bee HeadVolleyball CoachLindsay Leach and herLady Tigers team for the2012 season.Silsbee is looking to re-

gain its district champi-onship form from last

season after the loss ofeight seniors to graduation.“We have a good group

this season that are willingto work hard,” said Leach.“They are self-motivatedand seem to mesh wellwith one another. But weare lacking in experiencewith no proven leaders.”The Lady Tigers lost five

of their eight seniors thatsaw ample floor time in its2011 District 21-3A cham-pionship year beforefalling in the area round of

the playoffs.This season, 10 return to

varsity with little or no ex-perience in starting rolesincluding four that did seesome play time in the 2011season.One player that Leach is

relying on heavily to be acatalyst of the team will besenior middle blocker ErinWatson. She is listed at 6-4and poses a threat in themiddle for any given team.“She has all the right

tools to be a great player,”said Leach. “Obviously, itwill be intimidating forother teams to see her walkout on the floor. She is thetype of player that can be aleader by example and weare hoping to get that fromher.”Senior Ashley Waters

will also be an integral partof the team this season.The 5-11 senior hasenough talent all over thecourt and is listed as a util-ity player but is talented asa setter.Other seniors expected

High School Band aregearing up for a fun andexcitement filled schoolyear. Patterson is returningfor his ninth year as banddirector and prepared tolead the group through anamazing year.The theme this year is

“Shades of Latin”, and theband will carry this themeto the UIL marching con-test in October, that willtake place at Port NechesGroves stadium. The“Shades of Latin” themewill boast upbeat numbers

as well as music with aclassic Latin feel.The band is welcoming

22 new freshmen for a totalof 68 band members.Drum majors HannahHayes and Autumn Whitewill lead the band. TheSilsbee Tiger Flag Corpswill also be on hand to sup-port and march with theband.Patterson stated that the

band grew slightly thisyear and hopes that thiswill be a continuing trendover the years to come.

Patterson, who is moreaffectionately known oncampus as “The MusicMan”, is looking forwardto helping the band growand develop.Band members attended

summer training in prepa-ration for the upcomingseason and while the heatwas as always an issue,students fared well and theexcitement of a new seasonoutweighed the negativesof the heat.Students, teachers and

Drill Team is ready to startthe 2012-13 football sea-son with a bang.Director Jenny Chandler,

who with her mother, Cyn-thia, have directed the teamfor the past four years. Butthis year, Jenny will begoing at it without her part-ner in crime as her motherhas retired to enjoy being agrandmother.This does not deter

Chandler at all and she isfull of excitement for theupcoming season.The 2012-13 Tigerettes

are made up of 19 girls,

and of those, 10 are fresh-men. "We have a younggroup and they are full ofenergy," Chandler com-mented.Officers for the 2012-13

school year are senior,Captain Lauren Kue-bodeaux, First LieutenantWhitney Hayes, a junior,Second Lieutenant TiffanyMarcental, a junior andSergeant Alexis Porzadek,also a junior.Helping the officers are

managers Shelby Hogan,Beth Young, EmileaSwearingen and LainEason. Managers provide asupport system for theteam and help keep thingsorganized by keeping up

the costume closet, manag-ing music and helping thegirls stay organized.The Tigerettes attended

the HTE Dance Camp inRichardson this past Junefor four days and tookhome three of the fourawards given. The HTEDance Camp is designeddifferently from othercamps. It is a spirit andcharacter building camp.Where some camps con-centrate solely on compet-itive performances, HTEfocuses on building char-acter and well roundedladies. "Instead of whodances the best, they lookfor the kind hearts," Chan-dler stated.The girls also had the

honor of learning a hip hoproutine from renowneddance instructor AdeObayomi, who came tofame as a finalist on thepopular dance show, “SoYou Think You CanDance.”The girls learned 12

dances over the four daystay at camp and also

learned a new field routinethat will employ woodenboxes as props.Two Tigerettes earned

the honor of being in-ducted into "The Acad-emy", an elite group ofladies who will have thechance to perform inHawaii over Spring Break.Lauren Kuebodeaux andTiffanyMarcental earned aplace in Kick Academyand Marcental also earneda spot in Dance Academy.The team will be selling

Silsbee Tigers FootballSignature Shirts on the firstday of school through thefirst three weeks as afundraiser and will alsohold a fall dance clinic.The dance clinic is forkindergarten througheighth grade and will takeplace on Saturday, Septem-ber 15.Chandler and the

Tigerettes are looking for-ward to the upcoming sea-son and promise that it willbe an energy filled, funseason.

