Valentine’sDay Dinner 12

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEMy Fellow Members

In October last year I attended the inaugural Inter-Social Club Golf Tournament dinner at the Singapore Swimming Club. The clubs which participated in the Golf Tournament are all non-golfi ng social clubs, and they are the Changi Beach Club, the Chinese Swimming Club, the Serangoon Gardens Country Club, the Singapore Cricket Club, the Singapore Recreation Club, the Sin-gapore Swimming Club and The Tanglin Club. Each club fi elded 16 players for the Tournament and the Serangoon Gardens Country Club emerged overall winners.

The food and the entertainment that evening were excellent. Singa-pore Swimming Club was the per-fect host. The feedback I received from our Members was that they enjoyed themselves thoroughly and appreciated the opportunity to meet fellow golfers (from 6 other clubs). According to them, the Club could look into organising games with other clubs for our Members.

Members are aware that we have an annual series of games with the Singapore Cricket Club called the “Pot Games”. The Pot Games be-gan in 1978, and the 2 clubs take turns to host the Games and din-ner. We shall host the Games this year. The games played are Squash, Tennis, Lawn Bowls, Balut, Cricket, Billiards, Golf and Darts. I am reli-ably informed that as some of our Members are also members of the Singapore Cricket Club, there are issues of “divided” loyalties during

the Games. I am also told that as we are a recreation and social club, and not a “sporting” club like the Singa-pore Cricket Club, our record in the Games is patchy. My friends also tell me that when we introduced Lawn Bowls to the Games, it was with a view to improving our chances. Whatever the outcomes, our Mem-bers look eagerly to the Games and it is a highlight of the Club calendar.

Following from the Golf Tourna-ment dinner, I spoke to some GC members and invited the American Club, the National University of Singapore Society and the Singapore Swimming Club to join us in discus-sions on an annual series of friendly games based on the Pot Games for-mat. The choice of the 3 clubs was deliberate; their members represent a cross-section of Singapore society.

I am pleased to inform Members that The Tanglin Club, the Ameri-can Club, the National University of Singapore Society and the Singa-pore Swimming Club have agreed to participate in an annual series of friendly games to be called “TANS Games”. “TANS” was formed from the initial letters of the names of the 4 clubs. We shall host the inaugural TANS Games and dinner. The other 3 clubs will take turns to host the subsequent Games and dinner, and we shall host the Games in 2016 and so on. The games played in the in-augural TANS Games will be Tenpin Bowling on 29/3/12 at the Singapore Swimming Club, Golf on 30/3/12 at the Warren Golf and Country Club and Tennis, Squash and Billiards on 31/3/12 at our Club, to be followed

by dinner at the Churchill Room.

The Club will be donating a chal-lenge trophy, to be called the “Cald-well Trophy” for the TANS Games. The late Mr Hunter Caldwell was a Member of the Club. The Club is a benefi ciary of a substantial bequest of the late Mr Caldwell’s Will. Part of the bequest was used to purchase the Honours Board in the Club. I knew the late Mr Caldwell and we both served in the Membership and Rules Sub-Committee. I remem-bered him as a fair and generous person who always had the interests of the Club at heart. He was also a conscientious person who took Committee work seriously and who took great pains to draft and re-draft Committee documents because he believed that if a thing was worth doing, it was worth doing well. GENERAL COMMITTEE 2011/12

2

Dear Members

The traditional welcome of 2012 was celebrated with a big bang into the early hours of 1 January. This was followed by the welcoming of the Dragon Year on 23 January, the fi rst day of the Chinese New Year with lion & dragon dances at the Main Lobby and S&R Complex Lobby.

Special thanks to the Members of Entertainment and F&B Sub-Committees, and all Staff who have worked so hard to put the events together for the fun and enjoyment for all Members!

14 February is the day for romance; bring your beloved to the Club’s Valentine’s Day Dinner to spend the night away (details can be found on page 12).

Upgrading & Renovation of the ClubAs you will have noticed, both the Main Clubhouse and S&R Complex car park barriers and management systems are up. With this system, the management is now able to ob-tain detailed information such as the date & time of entry & exit of any vehicle from the car park man-agement systems. The systems also allows the Management (particular-

ly the security guards at the respec-tive main entrances) to be aware of the availability of car park lots at any point of time from the display of available car park lots at the secu-rity counters.

Members of the Development & Property Sub-Committee, together with the Management, have select-ed the materials for Phase II of the Main Club façade upgrading works, which will commence in the middle of February 2012.

