TUFTED

With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpetproduced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll ofcarpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primarybacking fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and asecondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.

LOOP PILEBerber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effectunderfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours andmay be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.

Level loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highlyflexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casualappearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blendbetween luxury and practicality.

Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loopheights to create informal, random textures which are very forgivingfor marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areasand busy family rooms.

CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebblytexture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust anddirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.

Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which shouldbe heat set. The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending togetherto form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints andvacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home.More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.

Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn istightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result isa versatile, textured finish that is ideal for plain colours.

Velvet • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have alevel surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is thensheared to give a smooth finish. With very little twist in the yarn, the

WOVEN

Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but

still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for

prestigious installations.

Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backingas it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a

velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of

high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel.

The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used –

although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned

axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.

Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to

axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre

is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create

a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality

carpet of unrivalled durability.

Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave

is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider

area to created a flatter, more textured effect.

ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easilyand the colour looks different from place to place because fibreslying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury foroccasional rooms.

CUT AND LOOPWhen some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety ofsurface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety ofcolours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints andstains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and generalpurpose rooms in the home.

Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surfaceflattens easily and lacks durability.

BONDEDBonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’)are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres arenot stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principallyused for commercial carpet tiles.

Flooring factsheetCarpet care guide from WOOLSAFE

Entrance or walk-off matsThe use of entrance mats at all outside entrances tothe house is highly recommended, as they willsignificantly reduce the rate at which the carpet willsoil. They should be of adequate size to allow streetdirt to be removed from shoe soles and must becleaned regularly themselves.

Regular MaintenanceRegular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet andmaintain its appearance. Vacuum clean regularly andthoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that candamage the fibres.

Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.

Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not havethe WOOLSAFE Mark, it is not endorsed by most carpetmanufacturers!

Never use any detergents such as dishwashingliquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended forgeneral household use. Although they may clean thecarpet satisfactorily they will almost certainly causeproblems such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding orother damage to the pile or backing of the carpet.

Use only WOOLSAFE approved products

How to decide whether to join a buying group –and which one…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently

• Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a memberof the committee

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the nextnearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, anyfees that would relate to your membership, how thebills are paid and whether your fees are refundable ifit doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for aconsultation to estimate your potential savings

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see whatyou would actually use

• Check out the product ranges offered including theown-label options and the UK/European mix

• Ensure you understand any rules that may limit yourflexibility to run your business the way you want

Why join?Buying groups have been a highly successful feature ofthe floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, givingindependents the extra edge they need to competeeffectively with the retail park chains.

More than 1000 retailers are now members of one ofthe several buying groups which operate in our sectorand the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident,the resistance to the buying group concept among non-members appears to be centred on fears ofsurrendering some control to a committee – and mostparticularly compromising long-established relationshipsand negotiated terms with current suppliers.

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer sellingacross a broad range of products is likely to improvemargins within a buying group – but you don’t need aleap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefitsIncrease margins

• Group purchases to get beneficial rates

• Rebates

• Exclusive higher-margin products

• Special promotions

One of the key reasons to join a buying group is tobenefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulkbuyer from manufacturers. The way discounts andrebates are passed on to members varies betweengroups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will bedone. You’ll need to work out how this compares withdiscounts you have already negotiated locally withpreferred suppliers.

Increase sales

• ‘Best of both worlds’ proposition

•Wider ranges and exclusive products

• POS, displays and merchandising support

Your customers will like the proposition that you areindependent but with the buying power of a group –this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ withpersonal service and competitive pricing. Most groupswill also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support withpoint-of-sale, merchandising and displays. Centralstockholding may also be on offer.

Access professional services

• Business services

• Financial services

• IT and internet support

•Training and workshops

• Professional bodies

Some buying groups offer an excellent range of otherservices which may be valuable to your business.Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loansand insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groupsoffering marketing packages, software systems to helpyou run your business operations and customisedwebsites ready to use. Relationships with professionaland training organisations can also offer discounts.

Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferredmanufacturers

• Regular meetings

• Regional workshops

• Supplier presentations

• Helpline

A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment ofbeing independent but not alone out there on the HighStreet. Groups hold regular meetings and some havetheir own trade shows, regional meetings andworkshops to help you develop your business. Thenetwork gives you someone to call when you needadvice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technicalconsumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet

Good underlay will...• Improve underfoot comfort• Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening• Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear• Improve thermal insulation and warmth• Increase sound insulation• Smooth out sub-floor imperfections• Last the lifetime of the carpet

Poor or old underlay will...• Feel hard and unwelcoming• Reduce carpet life• Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots• Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly• Not meet British Standards

How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working withgripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavytraffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combinationof thickness and density is all important as a thickunderlay with low density may not perform well.Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it willneed to be – 11mm is often used for luxury installationswith 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet andlaminate flooring offers retailers one of the bestopportunities to add value to every sale – with goodprofitability, trade-up potential once benefits areunderstood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that newunderlay is always required, the only decision is whichtype. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers canwalk on samples with different grades of underlay andfeel the difference has shown excellent results – somemanufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

Underlay

Sponge rubberThe market’s most popular underlay is available in flat orwaffle patterns in a wide range of weights for differentapplications. It performs well for comfort and has adurable spring retention.

