Open one on topof the other felled by another wing in flight. Aflash of white hair disappeared into thedistance.

Thomas lifts his scalpel. Twenty-five yearspassed and now that same unkempt white headof hair is here. Underneath, fifteen billion nowdefunct neurons lay. What secrets do they still

We’ve been up to Tabernas a few times thismonth and also up to Baza through thecountryside; I was hoping to see row upon rowof almond blossom but we never timed it quiteright to get the effect that Sue Taylor hascaptured in this photograph (above) taken inCela. Thanks for sharing this, a perfect viewand exactly what I was hoping to see!

We were out for St Patricks at The Irish Roveron Mojácar Playa, an excellent night ofentertainment including some superb Irishmusic and some amazing folk dancing from‘Celtic Fire’ - could have watched it all night!

One Saturday in March, John sawa lady have her handbag snatched and decidedto persue the thief. Another time, another space. “It’s heresomewhere.” Thomas lifts the red ginghamcurtain hiding plastic plumbing and detergent.Dragging out an old cider box he lifts out oneof the jars. No one knew. A treasure of a find for us this month is Hostel el Puente in Tabernas. The proprietor’s

wife, Carmen, is a prolific painter, embroidress, crocheter and lace maker.

Her art adorns the walls of the bar and hostel and we were invited to look around her

house where almost all the soft furnishings have been made by Carmen. We’re hopingwe can persuade her to exhibit at El Retiro in Turre so then many more people can

enjoy her tallent!

Carmen mostly paints from photographs but also from her imagination.

Shipmates! Brits have lots in

common with our sunny Spanish

hosts and that’s two goodreasons why we’re here.

Deeply embedded within the

Spanish psyche is the duende;

dark, dramatic forces that canon occasion elevate and

motivate the soul. In tandem

rides the iconography of thatpowerfully courageous beast the

bull.

Art history in Spain

Please mention The Sentinella when responding to adverts

We too have bull as icon: John Bull, the bulldog, bulldog spirit etc.Our evident, eccentric problem being that we’re unable to determine

the difference between Canis Major and Taurus. No matter, whether

dog or bull, some of our celebs display the image well. We have redrage roofer Rooney rampaging ineptly round the world’s football rings,

and dear ol’ sulky Gordon’s phizog after the election.

I digress. Strangely, Spain’s ubiquitous icon does not appear as

prominently in fine art as one might suppose. (Prove me wrong youknow-it-alls!) Picasso however, obliged, often using the image probably

when bored with the favourite motif of his muses’ private parts.

Let’s turn to Spanish popular culture: those bull sculptures towering

over hillsides throughout the country, boldly silhouetted against theskyline. The original was designed by Manolo Prieto in 1954 and

appeared on the main Madrid to Burgos road. Now there are nearly

100 of them each of steel and weighing four tonnes. Prieto soldcopyright of the image to the drinks firm Osborne in 1979 but

subsequently was not best pleased. The furious artist maintained the

muliple looked like a goat and furthermore the bullock’s bollocks hadbecome belittled. Sad, sad!

And now the moment you’ve been waiting for: the denouement of

my little monthly missive...what a load of bull!...Shipmates, I got in

first!

TTFN, quirkily yours, Sir Percival Trodnip RN RTD.

probably get away with the first couple but atattempted disguise four or five your cover is blown. The way to deal with this problem is to make anote, in a book in case you forget, of the peopleyou had this yawning issue with, and the next timeyou see them do the smart thing and lie throughyour teeth about how you have a previousengagement.

Easter in our house is spent devouring seasonal delights; hot cross buns, chocolate

eggs and of course settling down in front of the tube for a few hours to take in abiblical epic or two. That is apart from “She Who Must Be Obeyed” whom has

never seen any these films, preferring to read the Good Book itself.

The heyday for these movies was really the 1950s and 1960s, and there is something

about them that always brought together the cream of Hollywood actors and someof the very best directors. The cast of these films really is like reading through a

I thought it was appropriate to kick off theseries with a real true soul legend, Marvin Gaye whose birth and deathoccured in this month!! Yours in music, DJ Deano.

Marvin Pentz Gaye Jr, (April 2nd 1939-April1st 1984) an American singer-songwriterand musician, began his incredible careeras a session drummer & played with a groupin the late 50's called The Moonglows(disbanded in 1960). He immediatelysigned as a solo artist with Tamla Records,a subsidiary of Motown, and ranked as thelabel's top-selling artist during the 60's.

Due to the popular solo hits “How Sweet itis (To Be Loved by You)", "Ain't thatPeculiar", "I Heard It Through theGrapevine" and his duet singles with singersMary Wells & Tammi Terrell, he was laternamed as "The Prince of Motown" and "ThePrince of Soul".

Catch DJ Deano 6-9 every Saturday evening on Valle Radio(98.8& 89.6 or on-line) to hear the very best in JAZZ FUNK SOUL

In the 70's his work included the albums“What's Going On”, “Let's Get It On” & “IWant You”. After a self-imposed Europeanexile in the early 80's Gaye returned in1982 with a Grammy Award winning hit"Sexual Healing" and the Midnight Lovealbum before his death. Gaye was shotdead at the age of 45 by his father on April1st 1984, a tragic loss to the soul musicindustry. In 2008,the American musicmagazine Rolling Stone ranked Gaye at no6 on it's list of TheGreatest Singers of AllTime & ranked him atno 18 on 100 GreatestArtists of All Time.