Staff MattersI am pleased to inform you that, out of the 235 full time staff employed by the Club, 69 of them did not take any medical leave for the year 2011.

An annual staff bowling tourna-ment was held on 9 Jan 2012. Ban-quet department’s Jeffery Paton and Pastry chef Jackie Lee emerged the Best Male and Female staff bowl-ers. The Team Champion category was won by the team consisting of Ramani, Jeffrey, Shaeril, Alif and Lincoln.

And in celebration for a year’s hard work, the Club will be closed early on 20 February 2012 at 3pm to al-low staff time to dress up and party at the Staff D&D.

Last, but not least, I am pleased to inform that the total collection from Members towards Children’s Aid Society amounted to $2,097.45.

Thank you once again for your continuous support and encourage-ment.

Best regards

17TH EXCELLENT SERVICE (HOSPITALITY SECTOR) AWARD

The Excellent Service Award or EXSA was launched in 1994. It is a national award managed by SPRING Singapore together with industry lead associations

that recognises individuals who have delivered exem-plary service. It seeks to develop service role models for staff to emulate, create service champions, professional-ise services and raise the prestige of a career in service.

The Tanglin Club is proud to announce that the fol-lowing staffs have attained Silver award in the 17th Ex-cellent Service (Hospitality Sector).

• Kwok Ngow (Housekeeping Attendant)• Razali Bin Haron (Restaurant Manager)• Tan Kian Peng Eddie (Assistant Restaurant Manager)• Letchumi A/P Koolu (Catering Sales Manager)• Adnan Abdullah (Senior Restaurant Manager)• Wong Soon Hin Alvin (Sous Chef)

To qualify for the award, all nominees must meet the award criteria, namely, customer compliments, service recognition and contribution to service improvement.

This recognition has certainly motivated our staff to work harder towards achieving service excellence at work. We look forward to having more staff being con-ferred with this recognition in the future.

DVD ReviewOne Day starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess

Based on the David Nicolls best-seller, the story tells the tale of Emma Morley (Hathaway) and Dexter Mayhew (Sturgess), who meet after their graduation on July 15, 1988. Although they spend the night together, they agree to be simply friends. For the next two decades, key moments of their relationship

are experienced over several July 15ths in their lives. Together and apart, we see Dexter and Emma through their friendship and fights, hopes and missed opportunities, laughter and tears. Somewhere along their journey, these two people realize that what they are searching and hoping for has been there for them all along. As the true meaning of that one day back in 1988 is revealed, they come to terms with the nature of love and life itself.

Book ReviewThe Drop by Michael ConnellyHarry Bosch has been given three years before he must retire from the LAPD, and he wants cases more fiercely than ever. In one morning, he gets two. DNA from a 1989 rape and murder matches a 29-year-old convicted rapist. Was he an eight-year-old killer or has something gone terribly wrong in the new Regional Crime Lab? The latter possibility could compromise all of the lab’s DNA cases currently in court. Then Bosch and his partner are called to

a death scene fraught with internal politics. Councilman Irvin Irving’s son jumped or was pushed from a window at the Chateau Marmont. Irving, Bosch’s longtime nemesis, has demanded that Harry handle the investigation. Relentlessly pursuing both cases, Bosch makes two chilling discoveries: a killer operating unknown in the city for as many as three decades, and a political conspiracy that goes back into the dark history of the police department.

Balut is a game played with fi ve dices by two or more players, the optimum be-ing fi ve. Each player in turn shakes the

dice, numbered 1 to 6, using a leather box, and throws them onto a pad or fl at surface.

Each player shall have up to three throws in each round, and may put out any number of dice after either the fi rst throws, or put them back in the box before the next throw, the ob-jective is to secure the best possible combina-tion of the dice for scoring the most points.

Each player should start out attempting the high scores of Balut (5 of a kind), Low & High Straight (a run) or Full House (2 of one number, 3 of another). If he fails in this, he can then en-ter his score either under Fours, Fives or Sixes, depending on the extent of the failure, but he must have had one of that number amongst the dice.

Any score over say 22, is not a bad “Choice”, but beginners are advised to keep “Choice” open for as long as possible. It does help in the long run! Any failure to achieve Balut or a Straight when every other section is completed results in “Scrubbing” one or the other. Some prefer to scrub straight, others Balut.

That is really a personal preference. Balut always scores 30, regardless of which dice. Straights are the sum of the dice – 15 or 20.THE AIM: is to score as many points as pos-

sible by the end of the game – the maximum under these rules being 183.

