Indeed a very warm welcome to The Small Print’s Review of 2010. Wow...what a year! Living and working in Ireland it would be easy to think that with all the focus (justified though it was) on our economic downturn, the EU/IMF bailout, incompetent politicans, rising unemployment, the return of emigration and the snow (Sweet Jesus, the snow!) that 2010 must rank as one of the worse years in living memory. But despite the wave after wave of negativity washing over us we still witnessed a focussed and inspiring creative scene throughout the year... Seriously, it was there once you looked for it.

From Irish animatiors’ Oscar success in March to the inspirational presentations at OFFSET in October and so much more in between, 2010 really was a bumper year creatively both here and abroad and across all disciplines. With that in mind, we surveyed some of our favourite creatives and commentators on what they felt were the highlights of the past year.

We hope this document will help redress the negativity and be a perfect tonic as we all look forward to making 2011 even better!

Keep in touch!

Film of the year? The Social Network.

Book of the year?Rediscovered the Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs & Ham (via my 1 year old).

Personal achievement of the year?Keeping my publishing venture -Unit Editions - alive and kicking. We’ve decided to say “no thanks” to the book trade and sell our books (and posters, papers, etc) exclusively online via our website. This might be madness, but we’ll see. Publishing our book Supergraphics was another highlight, and also taking up a teaching role at the RCA in London.

Event of the year?Speaking at Offset2010 in Dublin: the graphic designer’s equivalent of playing Madison Square Gardens. Only better.

The thing that blew your mind in 2010?Probably the iPad. Despite initial resistance (I love books) and a feeling that Apple was turning into Microsoft, I was soon won over, and I now use it constantly for reading books and magazines, watching films, web surfing, email and stabbing pathetically at music-making Apps.

Album of the year?Manafon by David Sylvian.

Exhibition of the year?John Pawson at the Design Museum

Your favourite piece of work;Of yours... Probably the logo I did for the newly independent (again) Mute records. It is an adaption of the logo that the company’s founder Daniel Miller created when he started the label in the 70s. But I’ve added the idea of the “third plinth”. This is a part of the logo (like the 4th plinth in Trafalgar Square) that designers and bands can fill-in with anything they like.

& of someone else...Ah, so much. So much. I’m partly dictated by the fact that it is something I saw the other day - but I genuinely love it. It is the imagery for the Liverpool Biennial by Thoughtful. Seeing giant wolves heads all over Liverpool was genuinely exciting and provocative.

Film of the year?Dogtooth.Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans I Am Love.http://tinyurl.com/42243q

Book of the year?Design book: Fanzine by Teal Triggs.Non design: The Memory Chalet by Tony Judt and Electric Eden by Rob Young.

Find of the year? All of the above.

Biggest disappointment? The usual things: collapsing economies; savage cuts to public services (always the wrong ones); advance of climate change; crap corporations treating customers like criminals; banks; bankers; celebrity culture: I could go on.

Thoughts for 2011?All of the above - although maybe i should add the huge rise in ethical and social focus i see in design students. It’s not isolated. I see it everywhere and it’s inspiring and fills me with optimism.

Personal achievement of the year?Launching my new websitehttp://print-process.com

Event of the year?Richard Seabrooke coming to London for the day 7 galleries in 1 day. Also, Tron premiere party in the Turbine Hall at the Tate [It was a bit like if Carlsberg made nightclubs].

The thing that blew your mind in 2010?Winning tickets on the Fred Perry website to see The Specials at the 100 club with another 100 lucky winners. It was Fred Perry’s 100th birthday celebrations and they had organised his competition it was the warm up gig for Glastonbury, a very ‘Special’ evening. I never win anything :(

Album of the year?Gavin Lucas’ stolen mix cd compilation, he played a blinder!

Exhibition of the year?Dieter Rams - Design Museum.

Your favourite piece of work;Of yours...As it’s the only thing i have done this year I guess it will have to be a logo i did for a friend. He is a cabinet maker so this is a diagram for him to make his logo out of wood. We will then have it photographed to form his branding for his stationery.

& of someone else...My son Jack’s drawing of an alien (right)I dont push him to draw or follow in my footsteps as i want him to be his own person and do what he is naturally best at but i loved the day he did this, he went off to the kitchen table and played quietly for 30 minutes [i was probably watching football focus] and then presented me with this drawing [admittedly it does look like a bird] but dont let him know i said that, it made me swell with pride when he handed it to me picture to follow followed up closely by Build’s book of cats :)

Film of the year?1 Inception2 Toy Story 33 Social Network

Book of the year? The Walking Dead [graphic novels]closely followed by The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo [I came to both works late in the day + guilty of not reading enough].

Find of the year?Google analytics [again late comer].

Biggest disappointment?Trip to Wembley[Saint Johnstones Paints’ Trophy]Carlisle 1 Southamptom 4

Also a highlight as it was my sons first football game he still sing blue army so the brain washing worked.

Also, having to fly home early from Offset 2010 and missing Mark Farrow talk.

