The Steuben commitment to exce ll ence
embraces our craftsmanship, our material,
and our service. But nowhere is this com-
mitment more evident than in our emphasis
on design. It is a Steuben trad ition of long
standing to seek out crea tive minds, to pre-
sent them with an extraord in ary medium -
pure, clear, brilliant crystal - and to w itness
the remarkable unfold . Over the years, that
challenge has been met by artists from
di sciplines as varied as drawing, scu lpture,
architecture, and industrial design. With
their imaginations as primary tools a nd our
skilled craftspeople as interpreters in crys-
tal , Steuben designers create works of time-
less bea uty - from function al designs for
the home, to decora tive and commemora-
tive objects, to major sculptural works.
What follows are some of th e results of this
creative process, beginning with the works
of our newest designers.

E r i c H i 1 t o n,
a Steuben designer since 1977, finds
much of the inspiration for his work --
whether functiona l or decorative -- "from
all the experimentation I do in my own
studio." Hilton describes the design process
as one of distillation, of taking complex
ideas and channeling them into one
meaningful image. Hilton attempts in his
work to maintain a sense of illusion,
" beyond the physical boundaries of what
we know and feel." Hilton adds, "The
inherent nature of Steuben glass allows its
viewer to enter a mysterious world beyond
human reach ."

In a visual juxtaposition of threat and sanctuary, a tree pipit seeks shelter from the harsh gales of winter amidst the branches of a thorny bush. A central spherical lens represents the sun, promising the return of warmth in the spring. The branches and rich berries are created by carefully controlled sandblasting to contrast with the delicate copper-wheel engraving of the pipit. Th is example engraved by Ladislav Havlik

There, he approaches his works in glass
with a vision of aesthetic integrity. " It is my
desire at Steuben td demonstrate the
inherent bea uty of glass." Since arriving at
Steuben in 1972, Dowler has experimented
with various glassmaking techniques to
maximize the material' s unique capabilities.
" It' s a matter of letting glass do what it can
do best. Glass is most beautiful when it 's
allowed to play with light,'' Dowler says .
" In fact, my best designs contain equal
parts of imagination, glass, and light. "

Equally important to Atkins is the craft
involved. "You can't design if you don't
know the process." Atkins, who is
particularly known as the creator of many
of Steuben's beloved anima l forms, has also
designed scores of functional forms,
decorative objects, and geometric
sculptures. Several of his works have been

James Houston
is an artist and author whose sculptures for
Steuben frequently depict life in the far
north and in the wilds. His designs reflect
an intimate understanding and appreciation
of wildlife and of native peoples, gained
during the many years he spent living with
the Eskimo and the Indians of Canada's
West Baffin Island. Says Houston, "I cannot
imagine a material more representative of
the Arctic landscape than Steuben glass."
Houston is also the author and illustrator
of over twenty books for adults and
children, many of which draw upon his
travels and experiences in the north.