PU (polyurethane) foamPU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typicallymade from recycled foam offcuts. The foam providesexcellent comfort and performance levels with lots ofthickness options and densities – and its light weight helpshandling. The product can be re-cycled again after use.

Crumb rubberFlat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort(and very good over stair nosings).

Laminate underlayThere’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminateflooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floorand helping the boards float above any imperfections inthe sub-surface.

CombinationA rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a goodcombination of protection, durability and comfort. It alsoallows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

Underfloor heating underlayAlways ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturersoffer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with acombined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used – which meansthe underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

FeltThis traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay ismade from recycled fibres – wool, jute and synthetic – tocreate a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation.Still a very popular choice among contractors whenstretch fitting woven carpets.

Pre-tackified underlayA self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefeltand PU. A removable system for heavy use whencomfort is desired.

COLOUR MATCHINGCarpets are produced in batches - known ascreels - and usually each batch produces between500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending onthe creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyerremains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colourreproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to theoriginal or master sample to ensure that thecolour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.

This process if not an exact science and acommercial tolerance is subjective butnevertheless is usually the professional judgementof the head dyer based on his/her experience.

A greater level of tolerance is required onblended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfectcolour matching it is advisable that a single widthbe used in any installation requiring exact colourmatching.

N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travellingin different directions, even though they be fromthe same batch will appear not to match.

For further information please check with themanufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLESThe samples held by individual retailers may notbe from the same batch as current productionand therefore should be used as a guide and notan exact colour match.

SHEDDINGAll cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which iscreated during production when spun yarn is cutfor tuft formation. These fibres fall onto thesurface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff ’.

The effect varies with yarn type and may beremoved without detrimental effect upon thecarpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre isonly a small fraction of the total fibre contained inthe carpet.

PULLED LOOPSPulled loops occur only in looped pile carpetwhere one or more loops in the continuous pileis pulled through the primary backing of thecarpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in aloop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loopsare easily dealt with by trimming the offendingend level with the rest of the pile. They should notbe left as this could result in further loops beingpulled and developing into a ladder.

SPROUTINGOccasionally an odd tuft or two can work its wayto the surface and stand proud of the rest of thepile. This is probably due to one end of the tuftbeing longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuftinstead of V shaped. Remedial action merelyrequires that the offending tufts be scissortrimmed level with the rest of the pile. Theyshould never be pulled out.

SHADINGShading occurs because the pile of the carpet hasbecome crushed, flattened or brushed in adifferent direction to the natural lie of the pilewhilst in situ. This causes light reflection atdiffering angles resulting in the creation of lightand dark patches on the carpet. This will occur onall pile fabrics but can be more noticeable onplainer carpets because the shadows created bypile pressure will not be disguised by a heavypattern or design.

STATICCarpets do not produce static but like otherhousehold fabrics and objects have the capacity tostore it. Static is caused by the build up of staticelectricity upon personnel in a dry environmentand is discharged when a person makes contactwith an object which can conduct electricity (i.e.door handle or filing cabinets, etc).

The static charges will vary in intensity dependingupon the individual, air humidity and the contactmaterials. Static is more usually associated withsynthetic materials as they do not retain moisturevery well but it can and does occur with wool invery dry room conditions.

Preventative measures include the introduction ofmoisture into the room or in situ carpettreatment.

FADING ON WOOLCarpets made from wool can and do fade in use.The degree of fade can vary depending on thecolour chosen and the local conditions to whichthe carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violetlight which is found in daylight, but is acceleratedwhen sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. Thishas the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” thecolour just as exposure to sunlight will lightenhuman hair. Wool is after all animal hair.

Protection should be given to carpets exposed tosuch conditions just as you would protect otherfurniture or fabrics.

A complaint on fading would be consideredjustified if it failed to meet the required shadestandard when tested to the British StandardBS1006 (1990).

PILE REVERSAL(SEE SHADING)

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap ofthe carpet changes direction and thus reflects lightat different angles showing the effects of shadingwhich can become permanent. It is also describedas ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpetconstruction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, HandWoven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even CoirMatting. Like shading it can be more apparent onplain carpet because heavy patterns can disguisethe effects. It can occur quite quickly afterinstallation. A tremendous amount of research hasbeen carried out over many years by manyinstitutes to determine the cause of thisphenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturingprocess which can cause or cure this phenomenonand therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. Forfurther information please check with individualmanufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONSWhen a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it isunreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent.Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longerwill be the time for the pile to recover. In the caseof very heavy loads in place for a considerabletime, the recovery time can be very considerable.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pileof the carpet that becomes indented. the underlaywill also indent and the backing of the carpet mayalso distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some lesswell depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.

The use of cups below furniture legs can spreadthe load and the net result is a larger area of lessdeeply indented carpet.

The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavystatic load can be measured in the laboratory, usingthe test method described in BS 4939 and manymanufacturers will have data on this aspect ofcarpet performance. In this test the carpet isloaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery ismeasured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since thereare so many different underlay’s however, it is veryrare for the recovery from a heavy static load tobe evaluated on carpet and underlay.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning witha rotating brush machine) will speed up recoverybut in the case of serious indentations the use ofan iron and damp cloth or a steam iron togetherwith a blunt darning needle to carefully tease upthe pile can be beneficial. Care must be take notto over wet the carpet, of course.

