Was Jesus Political by Clay StaufHoly Week is upon us which causes me to wrestle

with a question ldquoWas Jesus a political personrdquo If welook at the way his final days unfolded we might getour answer

Stanley Hauerwas says ldquoJesusrsquo triumphant entryinto Jerusalem is an unmistakable political act He hascome to be acknowledged as King He is the son ofDavid the one long expected to free Jerusalem fromforeign domination Yet this king triumphs not through

violent revolt but by being for Israel the one who is able to show it that

its worship of God is its freedom He is Israelrsquos long expected priestlyking whom the prophets said would come His entry into Jerusalem istherefore rightly celebrated by those who are not in powerrdquo

Can you imagine the irony of Palm Sunday The Jewish peoplewere expecting a great warrior They were expecting a mighty soldierto liberate them from Roman oppression They were expecting a grandentry into the city similar to that of Pontius Pilate And here comesJesus humble calm riding a donkey Reminding us that the kingdomof God is very different from the kingdoms of this world

What happens at the temple He gets angry at the money changersand causes a scene He turns over the tables and quotes Jewish scriptureby saying ldquoMy house shall be called a house of prayer but you aremaking it a den of robbersrdquo Hauerwas says ldquoGoing to the temple isperhaps even more signif icant than his triumphant entry into Jerusalem

The temple defines Israel The worship of God and political obedienceare inseparable The abuses surrounding the temple and Israelrsquospolitical subjugation are but aspects of the same political realityrdquo Romehad figured out an effective way to occupy the land paying the Jewishreligious leaders well to keep the people in line The chief priests soldout for financial gain

According to NT Wright ldquoJerusalem had lost its way so drasticasomehow the leaders of the Jewish people had gotten things so wroin their collusion with Rome and in their corruption oppression agreed somehow the Jewish people Jesusrsquo own people had gotten thinso wrong in their determination to bring Godrsquos victory to the wothrough military violence and armed rebellion ndash that the only word last of the prophets can now speak is the word of judgment foundMatthew 24 lsquoNot one stone will be left standing upon another Allthem will be thrown downrdquo Jesus showed incredible courage in calliout the authorities but he knew it would not end well He knew that y

canrsquot challenge the system without dire consequences We know whappened Friday

Wright says ldquoThat is part of the mystery of his crucifixiolsquowounded for our transgressions crushed for our iniquityrsquo He cannestablish the new creation without allowing the poison in the oldhave its full effect He cannot launch Godrsquos kingdom of justice truand peace unless injustice lies and violence do their worst and likhurricane blow themselves out exhausting their force on this one spHe cannot begin the work of healing the world unless he provides tantidote to the infection that would otherwise destroy the project frowithinrdquo It all comes together Holy Week ldquoWe see how the early wof Jesusrsquo public career the healings the celebrations the forgiveness changed hearts all look forward to this moment This is what it loolike when Israelrsquos God becomes kingrdquo

Please join us for Holy Week activities and worship services on MauThursday Good Friday Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday I look forwardseeing you there

Blessings

The Resurrection and the Life by Justin GuRecently on a Sunday afternoon I received an

urgent message on my voice-mail Wayne Puckett abeloved church member who had been in the hospitalfor months had suddenly taken a turn for the worseAccording to the nurses watching him he seemed tobe entering the final stage of life when hersquod transition

from this world to that which lies beyond itI rushed to Waynersquos bedside What I sawthere saddened me I saw a man confined to his bed unconscious andunresponsive More than that I saw a friend I saw a friend who wasso different than how I had always known him Normally so full of lifehe was now nearing death Normally so quick to help others he wasgreatly in need of help himself Weak and frail with labored breath hecould not leave his bed Sure enough later that week Wayne enteredhospice care

It comforts me to know that whatever pain I have felt Jesus has feltit too Whatever loss I have suffered Jesus has suffered it as well Jesusunderstands what itrsquos like for a friend to die for a dear friend of his diedtoo That friendrsquos name was Lazarus

The book of John tells us that when Lazarus died Jesus visited his

sister Martha Itrsquos not hard to hear the pain probably even the blamein her voice ldquoLord if you had been here my brother would not havediedrdquo (1121) But as if to assure her that the final chapter had not beenwritten he responded ldquoI am the resurrection and the life Whoeverbelieves in me though he die yet shall he live and everyone who livesand believes in me shall never dierdquo (1125-26)

Did Martha understand Jesusrsquo words Or were they opaque to herWhatever the case they must have rung like a bell in her ears for theyhave been ringing in the ears of the faithful for two millennia I am theresurrection and the life

He proceeded to the tomb of his friend There Jesus wept Likeso many of us grieve for our friend Wayne he grieved for his friendLazarus The ground on which Jesus stood became wet with tears thevery tears of God

Then moved with compassion Jesus performed a miracle and it

was among his greatest if not the very greatest Calling Lazarus oof the tomb Jesus raised his friend to life Dead for four days dead ja moment ago Lazarus was alive again ldquoTake off the grave clothes alet him gordquo his Savior said

