Boilers. Put on this Earth to stress andanger us. Just why is it that they alwayscause problems a) when we least expectit, b) when we have visitors or c) whenwe really crave a nice hot bath.My boiler decided to pack up early in themorning, causing my entire electricity totrip out. At first I thought it was just an-other power cut, or a problem caused bythe workers digging up the communalswimming pool for the fourth year run-ning.So I stuck my head outside the front doorand asked the maintenance man, whoseemed more interested in sweeping theremaining debris, than helping me get tothe bottom of my problem. He kindlysuggested that there could be a short cir-cuit in my apartment, which was causingthe entire electricity flow to cut out. I feltlike telling him not to be so bloody un-helpful and come and take a look, con-sidering he drives a white van whichdons the words ‘electrician’ and‘plumber’ (in Spanish).Seething, I returned to my apartmentand opened that little door where theelectricity switches live. After a generoushelping of trial and error I concluded thatthe failing instrument was my waterboiler; that large, ugly device, hidden be-hind a fake cupboard door in the kitchen.This wasn’t the first time it had causedme headaches, so I naturally despised italready. A couple of years ago it decidedto empty its entire contents over mykitchen at 4am, while I was busy sleep-ing. I only woke up after dreaming about wetting myself. I seriously needed theloo in real life and after relieving myselfcontinued hearing the sound of gushingwater…Needless to say it was comingfrom the kitchen. That damn boiler.Itsoaked my whole towel supply, plus atleast anything that stood at least twoinches from my floor. What a morning!

Back to the here and now I tried callinga plumber. The day was Friday and theyall seemed to be in weekend mode al-ready. “I can call by on Monday,” was the typi-cal response.I decided that the economic crisis inSpain couldn’t be nearly as bad aseveryone was making out.Dozens of phone calls later, and myhead throbbing rapidly, a plumber withthe name of Jose Luis saved the dayand said he would call past on Saturday– using that word we love to hear –mañana!A funny little chap, five foot nothing, withglasses and a cheeky grin entered myapartment equipped with more toolsthan a ferreteria. He deemed said boileras ‘strange’ and unscrewed the bottomto take half of it away with him. Now I’ve seen lime scale before, butmine contained almost a kilogram of thestuff. I didn’t go so far to drag out myscales, but it’s a valid guesstimate.Jose Luis returned on Monday, after awhole three days without hot water, to fixthe problem once and for all (I hope).He’s here right now actually and I canhear all manner of suspicious noisescoming from the kitchen. Think it’s forthe best that I stay here! And hopefully, by the time you read this,I’ll enjoy the luxury of hot baths again…

A British man has been appointed as thenew caretaker of an Australian tropicalisland.Ben Southall, 34, a charity fundraiserfrom Petersfield, Hampshire, emergedfrom a field of 35,000 applicants.The six-month position, advertised as"the best job in the world", requires himto live on Hamilton Island, on Queens-land's Great Barrier Reef.Mr Southall was chosen from among 16finalists "competing" for the £73,500 po-sition. Gilly’s Fabric Workshop, based in thebeautiful lakeside village of Jayena,is now a main player in the uphol-stery and soft furnishings industry,based in the areas of Axarquia andGranada…

Run by Gilly and husband Martyn, Gilly’sFabric Workshop was first establishedsome 25 years ago from Bournemouth.The business gained a solid reputationin the local area and beyond, providingjust about everything linked to uphol-stery and soft furnishings. From recov-ering patio furniture, to a completere-upholsture of a 3-piece-suite, throughto dressing a bare window with made-to-measure curtains, Gilly’s Fabric Work-shop soon gained larger and moreprestigious contracts. This eventually ledthem to providing ideas and products forsome of the trendiest bars and restau-rants on the South coast of the UK.A few years back, and with the kids outthe way, Gilly and Martyn made a dreamcome true when they moved to Spain fora more peaceful life. Gilly’s Fabric Work-shop moved with them. It flourished inthe Granada province and now, due todemand for their skills in made-to-measure soft furnishings, it has also ex-panded into the Axarquia region. Gilly learnt to use a sewing machine atthe age of nine and since then has per-fected techniques with just about everyfabric under the sun, as well as becom-

ing a specialist with leather too.

Jellyfish

Summer is always met with an out-break of jellyfish (medusa) along theSpanish coast, so what better seacreature to explore in the month ofJune. Just mind out for that sting!

�Jellyfishes are made up of more than95% water. Their bodies are soft andlack a skeletal structure or outer shell.They are delicate and easily damaged.Jellyfishes require water to help supporttheir body and if removed from theiraquatic surroundings, they collapse anddie.

