According to John 17, he prays for us. Jesus knows he is going to die, but his burden is not for himself. Having completed everything he was sent to accomplish, his bur-den is for others. And what does Jesus want for us? Holi-ness. That we may remain separate from the world: in the world but not of it. Jesus wants all his followers to be holy, set apart for God’s purpose, and he wants it enough to die for it. All Jesus has done and all he is doing comes from this ultimate purpose. Christ’s sacrifice makes us holy. You and I don’t always think much of holiness, but that which is worth little to us is of ultimate worth to Jesus.

As we begin the journey toward Easter, let’s not only think about Jesus’ death. Let’s give him what he died for—ourselves, our devotion, our separation from the world. Let’s devote ourselves to his purposes, keeping our hearts pure for his use. His holiness is given to us as a free gift, but that doesn’t make it cheap. It cost Christ everything.

See you Sunday.

Tim

Sisters and Brothers,

Holiness. It means to be “set apart,” to have a purpose determined by God. How much is holiness worth to you?

They say that a thing is only worth what someone is willing to pay.

Craig was a young man, fresh out of college and buried under a mountain of student loans. Having just begun his first job in the city, Craig began flirting with a wom-an at work. Of course he was a country boy way out of his league—she looked like Heather Locklear on Mel-rose Place, and he looked like Screech on Saved by the Bell.

One day the woman mentioned how much she loved sushi. She said she wanted to try this new sushi restau-rant downtown. Realizing his opportunity, Craig asked if she would want to go there for lunch with him. It was a date.

Craig’s first sign that things were not going to end well for him was when the menu came without any prices listed. The woman ordered some kind of sampler plat-ter with one of everything; Craig just pointed to some Japanese word on the menu without trying to pro-nounce it. At the end of the meal, the ticket was deliv-ered: $150. At the time, Craig was living on a weekly food budget of $30. Afterwards, he said that no woman was worth it, that no meal was worth $150, especially when the whole meal was nothing but cold lumps of rice and raw fish.

What’s your holiness worth?

Jesus of Nazareth died at the age of 33, having lived ap-proximately 12,000 days. The Gospel writers devote most of their work to the last 3 years of his life, or about 1100 days. But the real focus is a single day, his last day—24 hours—beginning Thursday evening after sun-set and lasting through Friday. If you knew you had only 24 hours to live, what would you do? Jesus chooses to eat his last meal with his 12 closest followers, and as you can imagine, there are things Jesus really wants to say to them. He pours out his heart in what will be his final words to them, and then he prays. What does he pray for? What is Jesus’ dying burden?

WANTED: Disciples

Do you ever wonder what it would be like to start over again?

If I could start over . . . If I could go back to my wedding day, I

would be a better husband from the day I got married. If I

could go back to the day my first child was born, I would be a

better father. If I could go back to that first place of ministry, I

would be a better minister. Unfortunately, life does not work

that way. I am a better husband because of the mistakes I have

made and things I have learned in these 35+ years of marriage.

I can be a better grandfather today because I learned a few

things while being a father. I am a better minister today be-

cause I have experienced some successes and some failures in

ministry. And also because of the grace of the people in the

churches I have served. We learn as we experience life. But

while we are not in control, we can determine our steps

through the right choices we make. We can choose to learn

from our mistakes and try not to repeat them. We can choose

to listen for and seek the guidance of the Spirit. We can choose

the path of discipleship.

Jesus is calling us to be disciples. What then is a disciple? Many

definitions would work here but let’s just simply say that a dis-

ciple is one who follows His master. Who are you following? If

we are going to be like Christ, we need to be doing the things

that please and honor Him. Reading our Bible and praying or

talking with God each and every day are two things that will

influence our life each day because it draws us closer to Him.

Participating in worship helps us as disciples by putting us in a

place to learn, listen and praise in fellowship with others. Our

small group can help us to grow and hold us accountable to the

things we learn in the Bible and give us an opportunity to ex-

press our love through serving. Finally, a disciple reproduces

himself by telling others and inviting them onto the path of

discipleship. Since we can’t go back and start over, we can go

forward and begin anew the path of discipleship from where

we are. It is these basic things that help us be disciples. Where

are you on the road of discipleship? I am excited about this

path I am on and the new things the Spirit is teaching me. I

look forward to seeing you along the way.

Serving Together,

Warren Weeks

On Wednesday, March 1st there will be an Ice Cream Social for Josh & Katie Graves in the fellowship hall after the evening service. This will be a time for the church to celebrate the task God has called Josh & Katie to, write them a note of encouragement, con-tinue to give financially if led, and encourage them as they prepare to leave. If you have any questions con-tact Jerri Turner or Nichole Buckman.

of Psalm 139 and ask God to reveal to you how He has made you in a wonderful and unique way to serve Him? If that’s as a Small Group Leader for VBS, if it’s as a Small Group Coach over youth leaders, if you are uniquely made to operate computer systems consider multimedia ministry, if God has gifted you with under-standing how things work or as a teacher talk to some-one on staff so that you can fulfill the plans God has for you. It’s not just about you doing what He has called, but it’s about showing our kids the power of God at work through your obedience to the way He has uniquely wired and wonderfully made you.

Nichole Buckman

Director of Children’s Ministries

Have you ever heard of an adze? I hadn’t. Take a guess at what it is, what it’s purpose is, and how long it’s been around. “You would think that a sharp tool you swing in the direction of your ankles wouldn’t last long, but the adze can be traced back at least to an-cient Egypt. You use the adze to shape tree trunks and square them up into beams; looks like an ax with the blade oriented on the horizontal.” This is what I learned from the Popular Mechanics website. What I found really interesting is that while this tool can seem slightly dangerous it was still utilized for a very specific pur-pose for many years, and if needed can still be used to serve that purpose.

