The Silsbee Lady Tigers vol-leyball team has plenty of sizebut they must work on bondingas a team before they will be achampionship caliber unit. Coach Lindsay Leach says she

is hoping that the girls will be upto the challenge and they willcome together as a unit prior tothe start of district play. There are actually four three-

year starters and the Libero

returning off last year’s team. The Libero is a player who nor-

mally plays in only the back row.She can be freely substituted forany of the other players as theyrotate through the back row. Gretchen Stancil is one of the

Tigers leaders and she fills therole of the Libero. She is a 5-foot-3 senior. The other starters who are

returning include Yancy Burns, a

5-10 senior middle blocker,Katelyn Alexander, a 5-9 senioroutside blocker and Kolbie Kruft,a 5-6 senior setter. Erin Watson is new to the var-

sity this year. She is a 6-4 juniormiddle blocker. She will bejoined by Ashley Waters, a 5-10junior utility player, KeanuAdams, a 5-7 outside hitter,Keadra Bonner, a 5-4 defensivespecialist, Katie Johnson, a 5-8

right side hitter, Lexie Thomas, a5-5 outside hitter and HalunHarris, a 5-7 right side hitter. All of the girls are seniors

except Harris who is a junior. Coach Leach is pretty confi-

dent that the girls can be moldedinto a competitive squad. However she says you can’t be

too optimistic because the districtis extremely tough. She viewsOrangefield as having the most

talent returning to action this yearbut sees Bridge City andHamshire-Fannett as beingextremely tough. She noted thatMiranda Thornton is the newcoach at Hardin-Jefferson andfeels they will have a top notchclub.

dom ever loses. Prior to playlast Saturday, the squad was 2-1this year. Coach Hollyfield says, “The

team hates losing more than I do.

They are very competitive. Ithelps to have that. They are fan-tastic and very coachable. I havea group of ten girls who comefrom good families. Their parents

tend to stand behind the programand they are like a big family.”Hollyfield is assisted by a

group of people including TashaAdams, her dad Dave Pattarozzi,

Camilla Howard, BethanyBertrand, Brooke Tanton andMegan Force. According to Hollyfield, for

most of the people in the pro-gram the sport is not just a game.

It is not a job. It is something funto be around and enjoy. The endresult is that there are not manyschools around where the girlswork as hard as they do atEvadale.

The Silsbee cross country teamhas been out running, but theyhave not got their team assem-bled. They have two varsity runners

returning from last year, TonyHart and D.J. Foster. Both of therunners went to regionals andhave a lot of experience. In addi-tion, the team had a runner movein who is a transfer from BridgeCity and ran on the Bridge Cityvarsity team. That is Brock Jones.Coach Jason Sanders anticipatesthat he will help the team a lot. There are two new runners on

the team. Brandon Harris andChristian Foster. Coach Sanders thinks that

more kids will report out at thestart of school but the ones whohave been running at 7:30 everymorning have an advantage overthem. At the present time there is one

girl, Madilyn Bever, runningwith the team. Sanders says that he will soon

have a new roster and hopefullya new schedule that will appearin the paper at a later date.

The Evadale Lady Rebels are aperennial power in Class A vol-leyball. They have been underthe direction of Coach DebbieHolleyfield off and on since1996. Every year they play a host of

AA and AAA clubs in pre-districtplay and none of the teams takethe Class A school for grantedbecause they are a power, notonly in Class A, but in highschool volleyball in general inthe area. This year the club has three

returning seniors who are allstarters. The rest of the varsity isjuniors, so the team appears to bestrong not only this year but inthe following year. The club has set a goal to finish

with an unbeaten record in dis-trict play. Last year they finisheddistrict play with one loss. CoachHolleyfield also feels that thesquad has a shot at advancingthrough the area round and makeit to the regionals or even thestate tournament. The returning starters from last

year include junior BrittaneRawls, 5’ 7”,who was the sitterlast year. Seniors Brianne Doyen, 5’ 7”,

and Hope Richardson, 5’ 7”, arethe returning outside hitters. Holly Stringer,5’ 9”, came off

the bench last year and played onthe outside. This year she will beplaying middle. The rest of the players came

from the JV team. The biggest surprise for

Hollyfield is the middle blocker,Kennedy Jackson, 5’8”, whomoved up from the JV team. She

is pretty powerful. CoachHollyfield describes her as astrong, aggressive blocker on thenet who is going to be a lot ofhelp. The coach believes that shewill be the missing link that willpropel the club forward this year. Hollyfield is confident about

the squad because most of thegirls played summer league inSilsbee. They went to a teamcamp and looked good from theget-go in practice. The work that the girls did in

the summer should go a long waytowards helping them have suc-cess this fall. The idea of playingmostly 2-A and 3-A teams in thepreseason is to push the squad sothat when district rolls aroundthey are ready for the 1-A brack-

et. The idea has worked likeclockwork in the past and thisappears to be a banner year. Hollyfield says, “We get a lot

of good competition. We go totournaments at schools that arebigger than us and we hang withthem. We tend to play hard teamsat the beginning and not worryabout the record.” She continuedon, “I have a very competitivegroup that likes to win. Theyknow we are working on thingsin the preseason, but they stilllike to give their all and try towin. When we drop a match theyare all right with it as long as welose well.” The thing is that Evadale sel