Thoughts for 2011?Need to take Jack to more swimming lessons. I want to get into work more next year as the last 2 years have been disjointed due to building work andfamily stuff.

I know that nobody on their death bed says I wish I had spent more time in the office but works really exciting at the moment and I am really loving every minute so my focus for 2011 is getting Blanka 2.0 ready.

We spent a lot of time working on Print-Process in 2010, it’s time to spend some TLC on Blanka as its in need of an update. It’s 5 years old this month as I write [November] and whilst its served me well, it’s becoming clunky so watch this space [Summer 2011].

Also working with lots of new people and developing new work for both websites -[sorry to plug my own stuff so much] :)Also looking forward to the Wim Crouwel exhibition at the Design Museum and hopefully a more satisfactory trip to Wembley or even better promotion tothe Championship :)

Personal achievement of the year?Winning the tender to be creative director of Dublin’s World Design Capital 2014 bid team. It’s a great honour for the studio. Event of the year?Offset. Nothing came close. The thing that blew your mind in 2010?Kings of Leon – Madison Square Garden. Album of the year?Lungs. Even though it came out last year I only bought it this year. Exhibition of the year?NCAD Graduate show. Went with my little girl. Great to see her reaction to the work on show. Your favourite piece of work;Of yours... Difficult question, there has been so much this year that we are proud of.We have worked on projects for Dr, Martens, JDIFF, IMMA, Trinity we even created an exhibition space for the FIFA World Cup™… Although I would probably go for Maurice Ward Art Handling. It was a small identity/website but we got to work with great people; copywriter – Neil Cubley, illustrator – Orlagh Murphy and photographer – Eoghan Kavanagh not to mention the client, of course.

& of someone else...This is even more difficult. So much great work produced around the world; Elephant Magazine, W+K’s Old Spice guy, Hillman Curtis’s ongoing artist portraits, anything Michael Kupperman has done and at home; Detail’s Bullcat, Conor & David’s Kilkenny Lightwall, Aad’s Arms work... Nevertheless, as good as that lot is, I would either go for Tone, a series of furniture designs by Ueno Takashi or The High Line in New York. Film of the year? The Social Network. Book of the year?‘Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet’by David Mitchell. Find of the year?32 Lennox Street. A great new studio space with a window that begs for nonsense. Also, Jarvis Cocker’s Sunday Service on 6 music.

Biggest disappointment?Dublin GAA football team. They came so close to reaching an All Ireland Final and just missed out at the last minute.

Thoughts for 2011?Stay positive. We’re lucky to be in an industry that allows us to solve problems through creativity, wit and emotion.

Personal achievement of the year?Having my busiest year ever as an illustrator. Most of the year I have been working on a project that won’t be seen until mid 2011, but its very exciting. Meeting so many amazingly creative people throughout the year. I’m very proud of my role in bringing OFFSET to fruition for the second year. Meeting Chris Ware and Dan Clowes.

Event of the year?I know its a bit self serving but OFFSET2010 was the star for me this year.

The thing that blew your mind in 2010?Standing on stage at OFFSET2010 holding George Lois’s arm aloft as he took a hugely deserved standing ovation after his presentation. For years to come people will claim to have been at OFFSET2010 and heard George Lois speak! Incredibly inspiring.

Album of the year?I tend to listen to talk radio while I’m working and watch TV/films when I’m not, so music doesn’t play a bit part in my daily routine anymore. In saying that Aeroplane’s mixes are on my most played list for 2010.

Exhibition of the year?Laundry - organised by Steve Doogan for the IGI/OFFSET2010 and hosted for 1 night only. Incredibly creative response by all those who submitted work and the best attended show I attended in 2010.

Cor Klaasen retrospective organised by Niall McCormack.

Your favourite piece of work;Of yours...A design and bottle wrap to showcase Heineken’s YOUR HEINEKEN campaign.

& of someone else...Serge Seidlitz’s drawn apology for not making it do Dublin for OFFSHOOT due to the volcanic ash cloud.http://vimeo.com/11094729

Film of the year?‘Toy Story 3’. The Godfather and Star Wars could only make 2 decent movies in their respective trilogies but PIXAR have beaten them down with possibly keeping the best till last in TS3.

Honourable mentions to...Tom Ford’s ‘A Single Man’ - technically 2009 but I think I only saw it in January 2010. Loved every frame of it.

Lisa Cholodenko’s ‘The Kids Are Alright’.

Book(s) of the year?‘The Dome’ - first Stephen King novelI’ve read, loved it!‘Lint’ - the latest by the genius Chris Ware.‘Trespass’ - Wooster Collective’s History of Street Art.‘KAWS’ - monograph on street/fine artist KAWS... incredible body of work.

Find of the year?Nobrow - small press publishers from London. Really nice guys and their work is incredible.http://www.nobrow.net

‘Bored to Death’ - a comedy series on HBO. 2 series in and I am hooked. It feels like it was written exclusively for me. Ted Danson’s character is as good as any in TV history.http://tinyurl.com/yzshbwq

Lavinia Sima - the girl in the white dress from the ‘Always find me in the kitchen at parties’ IKEA ad.http://tinyurl.com/2aqqtyb

Biggest disappointment?Being so busy that a few personal projects got shoved onto the back burner.