FLATTENINGFlattening will occur as a result of traffic whicheventually flattens the pile particularly in the mainareas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greateror lesser degree dependant on the amount oftraffic to which it is subjected and the construction(tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of theproduct concerned.

SOILINGSoiling is usually the result of some local conditionto which the carpet has been subjected to, ormaintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do toprevent soiling in use. There are several types ofsoiling which are quite common:

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials orany drink which contains sugar, particularly hotdrinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave stickysoap residues in the fibres which can result in thesoiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soilcarpets in various ways, apart from the obvioussoiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggestairborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fittedfloorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboardscan be seen quite clearly. Air borne dustsometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, thisis due to the air carried on a draught under thecarpet escaping through minute holes both in theunderlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited onthe pile much like a filter action. In suchinstallations, the use of a lining paper is essential asa preventative measure.

It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise theconsumer when the carpet is measured of anypoorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards andthe consumers responsibility to ensure anyremedial work to seal draughts, is carried outbefore the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaintis to be avoided.

THE BEST CARPET WOOL

Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as afibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellentappearance retention properties. The best wool for carpetproduction is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds foundin Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both BritishWool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulkyand resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades tocarpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter andparticularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the twowithin a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfectqualities for carpet.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool richWool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superiorstrength and does not need other fibres to improve itsperformance. However manufacturers choose to use synthetic fibreswithin the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These include fibreflexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability and cost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpets whichwill perform well in the home.

THE BENEFITS OF WOOL CARPET

PracticalStrong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performanceover many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lastingdurability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so thatpile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading arereduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soilingdue to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as aresult additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuumingthe carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbentcloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

ComfortSoft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort andwarmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retentionand energy efficiency.

Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the homeagainst echo and room to room noise transfer.

SafetyFire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rateand tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets manysafety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured incontract locations for this reason.

Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor whichprotects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal EnvironmentIndoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physicaland chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere inthe home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it whenthe atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbingairborne toxins in indoor air.

Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dustuntil vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in theatmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote thegrowth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool isboth 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part ofanimal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply ofwool available for the carpet manufacturing industry.

Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpetproduction.

Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will producenitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients.

Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibrethat has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life CycleAnalysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard forBritish Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measuredagainst man-made fibres.

IT’S TIME TO SHOW OFF THE NYLONS!Most of you might think of us as a supplier of middle to high end loop pile carpets inwool and wool mixes, but since Edel and Telenzo came together as part of the EdelGroup, we’ve also been producing some fabulous nylon qualities as well – so much so,we’ve just put together a special product and price list focussing specifically on ourpolyamide and Edelon ranges and we’re supplying on demand 45x 45cm wall samples(ask your agent for more details). All these qualities are now available in cut lengths aswell as rolls.

Some of these products are already doing really well – Wild Romance and Verdi, specifically. We’ve high hopes for the gorgeous Amore – which, says our own Lesley Inman “is likewalking on silk!” – and also Gloss and the new Malta. Plus, we’ll be introducing anothernew nylon product in the summer, which promises to be “totally different”.

With a pile weight of 2000gsm, Amore is a really luxuriantly thick deep cut pile qualitybut being made from high grade polyamide 6.6 yarn – the very best you can buy – it’salso fantastically resilient! Says Lesley, who has Amore in her living room: “When Imoved an extremely heavy bookcase to vacuum after about six months, the carpetbounced back in place with just the touch of my hand – amazing!” It’s Scotchgarded,Action back, 4m wide only and available in six colours – Parchment, Seal, Ash,Expresso, Quicksilver and Ink.

Gloss is a heavy duty 1/10th gaugelevel loop pile quality. Pile height isjust 3.7mm but as the namesuggests this is a beautiful, highlustre yarn, which looks so superbit’s available in 18 rich colours -some samples are shown above.

Super soft Wild Romance is a slightly lighter weight option – at 1440 gsm pile weight– and consequently comes in both four and five metre widths and a broader colourbank of 15 shades.

Verdi is a luscious, luxurious 3/8th gauge twist with a 36mm pile height and a lustrousshine but also very hard wearing. It comesin 12 great colours – Alabaster, Ash,Chartreuse, Silver, Turquoise, Framboise,Hot Pepper, Otter, Graphite, Chocolate,Aubergine and Black.

Verdi

Wild Romance

Look out also for another new product,Malta, another cut pile option but with avery fine gauge, almost frisee construction. It has a beautiful colour bank of 11 shades.

Managing Director Andrew Broughton said: "We have specialisedin producing made to measure carpets for 30 years now and atthe better end of the market there is still strong demand forquality carpets with no joins. We can manufacture carpets to thesize and shape of the room, in one piece, with no joins and verylittle waste. We are proud to be one of the very few genuinecustom made manufacturers left in the UK."

Victoria Carpets offers both residential and contract sectors a choiceof either tufted or wilton bespoke carpets and plans to introduce adedicated contract sales team. One difficulty to overcome is thatretailers and contractors believe that they need to order largequantities for a custom carpet, which is not the case, the company states.

For example, in a tufted graphics design, produced in up to 10colours and up to 4m wide, it only needs orders of 300 sq m. Forits Jacquard Brussels Wilton, the company offers a wide choice ofwidths and styles and orders of as little as 50 sq m.