The Silsbee High SchoolTigerettes have just one seniorbut she is one of whom they arevery proud. Sara Fisher is a gregarious

young lady who is confident herteam can achieve something spe-cial this year. “I am looking forward to an

amazing year,” she said. “They(the dancers) are willing girlswho are willing to work togetherand grow as a team.” Unlike many of the girls who

join the team with no danceexperience, Sara had years ofexperience prior to joining theTigerettes. And now she has beenon the squad for four years and isthe captain of the team. During the process she has

earned All-America status threetimes. She has earned the statusin the past for her dance routineand also for her kick routine. This year she qualified in bothroutines. She first became interested in

being a Tigerette while attendingfootball games and watching herfriend’s sister compete with thesquad. There were 600 girls at the

camp and only 10 qualified asAll-Americans. Two of themwere off the 17-member squad atSilsbee High School. Lauren Keubbodeaux, a lieu-

tenant on the squad, also quali-fied as an All-American.Keubbodeaux has two older sis-ters who were Tigerettes, Alishagraduated in 2006 and Regina in

2008. While they were workingon their routines she wouldwatch and see how to do the rou-tines and work went. Now she is one of only two

juniors on the squad, is an All-

American and has a strongknowledge of what she isattempting to learn. “I like that I can trust the team

members and that they havegrown together,“ she said.

She says she like everythingabout the Tigerettes and especial-ly likes Friday nights. She is active in several other

activities at the school. She is inFCCLA and has participated in

There should be three-teamrace for the district championshipis District 21-3A. West Orange-Stark, with four

offensive and eight defensivestarters, seems to be the perenni-al favorite for the championship. The Mustangs have a new

coach who has a familiar face inCornel Thompson. He has beenon the staff for many years andhas a 12-8 record as a coach inother locations.Last year the Mustangs

advanced to the bidistrict roundof Division II before being elim-inated. Thompson has installed a

Multiple-I offense. It will be ledby junior Jimmy Salter who wasthe Offensive Most ValuablePlayer of 21-3A last year. Hecompleted 74 of 131 passes for1,202 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also carried the ball 41 timesfor 160 yards. Senior runningback Britton Lindsey had 105carries for 846 yards and 11touchdowns. The offensive line is led by Ian

The girls then attended linecamp and won two spirit awards. The team now knows about 12

Last year TCU was thestrongest of any school in Texas. They finished last year with aperfect 12-0 record and defeatedWisconsin in the Rose Bowl by a21-19 score which left themranked second in the nationalstandings. This year they may not be as

strong. However, they have fivestarters returning on offense andsix starters returning defense. This will be their final year

before heading to play in the BigEast Conference. Despite the losses to gradua-

tion TCU, will once again have afine defense. They have twodefensive lineman, StanslyMaponga and D.J. Yendreyreturning and all three lineback-ers return. The big drawback forTCU in this area may be that thelinemen are a little small. This team should have a shot

at repeating. Their biggest road-

blocks will be Oct 28 againstBYU and Nov. 12 at Boise State. The University of Houston fin-

ished the 2010 campaign with a5-7 record. They won the westerndivision of Conference USA andshould have the people in placeto show improvement. They haveseven returning starters includingthree wide receivers, a running-back and quarterback CaseKeenum. If the line is rebuilt, theteam figures to rock and rolloffensively. Defensively, theteam returns six starters includethe entire front three. They also have three lineback-

ers returning. The team will haveto find four new defensive backs. The squad opens with UCLA,which will be a test and then allof their other games are easilywinnable. This team could havean impressive record by the endof the season. They are hoping to do well so

that they can impress people incase an opening occurs in the Big12. The Rice Owls finished the

2010 campaign with a 4-8 record. This year on offense they haveseven starters returning plusVance McDonald. McDonald is a graduate of East

