in that the guys actually won something. What was not unusual was that you-know-who did make a Balut!
Looking that bit down the road, the Section will be doing:
Upcoming events:
• 4th Round Inter-Club Balut on Wednesday, 17 September at Indian Association.
• Monthly game on Friday, 26 September.
• POT games vs Singapore Cricket Club on Saturday, 27 September hosted by TC.
• Final Round of Inter-club Balut on Wednesday, 22 October hosted by SCC.
• Monthly game on Friday, 31 October.
• Annual dinner and The Club Balut Championship on Friday, 28 november.
You know that we are a friendly Section, so, do drop by if you are a newbie and have a go.

Annual Darts Championship 2014Saturday, 26 July was an action-packed day in the Darts Section calendar. Events commenced with lunch, during which all members had a chance to catch up with each other whilst enjoying a sumptuous buffet. This was followed by Day One of the Annual Darts Championship for 2014, with the men’s and ladies’ singles.
As expected, the men’s championship was extremely competitive and concentration was at an optimum. After some thrilling, closely fought battles, the final was played out between MC Cheong and Denis Hardy. A best of three matches witnessed Denis emerging 2-0 as the men’s singles victor for 2014.
This year, the ladies’ tournament adopted a different format and was played on a league basis. Eventually, after some challenging matches, nicky Hardy emerged as the ladies’ singles victor for 2014, with Lilian Lee, Mavis Light and nancy Ee sharing the honours for runners-up.
Special mention should be given to Frederick Francis and Mavis Light for achieving the highest scores for a throw in their respective tournaments.
Many thanks to all the supporters, who stayed throughout the afternoon to cheer on and encourage the competitors. Our gratitude is also extended to the F&B staff for the excellent food and service, and to the S&R staff for their untiring hard work.
Well done to all the members who took part in the competitions, and congratulations to Men’s Champion Denis Hardy and Ladies’ Champion nicky Hardy.

Q: True of False - Old Tom Morris and Young Tom Morris are the reigning oldest and youngest Open winners.A: True: Old Tom Morris (46 in 1867) and Young Tom Morris (aged 17 in 1868).
Q: Name the golfer ranked 396 in the world who won the 2003 Open?A: Ben Curtis.
Q: Who was the winner of a record six championships?A: Harry Vardon (he must have had a good grip).
A stanza written in the late 1800s by an anonymous poet who credited the origin of golf to two bored Scottish shepherds:
He hit a pebble with his crookAnd sent the stone across the brook; The other, tempted then to strike,With equal ardour “played the like,”And thus they went with heart and soulTowards a distant quarry hole.
Paul HealyGolf Section Committee Member
July In-House Golf GameAdmiral Henry Keppel lay the foundation for Keppel in the 1830’s by clearing away the pirates from the area, and was recognised for his accomplishment by having a golf club named after him in 1904.
The heavily wooded and undulating terrain of Keppel Golf Course conceals more of Singapore’s historical roots. For example, the British army occupied the club during the war and built an air raid shelter near the 14th tee box. Then, when Singapore fell under Japanese rule in 1942, Keppel Golf Club also fell into the hands of the Japanese. In the three and a half years of Syonan-to, the Japanese built their headquarters on the first fairway.
On 25th July 2014, nineteen buccaneering golfers from The Tanglin Club ventured to Keppel Golf Club on the rapidly evolving Singapore Southern Waterfront possibly unknowing of what treasure, and danger, lay in store.
The format chosen for the event was two-ball scramble. This format involves pairs of golfers assuming the position of the preferred tee shot and after each subsequent shot the best of the two shots is selected and both players play from that spot until the ball is holed. The team score is recorded. This novel format was chosen to encourage strategy and remove the imminent pain of suffering from wayward shots on the tight Keppel fairways.
Outright winners, gross and nett, for the day were Hugh Hoyes-Cock and Paul Healy. The format certainly favoured this pair of mid-teen handicap golfers as they dovetailed to a gross score 76 (with a combined handicap of 13). Congratulations also go to nearest-the-pinners, Steven Ong and James De Foe. Prizes awarded were golf balls plus discount vouchers for the already well-subsidised August golf event at Safra, Changi.
To bolster the after-golf dinner and camaraderie, attendees were divided into two teams for a quick fire quiz on the history of the British Open Championship.