Thoughts for 2011?I think the (understandable) panic that was prevalent in 2010 is coming to an end and people are more focused on positivity. 2011 is going to see a massive output of creativity in Ireland and I hope we can continue to be part of facilitating its development.

Personal achievement of the year? My book ‘A Bit Lost’ got published by Walker books this year which in itselfwas a huge achievement, then it wonthe Gold prize at the Association of Illustrators awards for childrens books!!!! Crazy!!! Was a pretty good year! Event of the year?Honestly I think Offset was my favourite event of the year. Certainly the best art/design related event i was at in 2010. The thing that blew your mind in 2010?Working in India and Nepal. I actually spent 8 months of this year there working there. I’m really excited about carpets and the prints that we are doing. Album of the year? Most played is probably Broadcast’s newalbum... Although i think it’s from last year. I’m a bit slow.http://tinyurl.com/3x2bl8z

Exhibition of the year?I re-discovered William Morris’s work at the William Morris Gallery this year. He is one of Britain’s best known designers and the prints on display are AMAZING but I’m also a huge fan of his outlook and philosophy. He pretty much stopped designing in his later years to write about social reform and set up his own publishing house... He invited people like George Bernard Shaw over to his design studio to give a talk about socialism!! Really amazing guy!!! It’s a bit out of the way in east London but well worth the visit.http://tinyurl.com/2v3qlybhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Morris Your favourite piece of work;Of yours...I’m very happy with the work i did forThe Gibson Hotel... two big murals and their menus and stuff..http://www.thegibsonhotel.ie & of someone else...Kevin Waldron and Michael Rosen’s‘Tiny Little Fly’ is GREAT!!!! A new picture book classic i think! Film of the year?In the cinema Gaspar Noe’s ‘The Void’ was pretty amazing. Totally crazy film!!!! Also this is EXCELLENT. ‘The Weather Underground’ by Sam Green, one of the most interesting and best made documentaries I’ve seen. You can watch it all online.http://tinyurl.com/2vgsxhy

Book of the year?I’m not very current with this sort of stuff. Most of my books i get in second-hand shops etc..! But the best books I read this year were: ‘The Evolution of Co-operation’ by Robert Axelrod (it’s the book that Richard Dawkins says we should all read instead of the bible!).It’s about game theory and how it isthat we are better off co-operating.Goes through from ants to military strategy... really fascinating stuff.Brian Eno’s diary... ‘A year with swollen appendices’. ‘The Blank Slate’ bySteven Pinker. Find of the year?Fair trade Nepalese carpet makers!!!These guys rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!http://tinyurl.com/2wgzk25 Biggest disappointment? Not finishing off my book in time (again!!!), ahem....! Thoughts for 2011?I hope i feckin’ do my book in time...!!!!!!! I’m doing a new picture book called‘Oh No! George!’. It’s about a bad dog.It SHOULD be out at the end of 2011/Spring 2012.

Film of the year?Well it’s definitely not Enter the Void. I wasted 3hrs of my life on the banal shock-tactics of a very conservative teenager masquerading as a thirty-something year old filmmaker. After any morsel of intrigue of watching the same special effects over and over again wears off, all you’ve got to look forward to is a clunky script, wooden dialogue and characters you couldn’t care less about. Album of the year?‘Please Turn Me Into the Snat’, Connan Mockasin. I’m terrible for listening to new music, but sharing a studio with Will Sweeney means I do get out of my comfort zone every once in a while and this record really blew me away.

Exhibition of the year?I didn’t see any exhibitions.

Your favourite piece of work;Of yours...I don’t generally like my own work, at least not until it has aged several years, but I was quite pleased with my Pensive Sphere silkscreen print.

& of someone else...I share a studio with Will Sweeney, and pretty much everything I see him draw is pretty mind-blowing.

Film of the year?I haven’t seen a new film in the cinema since my first child was born (5 years ago), but I did get a chance to see ‘Repo Man’ (in my top ten of all time) again on the big screen at In Between Days.I also watched ‘No Country for Old Men’ on TV and as an avid reader of Cormac McCarthy I wasn’t disappointed.

Personal achievement of the year? It’s been a surprisingly positive year work wise – myself and business partner Marion Cody, established ourselves under the new monocur of CO/DE (CodyDelahunty) & have been fortunate enough to work on variety of interesting projects. We were also able to employ a young designer in Paul Guinan, which feels like an important achievement – offering young designers a route into design at home is essential if we are going to have any sort of industry in years to come.

Event of the year? You’ll probably get this a lot but Offset weekend was pretty special. The importance of re-connecting with the greater design community, and hearing younger designers being so keen about design in Ireland can’t be overstated. An important event of the year as much as an enjoyable one.