Chambers in Winnie. He startedmost of the year at tight end andthen was injured. This year theyhave moved him to wide receiverwhich is amazing. He is 6’5” talland weighs 260 pounds. Thatmakes him a pretty big widereceiver for defensive backs tocover. He may be the best player

on the offensive team.Defensively the squad has

seven players returning. JoshSkinner, a 2009 graduate ofSilsbee High School is second onthe depth chart at defensive end. Rice plays an extremely tough

non-conference schedule whichhurts their overall record. Theteam plays Texas, Purdue, Baylorand Southern Mississippi to startthe season. Later they take onNorthwestern. A win in any ofthose games would indicate realprogress. After that they playtheir Conference USA scheduleand most of these games arewinnable. Houston may be thebiggest challenge in the non-dis-trict schedule. SMU was given the death

penalty, put in the grave andburied many years ago. Theyhave never fully recovered fromthat event. After laying off a fewyears they had to start over andtook on the image of a loser andhave never been able to over-come that stigma. Last year theteam had an impressive 7-7record under Coach June Jones. This year the team has nineoffensive starters and eight

defensive starters returning. This may be the year they put it

all behind them. Offensively they are missing

just one offensive lineman andone wide receiver. Defensivelythey are missing two linebackersand a cornerback. They open the year with Texas

A&M and play TCU on Sept. 30.They should be competitive in allof the other games. UTEP finished the 2010 cam-

paign with a 6-7 record. Thisyear they return one offensivestarter and eight defensivestarters. The team has a relativelyweak non-conference scheduleand should win a few games. They probably will not win manyat the end of the year. The Mean Green from North

Texas picked up a new coachduring the season last year. Theywon only three games and allthree of these were in the Sunbeltconference. This year the squadhas six offensive starters and sixdefensive starters returning.Three wins would probably be asuccessful season for them againthis year.

The Silsbee High School Bandthat has won sweepstakes awardsthe past four years will take thefield this year with one of theyoungest squads in many sea-sons. There are 72 students in the

band under the direction of JohnRoberts and assistant ToddPatterson. In order to be a sweepstakes

band the group must earn a 1 rat-ing in marching, concert andsight reading and the SHS teamhas managed to accomplish thisfeat four straight times. Roberts reports that the band is

now working hard, practicing onthe field south of the school eachmorning from 8 to 11 a.m. andthen returning each afternoon topractice music in the band hall.

He describes this group as veryhard working kids with positiveattitudes. They are very youngand the group has a lot of flutesaxophone and trumpet playersand is a little light at some of theother positions. This year they plan to perform

on the field for a show known asNightwatch. Roberts installs partof the show to open the seasonand continues to add parts as theyear proceeds. By the time themarching competition arrives theshow is fully in place and thewhole show is performed. This year the band will have

two senior drum majors. TimWhitt was a drum major last yearand Mone’t Randolph joins himas one of the leaders of the band. Whitt is the first chair baritone

player and Randolph is the firstchair clarinet player. The drum majors attended a

camp at Stephen F. Austin StateUniversity and also participatedin a two-day leadership camp atSHS. This year’s highlight will take

place during the school term.Last year the band travelled toDisneyworld. The group doesthis every three years. Now, forthe next two years, they will raisemoney for the next trip. One of the big things that peo-

ple can look forward to this year

is that the band will have a newlook. They now have new uni-forms and are working hard tohave them fitted to the personnelin the band. At picture time manyof the pants had still not beentrimmed and stitched for the legsof the new performers. Roberts says that the life of a

band uniform is between 10 and15 years. They have been work-ing on the uniforms for the pastyear. First designs had to be stud-ied and then sketches madewhich were taken to the schoolfor approval. Finally the band

uniforms were ordered. The whole process takes about

a year. Now the uniforms havearrived and the finishing processis underway. Asst. Director Patterson’s wife

Carol will be in charge of thecolor guard. Roberts has been the director at

SHS for the past eight years. Heis confident that this young grouphas a great attitude and that theywill work hard to put a goodshow on the field every week ofthe season.

The Texas Longhorns haveplayed for the national champi-onship twice in the past ten years. Two years ago they were next tothe last team standing. Last year, they fell off the perch and limpedto the end of the season with a 5-7 record. This year the red team from

Oklahoma was one of the pre-season favorites to win thenational championship. A string of injuries and other

problems this summer may have

shaken that prediction. Still, theSooners will be one of the topteams in the country. Texas A&Mmay be the sleeper who stepsforth to win the Big 12 title thisyear. The Aggies have been making

noise about moving to theSoutheast Conference. Last yearit was Nebraska that was leavingand they made a big push to winthe title and take it to the Big 10.Everyone wants to quit with thetitle.

Sooner or later some team willquit, call all the others losers andwalk away with the title. It justmight happen this year. The Aggies have ten starters

returning on offense. Thisincludes the quarterback, all thereceivers and every offensivelineman besides one. In addition, the running back who started forthe Aggies last year, Cyrus Gray, the guy who started the yearbefore but was injured last year, and he has returned to action.

