The Arts Center In Orange is a nonprofit community arts center with a mission to increase the quality of life in our community by promoting an appreciation for fine contemporary arts in diverse styles and ideologies. This is done by providing: a forum to promote artistic excellence; scholarship and education; a venue for artists and artisans to work, teach, exhibit and sell work; and a place for the community to learn skills, and to participate in and enjoy the arts.

THE PRESIDENT’S CORNERHOW MUCH IS ART REALLY WORTH? EACH OF US PROBABLY HAS A DIFFERENT ANSWER.
FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS, I HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH A GROUP CALLED VIRGINIANS FOR THE ARTS. THE ORGANIZATION’S GOAL IS TO LOBBY OUR STATE LEGISLATURE TO FUND THE VIRGINIA COMMISSION FOR THE ARTS, A STATE AGENCY THAT SUPPORTS ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE AND ENCOURAGES GROWTH IN ARTISTIC QUALITY FOR THE
BENEFIT OF ALL VIRGINIANS. THE VCA ASSISTS ARTISTS AND ARTS ORGANIZATIONS THROUGHOUT THE STATE, AND PROVIDES PARTICULARLY CRITICAL SUPPORT IN RURAL AREAS SUCH AS OURS. THE COMMIS-SION’S GOAL HAS ALWAYS BEEN TO GET $1 PER CAPITA IN TAX DOLLARS TO SUPPORT THE ARTS. WE STILL HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO, BUT LEGISLATORS ARE NOW BEGINNING TO UNDERSTAND HOW ART BRINGS TOURISM AND MONEY TO THE STATE.
AT OUR LOCAL LEVEL, THE ARTS CENTER IN ORANGE HAS BENEFITED GREATLY FROM THE VIRGINIA COMMISSION FOR THE ARTS…NOT ONLY WITH FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE, BUT ALSO WITH GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT FOR MANY OF OUR PROGRAMS. THE COMMISSION RECOGNIZES THAT THE ARTS CENTER IN ORANGE IS A SHINING EXAMPLE OF COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IN THE ARTS.
SO, WHAT IS ART WORTH? THINK ABOUT YOUR ANSWER. IF IT’S LIKE MINE … THAT ART IS PRICELESS … THEN VISIT THE VIRGINIANS FOR THE ARTS WEBSITE (www.vaforarts.org) TO LEARN HOW YOU CAN HELP KEEP THE ARTS ALIVE IN VIRGINIA.
THE ARTS CENTER IN ORANGE COUNTS ON YOUR CONTINUING SUPPORT TO MAKE SURE THAT ENJOYMENT OF THE ARTS IS AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE IN OUR COMMUNITY.
I HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL AT THE ARTS CENTER SOON. IT TRULY IS WORTH YOUR VISIT.
ED HARVEY, PRESIDENT

My Suburban Life:A Year in Collage Artist Laura Edwards Wooten presents her yearlong project of creating one collage each week during 2012. As an artist living in the Virginia suburbs, Wooten seeks to both confront and integrate her multiple identities of artist, wife, mother, and suburbanite. Breaking from her previous body of work, depict-ing imaginary landscapes, Wooten finds inspiration in the details of her everyday life. Juggling a busy schedule of art, work and family, the steady practice of making small drawings becomes the foundation for the collages. A commitment to weekly creativity brings a new momentum and spirit of discovery to her work, resulting in a heightened sense of curiosity, gratitude, and the ability to find the extraordinary in the ordinary.
This project explores what is achievable in tiny increments over time, by committing to small consistent actions and an attitude of openness to what is here, now, in the present.
Endings and Beginnings, 2012, mixed media collage, 12 x 12 inches