The thing that blew your mind in 2010?The state of our country…

Album of the year?Arcade Fire – The Suburbs. A dark, joyous, complex, modern, classic of an album. A giant leap forward for the band and record that just has to be listened to straight through and then just start it all over again…

Exhibition of the year?Hummmm, afraid to say I can’t think of a single exhibition I went to this year.

Your favourite piece of work;Of yours... I think it’s very hard to be objective about your own work, often there has been such a journey where a project has changed maybe 3 to 4 times, where things that you loved have been lost or even sometimes things you fought for have been kept, but in the end you wonder why you fought so hard? We were fortunate to work on a really lovely job for the Mater Private Hospital – in developing their Heart Centre, they were a very inspirational group of people, some of whom save lives on a daily basis. We undertook a photo essay of the team with the photographer Matthew Thompson. The final images really helped to unite the team and gave them a real sense of being part of something important. http://tinyurl.com/29lvs88

Film of the year?Inception – Maybe slightly flawed, but one of the most exhilirating nights out in the cinema in years. And a ‘honking’ soundtrack to boot.

Toy Story 3 a close second.

Book of the year?Let the right one in – really blewme away, seemed to read nothingbut Swedish fiction all year(Mr. Larsson, took up a lot ofmy time!)

How I escaped my certain fate – by Stewart Lee is also a very funny & enlightening read, and is beautifully typeset.

Personal achievement of the year?Moving my studio for what I believe will need to be the last time ever. After moving from the East Coast (of the U.S.) to Tokyo, Japan, then back to the East Coast, then to the Pacific Northwest, it feels really nice to be in a nice, large space with plenty of room to grow and take on a lot of interesting projects.

Event of the year? The Sanrio 50th Anniversary Celebration in Los Angeles last month was a whole lot of fun. It might be the only gallery show I’ll ever be in that also features a giant ferris wheel and putt-putt golf course. All companies nearing a half century should take note, because the Sanrio folks did it right.

The thing that blew your mind in 2010?There was a large scale exhibition of Alexander Calder’s work here at the Seattle Art Museum early in the year.I’d liked his stuff in the past, but seeingit all together really blew me away.He immediately shot up from my top 100 to top 5 artists.

In a completely different vein, I saw work by Japanese artist Monyomonyo this summer at Giant Robot’s San Francisco gallery. She makes fabric masks that are part Muppet, part tribal mask. They were incredible. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if we start hearing a lot more about her in the near future.

Album of the year?Over the past few years, I haven’t kept up on new music as much as I once had. However, I did listen to Beach House’s Teen Dream a lot this year. A whole lot.

Exhibition of the year?Patent Pending, the poster companyI started with Jeff Kleinsmith in 1999had a large retrospective gallery show this year. It was just about every poster we’ve done in the past 11 years, displayed chronologically. It was great to see everything together and notice patterns, evolutions, and the occasional stinker (fortunately, there were only a couple of those).

Your favourite piece of work;Of yours...I’m pretty fond of this piece. It’s gouache and ink on Arches paper, entitled Summer.

& of someone else...That’s a tough one. One one hand,I’ve admired Tomokazu Matsuyama’s work for a few years now, but have never had the opportunity to see it in person. On the other, I’ve lucked into being in the same town as a Souther Salazar show on two separate occasions now and both have been incredible. The most recent was at Subliminal Projects in Los Angeles last month.

Film of the year?To remind me what movies came outthis year, I just asked Wikipedia for a list of all the films released in 2010. Surprisingly, the only one I saw wasAlice in Wonderland. And I fell asleep on that one, so I guess my answer is none.

Book of the year?I really enjoyed Tim Hensley’s Wally Gropius book that Fantagraphics put out this year. He took a very classic and familiar model and bent it to create something new/weird/interesting. For all the architecture nerds out there, I’m sorry to report it has nothing to do with the similarly named architect (though it does provide a running gag throughout the book).

Find of the year?MOONDOG! I hadn’t heard of him until a few months ago, and have been trying to get caught up since. He was a blind street musician from the 60s that built his own instruments and dressed in Viking garb. So absurdly unexpectedly good!

Biggest disappointment?Being asked to create 4 large drawings for a museum in Italy, only to learn that after I’d completed the pieces and were on their way to the framer that the show had been cancelled.

Thoughts for 2011? Things just keep getting better.Let’s do it 2011!

Exhibition of the year?Haven’t been to half as many shows asI should have, especially being in London but I really enjoyed the Brit Insurance Designs Awards exhibition at theDesign Museum.

I thought Christian Marclay’s ‘The Clock’ at the White Cube was a great idea also.

Your favourite piece of work;Of yours... Actually the thing i’m happiest with this year was one of the Shock Podcasts. A monthly radio show/mix we do. I put a ridiculous amount of time into them, picking 300+ tracks and then trimming them down to an hour or less. Even at that it’s usually a gruelling process that I spend far too long on to ever want to hear them again. This one however I am happy with, for anyone that knows me that’s a very rare thing. http://tinyurl.com/2g2drwx

& of someone else...Chad Kloepfer’s ongoing work for the Walker Arts Centre is one of the mostwell considered jobs i’ve come across. Incorporating some generative ideas to automatically create branding without the need for a designers involvement every time. It continues to evolve with the Walker Arts Centre’s needs and offers a glimpse of how branding will develop over the next few years.