Mustangs continue to bethe team to beat in District21-3A and rightfully sowhen their defense stars onany given evening.But the Silsbee Tigers

bask in the shadows of theMustangs and look toupend the 2011 districtchampions this season withits high-powered offense.The championship could

come down to the onegame when these twoteams meet in what will beone good defense againstone good offense. Butthanks to the biennial re-alignment, all the teams in21-3A will have to gothrough one more teamadded – Buna moves upfrom class 2A into the dis-trict.West Orange-Stark is

coming off of a 10-4 DIIregional finals appearanceafter going 5-0 in districtplay.TheMustangs return five

offensive and seven defen-sive starters on an alreadyloaded team.The core of the team re-

turns for the Mustangs in-cluding highly regardeddefensive linemen DETrayvon Blanchard (6-3,180) and DT JerquisBeasley (6-0, 260). Alsoreturning defensively areLB Daniel Woodson (6-0,210), DB Ar’Tevin Mc-Donald, CB Joe Lynch,DB Abear Simien and DBQuenton Tezeno.Offensively, the Mus-

tangs return QB JimmySalter, TE JamarcusRhodes (6-3, 175), WR

Dre’ Spencer (6-0, 160)and WR Rashon McDon-ald.The Mustangs continue

to improve each seasonunder Head Coach CornelThompson.The Silsbee Tigers will

give it their all againstWO-S in hopes of dethron-ing the power this season.The Tigers have all the

tools to do just that and theseason could get interest-ing barring any major in-juries to a Silsbee team thatlacks depth.Silbee finished the 2011

season with an 8-3 recordand reached the DI bidis-trict round of the playoffswhere they were knockedoff by Huffman-Hargrave.The team returns six on

offense and five on defensein a group that could be asolid contender for the topspot.The top two skill players

return from last season in-cluding QB Patrick Reedand RB Floyd Spearman.OL Kanon Mackey willprovide blocking. Defen-sively, the Tigers look toDLSethAdams, LB DustyThibodeaux and LBAdamValencia to carry the load.What’s better for Silsbee

Head Coach Bobby Mc-Gallion is that if Silsbeedoes make the playoffs,they will enter DI andwon’t have to face LaMar-

que, who would be goingDII.The Bridge City Cardi-

nals will be another con-tender in the district andcould be the sleeper tosneak up on Silsbee andWO-S.The Cardinals return two

on offense and three on de-fense but still look to be acontender for the playoffsafter finishing 8-3 last sea-son and reached the bidis-trict playoffs in DII.Returning on defense is

LB Zach Cole (5-10, 222)and CB Tanner Cervenka.On offense, it will be RBAshton Hunter (6-0, 185)and OL Josh Blanchard.No pushover of the dis-

trict will be Orangefield,who could be a spoiler.The Bobcats return five

on offense and four on de-fense from a team that fin-ished 5-5 overall and 2-3 indistrict play.Orangefield is now

under Josh Smalley, whowas offensive coordinatorat Bridge City prior to hisnew head coaching posi-tion.The Bobcats will ride the

back of RB Carl Wiley (6-0, 170) who will get openby the blocking of TEMason Sonnier (6-4, 215).Defense will be DB Eric

district will be Buna mov-ing up from the 2A ranks.The Cougars finished the

2011 season with a 7-3record including a 4-3 fin-ish in district, class 2A-DI.Buna returns six on of-

of the game for theCougars led by DL BryceTippet (6-3, 235), DEChris Champion (6-0,215), S Glenn Patrick andLB Dalton Ford.Offensively, Buna will

uation that may have hithard, but the mindset tosome talented players re-turning is that there is someunfinished business.Silsbee enters the 2012

season with some high ex-pectations for a team thatwas eliminated from thebidistrict round of the play-offs in 2011 by Huffman-Hargrave.“Our kids have been

