Life and Legacy,

Jewish Intermarriage/

Outreach, Israel,

Gratitude

On the first night of Sukkot, Ju-

dy and I were honored to host in

our backyard about 70 adult members of our Congregation

who have signed Letters of Intent to participate in Mosaic

Law Congregation’s ATID Life and Legacy Fellowship.

It was an elegant evening with wine and a delicious dinner

catered by Aharona Catering (kosher of course). One high-

light of the evening was the amazing viewing of the lunar

eclipse. The evening's combination of a super blood moon

and a lunar eclipse is a rare occurrence that hasn’t hap-

pened for 30 years and will not happen again until 2033.

When the Lunar Eclipse was completely visible we all

recited a special blessing: Baruch Atta Ado-noy Elo-hai-nu

Melech ha'olam osei ma'asei vereisheet. Blessed are You,

L-rd our G-d, Sovereign of the universe, who reenacts the

works of the wonders of creation. After making Kiddush

in the Sukkah we heard remarks from Legacy Chairs,

MLC Past Presidents Caren Zorman and Dr. Steve Polan-

sky who thanked everyone for insuring the future of Mosa-

ic Law by agreeing to leave a gift in their will/estate to the

synagogue. This important endeavor will insure that the

synagogue will be able to sustain itself financially and that

the future generations of Mosaic Law members will not

have to rely solely on membership dues to cover its ex-

penses. It is a no-brainer. Most successful non-profit or-

ganizations, especially churches and synagogues, must

rely on the generosity of its members and the creation of

an endowment. Membership dues alone cannot sustain the

operation of our shul. There will be other such events spe-

cifically for ATID Fellowship donors in the future. One

such event is our April 3rd Legacy Trip to Poland and Is-

rael. This special trip will include meetings with the lead-

ership of Krakow and Warsaw as well as meetings with

leaders of the Knesset in Israel. We are also awaiting word

as to potential meetings with Israel’s President Reuven

Rivlin and Chairman of the Jewish Agency, Natan Sha-

ransky. The trip is open to any and all members of Mosaic

Law who have signed a Letter of Intent to participate in

our Life and Legacy Campaign. It is not too late to sign

up. Contact Caren Zorman at [email protected] or

Steve Polansky at [email protected] for further

information. I sincerely hope that many of you who have

not yet signed a Letter of Intent will consider participating

in this important program and consider joining Judy and

me on this special Legacy Tour this coming April.

For those of you who attended our services on Rosh

Hashanah, you know that I delivered what was probably

one of the most challenging sermons I have ever given in

my tenure as rabbi of our synagogue (to read the text, go

to: https://mosaiclaw.org/sites/default/files/images/

tion as a result of the sermon which have all affirmed that

the topic I raised has indeed hit a chord. As a follow-up to

the sermon, I am pleased to announce that Rabbi Charles

Sacramento USY

By Ilana Clay Rub

SUSY’s year is off to a fantastic start! We kicked off the year with a pool par-

ty at the home of the Kurzrocks and had a blast catching up with each other

while getting excited for the year ahead. We then dove right into the High

Holidays and ran services and programming to learn ruach, discuss issues sur-

rounding homelessness and to broaden our Hebrew vocabulary. We are look-

ing forward to New Frontier’s Yom Theme Park on October 18th – it will be a

day for 6th through 12th graders to catch all the rides at Six Flags. Please reg-

ister your Kadimaniks & USYers if you haven’t already!

Registration continues for International Convention, taking place in Baltimore,

MD, from December 27th-31st. There will be a pre-convention hosted for our

New Frontier region in a DC area community from December 23rd-26th. The

Convention is an incredible week of sightseeing, learning and lots of fun spent

with hundreds of Jewish teenagers from all over North America.

Finally (for the moment…) please mark your calendars for November 15th.

SUSY will be hosting its first-ever USY Concert! Details will be announced

but look forward to a beautiful evening of music with USY. If you have any

questions about these or other upcoming events, or need to receive registration

forms to register your USYer, please email [email protected].

the Conservative Movement. Ten years later, FJMC’s

Keruv (Outreach) Initiative for understanding intermar-

riage involves more than 65 congregations and approxi-

mately 87 volunteers in various stages of repositioning

their synagogues to meet the challenge of demographic

change. We will now be joining those other congrega-

tions and I am delighted that longtime MLC members, Dr.