The Rowe House - 150 S. Almond StreetOwner: Joe RoweVisit with Gordonsville artist, Mary Beth Wells, who paints in two distinctive styles-- one known as Zhostovo and the other as Icon Writing. As an iconographer, Mary Beth, creates her work from traditional Russian
and Byzantine icons using egg tempera. Her subjects are centered on spiritual content. Icons are painted/written from early icons, they are not original creations. The iconographer communicates not his own idea but that which is contemplated. Mary Beth sees iconography as prayer and contemplation transformed into art to become a work of wonder and awe. www.iconography-revmbwells.com
The Thomson House - 154 S. Almond StreetOwners: Tom & Jerri Pitz Meet three fine watercolor artists in the Thomson garden. When artist Maria Pace was nine years old, her school art teacher was Mrs. Emerson,
“a tall, elegant lady with bright blue eyes and a sharp talent for watercolor painting. Because of Mrs. Emerson, I’ve been painting for over twenty years, which has brought me a lot of happiness through thick and thin.” It was during two months in Italy in 2009, inspired by the plants that she found while taking long walks each day on the dusty road that ran by the villa where she was staying, that Maria began a series of botanical paintings in hopes of converting the paintings into designs for fabric. Visit Maria’s etsy shop to find items made from natural fabrics printed with her original and truly lovely watercolor paintings. www.etsy.com/people/MariaPace
Martha Harris, a member of the Windmore Artists group, paints still life, landscapes and flowers in oil, acrylic and watercolor. Her award win-ning work can be seen in area shows and galleries. Martha’s study of art began in youth and continued through college, but was put on hold
to raise her family and aid in the operation of a large farm. With her children grown, Martha has again found time to paint and takes inspiration from the family’s Orange County farm.
Also at the Thomson House, another Windmore artist, Barbara Collins, known for her charming
watercolor interpretations of local landmarks as well as the gardener’s eye she brings to her floral still lifes and landscapes. “Flowers in still life arrangements or out doors as part of a garden landscape are one of my favorite subjects to paint. I think watercolor is an inspiring media to catch the fleeting floral colors. There’s always a new challenge.”
The Byrd House 205 Piedmont StreetOwner: Debbie Holcombe If you love animals, visit Kitty Dodd at the Byrd House. Born with a crayon in her hand, and encouraged and taxied to art lessons by her parents, Rapidan artist Kitty Dodd
spent a good part of her childhood observing and drawing the animals at the Detroit Zoo. When at 10 years old she discovered that her favorite “beatnik” aunt was an artist and actually got paid for drawing, Kitty’s future was clear. Working as a paste-up artist and illustrator for major department stores in and around Washington, DC, and later as a school art teacher in Culpeper, Kitty made a career of what she loved best. In retirement, she has come full circle. She is back to observing, drawing and painting animals, and studying art with instructors from Charlottesville to The Beartooth School of Art in Montana! www.kittydodd.com
The Walker House - 261 Blue Ridge DriveOwner: Harriet Moore Selections from the Nichols Gallery and Gallery Annex will be featured in this garden. With degrees in art from UVA and the Pratt Institute, artist Frederick Nichols has been exhibiting his
paintings and silkscreen prints in galleries and museums throughout this country and abroad for over thirty years. In 1976, Beth and Fred Nichols purchased the Williams General Store
in Barboursville and began what became a yearlong renovation, turning the store into a home, gallery, and working studio. Then, in 1997, they purchased the Barboursville Estes-Sparks Hotel. Built around 1900, the landmark building had gone from hotel to

boarding house to apartments, as the railroad depot closed and the village was bypassed by highway expansions. Beth had always wanted to run a gallery, and with the growth of the wine industry around Barboursville, it seemed possible. In 1998 they held their first show. Since opening, the Nichols Gallery Annex has exhibited the work of over 50 fine artists from the mid-Atlantic region. www.frednichols.com
Windy Knoll 256 E Main StreetOwners: Steve Sylvia & Nancy Rossbacher The gardens at Windy Knoll will host a graduate of Orange
County High, artist Todd Brown went on to earn a degree in Fine Art from Lynchburg College in 1980. Since then he has operated Todd Brown Signs, where there has always been a fuzzy distinction between sign painting and art. In recent years, he turned serious in his pursuit of fine art and opened a studio in the old Silk Mill in Orange, Virginia. Todd has worked in oil and watercolor but now works in acrylic for its versatility and permanence. He has sold hundreds of prints and originals. Favorite subjects include the railroad, scenes from the town of Orange, Virginia landscapes, Williamsburg and beach scenes from Nags Head, North Carolina. www.toddbrownpaintings.com

GAGA
An evening of fine food and drink wrapped around an auction of fine art and antiques to benefit the arts in Orange.
Last year's GAGA Gala was an unprecedented success. The generosity of our donors and sponsors was matched only by the
joy of the auction buyers. Precious family heirlooms found new loving homes and The Arts Center In Orange survived in a perilous time.
If you have an antique to contribute to this year’s GAGA auction, please contact The Arts Center In Orange, or talk to one of us.
And, do it quick! The sooner we get it listed, the better the price it will bring and the more good it can do!
