Dear Friends,

2012 was a year of many changes at The Salvation Army in Hampton Roads. In June, Majors Lewis and Jackie Reckline transferred to command the Greater DC area, and we were welcomed in time to see the name change from the Tidewater Area Command to Hampton Roads Area Command.

These were not the only changes…many lives were changed…for the better. In spite of difficult economic times, we are fortunate to report that we are putting every resource to work to the benefit of our community.

Last year, many people in need sought help because of financial hardships. With high temperatures, we were able to open cooling stations in Portsmouth

and Norfolk. We expanded day services (hygiene care, laundry, case work and counseling) for women from once a week to everyday. When the jet crashed and hurricane winds and waves left people in difficulty, we were there to assist. When the Holidays came, we were able to feed the hungry, visit the lonely, cloth the naked, and bring joy to the lives of children of all ages.

This year, we plan to open two after school programs, a school for performing arts, a lunch meal program for senior adults and a place where homeless men can transition into homes of their own.

And next year, The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Corps Community Center will open (May 2014).

OVERVIEWThe Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary of South Hampton Roads Evangeline Booth Award is given annually to women in the Hampton Roads community who embody and exemplify Ms. Booth’s motto, “There is no reward equal to that of doing the most good to the most people in the most need.”

Through your support of the Evangeline Booth Award, you are providing valuable and much needed funding to the homeless women and children in Hampton Roads who benefit from The Salvation Army’s transitional housing program. This program gives women up to 24 months to save money, learn skills, gain confidence and achieve stability for her family.

Additionally, by attending this event you support the work of women who strive to

improve our community.

OVERVIEWThe Salvation Army Kettle Krush 5k and One Mile Fun Run will bring awareness to The Salvation Army’s spring and summer programming as well as spring and summer needs. Sure, it’s a different season than the Red Kettles are typically used but the reason is the same, to raise funds and awareness of The Salvation Army’s mission to provide human services. This event promises to be fun for all ages and athletic abilities and a great way to learn more about The Salvation Army in

preparation for the 2014 opening of the Kroc Center.

OVERVIEWThe Dwight C. Schaubach Golf Classic benefitting The Salvation Army is a direct supporter of The Salvation Army’s Thanksgiving and year-round feeding programs.

The Salvation Army serves more than 1,000 families a month with food supplements and served Thanksgiving meals to more than 800 individuals in 2012.

The Dwight C. Schaubach Golf Classic is a Four Person Pro Am Florida Best Ball (5 flights, post flighted). The tournament is limited to the first 25 teams to register with payment.

A pre-tournament deli buffet luncheon and post tournament BBQ hosted by Schaubach Family at Bridgeview Farm estate are offered as well as on-course soft drinks and snacks and tee gift.

OVERVIEWThe Salvation Army’s annual Christmas Distribution program provides more than 7,500 south Hampton Roads families with toys, clothing and food for their households, in all, more than 25,000 individuals are assisted through the week-long distribution.

More than 2,000 volunteers bring energy and enthusiasm to the operation

that, at times, serves 75 families every 15 minutes.