Andy and Anita Kincaid, have agreed to attend a special

training weekend in November in Chicago at Anshei Emet

Synagogue, sponsored by the FJMC. The training assists

in developing a carefully crafted plan to work with con-

gregational rabbis, as partners, to welcome and include

intermarried families into our synagogue community and

those searching for an inclusive synagogue. I plan on es-

tablishing a Keruv Team for our congregation to create

ways to make Mosaic Law a more welcoming and inclu-

sive synagogue for interfaith families. If you are interested

in working with me on this project, I encourage you to

email me at [email protected]. With the Jewish inter-

marriage rate at an escalating 58%, we must address this

issue which I consider to be an existential one for the fu-

ture of the Jewish People in our country.

As you consider your plans for next summer, I urge you

and your family to consider joining me for a Multi-

Generational Family Tour to Israel June 26-July 8 with an

optional extension to Eilat and Petra, Jordan. Included in

this tour will be a special group Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremo-

ny at the egalitarian section of the Western Wall. We have

three families who have made the commitment to join us

on this tour. Many who have traveled to Israel on Mosaic

Law trips know how unique this experience will be. It

will be unlike any tour/trip to Israel you have ever experi-

enced. Please do not delay as airfares have a tendency to

increase closer to the departure dates. For further infor-

mation go to: http://israeltour.com/rtaff2016/.

Lastly, I want to thank all of the volunteers who gracious-

ly contributed to our recent High Holyday services. The

choir, adult and junior soloists, the lay Ba’alei Tefillah

(chanters), Torah and Haftarah Readers, leaders of the

prayers for our Country, Israel, Peace and the Martyrology

Readings all added to the spirituality of our prayer experi-

ence over Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The ushers,

the runners and Bima volunteers all made the services

seamless and we are grateful to all of the volunteers who

led our family and youth services. Our Baalei Tokeah, Dr.

Ben Glovinsky and Michael Levy inspired us with the

sounding of the Shofar and Kate Provance did an out-

standing job in her first High Holyday stint as our volun-

teer Gabbai Rishon. The Honors Committee and Ritual

Team as always, do a stellar job in assigning and assisting

during the High Holydays. We are always grateful to

those who provided flowers to beautify our Bima and to

those volunteers who sponsored the reception and break-

fast on the first night of Rosh Hashanah and after the

Ne’ilah Service on Yom Kippur. And our office staff and

maintenance staff deserve tremendous thanks for all of the

hours and effort to help make these holydays run smooth-

ly. Lastly, Todah Rabah to our Hazzan, Cantor Ben Ros-

ner for inspiring us with his leadership of our High

Holyday services.

I hope that many of you will join us for the services which

will conclude our holiday season: Shabbat Under the

Stars at 7:30pm on Friday, October 3rd, Shmini Atzeret

and Yizkor is on Monday, October 5th and don’t forget

Simchat Torah services on Monday night October 5th at

7pm and the following morning, Tuesday, October 6th at

9am. I hope to see many of you at Capital Christian Cen-

ter on Sunday, October 11th for CUFI’s Annual Night to

Honor Israel. And don’t forget to join us for the special

Persian Scholar-in-Residence Weekend, October 16-18 as

world renowned Cantor Farid Dardashti will be our guest

scholar.

As I mentioned on Yom Kippur Day during my sermon,

consider joining us on Shabbat mornings to nourish our

spiritual souls followed by Kiddush lunch to nourish our

bodies :).

Wishing you and your family a Chag Samayach,

Rabbi Reuven Taff

October Bat Mitzvah

Shalom! I am Talia Friedman. I will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on October 10th. My Torah portion is

Bereshit, which tells the story of the creation of the world.

I am a 7th grader at Sutter Middle School in Sacramento and a graduate of Shalom School. I spend my time hanging out

with my friends, writing and making movies. I also play soccer and softball and am a first degree black belt in Tae Kwon

Do and I also play saxophone and piano.

My Torah portion speaks of the wonders of God’s creations and how we are commanded to care for them. My mitzvah

project allows me to fulfill this mitzvah by helping at Happy Tails Cat Sanctuary. I also spent time this summer in New

Mexico helping at a therapeutic horseback riding program on the Ramah Navajo Reservation helping the disabled riders.

I am looking forward to sharing this special day with family and friends, many of whom are coming from far away.

Thank you to everyone who has helped prepare me for this special day!
