FEBRUARY 2013

THE 40 MILE IMPACT2012 YEAR IN REVIEWCHANGING THE WORLD FIVE FEET AT A TIME

A SPECIAL TRIBUTETO OUR DONORS

FROM THE DESK OFSCOTT BROSMANWelcome to the new Tales. The format is new but the traditions of Camp remain the same. We hope you will find this new format enjoyable. In the future we will be bringing you stories that highlight Tecumseh staff, both present and past. Camp Tecumseh staff is the heart of what make this place so special. Many have taken the great skills, values and enthusiasm they shared with campers here out into “the real world”.2012 was a spectacular year for Camp Tecumseh. The numbers are big, 36,661 people experienced Camp Tecumseh. The real story is not in the numbers, but what happens to all of those people because of their experience here. Campers and their parents say it best:Camp Tecumseh is much more than an awesome, fun-filled camp experience, it is also a spiritual shot in the arm for our children. The Christ-like love and guidance you give our children is priceless!- parent of resident camperWe feel [our son] is in a safe, nurturing, extremely positive place while he is at Tecumseh. There is a noticeable difference in his attitude and outlook when we pick him up on Saturday morning.- parent of resident camper, age 11This was our daughter’s first sleep-away camp and she absolutely loved it! The counselors are so welcoming and loving and make the week so fun foreveryone. We can’t wait to come back next summer. - parent of 9 year old resident camperMany campers and staff say they wish the rest of the world could be likecamp. So let’s do it. Let’s take Camp Tecumseh out into the world! Followthe Camp motto, “I am Third” every day and help make the rest of theworld more like camp. This special issue of the The Tales honors our generous donors. Theirgifts have made possible many of our unique facilities and innovativeprograms that define Camp Tecumseh. Their generosity also helped 4,158 campers have a camp experience that other- wise would not have been possible. To all of our donors and camper families I say thank you for your confidence in our ministry. Yours,

If everyone who came to camp formed a city, it would be the 3rd largest city in South Dakota.

That many people would sell out a Red Sox game at Fenway Park.

How do you measure impact? Smiles and warmed hearts don’t appear in the pie charts and spreadsheets we use to quantify success. We can’t tally every uncontrollable burst of laughter, every heart touching story, or every moment of awe. We certainly can’t calculate things like faith or self-confidence. However, there are some things we do count, and we can learn much from these numbers. Beneath these statistics are the stories that range from lunch room conversations to conquered fears. The numbers themselves don’t tell these stories. Rather, they demonstrate the overwhelming amount of stories that happen as a result of camp. Camp Tecumseh isn’t special because people come to visit. It’s special because those visitors leave with stories and experiences that make the world a little bit better.

Camp Tecumseh is in the impact business. We want to change the world. In 2012 we were fortunate enough to serve 36,661 people. If those people all stood in a row and held hands, the line would stretch for 40 miles. That’s 40 miles of stories and experiences which enrich both the Camp Tecumseh community, and the communities our visitors come from. That’s 40 miles of impact. In 2013 we want to add to that total, five feet at a time.

GRATEFULLY ACKNOWLEDGEDMaking a Difference Fund Project 441 Brackets for Good YMCA Camp Tecumseh is exceedingly blessed with gracious donors. Their annual or monthly gifts to camp make a difference every day in the lives of less advantaged campers who have had a Tecumseh experience in Outdoor Education, Summer Camp, or Retreats. Camp’s inaugural Project 441 campaign ignited the hearts of summer staff, alumni, and parents to help sponsor at least one camper per cabin in 2013. We offer our deepest gratitude to those who have made a commitment to Camp Tecumseh this year through their gifts.

Trailblazers are those special friends of camp who have made provision, generally through their estate plans, for a gift to the YMCA Camp Tecumseh Endowment Fund. Their generosity is a commitment to the ongoing positive development of young people through camp. They share the knowledge that Camp Tecumseh is a powerful influence in helping young men and women achieve their highest potential. Through their support of camp, members of the Trailblazer Society help lead the way for future generations of Tecumseh campers. They leave a legacy that will be deeply appreciated for generations.

Note: Trailblazers recognized with an * have gone to be with the Lord

CAPITAL GIFTSThere is always something new at Camp Tecumseh. Projects like the Gish Adventure Outpost give campers a magnificent destination to explore while they grow in confidence. Remodeling many of the River Village cabins provides a better space for cabin-groups to connect. Completing four new duplex cabins in Oregon Territory gives even more children the opportunity to grow in their faith in the coming years. Our generous capital donors help provide new and upgraded facili-ties for all campers to enjoy. On behalf of the miles of impacted campers and their families who will use these facilities in the years to come, we thank them for their generous support of YMCA Camp Tecumseh.