Richard Meager, Jacaranda Carpets Managing Director, sayscompany growth is due to the flexibility, advice and supportprovided. "On the carpet side we can colour match Jacaranda'sHeavy Velvet broadloom, but it is on our bespoke rug businessthat growth is greatest. We have loyal retail and interior designcustomers who regularly use Jacaranda's Himalayan hand-knottingservice to make rugs to their own unique designs, others whoalter or re-colour Jacaranda designs to suit particular projects.”

Hand-woven rugs in natural tones and textures are offered, withcustomers also choosing broadloom textures for use in rugs, whichcan be hand-finished in India, or cut to size and bordered in Britain.

While all retailers know the benefit of having a diverseselection of stock to appeal to all customers and budgets, the ability to provide bespoke carpet can allow them tomove into new areas and provide customers with trulyunique product.

Technology is playing its part in this, with Axminister Carpets’online Carpet Design facility illustrating the point, aimed at smallhospitality and business owners seeking to create their ownflooring. Richard Lawrence, Axminster Group Head of Marketing, says: “The facility guides you through the design process, fromselecting the pattern, creating your own colourway from a paletteof 32 colours and then visualising how your carpet would look ina variety of 3D roomsets. From just 100m2, business owners, oreven home owners, can create a beautiful semi-bespoke axminsterwoven carpet that perfectly matches to their interior, or that setsthe scene for future refurbishment.

“Whether classical, contemporary, floral or geometric designs, businesses can find an ideal pattern and recolour it so that theeffect can either be subtle or bold.” Mr Lawrence states that whilesemi-bespoke is becoming more popular, the process can be timeconsuming. “We appreciated that many small business owners hadneither the time nor inclination during the day and so we madethe process more accessible by turning it into an online tool thatcan be used easily, anytime and with great results,” he says.

Experience is obviously essential in this area and Brontë Carpetsrefers to its 30 years of producing high quality, custom carpet in plain100% wool and plain 80/20 wool/nylon, also specialising in handcrafted inlaid and carved borders. Every order is custom made tothe colour and size of the room and any colour can be specified viaBronte's special dye service, with carpets supplied to any width, froma stair runner up to 12m wide with no joins. It also offers a made toplan service, including ‘L’ and ‘T’ shapes to further reduce wastage.

"We have just opened a new showroom in The DesignCentre Chelsea Harbour, to satisfy customer demand for adestination where they can view and receive advice on thebespoke opportunities offered by Jacaranda Carpets," saysMr Meager.

Long experience is also utilised by Cavalier Carpets, withcustom carpet production supplied to clients around theworld, from private houses to cruise liners. Service, qualityand timescales are all paramount and all the ‘i’s have to bedotted and ‘t’s crossed before embarking on customprojects. “Any small issue at the outset can become a hugeproblem further down the line. There is no quick fix foranything in contract. One order won, is just that! AtCavalier we focus on the long term, wanting the customerof that one order to become a returning customer in thefuture,” says Hans Lowe, Cavalier Sales Director.

“The key to a custom production department is a long termstrategy. Contract work will always bring peaks and troughsto production, the skill is to smooth them out as much aspossible. The 'four corners of the globe', need to besmoothed round as much as possible,” he says.

Abby Chandler, Heckmondwike Marketing Manager, says: “Intoday’s competitive marketplace, specifiers are constantly lookingfor ways to differentiate their projects and custom flooring is aneye-catching and effective way of creating an individual ‘stamp’.End users too are increasingly asking for bespoke carpet designs –whether that’s to create a bright and creative learningenvironment in a school, for example, or to maintain a strongsense of brand identity for a corporate client.

“Fibre bonded carpet presents an ideal opportunity for custominstallations, as the robust construction enables a wide variety ofcolours to be cut and laid together to create intricate designs, withno danger of fraying. This is also a popular choice for entranceareas and a growing number of organisations are choosing toincorporate a logo or other bespoke design into their entranceflooring, to really emphasise branding messages from the moment avisitor sets foot in the building,” Ms Chandler concludes.

Signature Carpets, currently celebrating 30 years in the supply ofbespoke, hand-tufted rugs and carpets, has seen increased demandfor individuality and says subtlety does not have to be sacrificed.

“Careful use of colour and design to reflect interior designstatements is one emerging alternative to high impact statements ofpersonality,” says Stephen Garrod, Managing Director. “Drama in deepcolours is now more likely to be reserved to simple lines or solidexpanses where they add warmth to an overall relaxed landscape.”Textural pattern is now common to provide an unobtusivebackground to a room’s décor, he states. With its design andmanufacture based in the UK, the company works with interiordesigners and flooring retailers who appreciate that expert personnel,in tune with their needs and close at hand, will deliver the client’sdream carpet with no compromises or complications, says Mr Garrod.

Always considered the premier event of the home design calendar,it is packed with all the latest looks and improvements for yourhome and garden. “I wanted to show how wool is a very flexible fibre and can beused in many different ways. “There is a huge amount of interest in all types of wool productat the moment, so I felt a combination stand at this show wouldbe a perfect opportunity to promote the skills and superiorstandards of our British Wool industry. You find when you spendtime talking to people on trade stands, that the wool carpetconsumer is the person who will also be interested in the clothsand the furnishings too,” said Richard.

Brand leadershipNew survey shows Tredaire and Duralay are at least four times morepopular than competitor brands.

