The Scandinavia Show 2010 | Food

Scandinavian food and drink is well-known for being fresh and fragrant, with alot of natural ingredients and flavours. The influences are often drawn straightfrom nature, and the flavours also repre-sent this ideal. Michael Boaler, BrandManager for Finlandia Vodka, wants topromote this same concept: “Finlandiarepresents all that is pure about Finland –from our locally sourced ingredients tothe nature from which we are born.”

Another very Scandinavian trait is the im-portance of healthy ingredients, which isvery much interlinked with the natural ori-gin of the produce. “With Scandinaviancuisine and the Nordic diet at the forefrontof the British consumer’s mind, we lookforward to seeing a range of visitors atthe event, enthused by the exciting andhealthy lifestyle of all our Northern Euro-pean neighbours,” says Matt Levett, Mar-keting Executive of Norseland. “We will

also have the chance to let visitors try ourrange of fantastic cheeses and get feed-back.”

Promoting Brand Scandinavia

The specific foods and brands that Scan-dies really love are an integral part ofScandinavian identity and culture. Thereare some ‘Marmites’ among them, ofcourse, such as salmiakki (salty liquorice)which is one of those ‘love it or hate it’products. But most of the food is very ac-

cessible to everyone. Lynne Dickens, Mar-keting Consultant for Danish Food Direct, talks about the impact of their part of theexhibition: “We are bringing in some fan-tastic new products to launch at the show, many of which are extremely nutritiousand equally delicious. Hopefully there willbe plenty of visitors who have never triedit before and will become converts fromthat moment on, as well as Scandinavianswho will be delighted to find so manyhome comforts available here in the UK.”

Nordic food & drink inspired by naturePlease listen to the grumbling in your tummy, and make your way to the food stands at The Scandinavia Show for ataste and a tipple of the best Scandinavian produce and brands out there. What you are looking forward to mostabout the upcoming Scandinavia Show inLondon?

I love London! I used to live there in theearly 80s. I was working as a waitress insomething called Adam’s OriginalBarbeque Rib House, on the corner ofEarl’s Court Road and Old BromptonRoad (long gone now, may it rest inpeace). I was, most certainly, the worstwaitress in London. I’m not giving you anydetails on this; you have to take my wordfor it… So I am looking forward tobreathing some London air, and ofcourse, I can’t wait to introduce mybooks to the British audience. (Andhopefully I’ll get to eat some Swedishherring!)

There is a big demand for Scandinaviancrime literature at the moment. Is it theStieg Larsson effect, or do you think ithas been a slower, more subtle processthan that?

I think the sudden demand for Scandina-vian crime is a total Stieg Larsson effect.

We’ve had high quality in crime fiction fora number of years, but the Millenniumbooks made the world realize it. It’shelped all the other Scandinavian authorsreach a bigger crowd abroad. Yes, me too.Bless you, Stieg.

You’ve just published a book togetherwith James Patterson. How did thiscollaboration come about?

Jim’s agent called my agent and askedme if I wanted to write a book with him. Iwas just about to take a year off fromwriting. I’d written 12 books in 12 yearsand needed some new thoughts in myhead, learn some new things, and getsome new experiences…. So I had justdecided to study Spanish for a year, fulltime, when I got the question: Would I liketo work with the biggest thriller writer inthe world? Discuss plot and characterand dialogue with him? Would I learnsome new things? Think some newthoughts? Get some new experiences? Ithought hard for about half a second, andthen I said: Sure! And I loved it!

The Scandinavia Show 2010 | Tasty Treats

Among the multitudes of exciting ex-hibitors, you will find representatives fromboth Madsen Restaurant and Scandina-vian Kitchen. These two London-basedScandi eateries know everything there isto know about the traditional Scandinavianclassics that are so popular with theircustomers. The show will thus be thor-oughly infused with their in-depth knowl-edge and infectious enthusiasm for Scan-dinavian cookery.

“We are very excited about the opportunityto reach a wider audience and help themget to know a bit about Scandinavianfood,” says Bronte Blomhoj, Founder ofScandinavian Kitchen. “Most people justknow meatballs and herring, but Scandi-navian food is about so much more thanthat. Daily, in our deli and café located inCentral London, we do just that: intro-duce people to the wonders of the opensandwich, the benefit of the humble ryebread and the superb ingredients we haveavailable. We see ourselves as mini am-bassadors for the food Scandinavians eat

at home as well as the Scandinavian hos-pitality and 'hygge'.”

Madsen Restaurant will also be sellingsome tasty samples of their famouslyfuss-free and healthy Scandinavian cook-ing. Their menu will include, amongstother things, handmade rye bread (some-thing all Scandinavians miss once theymove abroad) as well as some haddockand salmon fishcakes with their own re-moulade sauce.

“I think the show will help spread the wordabout Scandinavian design, Scandinaviaas a travel destination, and of course, itsfood heritage. I think it will also highlightfor the visitors where in London they canfind Scandinavian shops and products.Hopefully some new people will get theireyes opened to what Scandinavia has tooffer,” says Managing Director CharlotteKruse Madsen.
