February is upon us and will we have an early spring or will winter last a little longer. The trusty groundhog will let us know very soon. I am beginning to enjoy the cool weather. The product show is shaping up to again be a

great show and seminar. This year’s show will be February 24, at the Clyde Muse. The Seminars will benefit all involved in the construction industry. The seminar will touch on asbestos, mold, and mildew identification and remediation. In today’s built environment this touches almost all of us. I encourage everyone to attend this seminar and stay for the product show.

April brings us the GSR conference in Pensacola, Florida. Conference dates will be April 21-23, and we are looking at taking a bus if we have enough attendees. The conference will be held at the Crowne Plaza in downtown Pensacola. The hotel lobby entrance is the renovated 1912 L & N Passenger Depot. This will be a unique historical building to tour along with the surrounding downtown area and a fun venue since there are several events planned to see some these exciting places. Some of the events planned are functions at the National Naval Aviation Museum and at Fort Pickens.

Our next meeting is February 3 at Uncle Bucks Grill in Pearl, MS. See the programs page for more information.

Specifying Traditional and Equivalent “EQ” Steel Studs

Having problems understanding equivalent “EQ” metal framing and how it compares with traditional metal framing? Are you receiving the correct, properly tested material on your projects? Since their introduction much has been done to develop standardized requirements for “EQ” metal framing products. This presentation will address these questions as well as outline the ASTM standards that govern the specification and performance requirements of both traditional thickness and EQ products and how they meet the requirements of ASTM C645. The course will also show how the studs contribute to LEED credits. It will conclude with an analysis of how “EQ” studs are listed in fire-rated assemblies.

Learning Objectives:

• What are the ASTM C645 material and

manufacturing requirements for drywall studs

• How do equivalent gauge studs contribute

to LEED credits

• What you need to know when specifying

fire-rated partitions

• When are equivalent gauge studs

permitted to be used in lieu of traditional thickness studs

Program

ClarkDietrich is in an unprecedented position to help you bring change to the building environment.

At ClarkDietrich, “Stronger than steel” applies to more than their products. It also characterizes the relationships they forge with, and among, key players in the construction process.

Who are the key players? A better question is who isn’t. It takes the highly coordinated efforts of the entire construction team to build structures that perform up to, and beyond, today’s standards.

ClarkDietrich stands alone as a single source for a complete lineup of steel framing products, delivered nationwide. ClarkDietrich champions the merits of high-quality cold-formed steel: It’s light. It’s strong. It’s versatile. But through innovation and rigorous testing, we better those benefits to bring you the full solutions and confidence you demand.

From interior to exterior, from framing to finishing, from complete systems to individual accessories—ClarkDietrich also stands for cost-effective, labor-saving solutions. And absolute code compliance.

The program will be presented by Brian Brentzel, Territory Manager at ClarkDietrich Building Systems

When we first started using metal studs it was to be the premier product to replace the old warped wood studs. Then we noticed with the metal studs solid core doors bounced in their frames, window headers sagged and other "structural" issues we never really experienced with wood. So the manufacturers started saying go to heavier gage studs at these locations. We did that and we still had some of the same problems.

Now with the advent of "Equivalency Gauges" we get 20 gauge studs made with the thickness of 25 gauge or less "but they have a higher yield strength" and they have ribbed "reinforcing" which allows the screw to get a better bite and hold. The only problem is we are right back to the first problem where framed openings are inadequate. And mounting items on the wall like media centers, flat screen monitors, speakers and all of the other tech savvy items our clients want in a board room spells disaster without MAJOR blocking and internal supports. (and don't even get me started about how "metal strapping" replaces blocking!)

They can say it's to make installation easier but are we really getting a better product? In

Are equivalent gauge steel studs REALLY equal ?

my opinion I say NO. The manufacturers are able to use less material (equaling more profit for them) but we will not have the same lifetime performance and we have been duped. It's like going to buy sugar at the grocery store and picking up what you think is a 5 pound bag and notice that its really 4 pounds for what you were paying for 5 pounds - makes you feel kinda bushwacked.

I ask my contractor friend that's fixing to install several doors and interior windows what can he do? He says install supplemental wood stud backing. So now to appease my own professional standard I now have a change order. When I go back to the manufacturer and say I want the stud I specified , they tell me - oh that's the new industry standard - we can provide what you specified but it will take another 12 weeks to get along with an up-charge.....really? What about a credit? Nope, NADA and by the way is that wood backing and blocking rated to go into that one hour wall?

The Other issue I have with equivalency is the little chapter in the IBC called - Chapter 16 - section 1607.3 Interior Walls and Partitions. This section requires that all partitions exceeding 6'-0" in height resist a minimum horizontal load of five pounds per square foot. This applies to the framing members only, NOT THE SHEATHING.

So tell me how does this work - I've nearly taken out an entire wall at a job site just by leaning on it , because the installers don't

The Mississippi Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute Page 5

attach screws to the bottom track because they are waiting to install the sheet rock. Now there are no screws in the bottom track to make the frame pass the Section 16 requirements and the manufacturer says it's not their problem. That it is an installer problem. So how does that pass a building inspection? Or even address the requirements for seismic? In my humble opinion it falls short of the standard. In order to meet the requirement EVERY stud has to be attached on both sides top and bottom. Now the sheetrock crew has to offset their bottom and top screw spacing. Yeah like they are really going to do that.

Don't get me wrong, metal studs are great for making straight walls and with the right selections they can provide better performance than wood studs. It's just not reassuring when I can take the return flange of a 20 gauge equivalent stud and fold it over with my wimpy hands. It just doesn't inspire trust or that the wall is going to withstand its occupants use over the next twenty years.
