THE ST. LUKE PARISH PEN June 2015
Thursday, May 27, 2015
Siblings in Christ and Partners in Mission,
The season of Easter is now over; having come to an end with our celebration of Pentecost on Sunday. With the
season of Easter in the rearview mirror, it’s probably worth noting that “go” is the final word the resurrected
Jesus speaks in one of the gospels. To be specific, after gathering on a Galilean mountain with his disciples,
Jesus makes it very clear that he is not dead and then says, “Go! Get on with the mission of the Church,”
(Matthew 28:19-20).
If you don’t know already, the June we have planned at St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church certainly honors
Jesus’ desire that we be on the “go.” So much will be “going on” it’s probably best to communicate it through a
collection of bullet points. Here’s the list! As promised, it’s long!
This Sunday, on the very eve of June, people of all ages will “go” to the Penn State Arboretum and then
to the Creamery for a time of fellowship and fun.
Beginning on Thursday, June 4th
, five members of our congregation will “go” to Altoona to plan and
discuss the “goings on and goings out” of the Allegheny Synod and of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
On Sunday, June 7th
and again the following Sunday, this pastor and whoever gathers for Bible study
will “go back” to their study of the book of Acts; continuing to learn how the first Christians responded
to the resurrected Jesus’ desire that we be on the “go”.
On Monday, June 8th
, we’ll gather for our monthly governance night so that together we might plan and
discuss where we want to “go” as St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church.
After worship on Sunday, June 14th
, I’ll take two of our teens to Sequanota for another “go” at
confirmation camp.
On Sunday, June 21st, Ella Meyer, the missionary our congregation supports, will be present to talk
about what’s been “going on” in Lithuania since we last saw her a year ago.
On Sunday, June 28th
, fifteen individuals from our congregation and five individuals from St. John
Lutheran in Bellefonte will “go” to Boston, Massachusetts for a week of Christian service.
Throughout the month of June, new and old flooring material will be “going in and out” of our
basement, as paint brushes “go up and down” and then “go over and back” while our steeple receives
needed maintenance.
Do you see what I mean? Quite clearly, our congregation has a lot “going on” in June. Whether it’s happened
intentionally or accidently, I can’t say. But we’ll certainly be doing our best to honor the Jesus who wants us to
be on the “go”.
I imagine you and your family also have some “goings on” planned for summer’s first month. I hope you enjoy
the vacations, the getaways, and the family gatherings. I also hope everything our congregation has planned for
June goes well too. But more than anything else, I hope all of our “going” is fueled and directed by that which
strengthens Jesus’ Church whether things are slow or swift.
To return to the Galilean mountain where this article began, it’s critical to realize the first Christians didn’t just
get up and go. Before they did anything—went anywhere, the first Christians gathered with Jesus, heard his
word, and enjoyed the comfort of his resurrected presence, (Matthew 28:16-18). If you’ve never put it together
before, this is exactly what we do on every Sunday morning. On Sunday after Sunday, we gather with Jesus and
one another in prayer and song. Then, we hear, speak, and sing the word of Jesus. Then, we enjoy and celebrate
Jesus’ resurrected presence in the Lord’s Supper. Just as was the case in Galilee two thousand years ago, all this
happens before there’s any talk of “going.” It’s because we don’t “go” very far without spending time with
Jesus and one another first. In the midst of all our June business, may we remember this! For as we remember
the Sabbath and keep it holy, I think we’ll discover that we’ll go a lot farther with Jesus than without him.
Pastor Scott
Pastor Scott will is leading a Summer Bible Study
on the "Book of Acts and Its Message for St. Luke Today"
on Sundays, from 9:15 am to 10:15 am beginning on the following
study dates: June 7 & 14, July 5,12,19 & 26, Aug. 16, 23 & 30
and Sept. 6
Looking ahead…If you have news or articles for the July issue of the Parish Pen Newsletter, please submit them to the church office on or before Thursday, June 25th.
The Property committee has been given a very generous donation of high lift equipment to assist in the painting of the steeple and exterior window trim for the month of June. We are asking for able-bodied individuals to volunteer to scrape, prime and paint the wood surfaces of the exterior of the church under the direction of the property committee. We are hoping to have 3 to 4 people per 4 hour work shift to assist not only with the scraping, painting but for someone on the ground to shuttle needed material and supplies to those on the high lift. The condition of the donation is that we use it Monday through Thursday. Please look at your calendars and consider lending a hand. This would be a great community service project for some of our youth. Please sign up on the sheets now available in the Narthex.
In preparation for the installation of a new floor in the basement of the church this summer, the Property Committee is requesting that ALL Sunday School classes, The Sewing Group, The Choir and anyone else who stores items in the basement of the church to perform a THOROUGH purge and cleaning of cabinets, drawers, closets, file cabinets, boxes, papers, books, and supplies that have not been used in 2 years or longer prior to Monday, June 15th. We will be
storing all items to be saved in plastic tote bins approximately 66 qt size. Everything will need to be removed from the floor to facilitate the removal of the old floor and installation of the new floor. Please let one of the members of the Property Committee know how many plastic bins you will need to house your items. The Property Committee members to contact are: Tom Sharer, Larry Frazier, Russ Judy, Barb Judy, or Cindy Grove. Happy Spring Cleaning!