practicing hard and prepar-ing to win,” said HeadCoach Bobby McGallion.“We try not to get ahead ofourselves and will playfromwhistle to whistle.Wedo have some personal

goals but right now, wefocus on getting comfort-able with what we can doas a team.”Silsbee managed to earn

a spot in the playoffs lastseason despite an unortho-dox loss to Bridge City 6-0and then falling to eventualdistrict champions WestOrange-Stark 24-13.The Tigers finished 2011

with an 8-3 record andenter a new season withfour skill positions back ofthe six returning on the of-fensive side of the ball.Though the Tigers bank

on a swarming defense, of-fense will provide plenty offirepower with the returnof two juniors QB PatrickReed (6-2, 180) and RBFloyd Spearman (6-2,180).Though Reed only

played seven games in2011 as a starting sopho-more due to injuries, thequarterback still managed

a good statistical yeargoing 59 of 124 for 852yards with eight intercep-tions and seven TDs.RB Floyd also returns

after a season ending ACLinjury to close out the sea-son and finished the 2011campaign with 134 rushesfor 783 yards and nineTDs.

Reed will have reliablehands returning with seniorWR Jordan Holmes (6-0,175) who finished last sea-son with 15 catches for 310yards and two TDs, andwill play on both sides ofthe ball as a cornerback.Also, seniorWR LaDavianBarnes (6-0, 175) returns.Two players will also get

quality snaps in Silsbee’sspread offense includingWR Zayon Jackson andWR Kendrick Scott.On the offensive line, the

Tigers return senior C RossGilchriest (5-8, 190) andjunior RT Kanon Mackey(6-4, 250).McGallion is working on

finding guards to fill withtwo battling for position.Two starters will be namedwhen the season begins.Returning on defense

will be senior DB Coy Bird(5-7, 160) and CB Holmesin the backfield.

Joining themwill be sen-ior CBMontana Garcia (6-0, 180), who will also seetime at wide receiver. FSJordan Gore (6-0, 170) willalso see playing time.Returning leaders on de-

at a time,” said McGallion.“We have Orangefield andHamshire-Fannett that cansneak up on you on any

given night. This isn’t aneasy district where teamsroll over and quit.”Silsbee is counting on

stingy defense to get thejob done and swarm to theball.The Tigers non-district

schedule won’t be easy andcould be the catalyst onhow the season will go,barring injuries.Preseason polls pick the

Tigers to finish in secondplace behind WO-S, butSilsbee feels like it is any-ones game.“If we can take care of

the games through the sea-son, anyone can be districtchampions,” said McGal-lion. “We know who willbe the tough games andwe’ll deal with them whenit comes time. For now, weconcentrate on getting theseason underway and play-ing each game.”

After missing 21 yearsfrom the college footballscene, the Lamar Cardinalshave fielded a team for twoyears and appear to be onthe way to fielding a com-petitive squad. Last yearthe team was 4-7 and 2-5in conference play. Thisyear they return 14 starters.They have a new defen-

sive coordinator in BillBradley who was a schoolboy hero at Palestine HighSchool and later gainedfame at the University ofTexas and in the NFL. Heplayed in 114 NFL games

and holds career recordsfor interception returnyardage at Philadelphiawith 536 and single seasonrecords for interceptionsand return yardage.The squad will also have

a new offensive coordina-tor in Larry Kueck.Though none of the playerscan remember it because itwas before they were born,he served as the quarter-back coach and offensivecoordinator at Lamar from1986-89.During the time he was

at Lamar the school had

the most prolific passingnumbers that it has had inhistory.This year he will have a

couple of good youngquarterbacks to work within Ryan Mossakowski andCaleb Berry.The team will operate

out of multiple sets but willprimarily be a pro style of-fense. It will have a lot ofmovement.

