If you stay up late enough you might see the Northern Lights; this is a 1949 news article, notice the reporter waxes poetic on the pink snow. Read more online: the Stories tab on glaciergazette.com.
SKIING...In all started backin the 1930s when a group of local skiers
built a cabin...
As early as 1935, a little ski club known as the Hell-Roaring Ski Club, set up shop in the Hell Roaring Creek area with a small, ski-in cabin that marking what would become Whitefish Mountain Resort. This area is immortalized in the Hellroaring Basin. A year later the club cleared the Hell Roaring slope for ski runs and in 1939 the first high school race, complete with 400 spectators and 86 participants, occurred on the slope. The Satan’s Mountaineer-ing Club was born, much to the chagrin of local pastors. To grow to a true mountain ‘resort’ would take the support of a town and the dedication of several skiing kingpins. These skiing forefathers had the dream before ski resorts were even a twinkle in the eye of most Americans.READ MORE online...www.glaciergazette.com. Click on the ski image above on the homepage.

Chill
No one beside the local taxider-mist had more hunting tropies (8 on the back wall alone) than Boarding House owner, Ma Raimey, pictured on left. Boarding houses were common in Western railroad towns like Whitefish. Board included meals, but baths were a sepa-rate affair. Bathhouses adver-tised a nickel a soak on up. Ma Raimey occupied the building that now is home to Wasabi restaurant & Chill Clothing. CHECK WITH JILL EVANS

Whitefish is a mini-mecca of cross country ski spots. The Glacier Nordic Center is located at the Whitefish Golf Course. This little section is nearby
town and offers 12 km of groomed trails for cross-country and skate-skiers. Kids are welcome. Further north of Whitefish, the Stillwater Nordic Center is set back
in the trees and evergreen scent of the Stillwater State Forest. Their 20 km of terrain challenges all levels of skiers and overnight cabins that make for family fun. For a more backcountry experience, Round Meadows offers intermittently groomed trails and beautiful backcountry. The interconnecting loops are hours of adventure, but this area has no services. With acres of National Forest Service land, the Flathead Valley has endless op-portunities GO ONLINE FOR MORE INFO.
