Our Wonderful Buddy Buddy was the sweetest! I was fortunate to get to know him well, and I cherish our time together. He took his volunteer work for the Center very seriously. Our Wonderful Buddy

Buddy was the sweetest! I was fortunate to get to know him well, and I cherish our time together. He took his volunteer work for the Center very seriously. When he and Betty moved to Cedarfield, I told him he was now the TSCOR ambassador there. Savvy Financial Adviser

It really was Buddy who got me involved in the Shepherd’s Center - first in driving, then in the Open U, and eventually to the Board, when Bill Blake was president. Our friendship goes back to the early 50’s when I was a part of his coming to State-Planters Bank where he spent his entire banking career (with its successor banks to

SunTrust today). We used to tease when I said I hired Buddy, and he said that made me lots older than he!

For many years, Buddy carried the major financial knowledge and investment responsibilities for TSCOR. He and his wife Betty were stalwarts in TSCOR and were towers of strength in every phase of its activities.

Buddy’s cheery smile and welcoming manner made Open University’s Thursdays at First Presbyterian very special! In every arena in which he moved, Buddy was a calming, welcoming, knowledgeable, and delightful friend whose memory will continue to inspire us for a long while.

We are fortunate to have shared our lives with him.

Strong Leader

Buddy made major contributions to The Shepherd's Center in many ways: as a board member, then vice president (1997-1999) and later, the Center’s only 2-time president (1999-2001 & 2005-2006). Dedicated Volunteer

Buddy Harlan was a man of many accomplishments: well-respected banker; active and dedicated church member; enthusiastic participant in various volunteer organizations, e.g.,

TSCOR, Lions Club; a piano player; a loyal UVA fan; and, above all, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.

My Thursdays at the Open University were always a little brighter when he arrived to help me at the table to greet and assist TSCOR members at First Presbyterian Church. And when things slowed down a bit at the table, we "solved" many world problems, and, fortunately for me, we agreed on everything! Buddy's dedication to TSCOR was exemplified by his numerous years serving on the Board, twice as president, and later his dependable assistance at the OU.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. We need more Buddy Harlans in this world!

Message from the Executive Director

When I think of my position here at TSCOR, I find myself feeling mighty blessed to be surrounded by such wisdom, experience, energy and support. I am constantly telling everyone how astounded I am by our members and volunteers. You all have really redefined what it is to grow older. Everyone really does need to know about TSCOR – a whole bunch of folks who are young at heart and have a lot of fun learning and being gracious to those around them.

I count on all of you for your ideas and efforts to keep this organization strong and vital in our community. We are a volunteer-operated nonprofit – I’m just here to direct. That being said, take a good look at our wish list and think of ways that you can contribute. What would you really like to do? Let’s talk. We can make a place for you!

- Julie

Tag Line Update

The number of suggestions for a tag line was not what we had hoped. While all that we received were creative and thoughtful, we have to report that none stood out as THE tagline for the Center. We appreciate those of you who took a stab at it. Here are a few that we felt deserved honorable mention:

Improving with Age

Volunteer To Be Young

Where you will always be herd

Strive to Learn-Drive to Help Others

And a play on the Star Trek motto,

Give, Learn and Prosper!

A thank you to everyone who submitted tag line suggestions. Your input means so much.

New board members Peter Goodman, John C. Clark III, William Slaughter, Mary Maiden and, returning for a second term, Hal Costley.

VOLUNTEER NOD

A special thanks to Millie De Les Dernier for the many years of volunteer service working the desk at the OU on Mondays at St. Luke Lutheran. Whether greeting students, taking in tuition, or just keeping me straight, Millie always accomplished the job with kindness and grace. We’ll still see her at classes, but you will be greatly missed at the desk, Millie!

A Challenge to Members

I have been a member of TSCOR for a long time. A friend dragged me to hear a lunchtime speaker one day. I found this outing quite enjoyable. And informative. Years later when I retired, I remembered the experience and started attending the OU regularly. It wasn't until the last several years, however, when I found myself involved with

the operations of the Center (with Board and committee work) that I realized how precarious is our financial situation. At stake, truly, is our very existence. BUT . . . there are things we all can do. I CHALLENGE YOU to (1) fix a sandwich for a friend and bring him/her to the OU to hear the lunchtime speaker; (2) tell someone about TSCOR volunteer opportunities (or volunteer to get involved yourself!); (3) give a thoughtful financial gift. ALL of us ARE The Shepherd's Center. I thank you in advance. - Jack Welsh, Board
