WovenWoven carpet may be in a tiny minority oftoday’s production but still produces someof the finest carpets which are used forprestigious installations.

AxminsterThe pile of the carpet is inserted into thebacking as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvetysurface. The process locks in the fibre tocreate a carpet of high durability andperformance retention as well as a luxuryfeel. The process allows for intricate designsand colours to be used – although moderntrends mean that the traditional patternedaxminster has given way to current fashiontrends for plain carpets.

WiltonWilton woven carpets are produced in asimilar way to axminsters – the principaldifference being that a continuous fibre iswoven all the way through. The carpet canbe sheared to create a range of cut andloop textured effects. The result is a highquality carpet of unrivalled durability.

Flat weaveManufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows theyarn to be woven across a wider area tocreated a flatter, more textured effect.

Flooring factsheetCarpet types

TuftedWith advances in manufacturing technology,95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll ofcarpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed throughthe primary backing fabric to form loops ortufts, which may be left as is or cut.

A heavy adhesive coating is applied to holdthe tufts in place and a secondary backing isusually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures canthen be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILEBerber – Berber carpets look like and arenamed after a handmade, bulky wool carpetmade by the Berber tribes of North Africaand Asia. The loops are made from thick orbulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushionedeffect underfoot. These carpets are available inan assortment of colours and may be fleckedand can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop –When all the loops are of thesame height, a highly flexible and durablecarpet is created which has a natural, casualappearance even when (commonly) it is madefrom synthetic fibres. The tight loop texturetends to hide marks so it’s a good blendbetween luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop –The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to createinformal, random textures which are veryforgiving for marks and stains and thereforevery suitable for high traffic areas and busyfamily rooms.

BONDEDBonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are createdby firing fibres into an adhesive material – thefibres are not stitched into the backing in anyway. The technique is principally used forcommercial carpet tiles.

CUT PILE Freize – Frieze or frisée (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but theyarns are more tightly twisted and shouldalways be heat set. They have a dense, low pilesurface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture.Frieze carpets are very durable and hidefootprints, dust and dirt, which makes themsuitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony – Saxony textures are made oftwisted yarns, which should be heat set. Thetips remain very distinct, rather than blendingtogether to form a very elegant finish. Saxonytextures show footprints and vacuum marksso are suitable for more occasional rooms inthe home. More textured variations improvethe practicality of saxonies.

Twist –The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twistedand often heatset to retain this feature andthe result is a versatile, textured finish that isideal for plain colours.

Velvet –Velvet textures (sometimes called‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have a level surface pileof approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is thensheared to give a smooth finish. With verylittle twist in the yarn, the ends blend togetherwhich then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use.Footprints show easily and the colour looksdifferent from place to place because fibreslying in different directions reflect the lightdifferently. A luxury for occasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOPWhen some of the pile is cut and other left asloop, a variety of surface textures and patternscan be created (in a variety of colours). Themulti-level surface is excellent for hidingfootprints and stains so cut and loop is goodfor high traffic areas and general purposerooms in the home.

Shag pile – Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the textureis casual and loose but the surface can flatteneasily and may lack durability.

Key benefits

Why join?

Pick the right one

Increase margins

• Group purchases to get beneficial rates

• Rebates

• Exclusive higher-margin products

• Special promotions

One of the key reasons to join a buying group is tobenefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulk buyerfrom manufacturers. The way discounts and rebates arepassed on to members varies between groups so makesure it’s absolutely clear how this will be done. You’ll needto work out how this compares with discounts you havealready negotiated locally with preferred suppliers.

Access professional services

• Business and financial services

• IT and internet support

• Training and workshops

• Professional bodies

Some buying groups offer an excellent range of otherservices which may be valuable to your business. Financialservices include invoice factoring, credit, loans andinsurance. Some of the more sophisticated groups offeringmarketing packages, software systems to help you runyour business operations and customised websites readyto use. Relationships with professional and trainingorganisations can also offer discounts.

Increase sales

• Best of both worlds’ proposition

• Wider ranges and exclusive products

• POS, displays and merchandising supportYour customers will like the proposition that you areindependent but with the buying power of a group – thisgives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ withpersonal service and competitive pricing. Most groups willalso offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support with point-of-sale, merchandising and displays. Central stockholdingmay also be on offer.

Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferred manufacturers

• Regular meetings and supplier presentations

• Regional workshops

• Helpline

A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment ofbeing independent but not alone out there on the HighStreet. Groups hold regular meetings and some have theirown trade shows, regional meetings and workshops tohelp you develop your business. The network gives yousomeone to call when you need advice on, for example,an unusual installation, a technical consumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

How to decide whether to join a buying group– and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently

• Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a memberof the committee

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s thenext nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any fees that would relate to your membership, howthe bills are paid and whether your fees arerefundable if it doesn’t work out. Ask the buyinggroup for a consultation to estimate your potentialsavings

• Review all the extra benefits and services to seewhat you would actually use

• Check out the product ranges offered including theown-label options and the UK/European mix

• Ensure you understand any rules that may limit yourflexibility to run your business the way you want

Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of thefloor retailing scene in the last decade or so, givingindependents the extra edge they need to competeeffectively with the retail park chains.

More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of theseveral buying groups which operate in our sector and thenumbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident,the resistance to the buying group concept among non-members appears to be centred on fears of surrenderingsome control to a committee – and most particularlycompromising long-established relationships and negotiatedterms with current suppliers.

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling acrossa broad range of products is likely to improve marginswithin a buying group – but you don’t need a leap of faithto join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Flooring factsheet

Good underlay will...• Improve underfoot comfort• Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening• Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear• Improve thermal insulation and warmth• Increase sound insulation• Smooth out sub-floor imperfections• Last the lifetime of the carpet

Poor or old underlay will...• Feel hard and unwelcoming• Reduce carpet life• Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots• Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly• Not meet British Standards

How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working withgripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavytraffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination ofthickness and density is all important as a thick underlaywith low density may not perform well. Typically, thethicker the underlay, the better quality it will need tobe – 11mm is often used for luxury installations with9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet andlaminate flooring offers retailers one of the bestopportunities to add value to every sale – with goodprofitability, trade-up potential once benefits areunderstood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that new underlayis always required, the only decision is which type. It’salso a good target-setter for sales staff.

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers canwalk on samples with different grades of underlay andfeel the difference has shown excellent results – somemanufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

Underlay

Sponge rubberThe market’s most popular underlay is available in flat orwaffle patterns in a wide range of weights for differentapplications. It performs well for comfort and has adurable spring retention.

PU (polyurethane) foamPU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typicallymade from recycled foam offcuts. The foam providesexcellent comfort and performance levels with lots ofthickness options and densities – and its light weight helpshandling. The product can be re-cycled again after use.

Crumb rubberFlat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort(and very good over stair nosings).

Laminate underlayThere’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminateflooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floorand helping the boards float above any imperfections inthe sub-surface.

CombinationA rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a goodcombination of protection, durability and comfort. It alsoallows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

Underfloor heating underlayAlways ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturersoffer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with acombined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which meansthe underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

FeltThis traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay ismade from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – tocreate a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation.Still a very popular choice among contractors whenstretch fitting woven carpets.

Pre-tackified underlayA self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefeltand PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfortis desired.

Flooring factsheetCarpet trouble-shooter • shedding • pulled loops

Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyerremains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separateproduction the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sampleto ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.

This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance issubjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement ofthe head dyer based on his/her experience.

A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.

N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in differentdirections, even though they be from the same batch will appear notto match. For further information please check with themanufacturers recommendations.

Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpethas been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenanceprogramme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to preventsoiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which containssugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave sticky soap residues in thefibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil carpets in various ways, apartfrom the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, darklines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuum-drawnthrough poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboardscan be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spotson the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and thecarpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.

It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when thecarpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboardsand the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to sealdraughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaintis to be avoided.

Colour matching

Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics andobjects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up ofstatic electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is dischargedwhen a person makes contact with an object which can conductelectricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc).

The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, airhumidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated withsynthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it canand does occur with wool in very dry room conditions.

Preventative measures include the introduction of moisture into theroom or in situ carpet treatment.

Static

Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fadecan vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions towhich the carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found indaylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just asexposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair.

Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions justas you would protect other furniture or fabrics.

