Thanksgiving is here, and Christmas is right around the corner. We enjoy being with family reflecng on what we are thankful for, and looking forward to celebrang the me when God came to us to save us and give us life. We have much to be grateful for. It is important to name the many ways our God provides, protects, and lavishes us with His blessings, especially His very self – Jesus, who is our savior, Lord, and friend. He makes us His children with all the blessings of heaven. We are King’s kids. That makes us brothers and sisters in Christ. “We are family.” This year we have been preaching and teaching about the family Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights. God has called us to be family. Our church moo reminds us, “We are a Shelter in Christ transforming lives.” As we focus on learning what it means to be and live as God’s family our theme verses for the year are I Thessalonians 4:9-10: “Now about your love for one another we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. "And in fact, you do love all of God’s family throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more.” We are called to love each other. Love is selfless, giving, an acon we take to express to each other the way God has loved us. We are to each other brothers and sisters to be “a shelter in Christ transforming lives” and to the community in which we live. We can see it happening already in so many ways both within the family of Charity and the ministries reaching out to our community and world. Many are involved in receiving ministry, as well as reaching out and using your giſts to serve others. That is what the family of Christ is called to do, and it is happening here at Charity. For that, I want to say thank you for giving yourself to loving, serving and giving to Jesus and each other. During the last few months, Vision Council, along with staff leadership at Charity, has been keeping close tabs on the money – income and spending. We have talked, strategized, and, most of all, prayed – asking God’s wisdom and guidance and thanking Him for his provision. We have sought to keep you informed as we are all a part of the Charity family. We have tried to be good stewards of the Lord’s money, and – the money you have generously given to further God’s ministries here at Charity. At this me we are running significantly behind our expenses. We have put some money away in planning for a shorall but are using that reserve as well. You can look elsewhere in this newsleer if you wish to see specifics about that shorall. I do not oſten share with you about the finances of Charity or what God’s perspecves are about giving, but I think that it is me I do so. This not about a guilt trip or lecturing you. Thanksgiving is here, and Christmas is right around the corner. We enjoy being with family reflecting on what we are thankful for, and looking forward to celebrating the time when God came to us to save us and give us life. We have much to be grateful for. This year we have been preaching and teaching about the family Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights. God has called us to be family. We are called to love each other. Love is selfless, giving, an action we take to express to each other the way God has loved us. We are to each other brothers and sisters to be “a shelter in Christ transforming lives” and to the community in which we live. This Christmas is a wonderful time of year, a time of celebration. First, as we gather with family and friends to give thanks to God, and then as we prepare for the coming of Jesus at Christmastime, it

also means that 2019 is soon coming to a close.

As the accompanying chart shows, through October, Charity is running a deficit of $170,000. For the finances of the church, my prayer is that Charity can stay even in income and expenses for November and that we’re able to

zero that deficit out by December 31. That would mean that, on average, 340 households would each contribute an additional $500 over their regular giving this year. That’s a big prayer. We have a big God! With a proposed budget that’s a $100,000 lower next year, that would still allow us to retain a reserve amount to help through the summer months. Please read articles by Pr. Scott and Vision Council President Matt Kaldor in this newsletter.

With 2020 in sight, my personal prayer, and for the Charity family, is from the 13th Century by Richard of Chichester, “Day by day, dear Lord, of thee three things I pray: to see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, follow thee more nearly, day by day.”

VISION COUNCIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2019

Staff Leadership Reports Pastor Scott reported on his trip to Israel, that people grew in faith and it was overall a really good trip. He stated that this trip is rewarding for him as a pastor, because it allows him to witness peoples’ faith come alive as they experience Israel. He expressed his appreciation for the time away to make this trip to Israel.

Pastor Scott reported that the GriefShare event on “Surviving the Holidays”, held in mid-November with other churches, went well. The event focused on helping people to cope with Thanksgiving and Christmas in the absence of a loved one.

Financial Report Dallas reported that October giving totaled $70,543, which is $33,539 under budget and $18,601 less than actual expenses for the month. October 2019 income was lower than October 2018 income by $38,995. Spending in October was below budget by $14,938, with year-to-date expenses lower than budget by $32,198. Year-to-date income lags expenses by $169,511.

Note: Charity’s monthly financial report is available for review, by members of the congregation, in the office. Please contact Doug Leet or Judy Smith to review.

Administrator’s Report Doug distributed a summary of various church metrics and a comparison to prior years, which metrics were discussed in detail. Matt requested refinement of certain metrics in order to more accurately isolate specific trends for ministry planning purposes.

Old Business Attendance was good at the open budget forms, held to gain congregational input on the preliminary 2020 budget. Discussion ensued on the development of plans for adhering to the 2020 budget, including a formal plan to address shortfalls on a timely basis and ensure a healthy church budget plan.