We spent another excellent night dancing to‘Doghouse’ at Bar la Union in La Alfoquia lastmonth. The event was in aid of the Dog HouseFoundation in Huercal Overa and raised 730euros for abandoned dogs! ‘Doghouse’ alsoplayed at the Los Cojos fiesta in March andyou can catch them playing on St Georges Day23rd April again at Bar la Union. We asked Mo(Mo’s bar, La Alfoquia - the ‘home’ ofDoghouse) for a few words about the band:

Well to start off with, I never would haveimagined that I'd be playing with "Bongo Bob",our drummer. He played the same venues in

Germany as I did in my old band more or lessat the same time over 35 years ago and we'dnever met. "Doggy", a veteran rocker and our

main vocalist and lead guitarist, had retired.

"You can't hang up your guitar cos there's‘rockin’ to be done" says me. "Lew Canoe",our bass man and the latest member of

Shadow of the Wind – Carlos Ruiz Zafón

A gothic masterpiece, full of madness, murder,

mystery, suspense and love – The Sentinella.

In the summer of 1945,Daniel Sempere wakesfrom a fevered sleep, screaming. He can notremember the face of hismother who died fromcholera when he was justfour. Sempere senior takesDaniel through the earlymorning streets of

Barcelona to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books,a cavernous depository where shelf upon shelfof long forgotten publications are kept safeby bibliophile guardians. Once introduced tothe cemetery, each visitor is allowed to choosejust one book to adopt and ensure that it isnever lost. Daniel chooses “The Shadow of theWind” by Julián Carax. He takes the book homeand is completely engrossed.

Ten years later, Daniel isworking in his father’s bookshopand as he endeavours tounravel the mystery of JuliánCarax his life increasinglybecoming interwoven with thatof the deceased author. Whydid Carax leave Barcelona? Whois the “man with no face” thatstalks Daniel and why is he sodetermined to burn all of the

remaining copies of Carax’s work? Thecharacters in this book are wonderfully richand engaging; Fermín the lyrical tramp thatbecomes Daniel’s comrade in arms; the eruditeDon Barceló whose blind daughter Daniel fallsin love with, the evil police inspector Fumero.

The atmospheric, poetic prose is beautifullytranslated by Lucia Graves. This is a thoroughlyabsorbing book, a story of the power of the

written word; by turns adetective story, a politicalthriller, a historical romance. It may seem crass to say thatthis book is a real page turner. The truth is – it is!

The World Snooker Championship is thehighlight of the snooker calendar. Theworld’s top 16 seeded players are joined

by another 16 that have battled through thequalifying rounds to challenge for the sport’smost coveted prize.

The draw for the first round matches hasthrown up some intriguing contests.Australian Neil Robertson begins the defenceof his title against another very attackingplayer, Bristolian Judd Trump. Judd broughtan impressive amateur record with him whenhe turned professional in 2005 and holds therecord as the youngest player to make acompetitive 147 break, beating RonnieO’Sullivan’s record from 1991.

For his part “The Rocket” has had a mixedseason so far and opens his campaign againstWelsh qualifier Dominic Dale. Ronnie was wellbeaten by Neil Robertson in the World Openin September but bounced back to claim thePremier Snooker League beating Robertson inthe semi-final along the way. From there

O’Sullivan had a disappointing UKChampionship and Masters. We wait to seewhat Ronnie turns up to the Crucible.

The current world number 1 and three timechampion John Higgins takes on Stephen Leein the first round. Higgins has been insparkling form since returning from his sixmonth ban for bringing the game intodisrepute for not reporting an illegal match-fixing approach. On his return he has got theUK Championship and the Welsh Open underhis belt.

Higgins is not the only player in good form atpresent, Ding Junhui comes to tournamenton the back of victory in the Masters. Formertwo time champion Mark Williams has beenrising back up the rankings in the last coupleof years.

It certainly promises to be another excitingfortnight in the Steel City.

sport18On the nose

April may see the start of the flat season with

the traditional opener, The Lincoln on the 2nd

but the month still holds the greatest and

most famous steeplechases of all in store for

us; The Grand National held on the 9th April

at Aintree.

The race has provided many famous sporting

moments and certainly up there is the run-in

during the 1973 race which heralded the

coming of a true legend, one who made the

race his own. The great Red Rum was 15

lengths behind Crisp after the last but

gradually wore his lead down, and won by

¾ l. He went on to win again in 1974, coming

second in 1975 and 1976 before scoring again

1977.

With 40 runners going to the post picking a

winner of this race always proves to be a

perennial quandary. Backers of rank outsider

Mon Mome, victor in 2009, may not share this

view. Mon Mome bucked more than one trend

that year. Until then the record of French bred

horses in the race was not one of success and

the last 100/1 shot was Foinavon in 1967.

Stamina and experience is what’s needed to

get around the course with some of the most

gruelling fences in the NH circuit, Becher’s

Brook, The Chair and the rest. Recent winning

form is not always important, but runners

must have previously got round 3m+ races to

do well. Age is just as key; eleven out of the

last 17 have been aged 10 or above.