That guy is well known to peoplein this area. It is ChristineMichael of Beaumont. Four of the starters on the

offensive unit are multi-yearstarters. In addition, the kickerand punter return. Defensively, the team has nine starters return-ing on defense. Three of thedefensive starters are multi-yearstarters. The coaching staff certainly

has something to work with. The Aggies leading rusher is

Gray with 1,133 yards. Safety Trent Hunter leads the

defense, but Coryell Judie hadfour interceptions last year whenthe Aggies finished at 9-4. If the Sooners had not had so

many problems this year, theywould have been in almost asgood a shape as the Aggies, witheven better personnel managingthe slots. The Sooners have nine starters

returning on offense, includingquarterback Landry Jones. Everystarter returns except one widereceiver and the running back.Defensively, the Sooners havesix starters returning. The middlelinebacker, Travis Lewis, is amulti-year starter and owns theOklahoma record for career inter-ceptions. There are three multi-year starters on offense.TheSooners are really good. LandryJones completes two-thirds of hispasses and has passed for 38touchdowns and 4,718 yards.Ryan Broyles caught 131 passesfor 1,622 yards. But Sooners are still an

extremely young team. It is hardto improve on 12-2 but theSooners might do it. If they do,they might have an invite to thebig dance. Oklahoma State has nine

returning starters. They are ledby their quarterback, BrandonWeeden, who completed 343passes for 4,277 yards. His leadreceiver is Justin Blackmon, whocaught 111 passes for 1,782yards. Defensively, the Cowboys

have six starters returning. Thestrength of the defense is the sec-ondary, which returns three of thefour starters.

The Cowboys finished the yearlast year at 11-2 and this yearshould be just as good, if not bet-ter. Baylor finished the year last

year with a record of 7-4 and thisyear they have eight startersreturning and five of these aremulti-year starters. The Bears leader is Robert

Griffin III, who would be the topreturning starter in the confer-ence if Landry Jones was not onthe Oklahoma campus.Defensively, five starters returnfor Baylor.Defensively the Bears will not begrowling quiet so much. Theyhave just three starters returningoff of last year’s team.Cornerback Chance Casey andTracy Robertson at defensivetackle are both multi yearstarters. Last year, Texas Tech had a

new coach and a big year . Theyfinished the year at 8-5. TheRaiders have six starters return-ing on offense and three startersreturning on defense. The guesshere is that they will not win asmany games as they did a yearago. The big school in the confer-

ence, Texas, finished the year lastyear with a record of 5-7. Theyhave six starters returning andapparently some of them are notvery good starters. Coach MackBrown has the team in seclusionthis year as they prepare for the2011 campaign. The word leak-ing out of the closed practices arethat he is looking at freshmanDavid Ash as the quarterback. Look for Texas to have a major

makeover. The campus is locatedin the heart of the state that hasthe best high school footballplayers in the nation and annual-ly produces the top backs in thecountry. Still, the team haslimped through several yearswith less than sterling years fromits running back position. Theschool that had feature backs likeEarl Campbell, Steve Wooster,Ricky Williams and many othershas not had a feature back inyears. Don’t be surprised if theyunleash one on everyone thisyear.

With all that said and donelook for Oklahoma to win thesouth division of the Big 12 withA&M being their nearest com-petitor. Texas will spring forth toplace third and put fear in thehearts of A&M. Oklahoma Statewill be fourth, with Baylor fifthand Texas Tech last. Well, that won’t happen

because there is no longer a Big12 South. Nebraska andColorado are gone. The otherfour teams from the Big 12 Northare now a part of the Big 12.Missouri has nine offensive

starters returning and six defen-sive starters returning. Theyshould be given some considera-tion for being in the race for thetitle. Look for Missouri to finishfifth in the ten team field. That isright after Oklahoma, A&M,Texas and Oklahoma State. Kansas State has had good

years and bad years. Last yearthey had a middle year with a 7-6 record. They have six offensiveand seven defensive startersreturning. The Wildcats probablywill be in the middle of the pack.Look for them to claim wins overEastern Kentucky, Kent State,Miami, Kansas and Iowa State. Miami is in bad shape with an

NCAA investigation going onthat figures to be devastating.People are talking about thedeath penalty for the first timesince SMU. Financial backers

paying players for hits on oppo-nents does not set well with theelite in the NCAA. Rumors arethat they could lose as many as12 starters for the year, whichmakes them a candidate for sev-eral unexpected losses. Two con-ference wins will leave K State ineighth place. Kansas finished last year with

a record of 3-9. The have sevenoffensive and eight defensivestarters returning. Wins overMcneese State, Northern Illinois

and Iowa State will leave theJayhawks in ninth place in a tenteam league. This leaves only one team. Iowa State finished last year

with a record of 5-7. They haveonly five staters returning onoffense and seven starters return-ing on defense. The Cyclonesshould open the season with awin over Northern Iowa. Fromthis point on nothing looks good.An eleven loss season is a possi-bility.