�A jellyfish has a simple digestive sys-tem with only one opening. A jellyfishtakes food in through its mouth which islocated on the underside if its belly.Waste material is passed out throughthe mouth.

�To move forward, jellyfishes take waterinto their muscular bell and then squirt itout behind them, creating a jet of waterthat propels the jelly forward. In additionto this form of movement, jellies also drifton water currents to move.

�A group of jellyfish is called a 'smack'.Jellyfish feed on small protozoa, largemetazoa and other small fish in the sea.They generally trap these in their tenta-cles. Some jellyfish do not have tenta-cles at all.

�Jellyfish are generally not dangerousto humankind. However, some jellyfishcan be very toxic, and cause deaths inhumans. A jellyfish sting is extremelypainful and can also cause various aller-gies in humans.�Jellyfishes have no brain, no blood, andno nervous system. Their senses areprimitive and consist of a neural net, eyespots that can sense light from dark, andchemosensory pits that help them iden-

tify potential prey.

�A jellyfishes' body consists of threelayers. The outer layer is called the epi-dermis, the inner layer which lines thegastrovascular cavity is called the gas-trodermis, and the middle layer consistsof a thick substance called themesoglea.

�The size and colour of jellyfish differfrom species to species. While somespecies are almost transparent, somespecies have vivid colours like red, pur-ple, blue and pink. While some jellyfishare only a few centimetres wide andhave no tentacles, the largest knownspecies of jellyfish can grow up to 8 feetwide with tentacles of more than 120feet in length.

�The largest known species of jellyfishthat has been found anywhere in themarine waters of the world is the Lion'sMane Jellyfish or Cyanea Capillata.They are known to roam the frigid coldwaters of the Artic Sea, the North At-lantic Sea and the northern PacificOcean. The largest amongst the speciesare only found at the very top of thenorthern hemisphere, and nowherebelow 42 degree N latitude. Some of thesmaller jellyfish of the species havebeen found around Australia and NewZealand.

The importance of walking, my kind ofthinking!

Walking can add minutes to your life. Thisenables you at 85-years-old to spend anadditional 5 months in a nursing home at7,000€ per month.

My grandpa started walking five miles aday when he was 60. Now he's 97 yearsold and we don't know where he is.

I like long walks, especially when they aretaken by people who annoy me.

The only reason I would take up walking isso that I could hear heavy breathing again.

I have to walk early in the morning, beforemy brain figures out what I'm doing..

I joined a health club last year, spent about400€. Haven't lost a pound. Apparentlyyou have to go there.

Every time I hear the dirty word 'exercise',I wash my mouth out with chocolate.

I do have flabby thighs, but fortunately mystomach covers them.

The advantage of exercising every day isso when you die, they'll say,'Well, she looks good doesn't she.'

If you are going to try cross-country skiing,start with a small country.

I know I got a lot of exercise the last fewyears, just getting over the hill.

We all get heavier as we get older, be-cause there's a lot more information in ourheads. That's my story and I'm sticking toit.

Every time I start thinking too much abouthow I look, I just find a Happy Hour and bythe time I leave I look just fine.

Ever thought about growing yourown produce? Don talks all aboutrenting an allotment...

Last month I saw an advert in The Sen-tinella for the rental of allotments closeto the centre of Velez-Malaga. Havingowned an allotment in England I rangJose and arranged to meet him andhave a look. When we arrived I met hiswife, Alice and their two-year-old son,Samuel. Samuel took charge and gaveus a tour of the site, pointing out variouspoints of interest, including chickens,baby goats and green tomatoes. Afterthe tour I was so impressed I decided totake a plot on. Samuel could have agood career in the future as an estateagent.All the plots are 10 x 5m and have theirown water supply, plus there’s a toilet onsite. As in England, many of the plotholders have built tool sheds of variousshapes and sizes, the odd barbequeand a few of them keep chickens andducks.A week later, Paul, who is sharing theplot with me, purchased variousplantlets from nearby Hermanos Jeromoand we planted out courgettes, toma-toes, peppers, melons, onions and let-

tuce to name a few. We also installed a drip watering sys-tem. Normally you would plan what togrow, but this late in the year we willgrow whatever is available. Next yearwe will grow most of our plants fromseed, which will give us a greaterchoice. If anyone is interested in rentinga plot Jose would be more than happyto hear from you.Now June is here it is unlikely we will en-counter rain for a few months so it’s im-portant that we water on a regular basis,especially new plantings of trees andshrubs. You will still have three or fourweeks to plant new shrubs, but after theend of June I suggest you wait until theautumn. The exception to this rule arethe planting of succulents, cacti andpalms, but they will require regular wa-tering throughout the summer.Jose has an advert in the business di-rectory in the back of The Sentinella thismonth, or you can call me (Don) and I´llbe more than happy to pass you hisnumber. We arrived in Malagaat 6pm. By the time wehad collected our lug-gage and found thehire car office, it waspast 8pm. There was along queue in the of-fice, with many cus-tomers complainingabout this and that.When we got to the