All important, and one that Red Rum’s first

victory points to is, weight. The giant

Australian chaser Crisp was carrying 12st and

there were 23lbs between them that day. In

the last 25 years only one horse has succeeded

carrying over 11-1, last year’s winner, Don’t

Push It. The optimum weight suggested by

statistics is 10st 6lb to 11st 1lb.

Will this be the year a woman wins the race?

Nina Carberry is a great jockey and has a

decent mount. Who would bet against

amateur jockey and friend to Royals, Sam

Waley-Cohen making a double after Gold Cup

success at Cheltenham? And in the same

month as his pals get married! Whatever you

back – Good luck!

Grand National winning jockey, MickFitzgerald: “Sex is an anticlimax

after that!”

The flat season starts in April, so it’s move over jumpers, it’s time for the speed merchants. There are of course many famous meets and festivals from now until the end of the season;Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood, and of course the five classics:

Course: NewmarketDistance: 1 mileDate: Saturday 30th April

The Craven Stakes also run at Newmarket on 14th April is considered a good trial

for colts entered into the 2000 Guineas. Run over the same course and distance.

Another trial is the Greenham Stakes run at Newbury over 7f (16th April)

Course: NewmarketDistance: 1 mileDate: Sunday 1st May

Trials for this race are the Nell Gwyn Stakes run at the Craven Meeting (13th

April) over 7f on the Rowley mile and the Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury on

16th April over 7f.

Course: EpsomDistance: 1 mile 4fDate: Friday 3rd June

The 1000 Guineas will provide some clues but another key trial race for the

Oaks is the Chartwell Fillies Stakes held at Lingfield Park on May 7th over 7f.

Course: EpsomDistance: 1 mile 4fDate: Saturday 4th June

With a race as prestigious as The Derby, there are a number of trial races

where the leading contenders test their mettle. In April a key trial race is the

Classic Trial run at Sandown Park on 24th April over 1m 2f 7yds.

Course: DoncasterDistance: 1 mile 6fDate: Saturday 10th Sept

As the flat season draws to a close we should by now have some good indicators

as to the winner of this race.

Bar La Union will be holding their normal

Grand National Extravaganza with the big

race itself being shown on the giant screen. There will be a BBQ and a quiz after the race.If that’s not enough excitement for everybody

this will be followed by music and dancing with

the fabulous Mr Brian Dee so this is definitelya date not to be missed.

The Derby – Open to 3yo colts and fillies, The Derby is arguably the greatest flat race in the world andone that everyone wants to win. This is the Blue Riband of turf.

The Oaks – Open to 3yo fillies only. The Epsom course is deceptively undulating, a steep climb and thendescent down to Tattenham Corner provides a real test for the runners together with the cambers onthe course.

1000 Guineas – Open to 3yo fillies only. The 1000 Guineas is the youngest of the classics, first run 1814five years after the 2000 Guineas. Again it is run around the Rowley mile and provides runners with thesame challenges as their counterparts the day before.

2000 Guineas – Open to 3yo colts and fillies. Run around the Rowley mile at ‘the Home of Racing. Thefirst classic of the year is a test of speed and stamina. Always run at a cracking pace, the runnersstamina is tested as they climb the Rowley hill towards the winning post.

St Ledger – Open to 3yo colts and fillies. The last of the season and the oldest of the classics has beenrun on the Town Moor course since 1776.

This month sees the anniversary of a

bizarre sporting tradition – streaking.

Twenty-five year old Australian Michael

O'Brien is considered to be the firststreaker at a major sporting event when

on April 20, 1974, he ran naked onto the

pitch during an England vs. France matchat Twickenham. The heyday of streaking

was undoubtedly the 1970s and it’s use inits modern parlance meaning “ to run

naked through a public place” only came

about in 1973 after a mass streak inWashington DC. What makes them do it?

First Driving Impressions – BMW 6-SeriesConvertible, Southern Spain.

We were supposed to fly from Heathrow toGibraltar, but due to adverse weather andpoor visibility on the Rock, the BA flight wasdiverted to Malaga. Then a 1.5-hour taxi rideback to Gib, to pick up the British Registered,‘11’ plate 6-Series, where the rain hadstopped, but the wind hadn’t.

We did manage to get the roof down for afew minutes before the heavens opened upagain, then back through Customs andPassport Control and into a not so sunny Spain. We took the scenic route back towardsMalaga, and BMW’s own marketing sloganreally sums up the all-new car: ‘Responsive,Agile and a Refined open top Experience’ wellit would have been open top, if the rain hadstopped. But the new car is truly great todrive, and be a passenger in. It feels so safeand solid and every bit a German PremiumSports car.

The 640i is powered by a turbo-charged 6-cylinder petrol engine that produces 320hp,goes from 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds, a top speedof 155mph and a very impressive C02 emissionfigure of 185g/km. We did not get chance toproperly test the MPG figure using the on-board computer, but the official combinedfuel consumption figure is 35.8mpg. There ismore than enough power from this 3.0-litreengine.

The new car is all new, has a newly developedchassis and the bodywork gets a completemakeover. A more contoured roof, a sweepingbonnet that is reminiscent of an Aston fromcertain angles, the side swathe lines morepronounced and a flat waistline add up to amuch more attractive car.

The new “6’’ has got an increased wheelbaseof 75mm, it is 74mm wider and the overalllength has grown by 74mm. The two rear seatsare still a bit small for two adults, but will fitin children.