easy game in this league, andyou’re not going to outcoachanyone,” said Peveto. “You hadbetter be prepared to get it onevery week. We’ll have ourhands full in every game.“I hate to make my picks in

Mark Murril played in all 11games at Lamar last year as ared-shirt freshman. He enjoyedthe team’s success but views the2010 success in a much differentlight than other people. Now the 6-foot-2, 250-pound

sophomore has a hold on a start-ing position at Lamar and he isgiving every effort to not onlymaintain that position as a start-ing defensive tackle but also tolead the team to a conferencechampionship. He says, “Everyone wants to

do better. No one likes to losegames. We want to do better. Alot of us felt we should have wona couple more games last year ifnot all of them.”For Murrill the highlight of the

season was the McNeese gamethat was Lamar’s first game onthe field after a more than 20 yearlayoff. This year he feels, “Now we

get to play for a ring. We adopteda goal of winning a conferencechampionship and no one willsay anything different. Last year

it was exciting starting a newprogram. This year is different.Everyone is closer this year. Theteam only lost two players andeveryone got a chance to see howwe play and work together. “ His assessment of the presea-

son workout is that all is goingwell. Last year Murrill not only

played in all 11 games as a fresh-man but he seemed to getstronger as the season drew to aclose. He had 20 tackles duringthe season including three forlosses. He recovered a fumble with

fifty seconds to play to preserveLamar’s 29-28 win overSoutheastern Louisiana. Duringthat game he had two tacklesincluding one for a loss. His top game was in the

Cardinals season opener againstWebber International when hehad five tackles. Twice he had four tackles in a

game. These were in a 14-0 winover Langston and in a 44-6 winover Oklahoma Panhandle.

Murrill graduated fromLumberton High School wherehe was a first team All-District20-4A players as a senior and anhonorable mention selection onthe 2008 Class 4A All-Stateteam. He had 50 tackles includ-ing three for sacks and 13 othersfor losses during that senior cam-paign. Murrill is majoring in engi-

neering and is the son of Markand Mary Murrill of Lumberton.

Simply put, LamarUniversity’s team is the RodneyDaingerfield of the SouthlandConference. As the legendary

comedian/actor would have soaptly said it, the Cardinals got norespect in the 2011 PreseasonSLC Polls released Wednesday atthe league’s annual FootballMedia Day. Also, the Cardinalshad no player named to the firstor second-team offensive ordefensive units as voted upon bythe league’s coaches and sportsinformation directors.Coach Ray Woodard’s

Cardinals, who will be compet-ing for the SLC football champi-onship this season for the firsttime since 1986 (Lamar playedas a Division 1-AA independentfor three seasons before droppingthe program after the 1989 sea-son), finished dead last in both ofthe preseason polls, garneringnine points in the coaches’ polland the minimum of eight points

in the SIDs’ poll. In fact, theCards attracted only one seventh-place vote, that being in thecoaches’ poll. This came about despite the

Cardinals compiling a 5-6 recordand setting 15 individual or teamrecords in 2010, their first year tofield a football team since 1989.Among the Cardinals’ victimslast season was SoutheasternLouisiana, 29-28 in Hammond,La., and the Cards also playedthen 11th-ranked McNeese Statedown to the wire in a 30-27 roadloss in their season opener.Southeastern Louisiana, which

Jeremy Johnson, a 2009 gradu-ate of Silsbee High School, willtake the field for the LamarCardinals this fall as one of theteam’s quarterbacks. The journeyfrom high school at a 3A schoolto quarterback at a college likeLamar can be long and tough butit was much longer for Johnsonthan an 18-mile trip toBeaumont. Johnson was one of the top-

rated quarterbacks in the statewhen he graduated and he signeda scholarship to play at WestVirginia University. Once he arrived at WVU he

discovered there was a big differ-ence between high school andcollege and he faced a daily chal-lenge attempting to learn theplaybook and to develop hisskills to be able to play at the col-lege level. He had to get more mentally

involved in the game. He had tochange his style to work on stay-ing in the pocket and getting hisfootwork right. It has been a steady job work-

ing on these details every daysince he hit the college campus. Johnson is quick to say that

West Virginia was challenging tohim. The challenge goes on butJohnson says that now he is usedto it. He did not hit the field his

freshman year and that was fol-lowed by a huge turnover inplayers and coaching at WestVirginia. He decided to leave theschool. He had a chance to attendtwo different universities, Lamarand Baylor.Johnson says he chose Lamar

over Baylor for one reason. AtBaylor he would have had to sitout a year before he could play.He had already sat out one year at