Year 2011 has been a meaningful and special one for Rohini Arya . Claiming the Cup for Champion player for year 2011 makes this her 10th consecutive un-challenged

win from back in 2001.Rohini is by no means a stranger in bridge circles and to our

section-fund members, and yet paradoxically, very little is known about her.

The majority of us only know her, in her capacity as a Bridge Committee member for about 10years and Bridge Convener, re-sponsible for all bridge related matters at our club for the past four years. Achieving 10 straight wins is no small feat.

It takes discipline, dedication and sacrifi cing one’s personal time for some other activities to just focus on bridge.

So it is my pleasure to share with you some of the things I found out about Rohini when I interviewed her for this write-up.

Her initial interest in bridge was sparked 25 years ago by just watching her husband Jai and his friends play bridge on week-ends at their home in Mumbai.

Jai was not only an avid player; he was also a very good one.The more she watched the more fascinated she became with

the game until one day, she suddenly decided that there is only so much time you can spend watching and not participating so

if “You can’t beat them join them”.She got together a group, found a teacher, organised lessons and, from there on there was no looking back.

Rohini pursued her interest for the game after the family moved to Korea and Taiwan with positive results, and it

was there that she discovered how passionate she was about her bridge and how much she had grown to love the game. When the family moved to Singapore, they became

members of The Tanglin Club in 1996 and it was here where she started playing serious duplicate bridge, mak-ing winning the Annual Championship Cup her goal.

Congratulations, Rohini! May you continue to have many more wins in the future!

CORE TRAINING STABILITY VS STRENGTH

When someone says they want to do core train-ing these days, it could mean a number of things, ranging from training to get six-packs,

to training for core stability or core strength for injury prevention purposes.

In this article we are going to look at core training from the standpoint of stability and strength; very often these two terms are used interchangeably when speak-ing about training the trunk musculature.

The truth is the two are not quite the same. We can defi ne core stability as the ability to lock the core/tor-so/pelvis in a specifi c, preferably neutral position and maintain that alignment in the presence of movement/motion imposed by the extremities.

For example, in the push-up position can you lift up one arm while maintaining the position of the trunk?

Training for core stability requires resisting motion at the lumbar spine through activation of the abdominal musculature as a whole. Training for core strength al-lows for motion to occur through the lumbar spine in an attempt to work the abdominal musculature, often in an isolated fashion; examples includes exercises like trunk rotation, sit-ups and side bends. You’re thinking “what’s with the fuss over these terms?” The truth is, it matters a lot if you want to be pain-free.

Most cases of slipped disc occurs at lumbar spine L4 and L5. The main reason for this is that the lumbar spine is an area where we tend to move too much and

get unstable. If you were to pick up something up from the fl oor how would you do it?

Noted spinal biomechanist Stuart McGill often cites that one of the surest ways to herniate a disc in your lower back is to repetitively fl ex and extend the lumbar spine.

Because our lower back bends forward, the load we are carrying is completely supported by the structure of the back (the discs and the vertebrae), not by the muscles. Muscles get stronger from repetitions, but discs do not; they get strained.

The question then would be “Why do continue to move an area that is already moving too much?”

We need to strengthen the core, but not by moving or fl exing it.

Performance enhancement specialist Mike Robertson states that the role of the core is not about creating movement but to re-distribute and re-direct force.

“When the inner and outer cores are effectively doing their jobs, they can help improve pelvic and spinal alignment. This takes stress off of a specifi c spinal segment or tissue, and allows the entire spine to “fl ow” in a much more optimal fashion, re-distributing the forces over all the spinal segments versus just one. The role of the core is to re-direct or transmit/transfer the force that the hips and thighs generated up to the upper extremity and the bat/ball.”

With the above principles in mind, let’s look at how to apply them. (continued on facing page)

the force generated from the hips and legs to the kettle-bell without any energy leakage.

There are many ways to implement these training principles; the above are just two of them. Like every-thing else, how you execute the movement is important. If you are not sure, feel free to approach the trainers to give you a few pointers.

A pioneer in private banking, Coutts serves clients from over 40 offi ces across the world offering tailored wealth management, banking and trust services.

Rain, rain, rain to the extent that our beautiful green took on the appear-ance of a rooftop swimming pool;

that was the story throughout December. Wellies and sou’westers were more appro-priate as compared to fl ats and whites. Some of us began to worry that we would grow webbed feet but so far there has been no report of any new abnormalities!

