FROM REV STEVE DAY Our holiday this year was in the foothills of the Italian Alps: its keynotes were lakes, mountains … and ice-cream!

Mountains have always intrigued me, especially as l iving in this part of the country they are a rare experience. They stand immovable, unavoidable, huge beyond my ability to comprehend. They don’t suffer from the weather – they make the weather. They can seem at times breathtakingly beautiful, at others, heart-quenchingly threatening. A snowy peak, seen on a hot

summers day, reminds me that creation is wonderful and finely balanced. Sometimes a mountain is hidden by cloud, but it’s sti l l there, just as mass ive and awe-inspiring as ever, and the fault is in my inability to perceive.

It struck me that how I feel about mountains reflects how I feel about God: as far beyond my moving or controlling as any mountain; beautiful but also terrifying as I become awar e of my insignificance and sinfulness in comparison; and always present, even when I, in my humanity,

can’t see past my present reality. Mountains feature a lot in the Biblical narrative, often as places of encounter with God, but the

writers were in no doubt that however impressive the mountains might be, God is more so. In the Psalms we read: Glorious are you, more majestic than the everlasting mountains In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also.

The mountains melt l ike wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth.

I don’t know whether your holiday this year will feature mountains.

If it does, I hope you will spend some time allowing the mountains to speak to your soul about the nature of God. If it doesn’t, remember that just because you can’t see the mountains, it doesn’t mean they aren’t there.

God is there in terrifying holiness, and incomprehensible love, waiting, as patiently as the mountains, for you to come.

The ice-creams? That’s for another letter!

Eltisley Feast Week Quiz: A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who came along to the Feast Week Quiz, which raised a wonderful £196 for the Teenage Cancer Trust. The excitement in the marquee, which was undoubtedly full of the finest brains in the country, was intense, with only 3 points between the top five teams at the end of the evening. Congratulations and special thanks to the top two teams, JBFC and Old Spice, (with only half a point between them!), who both donated their winnings to the charity. Well done everyone.

ELTISLEY WI NEWS: What artistic talent has been hidden among our members! ST PANDIONIA’S PARISH – SEPTEMBER

This month, we look forward to returning to our normal pattern of weekly church services after the summer break. Kids Rock and St Pandionia’s Cafe also start again - more details elsewhere in the newsletter. Our first get together of the new season is on Saturday 3rd September as John and Anne Pettifor kindly host the annual Papworth Team BBQ, a great chance to meet and catch up with each other and those in surrounding villages. All are very welcome but do contact Anne for a ticket. For those who like to be active, Bruce Hill and others will be taking part in CHCT’s annual “Ride and Stride” on the Saturday 10th September. Cycle or walk around as many of our local churches as you can and help raise funds for this local charity which does so much to support churches like ours around the county. Do get in touch with Bruce (01480 880020) for more details. Our own ongoing fundraising for the urgent repairs needed to the church tower continue - do let Nichola Donald (880285) have any of your unwanted textiles or buy a 100 club ticket. Last month’s lucky winners were: 1st - Molly McSweeney, 2nd - Darius Lambert, 3rd - The Freeman Family. Later in the month, we look forward to celebrating God’s generosity to us at our Harvest Festival service on Sunday 18th September at 10.30am. Do bring your harvest gifts to the church beforehand or on the day. Lastly, our thoughts and prayers are with the Lines family as they mourn Jean’s recent death. 28th Sept: English Market Towns since 1750 (mainly East Anglia) by Tony Kirby

In September we remember the sacrifice made by Charles ‘John’ Hall, who was killed on 20th September

1943, during the Second World War and also Frank Riseley, who was killed on 26th September 1917, during

the Fi rst World War.

Charles Hall was in the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment. After duty on the home front his Batta lion was sent to Malaya in early 1942. It surrendered to Japanese forces after the fall of Singapore. Charles was one of the thousands forced to work on the Burma – Siam ra ilway. He died in captivity and his buried in Thanbyuzayat Cemetery. He i s also remembered on a plaque in El tisley church. Frank Riseley was in the 1st Cambridgeshires. He was killed on 26th September 1917 when he was 22 years

old. Frank has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, which commemorates a lmost 35,000 officers and men whose graves are not known .

After some very mixed early summer weather, August at last provided us with some warm sunshine that helped our farmers gather the harvest and made for some enjoyable summer

holidays. Let’s hope September follows on in the same vein, an Indian Summer always helps to shorten the winter. As the fields are cleared there is an increase in opportunist crime to the rear of properties that

can be accessed more easily, do keep all doors, windows gates and sheds locked. We have also seen a number of thefts from parked vehicles, particularly vans and it is wise to remove all valuables overnight. Most disturbing are reports of Internet fraud and grooming of young

people. The best advice is to treat everything with suspicion and be quite sure that you know exactly what your children have access to. Talking of children, I know how much fun the Newton School pupils had in the Pocket Park

during the Forest Schools Programme, and I notice some are returning to practice what they learned! I really would appreciate it if you could persuade your budding structural engineers not to dam up the brook running through the Park, it is an important watercourse and as it fi l ls with winter rains it could become dangerous for the young adventurers.

We had a select but will ing and energetic working party to dress the Woodland Walk Paths with fresh woodchip and they now look pristine again thanks to our volunteers and you may be

interested to know that our new Defibril lator has been used for the first time. Fortunately there were no serious consequences, but it has already proved it’s worth. I attended a meeting recently to discuss the route of the new dual A42 8 which is sti l l in the

consultation stage, but as the start date is 5 years away we continue to campaign for improvements to the Cambridge Road Junction. I routinely wait in excess of 10 minutes to turn right, and as the volume of traffic increases almos t daily this can only get worse.

Finally, I have been asked once again to ask horse riders in the vil lage to clear up after their mounts. I know some are responsible but sadly not all, and the offending mess on roads, and even a footpath!, is unpleasant for walkers, cyclists and particularly pushchairs and wheelchairs.

The next PC meeting will be at The Cade on Tuesday, 13th September commencing at 7.30pm hope to see you there.

As always, praise or problems to me at 45 Caxton End or on 01480 880122 or [email protected] or our Clerk Jane Bowd on 01480 468451 or [email protected]