A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meetthe required shade standard when tested to the British StandardBS1006 (1990).

Fading on Wool

Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface andstand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end ofthe tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of Vshaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts bescissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never bepulled out.

This information is given by responsible

manufacturers to help you help your

customer to make an informed choice.

The original carpet tile

• shedding • pulled loops • sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling

When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such asunder the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect thecarpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In thecase of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of thecarpet that becomes indented. The underlay will alsoindent and the backing of the carpet may also distort intothe indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s willrecover well and some less well depending upon theircomposition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups belowfurniture legs can spread the load and the net result is alarger area of less deeply indented carpet.

The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static loadcan be measured in the laboratory, using the test methoddescribed in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will havedata on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test thecarpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery ismeasured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are somany different underlay’s however, it is very rare for therecovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated oncarpet and underlay.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with arotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in thecase of serious indentations the use of an iron and dampcloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needleto carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care mustbe take not to over wet the carpet, of course.

Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventuallyflattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use.

All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degreedependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjectedand the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight)of the product concerned.

Flattening

Indentations

All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is createdduring production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff ’.

The effect varies with yarn type and may be removedwithout detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuumcleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of thetotal fibre contained in the carpet.

Shedding

Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one ormore loops in the continuous pile is pulled through theprimary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to somelocal condition, possibly some sharp object which hascaught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulledloops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending endlevel with the rest of the pile. They should not be left asthis could result in further loops being pulled anddeveloping into a ladder.

Pulling LoopsThe samples held by individual retailers may not be fromthe same batch as current production and thereforeshould be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.

Samples

Telephone National Institute of Carpet Fitters (NICF) forfurther information – 0115 958 3077.

Installation

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpetchanges direction and thus reflects light at different anglesshowing the effects of shading which can becomepermanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This canhappen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton,Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even CoirMatting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plaincarpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It canoccur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amountof research has been carried out over many years by manyinstitutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon butnone of it has proved conclusive.

There is no commonly known manufacturing process whichcan cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not amanufacturing fault. For further information please checkwith individual manufacturers recommendations.

Pile Reversal

Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has becomecrushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to thenatural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflectionat differing angles resulting in the creation of light and darkpatches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics butcan be more noticeable on plainer carpets because theshadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by aheavy pattern or design.

Shading

The Best Carpet Wool

Benefits of Wool Carpet

Wool carpets have a historic reputation for qualitybecause as a fibre it is known to withstand pressureand have excellent appearance retention properties. The best wool for carpet production is ‘strong’ wooland this is grown on sheep breeds found in Britainand New Zealand. Most carpets will contain bothBritish Wool and New Zealand Wool because BritishWool is more bulky and resilient and offers textureand unique heathery shades to carpet, whilst NewZealand wool is softer and whiter and particularlygood for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining thetwo within a blend for carpet yarn givesmanufacturers the perfect qualities for carpet.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool richWool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre;it has superior strength and does not need otherfibres to improve its performance. Howevermanufacturers choose to use synthetic fibres withinthe yarn blend for a number of reasons. Theseinclude fibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stainresistance, durability and cost. These wool richcompositions offer industry standard carpets whichwill perform well in the home.

Practical Strong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superiorperformance over many years as it can offer unique resilience andlong lasting durability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable‘bounce-back’ so that pile compression is resisted and the effects oftracking and shading are reduced – maintaining good appearanceover many years.

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance tosoiling due to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopicscales and as a result additional anti-soil treatments are notnecessary. Simply vacuuming the carpet will keep it looking goodand whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blottingwith white paper towels or an absorbent cloth is advised and willaddress many household spillages.

ComfortSoft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfortand warmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heatretention and energy efficiency.

Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions thehome against echo and room to room noise transfer.

SafetyFire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignitionrate and tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. Itmeets many safety regulations without additional treatments and isfavoured in contract locations for this reason.

Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floorwhich protects against serious injury in falls by the very young or theelderly.

Internal EnvironmentIndoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complexphysical and chemical structure, wool helps to create a balancedatmosphere in the home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it when the atmosphere becomes dry and helps improveair quality by absorbing airborne toxins in indoor air.

Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold finedust until vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in theatmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promotethe growth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/EnvironmentalNatural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool is both 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is anecessary part of animal husbandry this means that every year thereis a fresh supply of wool available for the carpet manufacturingindustry.

Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also incarpet production.

Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and willproduce nitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are allplant nutrients.

Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentallyresponsible fibre that has been measured in terms of its ecologicalimpact. A Life Cycle Analysis study carried out by Leeds Universityto ISO 14040 standard for British Wool concludes that it comparesfavourably when measured against man-made fibres.

For the second year in a row, Edel Grouphad been selected by the jury ofInnovations@DOMOTEX. This year, thejury selected Majestic, the 100%sustainable carpet. Majestic is createdusing post-consumer PET bottles only. Theyarn, primary and secondary backing areall produced using post-consumer PETbottles. In fact, to produce 1m2 Majestic,43 large PET-bottles are used!

New introductions DOMOTEX has been for years thetradeshow to show the latest additions to the product portfolio. This year EdelTelenzo launched, amongst otherproducts, Diversity and Cocoon.

Diversity is a beautiful carpet made of100% 3-ply wool in eight, two-tone tweed, colour combinations. The special constructiongives it a woven look-and-feel, it is non-directional and typically Edel Telenzo in its styling.

Cocoon is a super soft polyamide 6.6 loop pile and the sister-product to Pamina. It has anatural shine which reminds of cotton and the soft chalky colours only serve to enhance thateffect. Phil Hartley:“Cocoon is new, innovative and different; our customers loved it!”

It was another exciting start of the year! As every year for Edel Telenzo, the yearstarted in Hanover (Germany), at the world’s largest flooring show, DOMOTEX. Andagain, DOMOTEX proved to be fruitful and productive. “After experiencing a fewdifficult years, DOMOTEX seems to be on its way back. It was exciting and dynamicwith many innovative products and customers that are looking forward to a great2015 with a real optimism," says Phil Hartley, CEO Edel Telenzo UK.

Tartans and plaids have always been adecorating staple but in recent years wehave seen an increase in popularity. They have evolved far beyond the preserveof Scottish baronial castles into an accessible and versatile design statement.

Tartan and Plaids • Clanny carpet leads pattern styles

We contacted some of the UK’s leadingcarpet manufacturers to get their take ontoday’s tartans.

Town or country, period or modern,Brintons tartans look stunning anywhere. The Abbeyglen collection celebratesdistinctive Irish design in a sumptuous hand-crafted texture and its warm colour palettegives these carpets a rich, natural and

homely quality. The Abbotsford series comesin a wider selection of shades from neutralsthrough to the classic red, green and blueMaccines design. Woven axminsters in 4mwidth and an 80% wool/20% nylon blend,Abbeyglen and Abbotsford are exceptionallyhard-wearing. They make the perfectrecommendation for any room.

Influenced by the very latest fashions, thestunning Marquette Plaid by Adam Carpetshas been created using a contemporarydiagonal design rather than the traditionalstraight lines. It is available in 10 variedcolours, including both soft, natural shadesand bold vibrant colours. Manufactured usingthe optimum blend of 80% British wool and 20%nylon, this 2-ply tufted carpet will continue

to perform and lookbeautiful for years to come.

Whether it is a traditionalScottish tartan like the‘Glenmoy’ range or afashionable update of theclassic design such as‘Braeburn’, Ulster Carpets’designs instantly addwarmth and character. Many consumers arefearful of using the designon such a large area as thefloor; however the trick isto keep the rest of theinterior scheme neutraland not to introduce toomany patterns or colourswhich will fight with theplaid design. Should youwant to make a statement, the vibrant ‘Hamilton’range offers style inabundance while theneutral tones and subtlehighlights of the CountryHouse BeaumontCollection create atimeless, elegant interior.

Gary Bridge, Design Director at AxminsterCarpets explains - “Plaid is extremelyversatile, it brings a timeless appeal tointeriors and is a great way to includepattern on the floor. We are definitely seeingresurgence in tartan and plaids this seasonstraight from the catwalk.”

"We have a very strict policy of policing the brand whereby we willnot sell to wholesalers, installers, internet sellers, the insurancemarket or anyone who is not an appointed and authorised RivieraHome dealer. Neither will we sell to the big shed operators or othermanufacturers," says Mr Bullock. A small licensing fee ischarged for this exclusivity, which also includes attractive pointof sale display unitary and other selling aids.