The list of standard equipment is veryimpressive with 18-inch alloys, Dakota leatherupholstery, Dynamic Stability Control, partelectric seats, two-zone air-conditioning,

You know how it is. It's one of those slowafternoons in the Spanish Legislature, you'rekicking your heels waiting for Siesta time, youneed to something to occupy your mind. Thenyou have an idea....

"Hey! Why not drop the speed limit on ALLour motorways, countrywide, by 10kmph???"you cry.

Your fellow politicians, equally bored, agreewholeheartedly. Let's just imagine, that thereis a lone voice at the back. We'll call him "TheVoice of Reason", or TVOR for short.

He says: "But, most of the Spanish motorwaysare virtually empty, especially the expensivetoll roads, can't we leave them be?"

"No!", say the now excited mass of Politicians- "We need legislation, and we need it NOW!"

"But think of the cost - the thousands of new110 signs...."

"Think of the REVENUE!" - exclaims onepolitician, rubbing his hands, whose son is arising star in The Guardia Civil.

"Why can't we just make sure that the busy, dangerous areas, such as the roads aroundAlicante, Valencia, etc, are safely limited,as indeed most of them are? - Why are weengaging in such an expensive, pointlessexercise?" persists the clearly naive TVOR.

A large, old fellow with glasses perched on

the end of his nose sidles up to The Voice ofReason, and looks down at him as one wouldto a small confused child. He's been in Politics

for a long, long time. He puts a reassuring

arm around his shoulder.

"Because we can." he says.

In the Province of Jaén are two delightful Renaissance towns only nine kilometresapart, built on the escarpment of the Loma de Úbeda overlooking the valley of theGuadalquivir. This month, The Sentinella’s travel expert, Margaret Surie visits Baeza

and Úbeda. Ferri Tours arrange a superb 4 day trip over Semana Santa, taking in boththese towns as well as the superb Parque Natural de Cazorla.

little to the north of here is Plaza Santa Cruz, the church being Baeza’s oldest, built shortlyafter the reconquest.

To the east is the Plaza de Santa Maria, aglorious square with the 16C Cathedral. Likemany of Baeza’s and Úbeda’s churches, ithas a brilliant painted screen by MaestroBartolomé, a local craftsman, who wasresponsible for some of the finest examplesof this uniquely Spanish contribution toRenaissance art.

In the centre of the Plaza is a 16C fountain ,with pilasters and crude caryatids supportingthe arms of Felipe II.

West of the Paseo de la Constitución, in C/

Benavides is the ayuntamiento, originally the

Baza was important in Roman times asBeatia, and later a Visigothic bishopric andthen a prosperous commercial andagricultural centre under the Moors. Afterthe reconquest in 1227, nobles were grantedestates in the surrounding countryside withorders to defend the frontier zone. Thesenobles were made rich by farming and textileproduction and endowed the town withnumerous striking Renaissance buildings inthe 16C.

Being still a very small town, it is very easyto walk around and enjoy the Paseo de la

Constitucion with its 16C corn-exchange, thearcaded 18C Casa Consistorial, or old townhall, and the Plaza de los Leones, a cobbledsquare enclosed by beautiful Renaissancebuildings, one being the old slaughterhouse, bearing the arms of Carlos V.

The stepped street behind the Plaza de los

Leones ascends to another cluster ofmonuments including the finest of Baeza’spalaces, the Palacio de Jabalquinto, now aseminary. It was built in the 15C by theBenavides family, and has a beautiful interiorpatio with a double tier of arcades around acentral fountain, and a superb Baroquestaircase with fine carving.

The Antigua Universidad was founded in1538, and after functioning for nearly threecenturies as a centre of study and debate, its charter was revoked in 1824 during thetyrannical reign of Fernando VII. Since 1875,the buildings have been used as a school. A

The town fell to the Christians in 1234, andas happened in Baeza, numerous noblefamilies were then established by the Kingand built their mansions in the town. Thesehaughty “lions of Úbeda” as they styledthemselves were soon warring amongst eachother and in 1503 Fernando and Isabelordered the destruction of the town’s wallsand towers, to enable the unruly aristocratsto be kept in check.

As in Baeza it was in the 16C that Úbeda’sfortunes reached their zenith and membersof the same noble families came to holdprominent positions in the imperial Spanishcourt. The houses of Cobos and Molinos weretwo families who, linked by marriage, dominated the town’s affairs. Theyemployed Andres de Vandelvira as theirprincipal architect, whose buildings are theglory of Úbeda today.

To the south you will see the 13C church ofSanta María de los Reales Alcázares, builton the site of a former mosque. It has a finescreen also created by Maestro Bartolomé .

There are seeds that lie in the desert waiting for the conditions to bejust right; then they suddenly burst into colour and are gone again ina day or two. Those seeds might have waited a year or even ten, forjust the right conditions.

In a funny way the folk of Tabernas are a little like that.

This multi-racial town all go about their business, playing dominos inthe church square, señoras shopping on a market day, familiessocializing in their favourite bar; until the call goes out for extrasand Tabernas becomes a ghost town.