West Virginia and wanted tocompete for a position. He stillhas four years of eligibility. At Lamar the offense runs out

of the Pistol Formation. This isdifferent than in high schoolwhere they ran a spread offense. In the spread the quarterback is

off the line of scrimmage withthe running back to his side. Inthe pistol, the quarterback isdirectly behind the center (undercenter) and the running back isbehind the quarterback. This offense will require the

quarterback to do a little running. Johnson says he cannot tell

whether the offense is gearedtowards a passing attack orgeared towards a running attack. He sees it as being a little of both. From a physical standpoint

Johnson does not see that he haschanged much. He weighs 188pounds and weighed about 180 in

high school. He says he runs a4.35-second 40-yard dash whichis about what he ran in highschool. Johnson says he is real

impressed with the Cardinalsdefense. “They are pretty goodand we practice against themevery day.” The practices usually have the

first team offense battle the firstteam defense and then the secondteam offense battles the secondteam defense. Once the process iscompleted it is then repeated. One thing he sees improving at

Lamar is the line. He says theyget better every day and theyhave had a number of playersmove in who are making thembigger. He transferred to Lamar after

the first semester and has hadsome time to get comfortablewith the playbook and polishing

up on his skills. He indicated thathe has been working and feelsgood about how he is doing.

Individually we are special but together we are spectacular!

Good Luck To All Area Teams!

Have a Great Year in 2011

The Silsbee coaching staff hasknown for a long time that this isgoing to be a pretty good footballtime. Throughout the spring therewas a good group of studentsworking out, lifting weights andpreparing for the season by mak-ing themselves stronger. Thetrend continued throughout thesummer. The thought was reinforced by

the fact that the squad had astrong nucleus returning in theoffensive line. Prior to the start ofpractice coaches knew they hadthree starters returning plus, ahuge move-up from the JV squadwho not only had size but hadathletic ability. From this pointthey were working on improvingthose players skills, filling theone hole at guard and developing

backup personnel for the line. This line is not only experi-

enced, but it is big and athletic. The front liner is Bret Treadway, who has already given a verbalcommitment to LamarUniversity. He is one of thesmaller guys at 6’3” tall and 250pounds. Doc Maricle and ZachRashal have both started for threeyears. Doc started even beforeTreadway. He is in the 275-pound class. Rachal is the littleguy, yet he is a long lanky char-acter who is athletic and weighsmore than 200 pounds. These three seniors were

joined by Michael Davis who isalso a senior and something of alate bloomer. He runs well, and ishuge at 265 pounds. He appearsto be the biggest guy on the line.

All fall Dylan Morgan andKanon Mackey have been bat-tling for a starting spot on at theright tackle position. Morgan is ajunior and appears to have theedge. Mackey is a sophomoreand is the bigger of the two atnearly 240 pounds. Whicheverone of the two end up starting theother is bound to see a lot ofaction. In addition, the team had at

least three starting receiversreturning from last year. KeltonGaines is a tiny speed burner.Darrian Turk is a little bigger andabout as fast. Both of the playersare willing to go inside and catchthe ball. They are a fine tandemon inside slot receivers. GarrettDrake is the backup quarterback. He is also the only returningmember of the starting second-ary. He started a number ofgames last year at a wide receiv-er position. Besides these threeguys Jarrod Holmes did not livein Silsbee during football seasona year ago and he is out for thesport. When he is on the field it ishard to tell the differencebetween him and the two insideslot receivers. Sometimes heappears to be better than they are. Coaches knew they could have

a pretty good offensive unit ifthey could find someone to playthe skill positions of quarterbackand running back. It just hap-pened there were two exception-al talents coming out of the ninthgrade. Both players are biggerthan normal for their position and

both have good to excellentspeed. Patrick Read throws as well as

any sophomore quarterback atSilsbee High School in the past10-12 years. He is about 6’2” andweighs about 180 pounds. He is athreat to throw or run. His bigdisadvantage is that he is youngand sometimes makes bad deci-sions or misses open receivers. Ifhe sees them he has no troublegetting the ball to them. His back-up is Brandon Gore

or Garrett Drake. Gore sees moreaction than Drake because Drakeis busy in other areas but he canget the job done if he is called on.Gore is a short quarterback whocan read the option and is really apretty good runner. In the rightoffense he would be an idealstarter. The three players givecoaches a little depth to count on. Coaches always need depth

and this is especially true if soph-omores are on the field. Floyd Spearman moved up

from the freshman squad to therunning back position. At 190+pounds he has 4.5 speed. He runshard and is steadily improving.Like all sophomores he has anumber of areas he can improveon but the basis is in place for anoutstanding player. He seems tohave a second burst of speedwhen he steps through the lineand he does not fall down easily. Silsbee has not had a big back

with his skills for many years. Spearman is not alone at the

position. Several other playershave been lugging the ball.Coach McGallion singled outYancy Brydson for praise afterthe last scrimmage because of theway he was running hard and hit-ting the holes. A number of otherplayers have been seeing spotaction at the position. Defensively the team is led by

