FROM THE PASTOR
Usually these columns in the newsletter are devotional in character; this month I want to talk about what it means to be church: not church as fellowship of believers, not church as communion of saints or body of Christ – all of which are deeply important – but church as an institution in society.
Easter Sunday, as I came out to the entryway at the end of the service to greet people as they left, there was a gentleman near the door. I nodded a greeting to him, thinking he was a parent of a child who had come for the egg hunt. He may have been. What he said to me was, “I like listening to the people sing.” It may be that he was simply trying to explain what he was doing in the narthex, but I had the sense he was acknowledging to me that standing at the edge and listening in to a singing community touched him in some way.
I received an email on Easter Sunday from someone in another state who lamented that for the first time in her life she had not been able to go to church on Easter. She wrote to thank whoever it was (Bob Smith) who posted the sermons and bulletins to our website each week, saying that by reading the bulletin, searching for the hymns on the internet and listening to the sermon she had been able to celebrate Easter at home.
During Lent I had a consult with a specialist to whom I had gone for dental work before. The woman at the front desk remembered that I was connected to the church and asked me again which one. When I told her about our corner, she responded “Oh, 40 Acts of Kindness!” and went on to say that it had inspired her to do the same.
There are 88 people who follow my daily devotional blog (watchingforthemorning.wordpress.com) and a steady trickle of people who find the site each day from as far as India, South Africa and the UK. I don’t know if all those who receive the blog read it, but every now and then there is an email thanking me for something I have written that encourages me to continue to invest the time in this way.
The Lutheran community comes from a tradition I would call “public church”. I doubt the phrase is original to me; I probably garnered it from some book or speaker. By “public church” I am referring to the character of the local congregation as a public institution in its community. Worship is public;
anyone who wants may attend. The pastoral office is a public office of word and sacrament – what every believer is commissioned to do, speak the word of grace, the pastor is called to do publicly. The congregation is more like a public park than a tennis club.
The first Lutheran congregations were supported by the prince. In free cities, the pastor was appointed by the town council. Even today in Germany and Scandinavia the local parish is supported by taxes. Some years ago, a Danish friend tried to explain the process of getting parliament’s approval to replace the roof of their building. There is a downside to state churches. But the concept that the ministry of the church was for the whole community is important. It is not a member’s only ministry. It is public worship. The doors are open to all.
But it is not only that the doors are open to all – the neighborhood is our parish; our “congregation” is the whole community. We serve them with a playground, a building for meetings, a place for prayer – and, yes, public worship. We are a place where you can come listen to the singing from outside the doors, where you can sit with your child in the shade, where you can hear a sermon or read a devotion. You may only see the sign out front – or read something on the website – but in all this, something is added to the community around us, something we hope bears witness to the true light and life of the world.
I think this is part of what Jesus means when he talks about his followers as a city set on a hill. (Matthew 5:14-16)
We can be a home for Boy Scouts and the Peninsula Harmony Chorus. We can be a meeting place for those in recovery (who outnumber each week the number we have in Sunday worship). We can be a place where a child can participate in an egg hunt and, even if they grow up and know nothing other than this about the church, they will remember they had fun there. It was a place of kindness. And a door will be open to them that may otherwise have been closed.
We are a public church. We are a village well. We are a city park, a town commons, a community college. We are witness to the presence of the risen Christ in the world.
I wore my clerical collar every day while serving in Detroit. In a neighborhood largely abandoned by
May 2014 Los Altos Lutheran Church Page 3
society, it was important by that small symbol to say that God had not abandoned them.
And so in this place – that doesn’t feel abandoned by God, just thoroughly independent of God – we seek to be a public church, a presence in this community that says God is here, too. Grace is here. Compassion is here. The presence of the transcendent is here. The holy. The good. The eternal is here. The risen Christ is among us.

NEWS AND EVENTS
LUTHERAN VISION CLASS
There is a unique spiritual vision at the heart of the Lutheran tradition, a distinct way of understanding the Christian faith and life. If you have ever wondered what exactly a Lutheran is, we invite you to come for this special program, Friday, May 2nd, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 3rd, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. We will discuss the Lutheran Vision and how it affects the way we read the Bible, do worship, and think about the ministry of our daily lives. If you are interested please contact the office or speak with Pastor Bonde.
Considering joining the congregation? You are especially invited to attend. This class does “double duty” as our introduction to the congregation.
TROOP 31 CAR WASH & BAKE SALE!
The Boy Scouts will be holding a car wash and bake sale on Saturday, May 10th, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the church parking lot. Funds raised will enable them to purchase a shed for their troop camping gear. Pre-sale tickets will be available after worship on Sunday, May 4th (at about 11:00 a.m.). The cost is $10.00 per vehicle.
In accordance with the boy scouts effort to be conscious of the environment, all cleaning supplies will be biodegradable, hoses will not be left running, and water will be diverted to landscaping.
Mark your calendars and come support Troop 31!
MUSIC NIGHTS
Love to sing? Want to learn? Join us at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays to celebrate the joy of music. We will gather in Room 5/6 (downstairs, backside of the
building) for a fun, collective musical experience. See Mark Wanless for details.
GRATITUDE
HOLY WEEK & EASTER
Thank you to all who were able to attend our special services and activities during Holy Week and on Easter Sunday. The assistance given from so many of our members and friends made the week a beautiful experience.
We thank all of our Assisting Ministers, Lectors, Readers, Acolytes, Musicians, Ushers, and Sanctuary Arts Committee, as well as the many people who helped “behind the scenes”. Though all cannot be named, we especially thank:
Bob Stanfield, Kris Stanfield, and Bob Smith for constructing the tomb stone used in worship on Easter Sunday
Ann Crane for coordinating the events from Palm Sunday, through Holy Week, and on Easter Sunday
Elaine Hanson and Ann Crane for baking dozens of Hot Cross Buns for Palm Sunday
Jim Wenks and the E-Team for the many newspaper advertisements placed and outdoor banners ordered and hung
Dianne Wiklander (and team) for the decorating, coordinating, and setting up of the Easter breakfast
A generous member who purchased the lovely interior fabric banners displayed in the sanctuary’s entryway during Holy Week
Eileen Robinson for her care tending the many palm bushes throughout the year
Scott Stanfield, Dean Hanson, and Rick Showecker for running the audio equipment
George Crane for keeping the website current with daily devotions, worship service times, and liturgical postings
Carl Gutekunst for all of the lovely photos he provided
Kate Burdekin and Lori Parsons for organizing the Children’s Easter Egg Hunt
We are also grateful for the lovely lilies that individuals and families donated to decorate our sanctuary during this season of Easter, our Friday