“I don’t know why we are here, but I’m pretty sure that it is not in order to enjoy ourselves” - Ludwig Wittgenstein

Page 169: The Small Print Review 2010

Thoughts for 2011?With so many people out of work and so little optimism about it seems like the perfect time to be a musician or artist in Dublin. Most great artistic achievements seem to manifest themselves around hopelessness and a need for self-expression. And with a rising amount of people with lot of spare time to be filled I think it will be really interesting to see what emerges over the next few years.

To quote Orson Welles “In Italy, for thirty years under the Borgias, they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switerzland they had brotherly love, they had five hundred years of democracy and peace, and what did they produce? The cuckoo clock.”

Things aren’t quite that bad! But I genuinely think it’s an exciting time for some in Dublin.

Personal achievement of the year?Convincing the bank to let me keep my overdraft facility. Event of the year?‘Close to a world below’ exhibition curated by French at Scion Gallery in Los Angeles. They flew everyone in the show out and looked after us so well. It was one of those out of body experiences that seemed too good to be true. I exhibited new work I have been making about Dublin and I think it really confused lots of people, in a good way. LA is a strange but fascinating place. I would love to do more work out there down the line. The thing that blew your mind in 2010?A book by German photographer, Tobias Zielony called ‘Story/No Story’ really blew me away. It’s probably not every-ones cup of tea as it basically just documents teenagers hanging around different parts of the world hanging around and doing nothing, but it is shot so beautifully and just creates this really strong atmosphere and feeling. Goes to show that sometimes the simplest ideas executed well can often work out the best. Album of the year?Cass McCombs, “Catacombs”.

Exhibition of the year?Sally Mann’s ‘The Family and the Land’in the Photographers Gallery, London. From the intimate portraits of her ‘Immediate Family’ project to the dark brooding landscapes of decomposing bodies in the ‘What Remains’ work. Mann’s vision as a photographer is what i strive to be; uncompromising and at all times true to herself. Film of the year?‘Fishtank’ directed by Andrea Arnold and shot by Irish export, Robbie Ryan. I think this was released in 2009 but I only got around to seeing it in 2010. It’s magic.

Book of the year?‘Let The Great World Spin’by Colum McCann. Your favorite piece of work;Of yours...The portrait I shot of Conor O’Brien / Villagers for Domino Records. Conor is about as humble a character you are likely to meet and seeing Villagers go from strength to strength over the course of 2010 filled me with this weird sense of hope and pride - (from a Jools Holland appearance to a Mercury prize nomination over the course of one year is pretty amazing). I have been huge fan of Domino for a long, long time so getting a chance to work with them was a bit of a dream commission.

& of someone else...Christine Redmond’s project on daily swimmers at the end of her road in Sandycove, Dublin is a serious achievement. Christine who is wrapping up her MFA in Fine Art Photography from University of Ulster had never really undertaken a photographic project before. Partly out of fear that she wasn’t a practitioner of photography, because of her background in curating and teaching. However after a few freak-outs and encouragement from all around her on a borrowed medium format camera she has created a project that is still very much a work in progress but one the most engaging and moving bodies of work I have seen this year.

Find of the year?Tess the dog. Biggest disappointment? The weather and the powers that be. Thoughts for 2011?Try not to let the madness around you became an excuse to give up or not bother, embrace failure and walk the dog. Anything is possible.

Personal achievement of the year?Keeping it all together and still finding time to sleep. Seemed to get through a decent amount of stuff this year but next year I know we can do a lot more. Event of the year? The OFFSET speaker dinner. Don’t know how it happened but I was surrounded by George Lois, Steven Heller, Scott Dadich, Daniel Eatock, Tony Brook and more. Even topped last year when I got Massimo and Lella Vignelli. Can’t remember what I had to eat though. The thing that blew your mind in 2010?The positivity and energy of all the people who came to OFFSET and all the events that week. If we could bottle and export that we’d be in better shape for the future.

In terms of one moment that truly killed it for me it was the 5 minutes up to DJ Shadow arriving on stage at OFFSET. It was a huge coup to get him and logistically to get him there for that hour was pretty difficult. As the videos played down I was getting calls in my headset that he was in the building and as he prepared to walk, etc. and the hairs onmy neck and arms all went up. In however years of doing events I never had such an intense feeling. He also was a gent! Album of the year? It’s a toss up between Broken Bells and Underworld’s ‘Barking’. The first came out of nowhere to seduce me and being a longtime fan of Underworld it’s great to see them back as creative as ever, albeit danced up for the current crop of kids. Ewan Pearson’s ‘We are proud of our choices’ mix cd is pretty amazing too.