Let’s think about how this tool, the adze, can relate to our kids. All of my life growing up I heard that I could be anything I wanted to be if I worked hard, focused, and tried. Now as a parent, and as someone deeply concerned with the spiritual journey of numerous kids, I’m not sure I can fully support that statement. As a parent I should want God’s best for my children. What happens when what my child wants doesn’t line up with the Godly foundation they’ve been presented? What happens when my children’s desires for life aren’t rooted in God’s desires?

But what would the possibilities be if my children become teenag-ers and then young adults who cling to the truth that they were each wonderfully made with a very special purpose in the image of God? What happens when they realize that God’s desire is for them show off His power through their uniqueness and make a difference in the world? Don’t you want your child to never doubt that he or she is made in an amazing and wonderful way to bring praise to the same God that has a plan for his/her individual life? This is the truth of Psalm 139:13-16.

In June we will have a week long opportunity to discover this scrip-tural truth along with the fact that God made us to trust him, fol-low him, help others, and reflect his love. The last couple of years as our numbers have grown God has made it even more evident the need to recruit more leaders who can walk along this path of discovery with our kids in a relational way to help them not only learn about this amazing God we serve, but to experience what a relationship with Him is like. God is not calling amazing teachers or talented leaders to enter into this relational setting with kids. He is calling those who He designed to be a spiritual reflection of Himself. Is that you? Will you prayerfully consider not just what you are able to do or are willing to do, but will you take the truth

day of food and fellowship.

On Sunday night, April 9, our choir and many oth-

ers from the worship ministry will present a musi-

cal entitled “Lead Me to the Cross.” Among the

songs you will hear and sing are:

The Old Rugged Cross

Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross

How Deep the Father’s Love for Us

Were You There

Victor's Crown… and many more.

It’s not too late to sing in the choir. We meet

Wednesdays at 7:20p. And it’s not too early to

invite your family and friends to join us, April 9 at

6p.

Imagine what might happen for you, for them, at

the cross.

Grace. Peace.

Rod

Lead Me to the Cross Something mystical happens at the cross. Perhaps more accurately, many spiritual things happen at the cross. Prophecy was fulfilled at the cross. Jesus quoted a song, “My God, why have You forsaken me” there. Obedience happened at the cross. Jesus carried out His Father’s will there. Grieving happened at the cross. The mother of Jesus watched her son die. As did his best friend, John. And so many others. Salvation happened at the cross. Jesus sealed our future there. Repentance happened at the cross. The centurion changed his mind about who Jesus was there. The love of God was displayed at the cross. God demon-strated His love there. Some of my favorite writers have said it beautifully:

Nails didn't hold God to a cross. Love did. (Lucado)

Perfect justice and perfect mercy kissed at the cross. (Kauflin)

If you want to know how much you matter to God, look

at Christ with his arms outstretched on the cross, say-

ing, "I love you this much! I'd rather die than live

without you." (Warren)

Christian worship must contain both the cross and the

crown. Sing of majesty, and sing of mercy. (Redman)

Cheap grace is preaching forgiveness without re-

pentance… it is the Lord’s Supper without confession

of sin… Cheap grace is grace without discipleship,

grace without the cross, grace without the living, in-

carnate Jesus Christ. (Bonhoeffer)

College and Young Adults: College Small Group

College aged community group that meets at 9:45am each Sunday in room 53. This group is led be Caleb Hodges.

Woodburn Baptist Church is poised for great things. The pump has been primed. The sails are set. The vision has been cast and is now taking root. It is an exciting time to be a part of Woodburn Baptist Church. But, in order to actually see great things come to fruition we must begin with the right posture. In 2 Samuel 7 David said, “May your name be honored forever so that everyone will say, ‘The Lord of Heavens Armies is God over Israel.’” David’s attitude of hon-oring God’s name and pointing the nation to His greatness came before the success that is recorded in 2 Samuel 8. This passage says, “So the Lord made David victorious wherever He went.” The surrender came before the success. The pos-ture came before the progress. The attitude came before the advancement.

I’m convinced that God doesn’t give us overwhelming victo-ry because we simply can’t handle it or we aren’t ready for it. We merely stay poised for great things but never see great things. Without the right posture any inkling of victory or progress becomes more about us and about what we have achieved. We want God’s name to be lifted higher but we also want our name to go a little higher as well. We want to see the Kingdom of God advance but we also want our name and our work to be noticed. David’s comment in chapter 7 didn’t mention himself at all. It was kingdom-minded. It was a big vision that solely emphasized God’s glory. It was a comment that reflected a submissive posture to the authority and glorious fame of God.

We, as a church, are sitting on a precipice of victory and unparalleled success. We could be entering a season that sees God work and move in ways that Woodburn Baptist Church has never seen. Are we ready for it? Do you think we can handle it? Our posture, our attitude will tell us if we are ready. If we want any of the glory, we aren’t ready. If we want our name in lights, we aren’t ready. If we are Woodburn-minded and not Kingdom-minded people, we aren’t ready. But, if we just simply want the name of Jesus to be honored, glorified, lifted up, and advanced then we are ready. If we will just have the attitude of John 3:30, “He must increase and I must decrease” we are ready. Let’s see some great things happen in this season. Will you commit to decrease yourself and increase the name and glory of God? Will you posture yourself in such a way to use your life to advance His fame?