Jacob Keefer. He has been man-ning the position every since thefirst game of his senior year.Coach McGallion says is theonly freshman to ever start hishigh school career as a startersince McGallion came to Silsbeein 1998. When Keefer came ontothe field as a freshman, he was asomewhat small guy for a line-backer but he had an aptitude forthe position. Right off he wascalling plays. Now, as a senior,he has pretty good size. Heweighs 185-190. Nearly any situ-ation that can be thrown at himhas already been thrown at him. His buddy Bryan Adams plays

right beside him. The two seniorsgive the Tigers an outstandinglinebacking corp. At the start of preseason this

was the strength of the defense.Silsbee had only one defensiveback returning (Drake) and twodefensive linemen DavidHolleyfield, a tackle and DustyThibodeaux.

LAMAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW

For Lamar head coach RayWoodard, SouthlandConference Football MediaDay is becoming old hat ashe attended his fourth suchevent Wednesday atL’auberge du lac Hotel andCasino. The day-long event gives

media from across the SouthlandConference the opportunity tomeet and interview each school’shead coach and two selectedplayers. For the Cardinals thisyear, senior defensive end JacodyColeman and senior wide receiv-er Marcus Jackson representedthe school. Both players, as well as

Woodard, are excited aboutLamar’s opportunity to competefor a Southland Conference titleafter spending last season as anindependent in LU’s return tofootball following a 21-seasonhiatus.“We have the whole team com-

ing back and have more depththis year,” said Jackson who led

the Cardinals with eight touch-down catches on 41 receptions in2010. “We believe we can com-pete with the other SouthlandConference teams, and we’revery excited that we can dosomething special this year.”A well-run event hosted by the

Southland Conference, playersand coaches are interviewed bythe Southland ConferenceTelevision Network, other localtelevision stations and assortedprint and radio media.Southland commissioner Tom

Burnett spoke about the value ofLamar’s return to the conference“We are very, very excited to

have the Cardinals back in theconference playing a full sched-ule for the first time since 1986,”said Burnett. “It fill’s a hole thatwe’ve had since Lamar has comeback to the conference.“It’s really gratifying to see

how the university has broughtthe sport back, and made it workwith all this excitement andenthusiasm. Because Lamar fig-ured out how to make it work for

themselves first, now it’s goingto work out great for the wholeconference.”Woodard, Coleman and

Jackson moved from station tostation Wednesday, giving theirrespective opinions as to how theseason may go, what it’s like toplay in front of capacity crowdsat the newly refurbished ProvostUmphrey Stadium and just howtough a conference the SLC is.“This is a great football

league,” commented Woodardafter leading Lamar to a 5-6record in 2010. “We are morefamiliar with the conferenceteams this year after facing fourof them last year, but they will bemuch more familiar with us andwe’re going to have to be evenbetter this year to competeagainst them.“We were 4-2 at home (last

season) playing in front of thelarge crowds,” added Woodard.“Our fans really travelled welland came out to support us, andI’m hoping that excitementgrows and the stadium can geteven more hostile.”Jackson added to those senti-

ments, noting that “the GoldenTriangle is a great place for foot-ball and you can really feel howmuch they love the sport in thearea.”Coleman offered a unique per-

spective at media day, afterspending his first two collegiateseasons playing for theUniversity of Iowa in the Big 10Conference before returning tohis hometown to help theCardinals build a program.“It’s been a great journey to be

playing back at home in front offamily,” said Coleman who was aprep star at West Brook HighSchool. “They didn’t have thechance to see me that often in

Iowa, but now they can be atevery game. It makes me happyto bring football back to Lamarwhere it belongs.”Also announced Wednesday

were the preseason polls and pre-season all-conference teams. TheCardinals, who were not repre-sented on any of the preseasonall-conference squads, were alsoselected eighth by the coaches inthe eight-team league. Of no matter to Woodard who

knows that it’s not where you arepicked to start the season, butrather where you finish the year.

There has been a lot of experi-mentation on the defensive sideof the ball and it continues. Two things established itselve

right off. First, Seth Adams, asophomore showed up and it wasunderstood that he could playwith anyone in the middle of theline. He is Bryan’s younger butbigger brother. He is a littleshorter but weighs about 250pounds and has the strength tomatch. That was obvious last spring

Proud of

100 percent dedicated to schoolspirit and have been working onways to get the crowd to respondand become a part of the game.Their goal all summer has beento develop response cheers. Turk says the crowd will be

impressed and surprised at theefforts the girls have made to getthe crowd involved. There are only seven girls on

the junior varsity squad. Thisgroup includes Vanity Hale,Taylor Roark, Hayley Jones, JadeScott, Darian Haegon and DeliahCoker.