World Masters Squash 2014Another quiet summer month, but not for the Squash Section! The Tanglin Club and Singapore were well-represented at the 2014 World Masters Squash tournament with some first-timers to the World Masters.
The Hong Kong Football Club kindly hosted nearly 800 enthusiastic squash players and their entourage, and the opening cocktails were very well-attended. The competition was dominated by the seeded players progressing through the tournament and generally accomplishing their wins in straight sets.
Over the course of the tournament from 4 July to 11 July, you would have seen familiar faces like our very own Peter Rogers and other slightly less famous names like Peter Hill, Zainal Abidin and some say they spotted Daryl Arnold in the crowd too! (Though we are not sure if Daryl was old enough to play.)
Well done, guys!

The showdown between Roger Federer and novak Djokovic drew a crowd of 40 Members to Tangles on the evening of Sunday,6th July.
A sumptuous dinner, complete with strawberries and cream accompanied by beer and wine, was laid out before the ‘live‘ screening of the Grand Final.
Members watched anxiously as the two stars fought ferociously for the much coveted Slam of the year. By the cheers and sighs of the spectators, one could easily tell which side of the net they were on. What a dramatic final of five sets with Djokovic eventually emerging the Winner to claim his 2nd Wimbledon title.
On Monday 28 July, about 50 players turned up for the above event. After the games and workout, it was downtime for all to relax over a beer or wine with food as usual to celebrate this festive occasion.
What a delightful way to end the day.

ADVENTURES AlONG THE ‘ROAD TO REVOlUTION:DR. SUN YAT SEN AND HIS cOMRADES IN IPOH’by chan Sue MengA Tanglin Club member since emigrating en famille from Malaysia in 1979, Sue Meng is a seasoned public relations, communications and corporate social responsibility practitioner. Her experience spans across the airline, hospitality, art and heritage, and financial services industries. She currently manages the Amicorp Community Foundation with a portfolio of global social projects focused on helping less-privileged people to become empowered, develop self-esteem and dignity. Sue Meng is an alumna of the university of Leeds where she graduated with an MA in Asia Pacific Studies. She has lived, worked and studied in Malaysia, Singapore, uK and China.
In 2011, she took a sabbatical to embark on her long-desired journey to learn more about her great great grandfather, Lee Guan Swee who was a loyal friend and a staunch supporter of Dr. Sun Yat Sen the revolutionary who brought an end to the dynastic era in China.
Join us on 3 October, 6.30pm at the Claymore Room and Draycott Room when Sue Meng will share adventures during her journey down historical lane that culminated with the publishing of her work. The trail pins some 25 people and places that had supported Dr. Sun in Ipoh, capital of the once-wealthy tin mining state of Perak. Sue Meng, writes Professor Wang Gungwu in his foreword, “… has not been content to pursue her family’s story but has pushed forward to find new dots to connect”. The detachable trail map at the back of the book lets the reader embark on a tour of many of the historical sites that are still around today even if they no longer serve their earlier ‘revolutionary’ missions.
‘Road to Revolution: Dr. Sun Yat Sen and his Comrades in Ipoh’ is part of the ‘Dr Sun Yat Sen in nanyang Series’. It was funded, and published on 13 December 2013, by the Sun Yat Sen nanyang Memorial Hall (SYSnMH), part of national Heritage Board, Singapore.

HARD cHOIcESby Hilary Rodham clintonHillary Rodham Clinton’s inside account of the crises, choices, and challenges she faced during her four years as America’s 67th Secretary of State, and how those experiences drive her view of the future.
“All of us face hard choices in our lives,” Hillary Rodham Clinton writes at the start of this personal chronicle of years at the center of world events. “Life is about making such choices. Our choices and how we handle them shape the people we become.”
In the aftermath of her 2008 presidential run, she expected to return to representing new York in the united States Senate. To her surprise, her former rival for the Democratic Party nomination, newly elected President Barack Obama, asked her to serve in his administration as Secretary of State. This memoir is the story of the four extraordinary and historic years that followed, and the hard choices that she and her colleagues confronted.