Defensively the squadhas moved to a 3-4 de-fense, which CoachWoodard says fits theteam’s style.

nucleus with 14 returningstarters. These were bol-stered by a number of latetransfers including a groupof four who transferredfrom the Oklahoma Statesquad that finished 2011 at12-1 and ranked in the topthree in the country.Possibly the area of

biggest improvement couldbe the running back posi-tion. Last year the runningback position seemed to bein good hands when De-Pauldrick Garrett trans-ferred in to bolster theposition. He gained 105yards in his first game, twoweeks later his season wasover when he suffered ashoulder injury. This yearhe is back and looks big-ger.Teammate Mike Vinson

has more experience andthe group has the addedbenefit of three newcom-ers. Herschel Sims is oneof the transfers from OSU.Desmond Richards was anall state players at Magno-lia High School whorushed for 2437 yards andscored 31 touchdowns.Darrell Harris was an allstate selection who rushedfor 2592 and scored 24times for Waco HighSchool.Last week they suffered

a blow when AnthonyBeard, a starting linebackerfrom Lumberton injured aknee and is expected to beout for the season. This isthe second time he has in-jured the knee.

Joshua James graduatedfrom Silsbee High Schoolin 2009. He played hisfinal game during the arearound loss to Navasota thatwas played at Huntsville.He was a little under-

sized for a college playerbut had an ethic of hittingthat not only jarred oppo-nents but impressedcoaches.

When his high schoolcoach Craig McGalliontook a job at Lamar, he de-cided to attend Lamar Uni-versity. He hadexperienced a lot of suc-cess in high school He wasa two time second team alldistrict player and madefirst team all area as well asfirst team all district hissenior year. He had over250 tackles and nine inter-ceptions. In addition heparticipated in power lift-

ing and track.At Lamar, he played in

the Cards' last two gamesof the season during hisfreshman year. He had apair of tackles in Lamar'sseason ending 44-6 winover Oklahoma PanhandleState. One of the tackleswas for a loss.Then he red shirted and

began to put on someweight.

He is now up to 5-10,195 pounds.His position has moved.

He is now listed as a line-backer and expects to playsome on the inside and out-side.Though he is small for a

linebacker, he is a hard hit-ter and likes to blitz a lot.

Because of his aggres-sive style of play he hasfound himself a spot on thekickoff and punt teams.

James is a non-scholar-ship player. He plays be-cause he loves the gameand he is working to earnhimself a spot.

To him college defen-sive players are bigger andfaster guys than they werein high school. The playbook is more challengingand he views college foot-

ball as a full time job.He now has set himself

a goal to help the teamwin.James says, "During thelast three years no oneknew who I was. I wantpeople to know I am hereand important to thisteam."James now has three

teammates on the teamwho also graduated fromSilsbee High School. Hebrought up the subject thatthe freshman are verystrong and they will be realgood. He singled out DavidHollyfield as a player thatfans could expect to seedoing good things on thefield.James is the son of

William James and LatrelJackson. He has onebrother and five sisters. Heis majoring in kinesiology.

James playing for love of the game

Kyle Gillam is some-thing special at Lamar.Last year he was by far

the smallest starter on theCardinals offensive line.Now after starting 22

straight games he is the an-chor and leader of the line.As a redshirt freshman hestarted all 11 games andplayed all but three playsfor the Cards. Last year theCards had a few one sidedgames and he sat out a fewseries.He played last year with

some really big playerswho transferred in but didnot pan out. He consis-tently graded out the best.He graded out over 90 per-cent.

Today the 2-year letter-man has put on somepounds. After starting col-lege at only 235 pounds hehas bulked up to 285. He

has the look of a muchmore mature athlete.At the time he entered

college his primary choiceswere West Point andLamar. For him thingsworked out to go to Lamar.He seems pleased with thatchoice. His parents can at-tend the games and he is apart of a team that issteadily developing.His goal this year is to

win "as many games aspossible and in the end towin a championship."He has had the opportu-

nity to play with a lot ofguys from his high school,Lumberton High School.This year Mark Murrill,Jessee Sparks, AnthonyBeard, and Jacob Hannaare all on the team.There are four more

players from just up theroad in Silsbee who arefighting for a seat on theplane to go on a road trip toHawaii.This year the team has a

new quarterback, a new of-fensive coordinator, and anew offense that is very

complex. He says the teamhas been spending a lot oftime in the film room.Coaches have been spend-ing a lot of time explaininghow the offense works.He views the offense as