We did manage to play one end on the afternoon of the Christmas carnival having waited an hour for the rain to stop and an-other 45 minutes for the able bodied men to squeegee the green. All to no avail so it was an early bath followed by reconvening in the Tangles where a few (ha ha) drinks were taken prior to the serving of a superb Christmas dinner organized as usual by our talented Devi Hodgkinson. The F&B boys and girls aided by the staff of the Tangles worked long and hard and we would like them to know that we much appreciate what they did for us.

Chris Claridge was, as usual, a talented Master of Cer-emonies, kept us giggling and conducted the carol sing-ing competition which has become a highly competitive feature of the Christmas Carnival. There was no doubt about the winners but some would say that the antics of one youngish lady, namely LPT also known as small Rodger brought home the bacon. What a performance!

Because of the inclement weather some of the 2011 competitions remain to be completed but we shall en-sure that all results are available in time for the next newsletter.

Turn the frowns upside down. See you on the Green soon

Perched among rocks at a depth of 15m, my eyes are trained on a Grey Reef Shark moving gradually towards me. It approaches at eye level. I raise my

camera and take aim. It is some 10 meters away from me….6 meters….3 meters…..a meter. Now within touch-ing distance, it turns slowly and swims by me. Behind it, I see another shark. Behind that one, another. Nine sharks in all, circling and covering the same ground over and over again. I have seen up to twenty sharks at a time on previous dives here. I am diving in Ulong Channel in Palau, Micronesia, one of my all-time favourite dive sites.

Palau is an incredible place. Breathtakingly beautiful, Palau features Micronesia’s richest fl ora and fauna both on land and under water. I fi rst visited Palau in 1994 on

a Tanglin Club dive expedition. The diving was out-standing. I celebrated my 200th dive in Palau that year. I returned to Palau in 2004, and was surprised to fi nd that the diving seemed to be even better than I remem-bered it to be a decade earlier.

I did my 1000th dive on that second trip at Blue Corner, Palau’s most famous dive site. That was one of those dives I will never forget. In a ripping current, secured onto the top of a reef wall by a reef hook, I watched more than a dozen sharks glide effortlessly by amongst dense schools of snapper, surgeonfi sh, triggerfi sh and fusiliers. Occasionally, huge Dogtooth Tuna, Giant Trevally and grouper appeared within the schools. Beside me on the reef throughout much of the dive was an amiable Napoleon Wrasse almost the size of

SCUBA

a small car. When I turned to look behind me, I saw, on the reef fl at, schools of swirling Barracuda, Big Eye Jacks and a White Tip Reef Shark or two. To top if off, just as I was about to unhook myself and drift off to end the dive, a Spotted Eagle Ray swooped down dramatically and glided right past me. Reef diving just does not get better than that!

Palau will be a familiar name to World War II history buffs as one of its islands, Peliliu, was the scene of one of the fi ercest battles in the Pacifi c. The taking of Peliliu was planned as a two-day mission, but the resilience of the Imperial army resulted in a three-month long battle which claimed the lives of 1,800 US marines and over 10,000 Japanese soldiers. Many WWII artifacts remain on the island, a solemn reminder of that horrifi c battle. Underwater, Peliliu offers some of the most exciting dives in the Pacifi c and a chance to encounter some of the larger shark species. The currents, however, can be a little tricky to deal with, especially the down currents. On my last dive there, for example, I paused at about 21m to photograph a turtle but found myself at 30m after taking the shot.

Palau is one of those rare locations where the coral and reef life, especially the shark population, seem to get healthier and more abundant with time. This is nothing short of remarkable in this age of rapid global environmental deterioration brought on by unsustain-able harvesting of the oceans’ resources, pollution by mankind and emission-driven changes in weather pat-terns. This did not occur by accident. It is the result of careful and strategic planning, and diligent implemen-tation of environmental protection laws and practical measures. Palau may not be a particularly sophisticated nation but when it comes to saving our planet, there is evidently much that the Palauan government can teach the rest of the world.

I made my fourth trip to Palau this past October. For my wife, Yut Wah, it was her third visit. It most cer-tainly won’t be our last.

December was a fairly quiet months for squash events, but many took the opportunity to keep burning calories to combat the impact of festive

season eating.