Flooring One controller Glenn Harding says the grouprecognises that independents have different flooring needs andits objective is to offer “a compendium of services”. Its USPsinclude a central payment portfolio of 40+ suppliers and anannual marketing manual including high resolution photographyof carpets, rugs, vinyls, wood and LVT.

Other key benefits include an own label collection/fieldmerchandisers, procurement access to energy, fuel, insurance, credit and finance, internal membersnet communication facilityand an annual member trade show.

A recent email from a new member regarding their success in2014 began with “The move to Flooring One has been a greatdecision for many reasons.” Mr Harding says: “That¹s all I need

to hear!''

He says the group will not suit allindependents (eg, retailers under£250,000 annual sales). ''However weare a professional, friendly group working tohelp independent flooring specialists with theirretail needs, to be competitive, whilstimproving margins and overall profitability,'' he concludes.

Metro Group states it is unique in the way itnot only negotiates highly competitive priceswith leading manufacturers but also the waythat members are supported with marketing. For 20 years, it has developed Carpet 1st,allowing retailers to present their own labeledproducts selected from the best available onthe market today.

Theservice creates labelling, posters, POS, banners and even signage.

“This innovative idea is completely unique to Metro who offerretailers the benefit of over 25 years worth of flooring marketingexperience, on-site, combined with the practical ability to manufactureand install,” the group states.

and why we like it...Sharp style and clever use of colour - from their classic interpretationof houndstooth to the funky fun look of polka dots - allows a lot ofstylish creativity for those that want something more interesting on the floor.Brintons is a major userof British Wool andtheir website offersan immenseamount ofknowledgeon the fibre which iscentral to the storyof good quality woolcarpet. Take a look!

Selling Carpet in aModern World Times are changing - that is what the New Year is all about but as weknow, times have been changing for a while in carpets. Slowly ofcourse - that is the nature of the industry but it is quite obvious tothose of us who talk to editors and designers and retailers andmanufacturers, that consumers are becoming more specific about theproducts they choose. Personalization or identity consumerism is perhaps a natural off-shootof the influence of the internet and social media - endless productchoice and endless ways of acquiring product. This puts people in theunique position of sourcing exactly what they want - rather thanmerely what is on their local High Street. In ten years time the‘traditional’ consumer will be an online consumer.Carpet of course still tends to buck the trend and be bought in storewhere we, in the textile industry feel good advice still holds sway. Despite this fantastic somewhat old fashioned trend for buying face-to-face, the sometimes staid, reliable reputation of wool has neverbeen more under threat from what some may view as better value, aesthetically comparable fibres. However, part of the identity criteria that is creeping out of all thisonline choice is relatively basic - consumers still want good qualityand quality that lasts. Good appearance, wearability, cleanability, comfort, good design, colour authenticity - all of this can beconsidered estimations of quality. People buying online often receive goods to find that theirexpectations are not qualified in the flesh. Shade not as expected, fabric not suitable, poor manufacturing, unsuitable for use - often aretick boxes on the returns sheet. Modern consumers love free returns not least because they can exercise their right to say - not good enough. In the carpet sector - this is not our world - yet. Because at point ofsale we still have a relatively unthreatened comfort zone. We are inthe comparably unique position of mitigating against the unsatisfiedconsumer in advance by putting quality benefits alongside price pointadvantages. So that the consumer is aware of all assets - pros andcons and can evaluate the purchase, have it installed and then all iswell, hopefully. Replicating wool is an easy process today but like cheap make-up -the results are sometimes very short lived. All female consumersunderstand that analogy. In today’s fickle world, we should not short change that valuable face-to-face relationship, carpet is one of the few major purchasesthat people continue to step away from the sofa for - let us honourthat and be sure they fully understand the performance and the price. That simply involves explaining why something is a little moreexpensive. And whatever your choice of the multiple benefits of woolmay be while talking to your customer - and there are many - perhapsthe single differential against ‘imitation wool carpets’ is that theysimply lack lasting good appearance when compared to real wool. For today’s savvy consumer that usually ranks a ‘not good enough’.Real wool is strong and it looks better for longer...that’s whymanufacturers choose it.