A new market survey has shown that Interfloor’s leading underlay brands,Tredaire and Duralay, are still the most popular with consumers – and by along way. The survey was carried out by an independent marketingservices company (dR) in November 2011. The internet survey asked 1,051consumers whether they had bought a new underlay with their carpet andwhich brands, of all the leading players in the market, they recognised.

Steve Woodhead, marketing director at Interfloor, commented on theresults. “Periodically we like to check on the consumer’s perception ofunderlay brands, including ours. It’s important that the consumerrecognises and trusts leading brands and that, in turn, helps the retailersell branded products with confidence. We’re encouraged that Tredaireand Duralay are maintaining their popularity with consumers but westill have work to do to raise interest in the category so that morepeople choose to buy a branded underlay with their new carpet.”

In terms of brand awareness Duralay came first with 31%, Tredaire wassecond with 27%, followed by Cloud 9 at 7%, Carpenter at 5% andHyper at 3%. The survey also found that 49% of consumers hadbought a new underlay with their carpet. “The results are similar to theprevious survey. I was quite surprised to find that 49% of consumerssaid that they had bought an underlay with their carpet. This is exactlythe same as a survey we did before the recession and it suggests thatretailers have been very effective at retaining underlay volumes despitevery challenging market conditions,” says Woodhead.

“We need to ensure that interest in the leading underlay brands, likeTredaire and Duralay, is nurtured. They increase customer satisfactionand re-purchase through the retailer, and this improves retailer margins. To support this we will improve and extend our range of brandedpoint of sale to assist the retailer in selling our brands. Our sales teamwork with our customers to find the best product solutions and wehave seen an encouraging increase in the sales of branded underlayssuch as Tredaire Softwalk and Dreamwalk, and Duralay Treadmore andTimbermate Excel.”

The survey also indicated that the consumers who were most likely tobuy underlay were those aged over 50. This suggests thatmanufacturers may need to adopt different strategies to communicatethe message to younger consumers. “We’re always looking for betterways to communicate the underlay benefits in store but we’re alsothinking about how this should be done in the digital age when asignificant number of consumers use the internet to gather informationabout potential purchases.”

The proportion of consumers purchasing underlay has remained at49% and therefore there is a significant opportunity for some retailersto improve their profits by getting a few more of their customers tobuy a new underlay with their carpet. Steve Woodhead says, “If a retailstore has 49% of their carpet customers buying underlay thenpersuading just 5 of the 51 in a 100 who don’t buy underlay, willincrease sales and profits by 10%. We are very keen to work with ourretail customers and help them to be more successful in doing this.Challenging market conditions are likely to be with us for a while yetso anything like this that helps to improve sales and profits is worthtaking very seriously”

Leading UK manufacturer, Cormar Carpets, has achieved its goal to have ‘zero waste to landfill’ at itsBrookhouse Mill and Holme Mill manufacturing sites.

Nationally 400,000 tonnes of carpet waste is buried in UK landfill every year and with the German and Dutchgovernments recently banning carpet waste from landfill altogether, it’s likely that the UK government willfollow in their footsteps. To counter the threat, Cormar Carpets has been working with Carpet Recycling UK(CRUK) to reduce post-consumer waste to landfill nationally, as well as eliminating manufacturing waste goingto landfill locally, at its own two mills in Lancashire. Over the last three years Cormar has worked to ensure: a50% overall reduction in production waste at both sites, including edge trims and joins.

The company has also acheived a 90% reduction in carpet fault waste produced during manufacturing and100% re-use or recycling of cardboard, plastic and metal tubes. The most recently completed project was abaling press installed at Cormar’s Brookhouse Mill site. It compacts the backing plant waste carpet ‘edge trim’and ‘sewings’ ready for collection by a third party.

To date CRUK has reduced the amount of carpet going to landfill by 10% in just two years. It has also helped divert 137,020 tonnes of carpet waste fromlandfill to recycling or energy recovery (equivalent to 8472 football pitches). And it has expanded its affiliated carpet re-use, recycling and energy recoveryoutlets from six to 24. CRUK has also provided a lead role on carpets within the Flooring Resource Efficiency Plan funded by WRAP and BRE Trust.

Following implementation of Cormar’s 3Rs initiative (Reduce, Re-use and Recycle) two years ago, Cormar has now turned its aims into reality. “We don’t planto stop here. We have several ongoing projects with further capital investment in new technology planned. The aim is to enable Cormar to stay well ahead ofthe fast changing landscape of environmental responsibilities for UK companies.,” said finance director Robert Barker.

Record waste performance

Recofloor continues to break waste vinyl flooringrecycling records with 447 tonnes collected in 2011. Thisfigure is evenly split between smooth offcuts (34%), safetyoffcuts (33%) and smooth uplifted vinyl (33%) and is wellover double the 189 tonnes recovered in 2010.

Ease of use and increased awareness, along withregulatory and legislative drivers are all factors that havecontributed to Recofloor’s tremendous success, accordingto Jane Gardner, of resource recovery specialists AxionConsulting, which manages the scheme.

“Recofloor’s straightforward, cost-effective and efficientcollection system has diverted a total of 700 tonnes ofwaste vinyl flooring from landfill since it was launched in2009,” says Jane. “This benefits the environment, reducesmembers’ waste disposal costs and recycles material backinto products, such as new flooring.”

