The Spire - March 2019 Dear Friend, In February, Diane and I had the opportunity to hear Rev. Nadia Bolz-Weber speak. Nadia is the former pastor of the House for All Sinners and Saints in Denver, Colorado. She has written several books and was speaking on her most recent release, “Shameless.” During the course of her presentation she used an image that captivated me. She spoke about being held so tightly by God that one can feel God’s heartbeat. In our better moments, our heart beat syncs with God's. In times of struggle, we feel the calming presence of God’s heart assuring us that all will be ok. In times of difficulty, we feel that heart reminding us that no matter what we are facing, we are not alone. It is a beautiful image. She expanded on this to point out that when someone speaks to us, their words pass through our heart and into the heart of God. And when we respond, the answer originates from the heart of God passing through us and to the other person. Again, this was a powerful image to contemplate. It helps me to better understand the ability to respond calmly and kindly to one who has been less than kind toward me. If it was just my heart responding to their words, I would likely respond in ways that match their words. But when I think that it is God working and speaking through me, I can be open to the possibility that something more positive and helpful will emanate from me. Perhaps our starting point is to spend quiet moments thinking about God holding us closely and lovingly. If we can begin there, we can expand to the notion of feeling God’s heartbeat, experiencing the breath of God upon us and the possibility that God is speaking and working through us. From such a perspective, good things can come. Pace bene (peace and all good things), Howard Update from General Conference The special General Conference of the UMC was held in St. Louis on February 23- 26. Dear Friend,

In February, Diane and I had the opportunity to hear Rev. Nadia Bolz-Weberspeak. Nadia is the former pastor of the House for All Sinners and Saints in Denver,Colorado. She has written several books and was speaking on her most recent release,“Shameless.”

During the course of her presentation she used an image that captivated me. She spokeabout being held so tightly by God that one can feel God’s heartbeat. In our bettermoments, our heart beat syncs with God's. In times of struggle, we feel the calmingpresence of God’s heart assuring us that all will be ok. In the church calendar, Lent is a forty day season set aside to prepare us for the joy ofEaster. For many, it becomes a time to give something up (caffeine, chocolate, complaining, etc.) For others, it becomes a time to start a new spiritual discipline (readinga devotion, praying at the beginning of the day, reading a psalm each evening, etc.) Inwhatever way you choose to honor this holy season, we will begin our journey togetherwith a service of ashes on Wednesday, March 6th at 7:00 p.m. We hope that you willbe able join us for this special worship service.

Trustee Update

This year is shaping up to be a big one in terms of visible improvements!

You may notice that the church grounds look slightly different. The trustees are pleasedto report a number of trees have been removed from the grounds in preparation for all ofour upcoming exterior improvements.

In addition, two exterior lights have been added to the east side of the building to aid withnighttime security in the parking lots.

Preparations are under way for exterior painting to begin as soon as it warms up. Allareas of white around the church will be receiving a fresh coat of paint, including thepeeling trim around the rooflines, the narthex entryway, and the stained glasswindows. Storm window installation will follow quickly behind the paint.

We are in final preparation for the resurfacing of our main parking lot this summer. Weare working out a plan for alternative parking arrangements during this time period, please watch the spire and the weekly announcements for more details on this upcomingproject.