A thought provoking look at trends, issues and happenings in the industry with a subtle wool twist of course!

“This year’s Domotex gotinternational trading off to asplendid start, and hasgenerated fresh momentum forthe carpets and floor coveringsindustry”

Domotex in Hannover, the world’s biggest flooring fair, providesan annual opportunity to look back at the UK market fromacross the channel and from a different perspective. So while a subdued start to 2015 in some sectors in the UK means that our flooring industry may not feel like one of the hotspots of European trade right now, a flat-lining Continental economy means that European manufacturers are turningenvious eyes on the UK as a rare oasis of growth.

This could be good news for UK retailers as suppliers try ever harder to capture alittle more of our valuable market share here with new ideas and attractive pricing.

The following pages (and some detailed Domotex reports to come in our Marchissue) capture many of the most interesting initiatives but here’s our synopsis of someof the current trends.

Soft is established as a super seller in carpets with key manufacturers investingheavily in the trend and Associated Weavers, whose iSense fibre took the market bystorm last summer, setting the pace again this year.

Fresh and light tones seek to lift the slightly gloomy European sentiment sowhites and white-washed, very pale pastels and the ‘Nordic’ bleached-out look are tobe seen across all types of flooring.

Stripes still dominate the market for patterns but saturation in the sector means thesmartest manufacturers have moved on and subtle patterns, texture patterns andclever yarn effects are now high on the product development list. ‘Vintage’ designsalso continue to do well and are showing across all flooring types – even carpet tiles!

Wool is emerging from its self-imposed exile more and more with a noticeableincrease in product development including innovative yarns and textures – and somedecent quality new 50/50 blends at a competitive price.

Natural tones apparently provide the comfort we are all looking for and undyed, neutral tones are in abundance. The ‘wood explosion’ is part of this trend but thegrowing propensity of carpet printers to mimic wood effects in textile is a dubiousby-product!

Concrete is the new grey. The concrete tones and textures now on offer in LVTand laminate tiles look almost industrial. Maybe we’re reaching a point whereconsumers will strip away the floorcovering, underlay and insulation to reveal theirhome’s actual construction material beneath!

Grass is growing. An inevitably punny headline but the UK is Europe’s biggest growthmarket for grass by far and the margins are exceptional. While the big players chasecontract work, there are opportunities for retailers to add a sales line to theirresidential offer.

See pages 52 to 56 for Part 1 of ourreview of the innovations at Domotex.Much more next month!

Domotex reinforced its credentials as the world’s top flooring event with 40,000 visitors over fourdays in January. Overseas visitors were up 12% though overall attendance figures were flat and thenumber of exhibitors fell slightly, including some notable British absences this year.

“Sentiment may be a little subdued in Europe right now but the inspiration and excitment generatedby over a thousand exhibitors at Domotex is genuinely uplifting,” says David Spragg of The Stocklists.“We always say that everyone whose business is flooring should visit the Hannover show at least onceto re-charge their enthusiasm for the industry. You won’t be disappointed. Book next year’s flight now!”

British visitors form the third biggest contingent of overseas attendees (after Turkey and India) andmany stayed two or three days to explore the 1,323 exhibitors from over 60 countries that fill 12 hallsin Hannover. The organiser’s emphasis on ‘innovation’ means that not only are the latest launches onoffer, but designers and product developers are encouraged to reveal what’s next in terms of style, trends, new materials and technology.

“This year’s Domotex got international trading off to a splendid start, and has generated freshmomentum for the carpets and floor coverings industry,” said Dr. Jochen Köckler of Domotex.

Cormar came up with a clever new concept at Domotex which was something of a surprise– and a very pleasant one judging by retailer reaction. As part of the Wools of New Zealandstand, Cormar revealed an unusual new wool loop, blended with 50% wool and 50%polyester to create a smart carpet with an excellent handle.

Bouclé Neutrals will be launched in February in six colours covering the on-trend beige andgrey natural tones with the clarity of colour that New Zealand wool is famous for. There aretwo designs plus a range of six, subtle coordinating stripes.

“This is a new quality for us and we have a really attractive product here at an affordable pricefor which we have had a fantastic reaction here at the show,” said Cormar’s David Judge.