Calculations by Axion show by capturing and recycling700 tonnes of smooth and safety flooring vinyl – inpreference to using virgin material in new products -Recofloor has produced a net reduction of 0.56 millionkilos of CO2 emissions. This equates to driving an averagefamily petrol car 1.6 million miles (nearly 67 times roundthe equator) or taking 138 cars off the road for a year.

Recofloor’s website ‘cost calculator’ is a popular featurewith members who can calculate their cost-savings byrecycling vinyl flooring waste, as opposed to landfilling it.Collectors also gain green credentials which helps themwin more business.

Recycling success

Recofloor, the UK’s vinyl flooring take-back scheme, will be recognising itsvinyl flooring recycling champions at a sustainability seminar and awards eventat The Building Research Establishment Innovation Park (BRE) at Watford onApril 18th.

Entitled ‘Recofloor – Closing the Loop’, the day will feature key speakers from theflooring industry and explain how the scheme, founded by leading flooringmanufacturers Altro and Polyflor, works with the supply chain to divert vinylflooring waste from landfill.

Material is recycled back into products, including new flooring, which benefits theenvironment and significantly reduces collectors’ waste disposal costs.

Spearheading the morning seminar session is Dr Jason Leadbitter, Sustainability &Compliance Manager at INEOS ChlorVinyls who will be exploring keysustainability credentials of PVC for use in the construction sector. Other guestspeakers include Richard Catt, Chief Executive Officer at the Contract FlooringAssociation, Stuart Blofeld, developer of the BRE’s Smartwaste Scheme, alongwith WRAP and Recofloor representatives.

“As well as celebrating our achievements, it will be an excellent opportunity toshare expert knowledge, learn more about how Recofloor can work for yourbusiness and meet fellow industry professionals,” explains Jane Gardner, ofresource recovery specialists Axion Consulting, which manages the scheme.

Recofloor, which became a Limited Company in 2011, has grown to 437members across the supply chain, from waste transfer stations to flooringcontractors and distributors. Jane hopes the event will boost membership evenfurther, saying: “Increased awareness of the scheme’s benefits helped to attract192 new flooring contractors and nine further drop-off sites last year.”

Recofloor will also host its second awards ceremony, which recognises thecommitment and achievements of Recofloor collectors throughout the UK.

Chris MoffatExecutive Chairman, SMG

Voice of the Trade

“ “What’s the biggest single advantage of being in a buying group? The obvious answer to this question is the discounts, rebates andpreferential prices that Buying Group members enjoy. However, thereal advantage becomes evident when you consider that these benefitsare ‘permanent’ and not only available to retailers when economictimes become challenging for suppliers.

How different are the various buying groups from one another? The overall aim of the various Buying Groups is the same in my view...to help the independent retailer to be competitive throughout thepurchasing process. The main difference is centred on how each grouppresents its product offering, whether it be primarily the promotion of‘own brand’ or the manufacturers brand. Individual group philosophyalso has to be taken into consideration depending on whether aBritish or a Global sourced product portfolio preference has beenselected and adopted.

Are retailers right to worry about losing their independence? No, because it is not in the interest of any Buying Group to diminishor take away the retailers biggest asset... their independence.

Are you surprised how many retailers are not members of groups?Yes, but I think that this has a lot to do with the perception that theymay lose their independence. To help alleviate their fears, I wouldsuggest that any retailer considering membership should check out theBuying Group ‘Factsheet’ page that is published in every issue of The Stocklists.

Overall, what proportion of the retail trade do you thinkshould be members?Simple!... All forward thinking, professional, image conscious, creditworthy independents who are preferably Carpet Foundation retailmembers employing Flooring Guild trained staff, trading from bona fideretail premises, having adopted the OFT recognised Code of Practiceand equally possessing a passion for supporting the Britishmanufacturing sector, should be members of SMG... but I have alwaysbeen an idealist albeit, realistic and a little biased towards theorganisation I represent!

Are there any types of flooring retailer that are not suitablefor membership (e.g. too specialist, too small)?I have always considered that size does not come into the equationand as long as they are credit worthy, operate from bone fide retailpremises and have the appropriate professional attitude, they arewelcome. Sole online traders, individuals trading from home and vans, multiples, wholesale distributors and fitters do not qualify.

Is there a lack of understanding of how buying groups workgenerally in the flooring industry?Buying Groups have been in existence for almost half a century, so Ithink that there is generally a very good understanding of how weoperate as a sector. The Groups do differ in how they operate and it isup to the individual retailer to decide which Group suits theirrequirements.

Apart from the price discounts/margin advantages, what doyou think retailers value most about buying groups. There are two things mainly in my view... a) Retail members enjoy thebenefit of receiving regular information about new products, trends, industry initiatives and activities that may not otherwise be readilyavailable to them outside the Group network system, and b) They arepart of a collective network of likeminded professional retailers withwhom they can seek advice or share experiences.

Do manufacturers regard buying groups as a force for goodor a necessary evil?I like to think that most manufacturers view us favourably as long asthey continue to reap the benefit of achieving additional sales backedup with constant promotional and PR support.

Can groups get in the way of long-established supplierrelationships? There is no reason why they should because most Buying Groupsmaintain a policy of allowing and encouraging their retailers to buildcloser working relationships with their ‘approved’ suppliers, whichinevitably leads to growth for both parties.