For fifty bucks a day the Spanish become the dons and señoritas, theGypsies are the Mexican banditos and the white skinned Europeansare the cowboys; pistoleros with glued on facial hair parade thestreets of Texas Hollywood (Fort Bravo) with an air of expectationwaiting for the call to action. All share a common dream; ‘Mine is theface that the director is going to see and make famous.’ Beamingsmiles, blooming like desert blossoms and in two or three days it isall over, until the next time.

To participate in this Wild West costume party, where there IS such athing as free lunch, is to be embraced by the extended family of a

town that lives the movie dream.

If you want a really good spectacle then Lorcais the place. You have to wait a few hours toget a good viewpoint on the pavement, and theprocession lasts about 3 hours, so legs can get abit tired. Horse drawn chariots career up thestreet at full speed!!

Easter Sunday in Turre, tells the story of theempty tomb, how they find Jesus and how Maryand Jesus are reunited. This is done by the ladscarrying (and running with) the effigies.

Easter is the time when the heavy drums arebrought out from dusty store-rooms, tra-boom... tra-boom…, together with the figuresof pale-looking Christs taken from their normalroosts behind the church altars. Christsuffering dreadfully on the cross, now equallyfraught on the shoulders of the Carpenter’ssons. Perhaps la virgen follows behind, a largepainted figure on a wooden plinth, with apurple mantle and, currently, a slightly biliousexpression. She is carried, creaking gently, bysix or eight devotees. Tra-boom… tra-boom…

The cadres of the faithful will be dressed intheir sinister hoods and gowns as the wholeprocession lurches, stops and starts down thestreets and through the crowds. The onlookersgenuflect, perhaps for the first time in twelvemonths and they pinch out their cigarettes asthe figures pass.

In our pueblo, there’s not many people in thecrowd and, tourist office excepted, not muchenthusiasm from the participants either.Easter may be the main fiesta in the religiouscalendar, but it’s just an excuse for a few dayson the costa and in the disco-pubs for most of

the population. Some fifteen million peoplehave left the cities for a few days off work, achance for a ligue or a borrachera: an affairor a piss-up. Perhaps the faithful have gone toSevilla; here they’ve come for the party.

The beach is full of visitors (no self-respectinglocal will go near the water until September)and the street that fronts Mojácar playa isnose-to-tail crammed with cars. I once ran anEaster picture on the front page of the paper. It was a pen and ink drawing by an artist calledAmpudia in dramatic black slash. A picture ofthree crosses on a hill standing at slight anglesto each other. Below, girls are sunbathing.

The bars, the restaurants and most of thesouvenir shops are open on Easter Friday, evenif the estate agents, mechanics andsupermarkets have closed for the day.Certainly the gas station is doing wonderfulbusiness. You can pick up a box of chocolates,a bottle of whisky, some french letters or, ofcourse, a sex-video while you are there. Forsome reason, they don’t sell cigarettes anymore. It’s probably a moral thing.

As the sun sets over the pueblo, a brass bandstutters enthusiastically through a mixture ofSouza, pasodobles and sacred music as thevolume in Mojácar’s six hundred bars swellsand roars. The children in their flamenco suitsgallop through the crowds, shrieking. There’llbe some thunder-flashes let off later. One wayor another, we’ll stay up until dawn.

If you have to go to court and you don’thave the money to confront all the costsinvolved, in Spain you can claim free legalaid under certain circumstances. Thisservice is called “Asistencia Juridica

Gratuita” and is also available for allEuropean citizens, regardless whetheryou’re a resident in Spain or not.

First, let’s have a look at the costs of a trial. These mainly include: solicitors’ and barristers’fees, announcements in official journals, deposits for certain appeals, experts’ fees.

These costs normally have to be paid up frontby the party concerned. At the end of the trialthe court has to decide which party isultimately to bear the costs; in Spain this isknown as the “condena en costas” (order topay costs) and it is governed by the “loser pays”principle.

Free legal aid is available for all cases involvingsums of over 900€. The most importantrequirement is that your income is below acertain amount. For 2011 this amount is set bylaw at 17,959.20€ yearly. This includes theincome of ALL the family members that youshare a household with.

Last month saw me bemoaning the winds andfrosts which had ravaged my garden up herein the foothills of the mountains. But I’mfeeling more upbeat this month. The greywoody, lifeless looking stems which I choppedback a couple of weeks ago are alreadybecoming covered again in soft green shoots. It’s such an exciting time to be out in thegarden where every day there is somethingnew to see. My water butts are filled withrain water, useful for daily watering the potsof seedlings and cuttings which are beginningto crowd the sheltered patio at the front ofthe house. Now is the time to begin feedingyour pot plants weekly and continuingthroughout the spring and summer. Yourreward should be strong foliage and abundantblooms.

A note of gloom in the middle of my optimism;I’m sure there are many who are aware ofthe dreaded processionary caterpillars whichfeed on the sap of native pine trees and whichare dangerous to people and animals, evenkilling small dogs. But for those who areunaware of this phenomenon, I don’t think itwill hurt to reinforce the message to be very

wary of them. Now is the time when they aremost active.