SSRA/TANGLIN CLUB LEXIAN DOUBLES TOURNAMENT

Over 80 players took part in the SSRA/Tanglin Club Lexian Doubles tournament over the week end of 10-11/12/11. This is an annual National Championships organized by The Tanglin Club in conjunction with the SSRA for residents of Singapore. There were two catego-ries, the Open and the Veterans (over 50), and both were keenly contested with the spectators being treated to a very high level of Squash. Ages ranged from 17 to 67 and Tanglin Section Members featured prominently, with Shane Hagan and Paul Isted winning the Open event and Darcy McColl and Ashley Gunning emerging as vic-tors in the Veterans. Both fi nals were played to a full gallery and thanks to the Sports and Recreation depart-ment’s staff, who gave up their week end to help with the organization, the tournament ran very smoothly.

Thank you very much to Graham Dare of Lexian, who was our sponsor for the third year.

THE TANGLIN CLUB HOSTS WORLD RANKED TENNIS LADIES FOR TRAINING

The Tanglin Club was honoured to play host to some world ranked tennis ladies during the Singa-pore Women’s Tennis Exhibition event.

The ladies including US Open champion Sam Stosur, Polish World Number 8 Radwanska, Chinese top player Peng Shuai, and fan’s favourite Hantuchova trained hard at The Tanglin Club courts and provided the spectators with a glimpse of what goes on behind the scene. The crowd was thrilled with the ladies’ hard hitting, fi tness and consistency but the highlight was that all the play-

ers kindly signed autographs and posed for pictures with our members and kids afterwards. Some even walked away with lucky draw prizes!

Thank you to all the Members who gave up their court time and the good service from The Tanglin staff, which the players have commented on.

We hope the WTA will bring the offi cial tournament to Singapore next year and we will have another chance to host even more world ranked players.

GOOD START TO THE NEW YEAR

Happy New Year to all. Last year ended with our annual tennis dinner and everyone had a fun night in the new Churchill Room. Vincent Lam

did an excellent job as MC and had us all guessing with his tennis trivia. We moved on to team karaoke, and dis-covered some real talent in the tennis section.

The evening ended with some dancing. Thanks to eve-ryone that made it a memorable evening.

On a different note we are getting new lights on the outdoor courts.

The work will start on January 30th 2012 and should be completed by March 5.

We hope you will not be too inconvenienced by the disruption, but by March we will not only have the best indoor courts in Singapore but also some of the best out-door courts.

See you on the courts!

MEN’S TENNIS TEAM GAINS PROMOTION TO ‘A’ GRADE

The Tanglin Club Men’s 1st team gained promotion to “A” grade for the fi rst time in the Club’s history after reaching the fi nal of the STA Interclub Dou-

bles League. We started the season with an excellent 3-0 win against last year’s champion Sanwa followed by a walkover win against SIA when the fl ying crew diverted their plane after seeing our strong team line up.

The next match against Law Society came down to the wire and we were just edged out 2-1 in the last game of the last set of the last match. A tight win against NTUC with 2 pairs both winning 6-4 in the third set ensured us a place at Kallang and a strong 3-0 win against Burghley put the Tanglin team top of the qualifi cation.

In the semi-fi nal, our team battled hard under the mid-day Kallang sun and surprisingly won 2-1 against a good NTUC team, even without our top players Taco and Ber-nard. In the fi nal, we came up against the very strong Singapore Police Force, who had beaten everyone 3-0 (they were in the “A” grade for the last 3 years) but we showed good strength and did well to ensure it will be a tough day at the offi ce for both sides.

Congratulations to all the players for a great season – Bernard, Mark, Cornelis, Waldemar, Miles, Chris, An-drew, Devesh, Taco, En Lai, CT and Vincent and we were all presented with trophies by the President at the an-nual dinner!

For the 2012 season, we may consider fi elding 2 Men’s teams – a grade A/B team and a C/D team. Players inter-ested in joining the 1st and 2nd squads, please let the sports desk know or contact the tennis captain on 9235 0140 or [email protected]

The Twilight Saga spawned from a series of four vampire-themed fantasy romance novels written by American author Stephenie Meyer, and tells

the tale of the protagonist Isabella Swan, a teenage girl who moves to Forks, Washington, and falls in love with a 104-year-old vampire named Edward Cullen, who is still in the body of a teenager.

The Saga launched the careers of its now-famous ac-tors - Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner - into stardom, with hoardes of fans gracing their events. The fi rst four fi lms have broken box offi ce records, and have now become household names.

The fi rst four fi lms - Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn: Part 1 - will be shown in an exclusive one-month weekend screening for die-hard fans and for those who have heard of the hype, but have not watched the entertaining series.

Immerse yourself in the nocturnal legends of vam-pires and wolves, and in the hope of everlasting love between souls as different as night and day.
