The San Diego Hall of Champions, founded by Bob Breitbard, has been a vital part of the community for more than half a century. The mission of the Hall is to promote, recognize and preserve athletic achievement for the purpose of inspiring individu-als of all ages to reach their full potential.

True to that goal, the San Diego Hall of Champions is both a sports museum and an outreach orga-nization, an institution that honors champions, on and off the field, and encourages participation and the pursuit of excellence.

The San Diego Hall of Champions Sports Museum continues to seek new and exciting programs and exhibits based on the core values that have made the San Diego Hall of Champions a San Diego civic treasure for over five decades.

Alan R. KiddPresident, San Diego Hall of Champions

Now in his sixth year at the San Diego Hall of Champions, Kidd continues to use his 32-plus years of marketing, advertising and business experience to lead the Hall through numerous changes and improvements, including the recent consolidation with the San Diego Sports Commission.

Since arriving at the Hall of Champions, Kidd has instituted a number of educational programs, includ-ing the cornerstone of youth education outreach, the Champions Sports Academy.

CSA alone puts on a number of camps and clinics within San Diego. The Junior Player Development Program provides free football camps for inner-city youth as well as youth baseball clinics in underserved local areas. It hosts youth football coaching clinics, the Youth Football Coaching Academy by USA Football, and the Junior Seau College Recruiting Symposium for high school students, parents and guidance counselors. In 2009, CSA will roll out its new high school athlete leadership program.

Kidd is a founding member of the San Diego City Schools Athletic Founda-tion, co-founder of the Serra High School Foundation, has served on the San Diego County Board of Education Substance Abuse Committee and sat on the San Diego City Schools Business Roundtable.

Kidd and his wife, Nancy, reside in Tierrasanta. The couple has two adult children, Brian and Sara.

Bruce BinkowskiMaster of Ceremonies

Guests at the 11th annual San Diego High School Coaching Legends Induction Dinner will be privileged to hear a legend in his own right -- Bruce Binkowski. Binkowski was hired as the first employee of the Holiday Bowl in 1978 and was named Executive Director in 2001.

Binkowski was also an enthusiastic supporter of the creation of a second bowl game in San Diego, and was named the first executive director of the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl

in 2005. Binkowski has been affiliated with San Diego sports teams since he worked in public relations for the NBA Rockets in 1970-71.

A graduate of the University of San Diego, Binkowski is known as the “Voice of San Diego.” He served as public address announcer for the San Diego Chargers (23 years) and Padres (14 years), as well as San Diego State University Aztecs football and basketball (20 years). He has also served as public address announcer for two World Series, two Super Bowls and one Major League Baseball All-Star Game. He worked in radio broadcasting at KOGO, KSON and KSDO for 17 years.

Binkowski has been married to Christina for over 29 years and has three children, Rocky, Brooke and Shannon, and three grandchildren, Cortni, Anthony and Darren. He is a longtime friend to the Hall of Champions, a “position” he proudly occupies.

MERITORIOUS ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

The Meritorious Achievement Award is being presented for the seventh time by the Legends Selection Committee of the San Diego Hall of Champions.

Eligible candidates must have served the CIF-SDS high school sports community with special distinction in areas including, but not limited to, community service, administration, media, sports medicine, coach-ing and officiating, in an outstanding manner for a minimum of 10 years with consideration given to integrity, sportsmanship, leadership and character.

Mike BasaloMeritorious Achievement Award

Mike Basalo began a 32-year career at San Pasqual High in 1972, coaching baseball, basketball and a softball. Dur-ing that time, Basalo’s softball teams won four Avocado League titles and built a record of 254-140-4.

After 40 years of officiating baseball and basketball at the high school, college and international level, including two

Olympics, Basalo was a 2009 inductee into the San Diego High School Officials Hall of Fame. He officiated four CIF-SDS basketball championships and has been the official scorer for 29 years. “The Golden Eagle” still serves the Section as the public address announcer for the CIF-SDS Football Championships, the Alex Spanos All-Star Football Game and San Pasqual home games. He was also the tournament host for the section softball semifinals at Kit Carson Park for 16 years and the CIF-SDS softball tournament director from 2001-2008.

Ric BethelMeritorious Achievement Award

Ric Bethel was a teacher, coach, ASB director, athletic direc-tor and principal in the Vista Unified Schools for nearly 40 years. Bethel coached baseball for seven years at Vista High and started the Panthers’ girls soccer program in 1981. Vista advanced to the CIF-SDS Section soccer semifinals from 1981-86 and the finals in 1983 and 1985.

Bethel’s career as an athletic director spanned 22 years at the district’s three high schools. He was named section athletic director of the year in 1999, the same year he was inducted into the Vista High Hall of Fame. Bethel was honored with the San Diego High School Sports Association Service Award in 2000. Since retiring in 2003 as principal of Guajome Park Academy, Bethel has been involved in numerous vol-unteer activities, including the San Diego High School Coaching Legends Selection Committee for six years, serving two years as its chair.