Following the success of Connoiseur and last year’s sparkling Caviar & Champagne ranges, Ball and Young have decided to add a littlefrivolity to their posh underlay party with the launch of Charleston.

Charleston has the same specification as the popular Cloud 9Connoiseur but offers the product in 9 and 11mm depths. But withconsumers, it’s the printed white backing with strong Charleston imagery ofTwenties flappers and colourful rose designs that make it so distinctive.

“While we have fun working on these branding designs, we know it reallyworks for the retailer to give their sales that extra edge,” says Ann Shaw. “Itdoesn’t matter that the carpet is going to cover it up, first impressions countwith consumers and the retailer can use the design to interest the buyer inthe performance of the product.”

Asiatic Carpets made a welcome return to Domotex with a stunning standthat showed what they have been up to while they’ve been away. Newranges of super sophisticated rugs in up to-the-moment designs and coloursshow why Asiatic is held in high esteem by its customers for tracking thetrends that sell.

It’s difficult to call the highlights amongst the 240 new rugs that Asiatic rolled out for Domotex but the Katherine Carnaby range Chrome Stripeand Darcy options are the sort of designs that customers want withoutasking the price!

Another eye-catcher is the latest Chobi range of classic oriental design woolrugs. These are actually machine made but from hand spun yarns and handwashed so that only the price belies the fact the rug is not fully handknotted. But apart from the authentic feel, the soft faded pastel colour makethese highly desirable.

Carpet Craft Flooring in Redcar recently took delivery of a‘Carpet Crusher’ from Kenburn Waste Management in order tocompact their waste carpet for recycling and reduce skip costs.

Carpet Craft Flooring’s Managing Director Mark Lillekercommented: “We visited the Flooring Show at Harrogate inSeptember and on visiting the Kenburn stand we were intrigued bya large yellow carpet crushing machine.”

“It quickly became apparent that this machine would be absolutelyideal for reducing our skip costs which have risen dramatically overthe past few years. Kenburn informed us that with 30 tonnes ofcompaction force the carpet crusher would compact our carpetwaste on a 4:1 compaction ratio and we were delighted to discovertheir claims were 100% accurate. By using the carpet crusher all ourwaste polypropylene off cuts are recycled into equestrian flooringand all our old carpet waste mixed together with old underlay isconverted into refuse derived fuel (RDF) and used to power

He added: “As partof our commitmentto the environmentand our termswithin the MODcontract we hold,we’re nowoperating on a‘zero to landfill’policy which notonly preventshundreds oftonnes of wastecarpet andunderlay going tolandfill every year italso at the sametime saves usthousands ofpounds a year inskip costs so it’s a‘win-win’ scenario.’

His vision saw the firm evolve from a traditional weaver ofWilton and Axminster carpets to high quality contemporaryfloor coverings for domestic and commercial markets at homeand abroad.

Under his leadership, Brockway was soon to establish itself as aforward thinking company in the carpet industry, and became apioneer of tufted carpet within the UK.

Roy’s son and chairman Charles Annable said: “Whilst I will misshim enormously it is a great consolation to know that he led afull and in many ways remarkable life. He continued to enjoy lifeat Brockway until the relatively recent past, despite some majorsetbacks to his health over the last 13 years, which was a greatcredit to his determination and indefatigable spirit.

For everyone who met Roy he was a true gentleman with astrength of personality which inspired all who knew him - family, friends and work colleagues.

Charles added: “He believed strongly in British craftsmanshipand was proud to manufacture beautiful, high quality productsin our own factory in the traditional market town ofKidderminster.

“We are so proud of his vision and achievements, transformingBrockway into the market leading UK brand which is recognisedinternationally today. He will be greatly missed by us all.”

Obituary:Roy AnnableStevens & Graham, the world's biggest tartan carpet designer and

manufacturer, has brought a splash of contemporary colour to two ofScotland's best-loved hotels as part of a series of new contract wins.

The Glasgow-based company, which supplies carpets to international namessuch as Brooks Brothers, Tommy Hilfiger and House of Fraser, was called on bythe Dumbuck House Hotel at the gateway to Dumbarton and Strathblane'sever-popular Kirkhouse Inn to provide stunning new carpets throughout theirpublic areas.