St. Luke Worship Schedule: Worship Services are held at 8:00 am and 10:30 am every Sunday morning. Special Services are held at Thanksgiving, Advent, Lent and Holy Week.
The 8:00 am service is a simple service of the Word where Holy Communion is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of each month.
The 10:30 am service is a more traditional worship service with additional liturgy and hymns. At the 10:30 am service, the adult choir blesses us with their gifts from September through June and Holy Communion is celebrated every Sunday.
During Confirmation Camp, June 14 -June 19, the Allegheny Synod's catechism students will be compiling Baby Care Kits for food pantries and shelters throughout our area. Each conference in the Allegheny Synod has been asked to donate specific items. The Nittany Conference, which includes the congregation of St. Luke, has been asked to donate baby formula to this endeavor. The baby formula can be brought to St. Luke prior to Sunday, June 14th and can be placed in
the specially designated box in the Narthex. Pastor Scott and the St. Luke confirmation students will deliver your donations to Camp Sequanota.
The ELCA is holding a youth gathering in Detroit, Michigan from July 15-19 and is holding a collection called Diapers for Detroit. Imagine sending your baby or toddler to preschool or daycare wearing a plastic grocery bag instead of diapers. That is happening in Detroit. In fact, diapers are such a hot commodity, pharmacies and stores sometimes keep them behind glass because desperate people sometimes steal to get them. On average a newborn goes through 8-10 diapers a day, a cost that can add up to $100 a month for one baby.
For people who are poor that cost is out of reach. If $100,000 can be raised at the gathering, Target will also donate a matching $100,000. The Allegheny Synod is asking for monetary donations by July 5th to send with youth who will be attending the gathering. $30 will purchase 1 box of diapers. Won't you consider making a donation? Checks can be made payable to St. Luke with "Diapers for Detroit" on the memo line.
FOOD PANTRY DISTRIBUTION
The Centre Hall/Potter Food & Fuel Pantry will have their monthly food distribution on Tuesday, June 16th at Grace United Methodist Church, from 12:30 PM until 4:00 PM. If you are able to volunteer, arrive at 8:00 am.
Paper products (paper towels and toilet paper) as well as toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap and cake mixes are always needed and cannot be purchased with State or Federal funds.
Volunteers are always needed…to pack on distribution days or to sign up to unload food when it arrives at Grace Church. If you can help unload food, you will be called the day before the truck arrives.
Please call Bonnie Brown 364-1541, Eileen Booz 364-1675 or Erskine Cash 364-9184 if you can help.
If you would like to donate items, please have the items at St. Luke Lutheran Church on or before Sunday, June 14th. There is a donation box located in the Narthex.
Mark the date…This year’s Community Vacation Bible School will take place Sunday, July 12th through Thursday, July 16th at Grace United Methodist Church from 6-8 pm. If anyone would like to help in the planning in any way, please contact Kim Brooks.
Thrivent Night at the Spikes Join other St. Luke members on Friday, June 19th

and Game Time is 7:05 pm Thrivent Members will receive a free ticket
and guest tickets are $7.00 Please sign-up by Sunday, May 31st in the Narthex.
On Monday, June 8, St. Luke will hold the monthly Committee and Council Night.
St. Luke has four different committees that meet on a monthly basis. The Community
Relations Committee, Congregational Relations Committee, Spiritual Relations Committee
and Property Committee will meet at 6:45 pm in the Sanctuary for a brief discussion and
prayer with Pastor Scott and then each committee will meet individually from 7-8 pm in
the basement Fellowship Hall. Please consider becoming involved in one of St. Luke’s
Committees. Whichever committee may interest you, they would love to hear your fresh
perspective and new ideas. The St. Luke Council will meet from approx. 8-9 pm.

What is a dad? A dad is someone who wants to
catch you before you fall but instead picks you up, brushes you off,
and lets you try again.
A dad is someone who wants to keep you from making mistakes
but instead lets you find your own way, even though his heart breaks in silence when you get hurt.
A dad is someone who holds you when you cry,
scolds you when you break the rules, shines with pride when you succeed,
and has faith in you even when you fail.