If you have pine trees in your garden, stand

back and take a careful look around. If you

see what appears to be an egg shaped ball ofsticky cotton wool about 4/5 inches round, this is the nest housing hundreds of wriggling

larvae and caterpillars. If you are able, youshould get rid of these nests very carefully. The caterpillars have long sticky hairs whichare extremelyirritant to eyes andthroats. The way Ideal with them isfirstly to spray theball with hairspray toform a protectivecoating around theball, stopping the hairs from shooting out.Always wearing gloves, I use long handledloppers to cut away the branch bearing thenest straight into a plastic bag. If you can -put them into a metal bucket and set fire tothe whole thing. Just thinking about thesethings makes me shiver.

RECYCLINGMEDICINESIn Spain alone, a total of 1.1 billion packets ofpharmaceutical products are sold every year, weighing a total of 32,000 tonnes. A significantamount of these medicines are not consumed.Expired or unused medicines should not bethrown away with your normal rubbish orpoured down the sink. The Spanish Waste Planclasses medicines as special domestic wasteand some even feature on dangeroussubstances lists. According to research carriedout by the Spanish Scientific Research Council(CSIC), published in 2005, considerable levelsof various medicines, including some as well-known as ibuprofen, were detected along theRiver Ebro. The "Integrated PackagingCollection and Management System", (SIGREhttp://www.sigre.es/inicio.asp) is a Spanishpharmaceutical industry initiative for treatingboth medicines and medicine packagingecologically, preventing them from pollutingrivers and making it possible for this waste tobe reused. SIGRE has set up a collection pointin virtually all chemists in Spain. Each chemist

collects around 8 kilos per month, whichrepresents around 2000 tonnes of waste peryear.

The colour we paint our houses has an impacton global warming and has a considerableimpact on our energy consumption. Thelighter the colour of the paint the lower theabsorption of radiant heat, whereas darkcolours can absorb up to 94%. According theto Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, painting the outside of a house white wouldbe equivalent to preventing the emission of10 tonnes of greenhouse effect gases. If theworlds 100 biggest cities had lighter colouredroofs and facades as well as more reflectivepaving, this would increase the reflectivity ofthe earth’s surface, equivalent to preventingthe emission of 44 gigatonnes of CO2.

Before she had a chance to complain he

quickly explained the situation:

“You have to hear about how thishappened. While driving home, I saw this

offered her a ride. Since she was hungry, Ibrought her home and fed her some of theleftovers in the refrigerator that you had

This months theme is Tuscan Design.

Imagine crumbling patios, sun baked terraces, terracotta tiles, textured fresco walls, detailed murals, simple yet sturdy furnitureand you have the basis of Tuscan Design.

Walls are usually plaster or stucco withhandcrafted, decorative finishes. Painted innatural warm earthy tones, creams throughto yellows, golds, reds, browns, greens.Popular wall treatments include glazing, colorwashing, lime washing, and hand trowelledtextures.

Floors are again tiles often with intricatemosaic inlay with antique rugs.Flooringmaterials tend to be tiles made from naturalmaterials, wide wooden planks, travertine, terrazzo, or marble.

Furniture in Tuscany design can range fromsturdy pieces with time-worn finishes to richlyfinished wooden and upholstered pieces.Embellishments like nail head trim, gold leaf, tile accents, metal hardware, and mosaicinlays enhance the interest of these furniturepieces. Candle sconces and light fixtures madefrom wrought iron are easy accessories to find.

Tuscan fabrics seen on upholstery, bedding, and window treatments include texture-richlinens, lush damasks or brocades, and luxuriousvelvets or silks.

No Tuscan kitchen would be complete withoutbottles of Italian wine which can be used forcooking or entertaining. Fired clay urns orTuscan pottery can be displayed as convenientutensil holders or serve as added decoration.Woven baskets are another handy accessory

to have in the kitchen due to their usefulnessand rich texture. Dress up dining tables orbreakfast nooks with place mats or tablerunners made from woven straw or decorativeold world fabrics like chenille or tapestry.

The element of water is a great addition toyour courtyard. Water fountains and plantingremind you of Tuscan hillsides......now whereis that glass of vino?

Eggs – These have been used by pagans andother religions for over 2500 years to symbolizespring, but adopted by Christians for bothsymbolic and practical reasons. Symbolicallythe egg contains new life; the hard shell isthe sealed tomb of Christ and when brokensymbolizes his resurrection. Practically, duringLent many Christian traditions forbid eatingdairy foods as well as meat, hence pancakeday using up all the eggs and marking thebeginning of Lent. Of course the chickenswould continue to lay throughout the next fewweeks and the surplus would be hard boiledto preserve them and then eaten during Easter.

Ma Kember has created a very special Easter meal combining all the traditional elements ofthe Christian festivals around Easter, but where do they come from?

Lamb – The eating of lamb at Easter dates backto pre-Christian Judaism when a lamb wassacrificed to commemorate the Exodus fromEgypt to the promised land and eaten duringPassover. The blood of the lamb was daubedabove the front door so that the spirit of theLord would pass over the inhabitants and theywould not suffer the tenth plague inflicted onthe Egyptians. Jesus himself became thesymbol of the lamb when John the Baptistproclaimed “Behold, the Lamb of God, whotakes away the sin of the world”. In medievaltimes it was considered lucky to see a lamb atEaster, particularly as the Devil could take theform of all animals but not that of the lamb.