front, it was gone 9pm, the charges werehigher than we’d been told and the carwe’d requested, with a roof rack, wasnot available. All in all, a lot of hassleand we were happy to pull out of the carpark at 10pm.Driving along the motorway, both tiredand hungry, I casually turned to Jan.‘Did you put my big red rucksack in thecar?’‘No,’ she said, then suddenly let out ascream,‘My handbag!’In a sickening moment, we realised wehad left the rucksack and the handbag,which contained our banker’s draft,credit cards, cash wallet, villa purchasedocuments, English house keys in thecar hire office. We could not get to the

next exit of the motorway fast enough.All sorts of thoughts ran through our-heads, I knew Jan was going completelydoolally and I was not doing a rain danceeither.Would the car hire office be open whenwe got back? We couldn’t even phonethem because the mobile phones werein Jan’s handbag too.Our life savings and dream villa seemeda long way away in those long, tensemoments. At the car hire office, Jan wasout of the car before I’d even put thehand brake on. And there it all was, stillon the pavement, next to where our carhad been parked. We were so happythat we forgot to discuss who was toblame. We reached our hotel in Caleta at 1am,had dinner and wine and fell into bedhappy to have escaped the disaster of alifetime.

Last month I gleefully announced thatthe local lemon growers were finallyearning a decent wage for their toils.This was true at the time of going topress. Two days later, however, the priceper kilo had dropped by 70 per cent, anda fortnight after that a neighbour took hisvan load of bagged fruit to market andreceived 8€. To add insult to injury wehave noticed that some local shops arein fact selling imported lemons, so wenow have boxes of locally grown ecolog-ical fruit at La Vaqueria in an effort tohelp these farmers. 'Ecological' meansthat the trees have not been sprayedwith chemicals for more than two yearsand only chemical free fertilizers havebeen used. When a grower has kept hissoil chemical free for ten years or over,he may apply to become organic, but ifhis neighbour's trees are not chemicalfree he has to take care of the first rowof the next plot also, in order that hisown trees are not contaminated. After drinking wine for two hours to dis-cover all this, I was completely incredu-lous that anyone in his right mind wouldstill want to grow lemons. My informant'sface lit up as he patiently explained whata wonderful tree the lemon is. Not asthirsty as the avocado or mango, themarvellous lemon tree produces not justone crop but three per year and eachone has its own name!The main harvest comes between Sep-tember and December depending on theweather and is referred to as thecosecha, which literally means 'the har-vest'. This is the time to gather the fruit.It is followed by the retardio, from Febru-ary to May, when the lemons which areleft over from the cosecha are collected.These may be slightly blemished insome way, be smaller or have morepips. “Seconds” if you like! And then

from June to August, comes the SanJuanero gathering, named after SaintJohn the Baptist, whose festival falls inthe summer. X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Despite its clumsy title, this film has astronger story to tell this time around, fo-cusing on the character of Wolverine.Hugh Jackman serves as a very solidanchor for the cast and the film, manag-ing to occasionally deliver the trademarkwit that has made the character so well-loved. The film starts off with a very ef-fective prologue, which shows a youngLogan (aka Wolverine) and his brotherVictor (eventually played by LievSchreiber) as they live through count-less wars, but eventually become atodds over Victor's thirst for blood versusLogan's quest for peace and respect forlife. Although the story is strong, its exe-cution is not done with any dramatic flairor memorable character moments, leav-ing a film that will probably not move youone way or the other, even when a coolaction scene presents itself. Hugh Jack-man, although carrying the film with hisstrong presence, looks a little lost thistime, compared to the previous films,and looks to have been held back in al-lowing the character to develop moretrademark wit and dimension. DannyHuston is the weakest link in the cast,and unfortunately, he is playing the partof the main villain, Stryker. Veteran actorBrian Cox played an older Stryker in X-Men 2 and was far superior to Huston'spale imitation. Patrick Stewart also has acameo as Professor Xavier, which waswelcome, except for the digital alteringto his face looks worse than a botchedplastic surgery job. At the end of the day,"X-Men: Origins" is a reasonable film buta better director would have made a fan-tastic movie from this story.