Is buying group membership growing quickly enough? We are in no hurry at SMG... we just want good professionalindependent retailers to seriously consider what we have on offer andthe additional benefits that we are confident they will enjoy throughmembership. We prefer ‘quality’ of retailer rather than play thequantity game and I am sure all Buying Groups and their Suppliersshare this view.

Has the recession had an influence on membership? We at SMG, feel fortunate that we have not seen any significantdecline in membership during the current recession and membershipenquiries are still forthcoming on a daily basis. Unfortunately, proprietor retirements and lease renewals have led to some storeclosures during the current economic climate and this is one of themain reasons why we need to maintain constant recruitment activity.Furthermore, the recession has influenced some retailers into adoptinga culture of ‘trading down’ in a desperate attempt to secure ordersfrom a diminished level of foot-fall which has inevitably, and sadly, putpressure on the quality end of the manufacturing sector.

“Buying Groups have been inexistence for almost half a century, so I think that there is generally avery good understanding of how we operate as a sector.”

Stand and deliverManufacturers compete for a piece of your sales floor

ONDISPLAY2 0 1 2

There’s an “arms race’ in point-of-sale and manufacturers are wheeling out their big guns to win the battle of thehigh street to get the attention of retailers and consumers. Competition for floor space in retail stores has neverbeen more intense and that’s good news for retailers.

“There is a tremendous opportunity for retailers now to have greatlooking stores,” says Andrew Fry, head of leading POS manufacturersT&E Display Group. “Competition for retail space is intense andmanufacturers are increasingly aggressive in securing their place in your store.

“It’s something of an arms race and that’s good because the quality isimproving rapidly, not just the quantity of POS. It doesn’t have to costa fortune to look good in store,” says Andrew.

Manufacturers are increasingly aware that independent retailers arethe gatekeeper to sales growth and POS can make a major impact inthe commitment to a brand or new range. But the costs tomanufacturers are substantial so they can’t afford to get it wrong.

“Retailers are getting more discerning and are very choosy aboutwhat’s on offer,” says Andrew Fry. “There is a much stronger appetitefor change than there used to be but they want units that not onlyhelp them sell, but help them sell better – looking for thoseopportunities to trade up.”

Manufacturers have invested heavily – units are not only expensive tomake but they have high delivery costs across the UK. As thisinvestment is being made in a tight market, manufacturers areincreasingly savvy in monitoring the performance of POS so that theyknow which stores are worth the spend.

Sound, lights, actionKey trends in modern POS centre around a modular approach –smaller, more flexible units which can be easily configured to dress anyshape of store – and carry different types of ranges. Stores within

stores and mini roomsets are popular – ‘retail theatre’ as it iscalled – but they need space.

Larger and better quality graphics have become more dominant –again, manufacturers are spending hard-earned money on expensiveroom-set photography to inspire consumers and make ranges moredistinctive amongst a wall full of sample racks.

In terms of materials, wood remains a popular choice – seen asimplying a solid quality to the flooring samples – but there is a strongtrend towards clean, sharp lines in white metal and some strong colours.

POS technology has seen the growing use of video technologyembedded into wall displays and lecterns but the systems getmixed responses from retailers who sometimes see them as adistraction. However, when there is an interesting story to tellsuch as Furlong’s Carefree video or Mohawk’s famous rhino, then screens have been well received.

Electronic lighting is becoming more common with LEDsgiving a strong, white light that is cheap to run andstays cool so avoiding any consumer safety issues.

The feature is this month’s The Stocklists aims toshow some of what’s on offer. The time is now toimprove your store.

Ten tips for top-selling stores

ONDISPLAY2 0 1 2

1. Ensure a large mix of standard and niche products toreassure consumers they have plenty to choose from –even if they ultimately go for something safe.

2. Mix more expensive items with cheaper products so thatthe opportunity to trade up is always there – don’t placethe high end products on their own or in an increasingprice layout where they can be disregarded by customers.

3. Use your window – too often this is a neglected area buta good display reassures consumers that you’re a smartretailer.

4. Use your floor! Have the most popular of your highermargin products laid in sections of your floor. Consumerslike to buy what they can see in a larger sample.

5. Keep literature racks full – empty displays look tired andcomplacent and consumers like to have material to takeaway – and you can clip your business card to it.

6. Create different areas for different product types so thatconsumers are not confused by too much on offer in thesame place.

7. Avoid an ‘industrial’ environment – too many stores aresheds with industrial roofs, lighting and ventilation onshow. Use suspended ceilings, black paint and screens tohide the worst parts – the buying environment should beas domestic as possible.

8. Use soft furnishing, furniture items and flowers around theflooring displays to create a homely environment.

9. Avoid empty racks, dead bulbs and dark video screens.

10. Be careful about locating roll stock – very often it has aprominent position and lures consumers past the highermargin material. Consumers not only know it’s cheaperbut the large area helps them visualise it in their ownhome which is more challenging with small samples.

Georgian Carpets is backing the 56th Kidderminster CarpetManufacturers National Golf Tournament in aid of the FurnishingIndustry Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support.

The ever popular Kidderminster Carpet Manufacturers National GolfTournament, sponsored by Georgian Carpets, in aid of FIT andMacmillan Cancer Support, takes place this year at Kidderminster GolfClub on May 22nd and 23rd. The event, which last year raised £17,000for the two charities, is the second largest fundraising event for FIT.