New Business Doug reported on the status of expiring Vision Council terms. Plans are being made for a congregational vote on replacements at the Annual Meeting.

Next Meeting Date The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 10.

Just in time for Christmas gifting.

Who are Stephen Ministers?Stephen Ministers are laypeople trained to provide one-to-one, Christ-centered care. They have a compassionate heart for those who are hurting, and they’re equipped with caring ministry skills by their congregation’s Stephen Leaders.

A Stephen Minister typically has one care receiver at a time and meets with that person once a week to listen, care, pray, encourage, and offer emotional and spiritual support.

In what types of situations do Stephen Ministers provide care?

Stephen Ministers provide care to individuals facing difficult times in life—grief, cancer, divorce, financial difficulties, hospitalization, chronic illness, job loss, disability, loneliness, a spiritual crisis, or other life struggles.

Greetings from Vision Council. As we move into the holiday season, we also near our Annual Meeting of the Voters’ Assembly. I welcome you to join us after services on Sunday, Dec. 15, as we review the

past year and look forward to the year ahead.

As we’ve moved through this past year, Dallas has provided a couple of video financial updates during services. A financial report is printed monthly in the newsletter as well. As has been presented and reported, income so far in 2019 is well short of the budget approved at the last Annual Meeting.

Income and expenses are reviewed as a standard agenda item at Vision Council meetings, and efforts have

been made to reduce spending where appropriate. Also, as a result of the income shortage, when positions have been vacated on staff, the responsibilities of those positions have been reassigned to existing staff to reduce our overall staffing numbers. The team has taken this challenge on, and we appreciate the extra effort that it has taken to assume the additional responsibilities.

As many of these adjustments came later in the year, realizing significant expense reductions for the current year is challenging.

For the remainder of the year, please join us in praying that God will provide per His plan for the rest of the year and we can start 2020 in a good financial position.

As we continue into 2020, a budget will be presented at the annual meeting showing a reduction of 8 percent compared to the 2019 budget. We hope to see you all there on Sunday, Dec. 15, following the 11 a.m. service.

From Pastor Bob and Patti Nordvall – East European Mission Network

I have come so whoever believes“I have come as a light into the world that whoever believes in me should not abide in darkness.” John 12:46

It was the last mile on the dark snowy road coming to Grandma’s house for Christmas Eve. In the distance, the light of three candles in the living room window penetrated the black winter night and beckoned with warmth and peace – the memory, the image imprinted, comes even now after 65 years – light, splitting the darkness and pushing it away. But the boy and the man find comfort and safety when the seeking light overcomes the haunting night.

Isn’t this what Christmas is about? Our ever-seeking Lord Jesus comes yet

again visiting hearts and calling us to His Light; even in the deepest darkness, we can see Him coming, arms and heart redemptively open.

By the time you read this, we will already be back from Estonia and Latvia, where we can share the Light of Jesus in countries that know much about darkness. Christians there share their rescue deeply from the dreadful oppression of communism and scientific atheism. We are always blessed, even as we hope to be a blessing.

But the Light of Christmas does something else. While it leads to rescue, it exposes our need for forgiveness and the treacherous power of sin at work

in our lives. And so Jesus says, “I have come so that whoever believes in me should not abide in darkness?” The joy of Christmas is experienced most deeply in our surrender to Jesus Christ, Light of the world.

Our sincere thanks to all of you who were able to share financial gifts and prayers, making this journey to Estonia and Latvia possible. And thank you to all who so generously support Tartu Academy of Theology and now the Home of Hope endeavor.

May the joy of Christmas fill your hearts and lives this year as you take steps away from the dark.

(CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1)

I am challenged in my prayer times and daily walk with God to realize it is precisely at these times that God is asking me to trust Him. Often we want to be self-reliant, not needing anything from anyone – “We can provide for ourselves, thank you.” Budgeting and managing the money God has given us is a good thing. However, not trusting God with “our” money reflects on how we do not trust Him on what is already His. God and His purposes and ministries are the first to be X-ed off my list when the financial crunch comes.

First, we need to take our faith seriously when we write the first check each month to God – the first, not the last. God’s Word reminds us, “Bring the whole tithe (10 percent) into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and you see if I will not throw open the flood-gates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room

enough for it.” (Malachi 4:10)

During these times of economic crunch, God is calling us to trust Him with our whole life.

“Test ME,” God says, “Give to me a 10 percent of what you earn and let it be the first check you write and see how I will not only provide for you but bless you.”

It is the only place in the Bible that God asks us to test Him – and it is with our finances. We are not told what the blessing will be, just that He will bless us. I have seen it over and over again in my life. From the time when I was single and living on $600 a month until today, God has blessed me. Even as I have trusted God in my finances and given 10 percent to Him in those days like today.