Lawrence Carr*Meritorious Achievement Award

During his coaching days, Lawrence Carr mentored several students who became nationally known athletes. Among them was a Hoover High baseball player named Ted Williams. Carr’s 1935 football team at La Jolla High finished its undefeated season with a Metropolitan League championship.

Carr was also vice principal at Hoover High in 1936 before serving as vice princi-pal at San Diego High and being named the first principal at the new Kearny High in 1952. Carr later returned as principal to San Diego in 1954, where he stayed until his retirement in 1969. A 1925 graduate of Grossmont High, where he was student body president and a three-sport athlete, Carr was past president of the Downtown Kiwanis Club and the San Diego Administration Club.

Ed DavisMeritorious Achievement Award

A former three-sport high school athlete himself, Ed Davis served as a Little League head coach, as well as a volunteer assistant for Helix High in basketball, baseball and football. Davis also served as umpire-in-chief for Little League, CIF-SDS umpire and assistant football director for the Section.

While employed by SDG&E, Davis actively volunteered on the recreation committee, as well as coordinated the employee blood drive and served as United Way area director and president. Davis received recognition from the National Law Enforcement Officers, CIF-SDS, Helix High PTSA, San Diego High School Athletics Department and the Foothills United Methodist Church. He also served as the longtime director of the Mother Goose Parade and remains on the board of the San Diego High School Sports Association.

Anne L. RosserMeritorious Achievement Award

Anne Rosser began her teaching career at Oceanside High in 1961, continued at Madison High and retired from Mis-sion Bay High in 2002 after teaching and coaching badmin-ton, field hockey, gymnastics, swimming, tennis, water polo and drill team.

Rosser is currently serving the community in numerous ways. She is an active part of the Board of Directors for Youth Tennis San Diego, San Diego Senior Games, California Coaches Association, SDSU Alumni Chapter of the College of Arts and Letters, and the Citizens Diplomacy Council of San Diego. A graduate of Point Loma High and San Diego State, Rosser continues to teach fencing at the Gateway Summer School and supervise student teachers through the College of Education at SDSU.

THE SAN DIEGO COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL COACHING LEGENDS

For over 50 years, the San Diego Hall of Champions has championed the ideals and goals of high school athletics. In 1999, the Board of Trust-ees approved a proposal by the Hall’s Legends Selection Committee to honor retired high school coaches of San Diego County whose records and standing in the coaching community were exemplary.

The coaches inducted have demonstrated outstanding perfor-mance and sportsmanship both on and off the field of play. These qualified men and women were chosen from all eligible coaches throughout San Diego County. Guidelines for consideration in-clude a minimum of 10 years service as a varsity head coach.

Extensive research was initiated that cataloged the accomplish-ments of generations of local high school coaches. Following are the seven coaches to be honored this year as San Diego County High School Coaching Legends. Additional successful coaches will be identified and honored in future years. Funds continue to be raised for a permanent display at the San Diego Hall of Champions.

Mike KlepperMorse - Track & Field

After being hired by John Shacklett in 1976, Mike Klepper started his coaching career as head wrestling coach for six years, assistant track coach under Jim Cerveny for five seasons and an assistant football coach for 28 years -- 25 of those on the sideline with Shacklett.

After Cerveny left to SDSU in 1982, Shacklett encouraged Klepper to take over the Tigers’ boys track & field pro-

gram. In that role for 26 years, Klepper’s teams won eight Section titles, finished as runner-up four times and captured seven Eastern League titles with an overall dual record of 140-47. Klepper was named Section Track Coach of the Year five times, CIF Honor Coach in 1986 and State Boys Coach of the Year in 1991. In that same year, Morse was ranked No. 1 in the state by California Track News. Klepper is now retired from the San Diego Unified School District after 35 years, 33 at Morse.

Dan CranePoway/USDHS/Valhalla - Water Polo/Swimming & DivingDan Crane began his coaching career in 1981 at UC San Diego as the first coach for the university’s women’s water polo team. While continuing his education there, the former collegiate All-American moved on to coach at Valhalla High. After three years, Crane later began his teaching career at USDHS, coaching both swimming and diving and water polo for six years. He completed his coaching career with 15 years of service at Poway High. Over the years, his teams

collected five CIF-SDS championships, five runner-up finishes and 17 league titles, including 11 in a row from 1994-2004.

Throughout his coaching career, Crane served on the CIF-SDS Advisory Commit-tees for both water polo and swimming and diving. Crane is currently in his 22nd year as an educator and seventh as the athletic director at Poway High.