Day One is a four ball team event while Day Two is a two ball teamevent. There is also a dinner at the Granary Hotel in Kidderminster inthe evening of Tuesday 22nd May. Cost is £80 for both days or £50 forTuesday and £35 for the Wednesday. The dinner is £30 per head.

Shaun Lewis, Victoria Carpets Sales & Marketing Director has taken overfrom Rupert Anton as Chairman and he commented: “We are tremendously grateful to Georgian Carpets for their continued sponsorship and alsoto Adam, Victoria, Brintons and Brockway Carpets who are the backbone of the event.

I know that both FIT and Macmillan are continually amazed at how much we raise for them, year after year. While the soft market conditions prevail,so does the generosity of our industry. It is quite staggering – and I hope it continues this year! The Furnishing Industry Trust is the only charityexclusively dedicated to helping those who are, or who have been, involved with the furnishing, carpet and allied industries, and who through no faultof their own find themselves facing unexpected or financial hardship. It is our industry charity.

While we have our loyal supporters I would encourage, indeed urge, newcomers to join us. It is fun – and it is for a good cause.”

Business news

The boardroom battle at Victoria Carpets ended with a ‘rebel’ victoryat the company’s shareholder meeting on March 6 and chairmanNikki Beckett and fellow director Peter Jensen have resigned.

In their place, former director and founding family member AlexanderAnton is back on the board along with two other new directors and SirBryan Nicolson takes over as chairman.

The consortium that sort regime change at the top of Victoria secured67% of the shareholders who voted after an acrimonious battle thathas seen both sides engage in a war of words that centred on therecent performance of the company.

The consortium said in a statement to shareholders before the vote:“The proposed new directors would like fresh impetus and thinkinginjected into the company and have provided a positive, straightforwardand achievable strategy for the benefit of all shareholders.”

During the skirmish, Victoria Carpets was even put up for sale by theprevious board to give shareholders another option apart from theconsortium’s proposal and the sale received “good offers” but thisprocess was suspended shortly before the shareholder vote.

Now Victoria will be keen to get back to business as usual – or better -after a major distraction. Group MD Alan Bullock said: “Now we haveto unite. The board has to focus on the business, work together andsupport the great brand of Victoria.

“The key thing is to support the staff who continue to do a great job.We wait to hear what the new members of the board bring to thetable,” he said.

The company is credited with gaining market share from rivals asconsumers switch to cost-conscious independent retailers - a movereflected in the multiple profit warnings from key competitorCarpetright.

Headlam chief executive Tony Brewer described it as “a verysatisfactory achievement given the current trading environment” andadded: “The first ten weeks of 2012 have continued a positive trend.”

Turnover rose 6.4%, from £535.7m to £569.8 and the companyreported that the number of active accounts had risen by 3%.

Carpet tile specialist InterfaceFlor is set to end manufacturing at itsYorkshire site with the potential loss of more than 100 jobs asproduction switches to the Netherlands and Northern Ireland.

InterfaceFlor, which has owned the plant at Shelf, West Yorkshire, sincethe late 1970s, said the move was due to falling demand in the UK andaims to save about £4 million a year after the closure. The company’sHQ will survive on the site along with sales and marketing, design anddevelopment, and a sample making unit.

Lindsey Parnell, European president and chief executive, said: “It is withregret that I must announce that InterfaceFlor is entering into consultationover ceasing manufacturing at Shelf. Our recent investment in state-of-the-art production technology has considerably increased our capacitybut unfortunately the market has not grown to the same degree."

Heckmondwike’sSupacord carpet tileshave been used tocreate a series ofattractive and highlypractical floorcoveringsfor a newly refurbishedacademy inNorthampton. MalcolmArnold Academyfeatures a number oflarge open-plan spaces, and a wide range of Supacord colourswere used to define different sections of these spaces accordingto their intended purpose.“The brief for this project called for a carpet that was durableenough to withstand high volumes of foot traffic and survive in ademanding environment, but without losing its appearance,”comments Heckmondwike Area Manager, David Stephens. “TheSupacord range was the perfect solution to this requirement.”

As the experts in carpets for education, Heckmondwike hassupplied its Supacord carpet to many hundreds of school andcollege projects over recent years. “Supacord’s tough, fibre bondedconstruction has been proven to deliver thoroughly reliableperformance and people know that they can specify it withcomplete confidence, especially for this type of project,” adds David.

This rugged construction also enables Supacord carpet to be cuton site, so that individual flooring designs can be created withoutany risk of the carpet fraying or unravelling. Together with therecently expanded range of Supacord colours this brought someparticular advantages to Malcolm Arnold Academy.

“The range provided plenty of scope to create different looks fordifferent parts of the academy,” says Contracts Manager CarlHarper who managed the project. “Various colours and designswere also used to separate adjacent spaces from a visual point ofview, such as a seating area next to a high-traffic walkway. Thishelped to define the purpose of the various spaces within theschool and create a variety of interior environments.”

With choices of 2m and 4m wide carpets, as well as a carpet tileoption, Heckmondwike’s Supacord range is equally well suited toother types of application, including retail, office andaccommodation projects.

A new Supacord sample card has recently been produced to helparchitects, designers and contractors in the specification process.