tough and still in the build-ing stage. He also sees theoffensive line as youngerbut potentially a lot better.He quickly goes through

the depth chart, startingwith Justin Brock, a redshirt freshman at lefttackle. Sean Robertson atright guard. He will assureyou that he is happier withthe situation than a yearago.Last year the team had to

deal with a lot of injuriesand some outside prob-lems.While they had somebig guys, the line was re-ally kind of small.Though Gillam is the

big man on the Lamarcampus, he has taken thetime to watch some of theyounger guys at work andhad words of praise forBrett Treadway of Silsbee.He noted that Treadwaywas one of the strongestguys and that he waspleased with the Silsbeeguys. He also said, "Youcan expect to see Holly-field on the field. He andTreadway are two of thestrongest guys."Overall Gillam says,

"This is our third year. Wehave experience." He wenton to say that he feels theywill be much better thisyear.Gillam is looking for a

championship kind of year.He is the son of Kevin

Gillam and Nancy BorneHe is majoring in humanresources management.

The 2012-13 SilsbeeTiger Cheerleaders aregeared up for a memorableseason. Just as fans fill thestands to watch a Tigergame, they also fill thestands to watch and takepart in the excitement ofsupporting their hometeam along with the cheer-leaders.Cheerleaders have be-

come an integral part of thefootball season and allowfans the opportunity to takepart in the excitement, andthe Tiger cheerleaders areno different. Whether it bepumping up the crowdwith the fight song orhanding out spirit items,the cheerleaders are alongthe sidelines, passing outsupport and spirit to drivethe players on to victory.Teshauna Turk will lead

the girls for the 2012-13season. Turk, a teacher, isreturning for her tenth yearas cheerleading directorand says her girls are moreexcited and dedicated thanever.The varsity squad has

twelve members and thejunior varsity has sevenmembers, with some whohave been named "AllAmerican Cheerleader" bythe National CheerleaderAssosciation.Natalie Turk and Kailey

Colvin will serve as cap-tain and co-captain of thevarsity squad. Both areseniors this year and havecheered with the Tigers inprevious seasons. Bothgirls will bring experienceand leadership to the team.The varsity and junior

varsity cheerleaders havebeen working hard to pre-pare for the upcoming sea-son. Both attended camp

over the summer and havebeen practicing their rou-tines over the past coupleof weeks. Turk stated thatfans will be both surprisedand pleased with theprogress the girls havemade over the summer.The varsity cheerleaders

are planning to host a cheercamp for younger girls.The camp will allow futureTiger cheerleaders the op-portunity to learn a routineand perform it with the var-sity cheerleaders at a laterdate. They will also be sell-ing the 2012-13 SilsbeeTiger Signature Shirts dur-ing the first three weeks ofschool to help withfundraising. The shirts willhave the signatures of allcheer, drill team and foot-ball players, as well asother athletics.It takes dedication and

self discipline to be a suc-cessful Tiger cheerleader.

coached at several areaschools, and had his lasthead coaching position atChester, has taken the ap-proach that all of the posi-

tions are wide open.He is watching the play-

The Kountze HighSchool Band has a tradi-tion of excellence and thisyear they have 53 musi-cians in grades ninethrough 12 to attempt toearn another Sweepstakesaward.

This year the band willbe under the direction ofdrum major Alexus Flow-ers.In addition to being the

Drum Major, the senioralso serves as the base linecaptain of the drum line.

The band has two assis-

tant drum majors. Both ofthese musicians are jun-iors. The pair includes JoeySchoenfeld and MeganWest.

West is the captain ofthe flag corpse, which hasfive performers.

Meagan Tantillo is theband captain.

This year the band willbe performing a show thatthey call "Fire and Ice".Band Director Bobby

Fife says that the music ischaracterized by songssuch as "Fire and Brim-

stone", "Ukrainian BellCarol", "Icycles" , and"Firebird".The band began working

on the show during thesummer and it is antici-pated that at approximatelyhalf of the music will be inplace by the time the firstshow takes the field.

The band is unique be-cause it appears on thefield in a variety of uni-forms. It includes one vol-leyball player, acheerleader, three drillteam member, and half a

dozen football players.Fife says that the con-

flict is no problem.The band director is

proud of the variety andquickly assures you thatthe variety is not a prob-lem. Sometimes the varietyof activities that they par-ticipate in draws themaway from the band, butFife says, "they are worththe problems."

