blindnessbyrepeatedwarningsandmanycareful instructions.ItwillpayustogivecloseattentiontoHiswords.Toward the endof the age,we are told, there shall be a timeof stepped-up

religious activity and frenzied expectation, growing out of the turbulentconditions prevailing among nations. The language is familiar to mostChristians: “Wars and rumors of wars … nation shall rise against nation …famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places….Then shall theydeliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of allnations…and thenshallmanybeoffended, andshallbetrayoneanother, andshallhateoneanother.”Concurrent with this state of affairs will be a great increase in religious

TheHonestUseofReligiousWords

A DISTURBING PHENOMENON of the day is the new and tricky use offamiliarwords.A“people’srepublic,”forinstance, isnotarepublicnordoesitbelongtothe

In a predominantly

Christian society such as prevails in theWest the words of Scripture and ofChristian theology have quite naturally acquired a fixed meaning and untilrecentlyalwaysmeantthesamethingwhenevertheywereusedbyeducatedandresponsible persons. With the coming of the various revolutions—scientific, industrial, philosophical, social, artistic, political—fixedmeaningshavedesertedreligious words and now float about like disembodied spirits, looking for butapparentlyneverfindingthebodiesfromwhichtheyhavebeenexorcisedbytherevolutionists.Among religious words which have lost their Christian meaning are