At this point the book of John gives us a fascinating detail Tchief priests Pharisees and ruling council saw all of this transpir

and felt threatened by Jesus They said to each other ldquoIf we let him on like this everyone will believe in him and the Romans will coand take away both our place and our nation So from that day on thmade plans to put him to deathrdquo (1148 53)

Rather than rejoice at the miracle they seek a twisted retributagainst the miracle-worker How odd How backward Yet such the sinful ways of humankind How many times has this happenin history Though a person does good he receives not reward bpunishment from the jealous insecure and hateful

From this point forth Jesus was in grave danger because thoin power began to plot his death Of course in this Holy Week wereminded of what those evil plotters did They paid one of Jesclosest friends for betraying him They arrested Jesus They tried hin a ldquokangaroo courtrdquo and lobbied for his execution They had him fi

tortured and then crucified But what they probably did not know is what Jesus had saidMartha I am the resurrection and the life Sure enough three days laton that glorious Easter morn he was raised to life again Just as Jescalled Lazarus out of the tomb God called Jesus out of the tomb

At Easter we celebrate this most consequential truth Jesus livHe is vivified vindicated and victorious He is Lord of life and deaThere is hope for you there is hope for me there is hope for Wayne tno parting of our company will ever be permanent and that a joyreunion awaits us in the kingdom of heaven Jesus lives The tomb conot contain him nor will it contain those who are in him

He says so himself ldquoI am the resurrection and the life Whoevbelieves in me though he die yet shall he live and everyone who livand believes in me shall never dierdquo

Happy Easter my dear friends

This past week I was in my home state of SouthCarolina Although our state flower is the palm tree Irsquompartial to the Angel Oak mythic in size and elegantlyadorned in a crocheted cape of silvery moss Driving thefamiliar old road from Charleston to the isle of Kiawahone cannot help but fall under these treersquos spell I wasreminded of one of the classics from my childhood TheGiving Tree by Shell Silverstein

The story begins with a regal tree and a little boyIt is a relationship of unconditional love from the start In the beginningthe boy comes to the tree to climb and swing in her branches with theinnocence and glee that only a child can possess The Tree is happy Forshe loves the boy even more than she loves herself As the years pass theboy grows up In an effort to find his way in the world the boy makesmistakes loses his way experiences both the joys and the disappointmentsinherent to lifersquos journey The boy returns to his evergreen friend in hisgreatest need And the Tree is happy First she gladly offers him all ofher apples to sell for money Next it is her branches that she freely givesthe boy so he can build himself a house And then the day comes whereshe willingly sacrifices all that she is and allows the boy to cut her down toa stump to build a boat Through all of thismdashThe Tree is happy

Imagine if we lived in a world where everyone loved like the ldquoGivingTreerdquo A world where we gave away the coat off our own back set a place atour family table for the ugly the outcast and the forgotten doled out mercyinstead of judgment preached hope to the hopeless and spent our lives

searching the world over for the darkest corner so we could light a lampBut that would mean that we would have to think of someone

elsersquos needs before our own Instead of living our lives bent on personalachievement the accumulation of material possessions and trophies andpersonal security we would choose the less-traveled path of the saintsSuddenly we would experience that mystical glow that comes to thosewho are selfless and our lives would be imbued with meaning

When I read The Giving Tree today I think of Jesus For thirty-three years he gave us all that he hadmdashwisdom healing compassionforgiveness hope tears flesh bone and heart Like the Giving Tree even

when Jesus appeared to have nothing moreto give strung up on a cross with onlymere breaths left to his name he still founda way to give more In the most fragile andfrightening moments of his humanity hecontinued to forgive reassure love andpoint us in the direction of heaven Evendeath could not thwart his desire to loveus Easter morning arrived and with it hisgreatest gift ever the incomprehensiblemdash the promise of eternal life

Where Jesus dared to love indiscriminately and with recklabandon because of fear we love selectively and within safe boundarie

Letrsquos be honest we can be stingy with our love We so often gito our marriages our friendships our church our worldmdashjust enougWersquoll give a couple of our apples here and there for good measure wrthe check to charity do a kind deed in our marriages and friendshipskeep them afloat but only just enough

As I write these words just enough I know it to be so intimattrue I could just kick a tree for all the times I missed the opportunitybe generous with my words my deedsmdashwith my Love

We live in a world that preaches the survival of the fittest Protyour own interests first and at whatever costs Never show your hand Onfools give away all of their apples Who in their right mind would willinsacrifice their own comfortable life so that another (like the hungry ch

that lives only five miles down the road would have more than one meaday and might actually get the chance to prevail in this world)

To fully understand why God kissed us into being we must have tcourage to love beyond ourselvesmdashBecome a Giving Tree

At the end of The Giving Tree what was once a beautiful tree wnow nothing more than a stump

And She was happyAre we happyLive in HopeFarrell