As a group the band hasa one of the most positiveattitudes of any group thathe has taught in years.

The band is actuallyvery young. Of the 53members there are lessthan half a dozen seniors.The oldest group in the

band is the drum line.Fife, who is in his 15th

year as band instructor,will be assisted by BradLong, who is in his 11th

year. Brent Gibson joinsthe staff as the new percus-sion instructor. He came toKountze from Bridge City.

Courtney Courts is thecolor guard instructor. Sheworks part time at theschool.

The Newton Eagles arethe team to beat year in andyear out in 10-2ADivisionI. This year promises to beno different, but there is noshortage of challengers forthe Eagles.Coach W.T. Johnson has

seven offensive and sevendefensive lettermen return-ing off a team that finisheddistrict play at 6-1 andwent far enough in theplayoffs to be an area final-ist.The Eagles are led by

quarterback D. J. Dean,who passed for nearly1,300 yards and rushed for672. He is also one of theteams best defenders and issure to be a recruit that col-lege coaches will be look-ing at closely. In addition,Kevin Shorter carried theball for 1,250 yards andBrandon Johnson pickedup over 1,000.The squad appears ready

to compete far into theplayoffs this year, how-ever, they did struggle andshow some weak spots intheir season openingscrimmage against Sils-bee.East Chambers would

appear to be the primarychallenger. They have fiveoffensive and five defen-sive starters returning off ateam that went undefeatedin district play and was aregional finalist last year.They are led by all-state

running back GlennRoberts, who rushed for2,027 yards and had 28touchdowns. He also had252 yards receiving.East Chambers has de-

veloped into being a tradi-tional power in the district.The school has good num-bers and Coach RussSutherland has a deep

squad with 16 returninglettermen.This year Kirbyville re-

turns to Class AA. Theymade it to the state finalsduring their last two yearsin AA but then a move toAAA was a turn for theworse. Last year, with newcoaching and a shortage ofplayers, the wheels cameoff.After years of making

deep runs in the playoffs,Kirbyville finished the sea-son with a record of 2-9.Because the district theywere in was weak, theywere able to squeeze intothe playoffs after finishingwith a 2-2 record in districtplay. The playoff driveended soon.

Coach Greg Neeceshould have an opportunityto regroup this year. Thesquad will be at least com-petitive and could easilysqueeze into the playoffs.They do have size with

a line led by Jacob Keene,a 6-5, 275 pound linemanand some skill players withQuinton Jacko at wide re-ceiver and runningbackRed Haywood who gained833 yards on the groundand 373 through the air.The Wildcats defense is

led by Harold Brooks.Most of the teams in this

district have the potentialto challenge for a playoffspot.None of the teams have

more athletic ability thanthe Kountze Lions. TheLions have solid numbersout with over 85 playerslooking for a spot on thevarsity. They have speedand size. They have a newcoach.Kountze always seems to

have a new coach. Part ofthis may be the frustration

that coaches go through atKHS. Year after year theschool is dominant at bas-ketball and competitive inother sports but struggleson the grid iron.

New coach TraceyFranklin will attempt tobreak the pattern. He hasthree offensive and five de-fensive starters returningoff a team that finishedplay in 2011 with a recordof 3-7 and was 1-9 in dis-trict play. However, theycould have easily won anumber of more games.Offensively they are led

by Earnest Hafford andhave good receivers inDarrion Harper and Jamaz-don Powell.

coached by Steve Fentresshave five offensive andfour defensive starters re-turning off a 5-6 team thatwas a bi-district finalist lastyear. The Eagles finisheddistrict play at 4-6.The strength of the team

is the defense led by line-backer Marcus Harrison,defensive end Felix John-son and defensive backsT.C. Mitchell and Phillipnoble. This group couldalso challenge for a playoffposition.The Anahuac Panthers

have a new coach in MartyMurr and have eight offen-sive and seven defensivestarters returning. Thisshould be a good nucleusto challenge for the play-offs. They have a solid run-ning back in Justin Artiswho is over 200 poundsand gained over 1,000yards. Quarterback WyattRaymond started twogames last year and shouldbe ready for full time duty.The Panthers real chal-

lenge will be to regroupafter losing coach DarrellBarbay.The Warren Warriors

have eight offensive andeight defensive starters re-turning off a squad that didnot win last year. The teamis led by quarterbackKolton Perfect and widereceiver Bryce Glosson. Tohave success, the team willhave to show a lot of im-provement.