Exhibition of the year?In Ireland, Steve Doogan’s curated ‘Laundry’. Easily the best group show I’ve ever seen in Dublin. Internationally I only made it to London this year but I got my money’s worth seeing Van Doesberg at Tate Modern, Faile & Bast at Lazarides, Dieter Rams at The Design Museum and a tonne of other stuff, including the best of their finest ales, in just 2 days.http://www.flickr.com/photos/southstudios

Your favourite piece of work;Of yours...I did very little design work outside of my 9-5. I was really happy with our ‘Hit The Decks’ group show which was part of Kings of Concrete. Tonnes of great boards by lots of great artists all to raise funds for the festival. Also, the posters I did for Aidan Kelly’s solo portrait show. Was great to draw some nice type.

By someone elseBit obvious but, I always enjoy seeingwhat Banksy does next. The documentary was great, as was the street art that accompanied its openings around the world. His opening for The Simpsons was also fantastic, he always raises a smile. Fergal Brennan’s video for Sansro Xtro blew me away too, especially when he explained the production at OFFSHOOT.http://vimeo.com/8501824

Film of the year?‘The Social Network’ by a longshot, really enjoyed the story and the way it was told, great entertainment. Documentary wise I liked both Banksy’s ‘Exit Through The Gift Shop’ and the ‘September Issue’, detailing the relationship between Vogue US’s editor Anna Wintour and creative director Grace Coddington, a revelation.

Book of the year?I’ve never read a book :( so I’d have tosay the books I’ve enjoyed (ie, looked at the pictures, skimmed the text) most this year are the KAWS and Supreme books, both published by Rizzoli this year. I also picked up JR’s ‘Women Are Heroes’ book in London, a must buy/read.http://www.rizzoli.comhttp://tinyurl.com/653us6z

Find of the year?Darcel Disappoints by Rinzen’sCraig Redman was a revelation, the commentary, styling, visualsand optimism is fantastic.http://darceldisappoints.blogspot.com Biggest disappointment? There’s two for me, the mess the Irish people have been left to clean up by my incompetent government and creatively, a couple of huge projects not actually happening. There’s always next year :)

Actually, I was also disappointed with myself that I didn’t party more during the weekend of OFFSET, got to Monday and felt fighting fit, should have drank and danced a little more. Completely missed out there.

Thoughts for 2011? Work harder, tackle my fear of public speaking/presentation head-on, make bigger and better things with partners who want to change the world, and absolutely keep steering clear of pub chats as you end up sharing your ideas and they rarely go nowhere. Let the optimism shine through!

Personal achievement of the year?Standing up to a particularily caustic and unreasonable client, telling her she was acting loco. She was an old lady though, I thought she was gonna cry, but she didn’t and she brought her act from complete douche down to occasional douche. Worked out well in the end but could have so easily gone the other way...

Event of the year?Offset 2010 - no doubt.

The thing that blew your mind in 2010?4 days in NYC in April. My 5th visitand it just keeps getting better!Highlight was The Highline -even the driving rain couldn’t dampenmy enjoyment, amazing.

Album of the year?Janelle Monae ‘The ArchAndroid’.

Exhibition of the year?Went to the design floor in MOMA in April. Think there were 3 different exhibitions blending into one. They had the recently acquired @ symbol on display. There was so much amazing past, present and possibly future design on show, humbling.

Your favourite piece of work;Of yours... Recipe cards for Ennis Butchers(have a soft spot for the modest projects). & of someone else...There’s just too much to choose, but I’d definitely big up the Irish, to list a few: Rich Gilligan’s haunting shots of Dublin, Linda Brownlee’s Achill project, Mike O’Toole’s teenager series, Wayne Daly’s book and publication design for the Architecture Association in London, Johnny Kelly’s Guggenheim/YouTube Animation, David O’Reilly’s The External World, Renate Henschke’s Giant Glove for the Laundry exhibition, Conor and David’s website for Fabulous Beast,so much great stuff.

But I think i’m gonna plump forWill St Leger’s amazing legends series, amazing stuff.

Film of the year?Top film was ‘The Social Network’, but I found ‘This Is England 86’ way more affecting and heartfelt than any film i saw this year.

Book of the year?‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’(and the other two books in the series). Like a great meal, I read them too fast and then wished I’d taken my time.

Find of the year?Armin Hofmann, His work, quest and philosophy for £30 + postage - Beautiful...

Biggest disappointment?A turkey leg from a stall in Universal Studios, Orlando. Really, truly the most God awful salty abomination i’ve ever tasted... and BOY did they look good!

Thoughts for 2011?Onwards and upwards.

Personal achievement of the year?Learning to drive. Event of the year?Obviously Offset! The thing that blew your mind in 2010?St. Peters in the Vatican made me weak at the knees.