Murrill is majoring in engi-

neering and is the son of Markand Mary Murrill of Lumberton.

easy game in this league, andyou’re not going to outcoachanyone,” said Peveto. “You hadbetter be prepared to get it onevery week. We’ll have ourhands full in every game.“I hate to make my picks in

Band hopes to maintain Sweepstakes TraditionSquad has 72 Players Ready For Action

The Silsbee High School Band Instructors include JohnRoberts (Front), Todd Patterson (Assistant BandDirector and Carol Patterson (Flag Chor Director).

Young. The girls attended officer camp

this year and won three topawards, one each for choreogra-phy, staff and dedication.

The girls then attended linecamp and won two spirit awards. The team now knows about 12

routines. Eight of these will beused in pep rallies and they also

know dances to four songs forthe football games. The team is coached by a

mother daughter squad. JennyChandler, the daughter teachesspecial ed and is the head coach. The mother, Cynthia Chandler, has been teacher and coach ofdifferent activities for 35 years. She taught dance at Liberty formany years and then moved toLumberton were she was a dramainstructor for 14 years. She saysshe has been in Silsbee and lov-ing it for the past four years. Sheteaches English at SHS andassists her daughter with the drillteam. Jenny started out as a speech

teacher but now teaches specialeducation. She says she always wanted to

be a drill team instructor. Sheparticipated in the drill team atLumberton High School for twoyears and then got into otheractivities. She was one of the edi-tors of the yearbook and servedas mascot one year. After attending college at

McMurray University in Abilene

she came back to SoutheastTexas and went to work for achurch until she could get a jobas a paraprofessional and get herfoot in the door as a teacher. She also views this group as a

strong one. “I think that this teamis the most dedicated and willinggroup to learn and be the best thatthey can be,” she said. “Theyknow how to work and how to

play hard. They are fun to workwith.” Both instructors say they

believe in a traditional drill teamapproach that stresses pom rou-tines, kick routines, hip hop rou-tines and jazz routines. They usethe hip hop routines at the peprallies. They take their girls to the

There should be three-teamrace for the district championshipis District 21-3A. West Orange-Stark, with four

advanced to the bidistrict roundof Division II before being elim-inated.

Jenkins, Dylan Brackens, RyanAllen, Terrance Dennis andMatthew Lackey. The team runs a 50 defense and

is known as the Chain Gang. Ithas eight starters returning. Thedefense is headed by 21-3ANewcomer of the Year Joe Lynchwho plays linebacker and noseguard, Lawrence Gimore, andlinebacker Daniel Woodson. Thesecondary is headed by TaywaunLucas.

Bobby McGallion who has arecord of 69-72 in Silsbee and142-106-3 overall. His teams runa Spread offense and a 3-4defense.Bridge City has seven offen-

sive and eight defensive startersreturning off a 7-4 squad that wasa Division II Bidistrict finalist. This team is powered by quar-

terback Matt Menard, a 6-1, 205-pound powerhouse who passedfor 1,450 yards and 15 touch-downs last year. He also rushedthe ball 1,050 yards and 18touchdowns. Cameron Dishon,Tyler Roberts and MitchellHubbard return at the receiverpositions. If any of the top three teams

slip up, the Orangefield Bobcatswill be ready to step into thelimelight and the playoff picture. Brian Huckabay coached this

squad to a 7-3 record and he hashopes they will take the nextstep. Huckabay will be enteringhis third season at Orangfield. Heis an experienced coach with anoverall record of 99-99-3. The Bobcats have four offen-

sive and seven defensive startersreturning from last year’s team. The team runs a Wing-T offen-

sive set. The offense is led byRylan Cook who had 42 carriesfor 279 yards and four touch-downs in 2010 and JustinBradley who had 10 carries for

63 yards. The Bobcats defense is led by

Jake Best, a second team all-dis-trict pick. The linebackers wouldbe led by senior Jeremy Watkinsand the secondary will be strongwith Cook, a second team all-dis-trict pick, and Eric Truncate.Hamshire-Fannett has strug-

gled on the gridiron in recentyears but they may be ready tochallenge in some games thisyear. Coach Don Price, who has an

Smith who completed 51 of 124passes for 516 yards and fourtouchdowns. His top receiver,Trevor Bell, caught 37 passes for448 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively the team runs a 3-

4 scheme and will have seven

starters returning. Their strengthis in their linebacker corps whereSam Huff, Tanner McInnis andJarrod Brown all return. Hardin-Jefferson finished last

year with a 2-8 record. Theywere 1-5 in district. This year the team has 14

starters returning off the 2010squad. Coach David Martel hasan overall record of 19-40. The team will run a Multiple

returning from last year, TonyHart and D.J. Foster. Both of therunners went to regionals andhave a lot of experience. There are two new runners on

more kids will report out at thestart of school but the ones whohave been running at 7:30 everymorning have an advantage overthem. At the present time there is one