Rob PhillipsGrossmont/Monte Vista/Mount Miguel - Baseball

Rob Phillips saw his baseball career at Point Loma College translate into a two-year stint with the Cincinnati Reds. Soon afterwards, Phillips used that experience to turn a Monarchs baseball team that finished 1986 with a 1-24 record into a CIF-SDS Division I champion in 1990. In 1997, Phillips took over at Grossmont High, where his six section titles included four consecutive championships from 2005-

2008. In all, Phillips amassed a record of 328-153-3 and won seven league titles, while leading the Foothillers to the section title game in eight of his 15 years.

Phillips, who taught biology and science at Mount Miguel and Monte Vista, was BCA Western U.S. Coach of the Year and Cal-Hi Sports Coach of the Year in 2008. He was named the section coach of the year in 2007 and 2008 and Coach of the Year by the San Diego Hall of Champions in 2007.

James KnoxEastlake/Mar Vista - Volleyball

A graduate of Mar Vista High, Jim Knox returned to his alma mater to teach in 1971. Nine years later, he coached girls volleyball for the first time. In his second year as varsi-ty coach, the Mariners advanced to the postseason for the first time in any girls sport. His teams also won two league titles. When boys volleyball was approved as a CIF-SDS sport, he started a team at Mar Vista. Later, when Eastlake

High opened in 1991, Knox started both the girls and boys programs there. The Titans were perennial playoff teams, and the boys won a Division II section champi-onship in 1999.

Knox was selected the San Diego County Boys Volleyball Coach of the Year in 2001 before earning the same honor after the following girls season, his last at the helm of Eastlake. In 2007, Knox retired after 36 years as a teacher and coach.

David A. ThoennesUSDHS - Golf

After resigning his commission in the Navy, David Thoe-nnes joined the faculty at USDHS in 1964. Four years later, he added golf coach to his job title. For the next 33 years, Thoennes built a highly successful program, amassing a record of 424-170 that included a winning streak of 43 league victories from 1990-97. The Dons captured West-ern League titles in 14 of the final 15 years of Thoennes’

tenure, which also included 26 consecutive winning seasons from 1975-2001.

Thoennes coached three CIF-SDS individual champions -- Christy Erb (1986), Phil Mickelson (1987) and Manny Zerman (1988). He is the only coach to have high school teammates face each other in the finals of the U.S. Amateur Championship. Thoennes served over 25 years as the league representative on the section golf advisory committee and led in the development of a girls golf program at USDHS.

Don RutledgeWest Hills - Volleyball

Don Rutledge was introduced to high school athletics in 1989 when he was appointed the first varsity volleyball coach at West Hills High. During his impressive 17-year tenure, his teams won 66 consecutive Grossmont North matches, as well as 88 consecutive Grossmont Confer-ence matches. His teams’ dominance led to 11 consecutive league titles (1995-2006) and 16 postseason playoff berths.

Rutledge also guided the Wolf Pack to four CIF-SDS finals and two section titles.

Rutledge has coached in the San Diego Senior All-Star Volleyball Game multiple times. He also continues to be actively engaged in every facet of student life by being a valued member of the West Hills teaching staff, coaching softball and girls basketball, participating in the postseason seeding process for both girls and boys volleyball and serving as athletic director at West Hills.

Jerry WhitleyCarlsbad/El Camino - Softball

Earning the 1955 Avocado League Baseball Player of the Year was the start of a 50-year career in athletics for Jerry Whitley. After his military obligations and playing days ended, Whitley built El Camino High into a well-respected program, winning back-to-back CIF-SDS championships. He then moved onto Carlsbad High, where he led the Lancers to another Section title and earned section coach

of the year honors. Over 19 years, Whitley won over 300 games while building a pair of programs into winners.

In all, Whitley spent 20 years working with the boys and girls of North County, winning state and national titles coaching Little League, Bobby Sox and Pony League. For his efforts, he was named to the Boys and Girls Club of America Hall of Fame for Community Service.

Congratulations to all the honorees!

Debuted in 2007, the Coaching Legends pin is currently being worn proudly by many of the men and women listed on the pages of this program and at the induction banquet this evening.

Over the course of the year, the San Diego Hall of Champions Coaching Legends Selection Committee poured over stacks of documents in an effort to narrow down San Diego County’s long list of worthy candidates into the class honored this evening. In addition to selecting each year’s class, the com-mittee this year held another Legends Luncheon, which allowed the Coaching Legends to come together and enjoy each other’s company in a casual atmo-sphere. The committee also continued publishing a newsletter and distributing a specially designed pin to the Coaching Legends.

In memoriam...The High School Coaching Legends Selection Committee recently said goodbye to one of its own after the passing of Gerald “Jerry” Tooze. A member of the Legends Class of 2000, Jerry passed away on March 31, 2009.
