The Spire - March 2019
Dear Friend,
In February, Diane and I had the opportunity to hear Rev. Nadia Bolz-Weberspeak. Nadia is the former pastor of the House for All Sinners and Saints in Denver,Colorado. She has written several books and was speaking on her most recent release,“Shameless.”
During the course of her presentation she used an image that captivated me. She spokeabout being held so tightly by God that one can feel God’s heartbeat. In our bettermoments, our heart beat syncs with God's. In times of struggle, we feel the calmingpresence of God’s heart assuring us that all will be ok. In times of difficulty, we feel thatheart reminding us that no matter what we are facing, we are not alone. It is a beautifulimage.
She expanded on this to point out that when someone speaks to us, their words passthrough our heart and into the heart of God. And when we respond, the answeroriginates from the heart of God passing through us and to the other person. Again, thiswas a powerful image to contemplate. It helps me to better understand the ability torespond calmly and kindly to one who has been less than kind toward me. If it was justmy heart responding to their words, I would likely respond in ways that match theirwords. But when I think that it is God working and speaking through me, I can be open tothe possibility that something more positive and helpful will emanate from me.
Perhaps our starting point is to spend quiet moments thinking about God holding usclosely and lovingly. If we can begin there, we can expand to the notion of feeling God’sheartbeat, experiencing the breath of God upon us and the possibility that God isspeaking and working through us. From such a perspective, good things can come.
Pace bene (peace and all good things),Howard

Ash Wednesday Service
In the church calendar, Lent is a forty day season set aside to prepare us for the joy ofEaster. For many, it becomes a time to give something up (caffeine, chocolate, complaining, etc.) For others, it becomes a time to start a new spiritual discipline (readinga devotion, praying at the beginning of the day, reading a psalm each evening, etc.) Inwhatever way you choose to honor this holy season, we will begin our journey togetherwith a service of ashes on Wednesday, March 6th at 7:00 p.m. We hope that you willbe able join us for this special worship service.