The Hardin Hornets haveseven offensive and ninedefensive players returningoff a team that finishedplay in 2011 with a recordof 3-7. Like a lot of teamsin this district the Hornetswill be trying out a newcoach.On paper the strength of

this team is its size. Theclub has a group of hugelineman led by DustenCollins (290) and CoreyMettlen, (330). If they playas big as they are the teamcould be a problem for op-ponents.At the end of the season

expect to see the standingsled by Newton and then inorder; East Chambers, Kir-byvllle, Kountze, Wood-ville,Anahuac, Hardin andWarren.

departed to the SEC, forwhat they call “bigger andbetter things,” Texas andOklahoma look for morecompetition to fill the gapsleft behind in the strug-gling Big 12.The Texas Longhorns

will continue to makestrides and could get betterfrom its 8-5 (4-5 Big 12)mark from last season.After taking a 4-0 start to

the 2011 season, the Long-horns looked poised for achance at the Big 12 titleuntil a crushing by Okla-homa 55-17 that set thetone for the rest of the sea-son.The Horns return eight

offensive starters and sixdefensive starters.Quarterback has been the

question mark for theHorns all of last season andentering spring, that ques-tion still remained.Texas Head CoachMack

Brown continues to utilizeboth returnering quarter-backs DavidAsh (6-3, 222,so.) and Case McCoy (6-2,200, jr.) until one signifi-cantly grows better.But until then, the Long-

horns will also need help inthe wide receiver position.Running backs will be

Realignment did no fa-vors for the EvadaleRebels. For several yearsthey have dominated theirdistrict. Even though theyplay in the smallest elevenman conference, they man-aged to win 16 games inthe past two years and fin-ished play last year with arecord of 6-5.This year they will have

to prove their worth to winthe district championship.They have been placed

in a district that includesTenaha, the defendingState Champions of Class1ADivision II. The TenahaTigers were 14-0 last year.

Joining the group is theMount Enterprise Wild-cats. This team finishedlast season at 11-2 and lostto Tenaha in the Regionalfinals.The other two teams in

the district are theBurkevlle Mustangs andthe Sabine Pass Sharks.

Coach Mark Williamshas plenty of weapons toenter the season. He hasfive starters returning onoffense and five on de-fense.

Offensively Williamsson, Wes Williams leadsthe way. The 5-10, 175pound senior has experi-

ence and should provideleadership for the team.

One of his primary tar-gets is Matthew Tottenwho is the only two waystarter returning on theteam. He played wide re-ceiver and defensive backlast year.

In addition, the squadhas a pair of offensive line-men returning in BraidenBurford, and 5-10, 230punt Matthew Akridge.The starter at tight end in2011 Hunter Jackson isalso returning.

The Evadale LadyRebels opened what theyanticipate will be anotherchampionship season witha 3-1 win over Newton.Coach Debbie Holly-

field has developed a tradi-tion of excellence on theEvadale campus.Last year the team went

all the way to the arearound of the playoffs be-fore losing to an Iola teamthat played to the champi-onship game.That team finished dis-trict play undefeated andwon a district champi-onship. This year theyhope to repeat. Hollyfieldsays the team is not asstrong offensively as lastyour but they have moreleadership and more gameexperience. She went on todeclare that this team wasloaded with seniors.She says most of the

players have played to-gether since junior highand they are totally teamoriented.The group includes twogirls who make up the mid-dle blocker combo that are

Alvin Credeur is hopingthings will turn aroundquickly in 2012 and withsix returning starters in-cluding four on offense,things may be moving in

the right direction.“We’re looking to im-

prove for sure,” said Cre-deur. “We’ve made someadjustments in schemes tofit some positions better.We are looking for biggerand better things.”Two wide receivers re-

turn for the LumbertonRaiders including TaylorTrahan (6-0, 150) and Gar-rett Bourque (5-8, 150).Fullback Edmund Horn