Both hotels ordered up to 500 square metres of Stevens & Graham's Scottish-designed and craftsman-woven floor coverings at a cost of up to£60,000 give their establishments a unique new look.

Stevens & Graham managing director John McIlvogue, who acquired thecompany last year, said: “The carpets they have chosen were designed from first principles by our design team at Jessie Street in Glasgow's Polmadie andcreated to our specifications by UK craft weavers who are at the top of their profession.”

The Dumbuck House Hotel, an 18th century mansion house close toHelensburgh's elegant promenades and the splendours of the Loch Lomondand the Trossachs National Park, has just undergone a comprehensiverefurbishment. As part of its dramatic style statement, it commissioned a tartanfrom Stevens & Graham based on Farrow & Ball paint colours, creating a tartanof pinks and greys in a unique, contemporary and design-led pattern. It featuresin the reception, hallways and function hall areas.

The Kirkhouse Inn, which was built in 1601 and has a rich and varied history inthe parish of Strathblane, just outside Glasgow, has also benefited from majorrefurbishments in recent times.

The owners of the landmark building, close to the famous Glengoyne whiskydistillery, chose a more traditional Scottish theme based on Stevens &Graham's Heather Green, one of its unsurpassable range of 136 tartans.

Stevens & Graham, which was founded in 1947, has recently created up toeight new jobs with the opening this summer of its exclusive Chelsea Harbour-style showroom in the heart of Glasgow.

It has also signed an exclusive distribution agreement worth up to $1 million ayear with US-based business Stark, the $500 million turnover New York-headquartered carpet, fabric and wallcoverings business.

Mr McIlvogue said: "Sales of this kind in the UK are a great shop window forour products. These hotels are associated in the public mind with quality andstyle and seeing our carpets in positions of prominence there will reinforce that message."

With the well-established Master Installer scheme shaping the future ofthe industry through manufacturer-backed warranties on workmanship, the Academy is considered the benchmark in training for the flooringindustry. “Whether through our foundation courses, the Master Installer concept, or a bespoke programme, making the effort to undergo training now will givebenefits long into the future,” says Lee Thompson, procurement and technical manager. “Proof lies in Master Installers that have reported an upturn inwork and retailers that have claimed the extra product knowledge has helped sales and customer interaction.”

Now in its third year, Forbo Flooring’s Back tothe Floor take back scheme offers a genuineclosed-loop recycling solution for Forboflooring installation off-cuts. Rising volumes ofmaterial that go back into new products arecontributing to the transition towards aCircular Economy in the flooring sector.

The scheme has expanded greatly in its secondyear with the volume of flooring off-cutscollected rising to three times the amountcollected in 2013. Back to the Floor Scheme Co-ordinator, Michelle Brewer said: “With morecollectors coming on board amid growing awareness of how the scheme can assist flooringprofessionals with their recycling activities, we have seen tonnages increase dramatically in the past12 months.”

Forbo off-cuts, as well as cushioned vinyl flooring off-cuts from most manufacturers, are collectedacross the UK and recycled back into new flooring products across the company’s portfolio.

The scheme offers both environmental and economic benefits for participants through diversionof waste material from landfill and preservation of raw material resources for use in newproducts. Flooring contractors can benefit from savings on disposal costs versus sending theirwaste flooring material to landfill.

As an established BTTF collector, Oxbridge Carpets Ltd has already sent back six collections oftwo bulk bags since signing up to the scheme over a year ago. “Without a doubt it has saved uson disposal costs,” commented John Webb, Oxbridge’s Warehouse Manager. “It’s important torecycle where we can, so we see the scheme as a positive thing. All our fitters are given polythenebags for the off-cuts which are then bulked up at our site prior to collection.”

All Back to the Floor scheme members are provided with colour-coded polythene bags and bulkbags free of charge, which are collected directly from site or a contractor’s premises.

Forbo has invested significantly in the recycling processes at three of its UK sites where material isrecycled back into new products. Tessera off-cuts are processed at the Bamber Bridge plant nearPreston, while the Flotex and vinyl flooring goes back into flooring at the Ripley site.

At Forbo’s plant in Kirkcaldy, Marmoleum off-cuts are shredded into very fine pieces that are usedin new Marmoleum production.