I realize for some of you, maybe a lot of you, that percentage is not do-able. I say to you, look at what you are giving today and increase it by even one percent. Let it be the first check you write, and you

will see how God will take care of you and bless you richly.

Giving, need not be a burden; it can be a blessing. It can indeed be an “I get to,” rather than “I have to.” God has given so much to us, even His own life. That is how much God has invested in us. He wants us to give to Him in response to all that He has given us. Take that leap; trust him with your finances. Review your current giving as a percentage of your income and increase it toward the goal of a full tithe. (10 percent of your income). Establish a regular giving plan if you do not already have one. It will be a little scary at times, wondering where the money will come from to pay the bills, but as you do, you will see God at work as He provides for your needs and blesses you.

I look forward to seeing what God has in store for us and am thankful to Him foremost for giving all for us and then to each one of you who make up this Charity family.

From Maggie Portra, Elementary Director

There's a whole lot of activity in the youth areaThe difference between the children's Christmas service and Jingle Jam?Love Has ComeThe children’s Christmas services are the annual Sunday and Wednesday services featuring Charity’s children. This year’s theme is “Love Has Come,” and the children have been working hard to prepare their songs to share.

Services will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, with an abbreviated version, followed by the full Sunday School classes at 9:15 and 11 a.m.

There will also be a service at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11. Please plan on arriving early as seats tend to fill quickly.

Jingle JamJingle Jam is what we call an FX (family experience). It’s geared towards elementary-aged kids, and their parents. The goal is to provide those families with a Christmas experience they can easily carve into their schedule. We’ll start in the sanctuary for the FX service – think of it as a cross between a typical elementary large group and a comedy hour – before moving into the fellowship hall for activities such as cookie decorating, hot cocoa drinking, crafts, and more. Jingle Jam takes place at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18. Children’s Christmas Services:

LOVE HAS COMEDon’t miss Charity’s annual Children’s Christmas Services at 8, 9:15 and 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, and 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11.

Preschoolers will perform their songs near the beginning of each service (there will be no preschool portion at the 8 a.m. service). Please bring your preschoolers to their regular classroom 10 to 15 minutes before the start of service. Their leaders will walk them up to the sanctuary, and when they have finished singing, bring them back downstairs where they will remain for the rest of the service.

Elementary students have registered in advance for the service they will be attending. Parents, please refer to the email you received for arrival times and instructions. After the elementary portion of the service, students will return for the children’s sermon and then will sit together until the service ends.

It’s almost time to Jingle Jam! We’re so excited to celebrate the season with Charity’s kids and parents! Jingle Jam is designed for elementary students and their parents. While preschoolers may also enjoy the FX, it may not be ideal for babies. A nursery will be provided for children aged two and under.

This semester has been a busy one. We have been going through the book, Spiritual Disciplines of a Disciple and understanding what Jesus meant when He said: “Go, Therefore, and make disciples of all nations…”

We have also been playing games related to our theme of SURVIVOR.

Our theme for this year is 2 Timothy 2:10, “So I am willing to endure anything if it will bring salvation and eternal glory to Christ Jesus and to those God has chosen.”

The goal is to realize we need to Engage, Embrace, and Endure to survive in this world as a believer in Christ. Engaging others and finding people and places that are safe. Embracing our circumstances and especially the times of life we can not control. And lastly, Enduring through it all and making it to the end, realizing it is going to bring God glory.

Here is how the game works: There are 12 members of each tribe. Each week we have a challenge between the five tribes

– Asher, Naphtali, Zebulun, Judah, and the Leaders. We compete in competition with our tribes to win. If you are in the top three, you win immunity and are safe. However, if you are the bottom two tribes, you have to go to Tribal Council and vote a member off your tribe. In the end, there will be only one survivor, and they will win $100 cash.

So far, we are down to 40 survivors out of the original 48. One of the contests this year was tribes bringing in nonperishable food items. Within two weeks, the youth brought in over 500 food items. In December, the food items will be given to low-income families in the community and the ConnectKIDS ministry.

Personally, as the high school director, I have seen tremendous growth in many different students. We started reading Bible plans together on the YouVersion Bible app, and it’s impressive to see these students get into the Word. Secondly, I have seen tribes bond and new friendships made. Students need to feel connected and appreciated, and the

tribes have come together over the last month. Lastly, we have had a couple of students share their stories on Wednesday nights, and this has brought an incredible sense of encouragement to the body as a whole.

I’m blessed and proud to work with such amazing students; the key is to figure out how to disciple them in a way that allows them to be faithful lifetime followers of Christ.

We can always use more help – Small group leaders, bringing snacks, hosting events, providing support and mentorship, prayer, etc. If you are feeling tugged in your heart to be a part of the youth ministry here at Charity, please let me know, and I would love to help you find ways you can get involved.