Album of the year? The Fall - ‘Your future, Our clutter’. Exhibition of the year?I saw an exhibition called Die Dada Die in Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich that consisted of one painting by the Chapman brothers, it was one of the Bruegals they’ve been ‘defacing’ - I’m not sure if I really loved it or thought it was a really bad thing to do. http://www.e-flux.com/shows/view/8354

Your favourite piece of work;Of yours...Of mine - it has to be the chair thatI’m working on now with a friend - we bought an old wing back chair on eBay and are re upholstering it with a repeat pattern textile print I designed especially (something I want to do alot more of).I won’t have any pictures for a while but will send them when its ready, in the meantime I’ve tumbled a few work in progress shots.http://sergeseidlitz.tumblr.com

Of someone else...Anything by Grayson Perry. Film of the year?Toy Story 3 . Book of the year?‘Boxer Beetle’ by Ned Beuman. Also, ‘World War II’ by Winston Churchill but Ihave a feeling that didn’t come out in 2010.

Find of the year? The hard-to-find place in the middle of a mangrove that I’m typing this from on the Thai-Cambodian border that surprisingly has wifi. Biggest disappointment? Not being able to speak at Offshoot due to volcanic ash (nudge nudge, hint hint). Thoughts for 2011?In 2011 I’ll be having my first ever solo show in a gallery in London. I’ll be thinking about it lots and making lots of new work for the exhibition which will be on for two weeks in October. Yikes!

The thing that blew your mind in 2010?Jonsi’s live show.http://jonsi.com

Album of the year?Beach House - Teen Dream.

Your favourite piece of work;Of yours... The Radio Post #2, which is at the printers right now. It’ll be beautiful andI’ll send a copy to anyone who writesand asks for one.http://www.theradiopost.com

& of someone else...Jop van Bennekom’s art direction of Fantastic Man magazine continues to be an almost perfect example of understated editorial design.http://www.fantasticman.com

Film of the year? Not a feature film but Myles O’Reilly’s mini-live film of James McMorrow in the Button Factory for state.ie was a thing of great beauty. It not only made the live show look amazing, it made being in Dublin seem so desirable. http://tinyurl.com/34o64q8http://www.arbutusyarns.com

Book of the year?Didn’t read any books published this year but I did finally get to read the massively fascinating ‘Dream Maker: The Rise And Fall of John Z. Delorean’.

Find of the year?Rediscovering the genius of I Am Kloot by chancing upon a gig of theirs in Berlin.

Biggest disappointment? Not getting hired for a job that requires me to spend some time in both New York and Tuscany, as well as at home in Copenhagen of course.

Thoughts for 2011?Everything is going to be alright.

Personal achievement of the year?Organising two shows, Drawers and Laundry, at South Studios in Dublin, under the auspices of Illustrators Ireland. Getting over 70 illustrators, designers and photographers to take part in Laundry was demanding but well worth it. The space was crying out to be used as a venue, and with the wealth of talent and energy to draw on at South Studios (ABGC architects and Swollen Design, to name but two), it really showed what could be done on a minimal budget. It’s become a cliche to talk of the upsurge in collaborative DIY activity and venues as the recession pulls the carpets from under us, but it’s true nonetheless.

Event of the year?Offset. You can’t overstate how important it is that this event exists. Genuinely inspirational. You can read all the internets you like, but there’s nothing like meeting the people behind the work to really join up the dots and remove those creative obstacles.

The thing that blew your mind in 2010?Realising that because I became a dad and therefore don’t have a tenth of the free time I used to have, I need to give all of my energy to the work I can do. I’m a very hard person to buy a present for: I only want time now. I’m trying to consume less and make more. If I buy one more sketchbook that goes untouched I’ll shoot myself. The other thing that tends to blow my mind is my beautiful daughter, but you’d expect me to say that.

Album of the year?A year late, but Two Dancers by Wild Beasts. I’m a sucker for a sleazy falsetto. And I’ve rediscovered the Fall this year: search online for Blindness on Jools Holland and the video for Bury Pts. 1 + 3. It’s got under my skin like nothing else.

Exhibition of the year?Laundry at South Studios!

Your favourite piece of work;Of yours... Burning Dog (left).

& of someone else...Al Murphy’s ‘Watership Down print.It’s just very funny.http://tinyurl.com/2ullwab

Film of the year?Inception.

Book of the year?Again, 2 years later, Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. It’s all about work, not waiting for lightning to strike.

Find of the year?Wood carving tools I intend to make good use of in the new year. And Berlin.

Biggest disappointment? The return of 3D cinema.

Thoughts for 2011?I intend to steer clear of blogging and Facebooking every little piece of throwaway tat I do. It’s unhealthy. It’s too tempting to show everyone what you’re up to in the studio, but getting a few thumbs up from virtual strangers is no substitute for rigorous self criticism and being able to distinguish a trashy first effort from a considered development.I’ll be keeping my own counsel for a while, work-wise, and concentrating on making something I can still stand over in ten years time.

Album of the year?I Am Kloot ‘Sky at Night’. Northern Skies is an amazing track. Also The National’s ‘High Violet’ & The Black Keys’ ‘Brothers’.

Exhibition of the year?Has to be Steve Doogan’s ‘Drawers’ exhibition in South Studios. Group exhibition pimping IKEA flat pack drawers... Brilliant!

Your favourite piece of work;Mic’s Chili sauces.