Another slow night in the bar had seen theglass polishing interrupted only by José,nursing a tubo whilst bemoaning the smokingban and Rodrigo in for his nightly brandy afterwork. Cleaning the shelves and dusting offthose bottles at the back, I reached thewhiskey shelf and as I clasped a half emptybottle left over from a session of flamingDrambuies, a thick American drawl came atme from the other side of the bar. “Hold itright there.” I stuck my hands up in feignedsurrender and slowly turned round. “Mygranddaddy used to drink that.” Leaning overthe bar before me was an American vision, golden hair framing her long face, equininenose and piercing blue eyes. “You can’t poura Rusty Nail without it and I’ll take mine withJohnnie Walker Black Label.” She sunk the firstone in a couple of gulps. “This is my kindadrink. Strong and short. My Granddaddy namedthis y’know and I’m named after him –Theodora. It’s a pleasure …”

Tales of Hawaiian nights, Granddaddy’s RatPack Nails in Vegas and life on the prowl flowedas I continued to pour. José and Rodrigo driftedout without me even noticing. I was in

raptures. This beauty had taken the breathclean out of my lungs. As I poured the last ofthe Drambuie, the door opened a crack. Thecool night air breezed in and with it a peakedcap and the merest of hand gestures. “That’smy ride.” “Stay, have another.I’m sure I’ve another bottlehere” I hurriedly searched butas I victoriously lifted the bottlealoft I was alone again in thebar. Just the blinking sign in thewindow illuminating the emptyvoid and more glasses to clean.

Sprains and strains affect muscles andligaments. (Ligaments are strong bands oftissue around joints that connect one boneto another.)

A sprain occurs when one or more of yourligaments have been stretched, twisted, ortorn, usually as a result of excessive forcebeing applied to a joint. The most commonlocations for a sprain to occur are:

• the knee • the ankle • the wrist • the thumb

A strain occurs when the muscle fibres stretchor tear. Strains can develop as the result of anaccident, or during physical or sportingactivities.

Most mild to moderate sprains and strains canbe treated at home using:

PRICE therapy, which stands for:

• Protection - protect the injured area byusing a support or, in the case of an ankleinjury, wearing shoes that enclose and supportyour feet, such as lace-ups.

• Rest - rest the injured joint or muscle. Avoidactivity for the first 48 to 72 hours.

• Ice - for the first 48 to 72 hours after theinjury, apply ice wrapped in a damp towel tothe injured area for 15 to 20 minutes everytwo to three hours during the day. Do not leavethe ice on while you are asleep, and do notallow the ice to touch your skin directly.

• Compression - compress or bandage theinjured area snugly but not too tight. Removethe bandage before you go to sleep.

• Elevation - keep the injured area raised andsupported on a pillow.

Avoiding HARM

For the first 72 hours you should avoid HARM.

• Heat •Alcohol • Running • Massage

Moving sprained joints: Most healthcareprofessionals recommend that you should notstop using a sprained joint because the injurywill heal quicker if you begin to move the jointas soon as you are able to.

You may have seen products labelled

“low GI, medium GI or High GI” and

may be wondering what does that

mean. What’s better high or low GI?

Do you eat a lot of carbohydrates?

Carbohydrates are high in energy and low in

fat but not all have the same effect on our

bodies. Our bodies convert carbohydrates

into glucose the body’s preferred fuel.

Glucose is either used immediately or stored

in the muscles and fat cells. The GI index is

a measurement of how quickly the body

converts foods into glucose. Foods labelled

“low GI” release glucose slowly into the

system and therefore your energy levels are

more constant throughout the day. If you

suffer from energy crashes late afternoon and

grab a biscuit and a cup of coffee for that

quick fix, you could be doing yourself harm

in the long run, as in order to correct the

glucose balance your body releases insulin

which in turn transfers the glucose to the fat

cells and hence weight gain. If this trend

continues your body may become resistant

to insulin and you could end up with type 2

diabetes.

I’ll briefly list some rules for you to use when

out shopping.

The higher fibre content of a food the lower

the GI. Swapping white rice (high GI) for

brown rice (medium GI). White flour is highly

processed whereas stoneground wholemeal

flour is less. Porridge would be lower GI than

flaked, puffed or honey coated cereals.

Grains such as bulgar wheat, quinoa, barley,

oats and buckwheat are all “low GI”. Protein

tends to be “low GI”.ie: meat, eggs and

butter. Avoid boiled sweets, doughnuts,

popcorn and biscuits. Most fruits, vegetables

and pulses are “low GI”.

47Your body’s many cries for water

health & beauty

Winner!

Your body’s many cries forWaterby Dr F Batmanghelidj.

In 1979 Dr FereydoonBatmanghelidj was a medicalpractitioner in Tehran whenthe violent revolution thatoverthrew the Shah tookplace. Almost all professional

people in the country were imprisoned andmostly shot within a day or two. He was heldlonger than most, probably due to hisusefulness as a doctor, but the cells that werebuilt for 6 - 8 people were crammed with upto 90 prisoners, who had to rotate theirposition (lying, squatting, standing) every fewhours. These horrendous conditions tested theabilities of the human body to extremes. Onenight a man with peptic ulcer disease collapsedin agony and the only medicine available waswater. Two glasses and within minutes his painhad disappeared. Two glasses every threehours and he survived his prison sentence. DrBatmanghelidj was allowed to live andeventually escaped to the US where hecontinued his research which is published infull in this amazing story of water.