SPRING CLEANING DAY
I want to thank all those who pitched in to help on our annual clean-up day, the congregation members, and the Boy Scouts of Troop 31 and their families. The Church buildings and property looks much better. My thanks also goes to those who helped in the kitchen to keep the workers refreshed and fed. A special asset was our Office Manager, Natalie, who scheduled the tasks to be done, as well as our Team Leaders who executed them. Also gratitude is given to those who helped after the work day to re-fill the dumpster and recycling bins for multiple pickups. The volunteer turnout was great and very welcome!
At the work day we repaired and repainted the shed behind the nursery, fixed the door to the electrical panels, unpacked and distributed all portable chairs, rebuilt the folding chair rack and cubby under the stage, scrubbed all of the upholstered chairs, re-fit the pew cushions in the sanctuary, washed all exterior windows, discarded broken furniture and rotting lumber, wiped down walls, threw away dead plants, and had a massive clean-out of cluttered areas including the benches in Luther Hall, stage area, office, exterior of the buildings, kitchen cupboards, drawers, and broom closet.

BRINGING AWARENESS: The Support Network
Thank you for your special donations to this ministry during Lent. We will report next month on how much given.
The Support Network provides a shelter in a safe and secure environment where women and their children who are fleeing from domestic violence may take refuge. Our congregation shows ongoing support by donating gift cards which the organization uses to fund their many programs. Gift cards to Target, Safeway, Walgreens, CVS, Lucky’s, or Walmart, as well as gas and phone cards, are all welcome. Donations can be left with the church office. If you would like to know more about their services and ways you can help, please see Kay Reed for an informational pamphlet.

A STORY OF FAITH
I was eight years old, in second grade, when I began singing in the junior choir at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. St. Mark’s was our neighborhood church, only three blocks from our house and another three blocks from Lake Michigan. My mother had been taking my brother and me to this church since we had been baptized there as babies, and I had a fascination with the organ, the choir, and loved the music. I was very excited about being able to sing in the junior choir and about being a part of the worship service.
An old gothic stone church, St. Mark’s was traditionally designed with a marble altar at the front of the sanctuary, a big stained glass window over the altar picturing Jesus holding a lamb, with the verse “God So Loved the World” written in gold leaf English Gothic over the window, and four choir stalls, two on each side facing each other in front of the altar. I loved being in those choir stalls, close to the “action” at the altar, and right in front of the organ pipes which made such beautiful music.
This church was a place of beauty, peace, and community for me. Many of my friends in our neighborhood attended church, choir, and Sunday school with me and so my church has always been a place where I felt part of a large extended family. It is the church where George and I were married in August of 1970. The church was also a place I could easily walk and escape to find some solitude and peace when things got too loud and chaotic at home.
Churches were rarely locked in the 50’s, so I could go sit in the cool quiet sanctuary, look at that picture of Jesus over the altar and play all the lovely music in my head. And in the rather dim light in that church, shining through all the stained glass windows, I heard and felt God saying to me, “You are mine. You are loved”.

WITH OUR MINISTRY
AN EXPRESSION OF GRATITUDE
Thank you, Pastor Bonde, for your tireless efforts during this holy season. Your guidance, prayers, insight, and uplifting sermons are a support to us all. May we keep in mind your example of love and service to our community throughout this next year.
Los Altos Lutheran Church Council & Congregation
COUNCIL ACTIONS
On Tuesday, April 15th, the Council and Call Committee met jointly with Nancy Nelson of the bishop's staff to educate us about the process the Sierra Pacific Synod has in place to recruit, screen, and interview potential candidates for our new associate pastor. This will include putting together a profile of the congregation and our mission. This profile will be presented to the congregation for input and validation.
A brief Council Meeting was held afterwards where the following property items were considered:
Approved Troop 31 building a shed for camping equipment off the parking lot near the dumpster
Approved up to $4,500 from the Memorial Fund for a new, simple to use sound system for Luther Hall and outside. A Troop 31 Scout Master will donate his expertise and labor.
Approved a contract to replace all our light bulbs with energy saving bulbs (following an energy savings lighting audit by PG&E). $10,000 had been approved by the congregation at the annual
meeting in June; with the PG&E rebate of $5,190, our cost is reduced to $5,371. The audit shows we will recoup that amount in less than three years.
Approved a contract for the removal of a dead tree off the parking lot.
Troop 31 will hold a Car Wash and Bake Sale in the church parking lot on Saturday May 10th (with the water conserved from our landscaping then used with bio-degradable products so it can water the lawn and gardens).
The contract for concrete repairs to the sidewalk has been signed and the work is being scheduled