Personal achievement of the year?Growing our own vegetables this summer! We’ve spent the past 12 months settling into our new place on the edge of Sheffield and we’ve really enjoyed putting our garden to good use. We grew gigantic lettuces, tomatoes, bok choy, salads, (slightly retarded)carrots, and beans amongst others and we found it very rewarding and delicious! We’re already making plans for spring and setting up our anti-slug defence systems!

Event of the year? The Non-Stop Freedom Tour 2010. In October we flew over to New York to meet up with our friends Nichole and Carlos East to set off on a roadtrip around the wonderful underbelly of america. We spent the next 2 weeks driving deeper and deeper south through 18 different states and visiting some really crazy stuff. Highlights of the trip included the Eastern State Penn, piglet racing at Dollywood, the world’s biggest haunted house, bruce weiners micro-car museum, washington zoo, and a funeral home with an arcade and mini golf set up in its basement. We eventually finished in Chicago where we held our ‘The Wrong-Un’s’ exhibition at the Rotofugi gallery.

The thing that blew your mind in 2010?Walking along the ridge of the schilthorn in switzerland and seeing the panorama of the alps on all sides of us. It was utterly breathtaking! We visited the Lauterbrunnen Valley in July for a super-relaxing break and lots of hiking.

Album of the year?Shonen Knife - Supergroup!

Exhibition of the year?We didn’t attend any really to be honest! This year has been such a busy one with work that we’ve not been able to spend as much time as we’d have liked visiting shows. However we would have given our right arms to be able to visit the Sanrio 50th celebrations in the US or Japan!

Your favourite piece of work;Of yours...One of our favourite book projects this year has been a big book we illustrated for Dorling Kindersley. We completed 130-something illustrated pages in under two months and loved every minute of it! The team we worked with were some of the nicest people we’ve had the pleasure of working with as well. Sadly we can’t show any pics of it yet as its not released until March, so we’ll have to make do with a picture of our second favourite project of the year... our snow panda!

& of someone else...It’s an oldie but a mind-blowingly goodie from 1983. How can you go wrong with flying daikons, bunny girls, ELO and the magic of Gainax. Produced by a group of amateurs calling themselves DAICON Film the team created an intro animation for the Daicon 3 con in 1981. In 1983 they re-visited it for the Daicon IV intro and blew the world away. The group would to on to form the legendary Gainax Studio.

We don’t know how many times we’ve watched this (and the Train-Man TV series version) this year, but its been an amazing inspiration to us. Gainax, Daicon 4 opening sequence:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40keiiFDE Film of the year?4 Lions! Rubber Dinghy Rapids and Sheffield innit bro.

Book of the year?Rilla Alexander’s ‘Her Idea’. It’s lovely!!!

Find of the year? Our 1993 Autozam Carol! We bought this little car in April as a friend for our Honda Beat and the next restoration project for us. As most of our friends know we’re nuts about japanese Kei cars (tiny cars with tiny engines!). As far as we know Carol is the only Carol in the country and we’ve really enjoyed driving her round and working on her this year.

Biggest disappointment? The realisation that there’s simply not been enough days in this year to do all the things we wanted to!

Personal achievement of the year?Covering 17 windows of Selfridges on Oxford Street with my work as part of the Nike Stadium for the World Cup.

Event of the year? For me turning the dreaded 30.

The thing that blew your mind in 2010?Lance Wyman & George Lois at OFFSET in Dublin.

Album of the year?Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest /Sufjan Stevens - Age of Adz /Joanna Newsom - Have One on Me Exhibition of the year? There’s been a few really good shows I’ve been lucky enough to catch but, because of work, I really don’t get to see anywhere near enough. To try and correct that, and actually make the most of living in London for a change, I’m taking the whole day off tomorrow to go round some galleries in town which I’m really excited about.

Having said all that, the one show that I’d highlight for such a unique personal experience, and apologies for picking one I was in, is the “ING Discerning Eye” exhibition recently on at the Mall Galleries. I had been invited to exhibit by a newspaper Art Critic and so naturally was quite excited about the show and worked hard on the new pieces. We all turned up for the launch, found where my work was and discovered I was nowhere to be seen in the catalogue and that my work was credited as being done by an older lady (I think Patricia or Dorothy) whose real piece was a painting of some plums which sat gleefully next to my two originals. It was a surreal combination of anticipation, disappointment, lots of free wine and laughter hitting me at once. If it all goes wrong at least I know I have a back up alter ego I can assume now.

Your favourite piece of work;Of yours... Semblance 12. & of someone else...I’m not sure of the tile but its by the incredibly talented Jesse Auersalo. (Pictured right)

Film of the year?I don’t get to the cinema as often asI should so my choice isn’t particularly cool but it WAS f***ing amazing -Toy Story 3.

Book of the year?I don’t think any of the books I’ve been reading came out this year.

Find of the year? The surprisingly strong mulled wine serve in half pint tankards next to a giant open fire in the Mermaid Inn, Rye, East Sussex.

Biggest disappointment?The government.

Thoughts for 2011?It’s going to be ace.