Last month Fiona Davies (Balance for Health) gave us some eye opening facts about ourneed for water. When I read her article I enthusiastically told her about a book I read manyyears ago which I still have and regularly lend out to people, knowing how much it changed mylife and the way I treat common ailments successfully. Fiona had also read this book along with

hundreds of thousands of other people and weboth recommend you get yourself a copy. Here’s a short piece about the author (to whetyour appitite):

Horoscope by Madam Rohaizi49

Yours is a Fire sign, so maybe it is not so surprising

that you have been impatient with this long cold

winter! You flourish when faced with a challenge,

so use the longer days and the improving weather

to sort out and re-organise something that you have

been putting off for the last few months.

You are a person of your word, and if you say you

will do it, you will do it! This month will be a good

month to do just that – but beware! Be sure that it

is what you want to do, not what someone else said

that you wanted to do. There is a difference!

Not even your worst enemy could call you hard-

hearted, but there are occasions in this life where

tough love is necessary. This is so hard for you, and

you would much rather give in than hold out. Be

consistent in your decisions, and be ready to forgive.

Be Tough, but be Loving.

You have been turning something over in your mind,

and now you feel ready to go for it! Don’t jump in

too quickly, another moment of thought, and another

person’s point of view, and perhaps a small

compromise will make the whole project easier. After

all, a job shared is a job halved.

Look back over the last month and see what worked

best for you. Be thorough, because something

surprised you, and maybe this was not just a flash in

the pan. This is the month for you to accentuate the

positive, eliminate the negative, don’t mess with

Mr Inbetween!

There are so many opportunities out there, and your

natural energy and inventiveness can find any

number of things with which to occupy yourself.

Librans don’t know the meaning of the word ‘bored’,

but don’t overstretch yourself. Better to do one thing

well and enjoy it than six things in a mad hurry.

If it didn’t work, don’t do it again! You can get in

too deep, emotionally, and sometimes you can’t see

the wood for the trees. Not ever person ticks in

exactly the same way, so be prepared if necessary

to change your approach. It’s not weakness, it’s

flexibility, and it takes two to tango!

All things in moderation is not necessarily your

byword. You are not, and will never be, a merge-

into-the-background type. When the sun shines

spread your wings and fly, smile, be happy and see

how many people will smile back at you. You will be

surprised how addictive happiness can be!

Onwards and upwards, to infinity and beyond! It has

been a struggle, but you are one tough cookie, and

you never give up. Now you can see the light at the

end of the tunnel, and it is definitely not the train

coming the other way! Give yourself a pat on the

back, you deserve it.

If it all seems to be going your way, be thankful but

cautious! Your quick wits can sometimes lead you to

make hasty decisions. It’s not so much that you are

wrong, it is more that your speedy mind might have

overlooked something. Your watchword for this

month is ‘look before you leap.’

ARIES (March 21 – April 19)

TAURUS (April 21 – May 21)

GEMINI (May 22 – June 21)

CANCER (June 22 – July 22)

Your agile mind loves to have puzzles to solve, and

you are never happier than when you have solved a

problem. This makes you the perfect person to help

a friend in need of advice. But the easiest solution

is not always the best, listen to their heart as well

as their mouth!

Whatever goes up must come down. Look at this

the other way around – whatever goes down must

come up. There! Better now? Life is a seesaw, and

for you Down is really down. But you won’t be sitting

at the bottom for long, an Up is on its way, so dust

yourself off and get ready for it.

First a little info: although you expect

these giant birds to be bald, their name

comes from an old English word, 'balde'which actually means white. They really

are huge birds; their bodies on their own

can be up to 1 meter long and when theyspread their wings they can be up to 2.5

meters wide (that is from the floor to the

ceiling in our house!) They can also liveto be very old (in aminal standards), up

to 35 years or more.

Real AmericanBraves!

This month something very special; anamazing story about ‘Bald Eagles’ whowere on the brink of extinction untilnew laws helped to protect them.

Amazing animalskids page52

They feed mostly on fish and can spot one

up to nearly two kilometers away with

their AMAZING eyesight!

So here is a story our friend Mike Foulkestold us about some bald eagles in America

who became very very brave because they

were so hungry (the weather was so coldthe fish were hiding at the bottom of the

river). Some kind people decided to feed

the eagles with fish to help them surviveand here are some amazing photos! You

can see how close the people were to the

eagles, this is something very special!

HITTING THE HIGH NOTES!!

At the end of last year Smooth Radio held a 12hour marathon to raise money for the Hogar

San Agustin Children’s Home in Vera.

Presenters did requests for donations. The areareally came on board and 20 local businessestook the donation tins and request forms.Listeners were very generous and the dayraised 346.25€!

This money is being spent on covering the costsof a FAB day out for the kids at Rancho Luz delSol in Partaloa. About 17 children from 3-17years, plus nuns and helpers will be able toenjoy pony rides, horse treks and quad biking.Jay is getting them t-shirts and laying on afull bar-b-que. A bouncy castle has beendonated for the day from Courtney castles andthere will be face painting by Lianne Bamfordof Sol yoga centre.

A huge thank you to the Smooth team, thekind and generous listeners without whom thisday would not be taking place, local businesssupport and to Jay and Erika from Rancho Luzdel Sol for offering to lay on such a spectacularday and go the extra mile.