(5-9, 205) returns alongwith OG Zach Burkhalter(6-0, 215).On the defensive side of

the ball, SS Brice Carroll

(5-8, 160) and FS CodyKoch (5-9, 150) return.The Raiders will have

their hands full in District20-4Awith top teams Ned-erland, Vidor, Port Neches-Groves and BeaumontOzen.Nederaland is entering

the 2012 season with a12th place preseason rank-ing while Vidor returns ahost of players to makethem legitimate contendersas well in the district.Running out of the I-for-

mation, the Raiders will betrying to fill the quarter-back position with four

vying for the position.“There are no weak

teams in this district,” saidCredeur. “Our goal is to getbetter each game in ournon-district schedule. Bydistrict, we will be able tocompete with those experi-enced teams by then.”The Raiders will open up

the season with GooseCreek Memorial on Thurs-day, Aug. 30. Their re-maining non-districtschedule includes BarbersHill and Silsbee.

has had the reputation ofbeing the toughest districtin Southeast Texas. At thesame time the Class 1A di-vision II district has usu-ally been the softest.This year the 2A district

is still tough but 11-1ADi-vision II took a giant jumpforward and it can layclaim to being the toughestdistrict in Southeast Texas.The Tenaha Tigers, with

six offensive and seven de-fensive starters returningoff a 14-0 squad that wonthe State Championshiplast year, have to be the fa-vorite to win the district.They are probably the fa-vorites to win the 2012state championship title.Tenaha has a running

back returning who carriedthe ball 155 times for 1,409yards and 17 touchdowns,and another who picked upover 600 rushing yards.The offensive juggernaut

averaged 56.6 points pergame last year.The Mount Enterprise

Wildcats finished last yearwith two losses. Both ofthem were to Tenaha. Theylost to the Tigers in the re-gional finals.The Wildcats squad has

six offensive and six de-fensive starters returningoff the 2011 squad.One of the starters, full-

back HunterAmmons, a 5-10, 175 pound runnercarried the ball last year313 times for 2,543 yards.The Evadale Rebels won

a district championship in2011 and finished the yearwith a 6-5 record.They have a solid corpse

of players and a veterancoaching staff to design agame plan to force theirhighly thought of oppo-nents to stumble.

In addition, theBurkeville Mustangs havewon state championships.

Last year they were bi-dis-trict finalist and they haveseven offensive and six de-fensive starters returningoff that club.This squad has two big

backs and a history of pro-ducing top notch runners.

Sabine Pass is the un-known quantity in the dis-trict. They are a part of thePort Arthur school system,and while it appears thatthey don't have the talent tocompete with the otherfour schools, they oftenhave individuals of highquality who play for them.In recent years they havebeen showing improve-ment and could be ready totake a step ahead.This point before the

games start counting,Tenaha has to be the fa-vorite with Mount Enter-prise second, followed byEvadale and Burkeville.

at the Friday night footballgames are a chance to graba bite to eat and visit withfriends. Not the case inLumberton. The Lumber-ton Raiderettes have domi-nated halftime along withthe Mighty Raider March-ing Band. This year plansto be no different.This year, fans can look

forward to the largestgroup of Raiderettes than

ever before. The group hasa total of 34 girls, withseven returning seniors, 10juniors, six sophomoresand 11 freshmen joiningthe team.Officers for the 2012-

2013 Raiderettes are Cap-tain Katie Deaton, whoserved as First Lieutenantlast year, First LieutenantCalli Roberts, LieutenantMallory Domingue, Lieu-tenant Katelyn Kirk, Lieu-tenant Emily Majors andLieutenant Baylie Fox.This year fans can expect

to enjoy the Raiderettestraditional oil derrick rou-tine. The oil derrick routinehas been a long standingtradition at LumbertonHigh School, beginning inthe late 1970's.

Raiderettes will beadding a new prop routineto the line up, which allowsthem to incorporate largewooden boxes into the rou-tine. They will also be de-buting their jazz, kick andpom routine.Director April York, a
