The Holy Prophet

Muhammad(saw) prophesied

that the Promised Messiah(as)

would be raised near a

white minaret, east of

Damascus. This prophecy

was fulfilled with the advent

of the Promised Messiah(as)

from Qadian, India, a city

directly east of Damascus.

The Promised Messiahand imam mahdi and founder of

the review of religions

Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as), the Promised Messiah and Mahdi was born to a noble family in Qadian, India.  From an early age he had a keen interest in religion and developed a love for the Holy Prophet Muhammad(saw). He was also known for his honesty, friendliness and resolve. Over time his knowledge and understanding of religion and its application to society deepened. Being a Muslim it was his firm belief that all religions were true at their source but with the passage of time had drifted away from their original teachings; he upheld the dignity of religion and demonstrated its relevance to everyone.

His earnest defence of religion was ultimately blessed when he started to receive direct revelation from Allah

– a blessing that he continued for the rest of his life.

His mission was to revitalise the truth that all religions held within them and to revive the teachings of Islam. It was through this that he would bring mankind together and establish everlasting peace.

In 1889, under Divine Guidance, Hadhrat Ahmad(as) founded the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community – a community that has since grown in its stature and strength and has remained active in conveying the message of Islam to the ends of the earth.

Hadhrat Ahmad(as) had established himself as a respected writer and had written over 80 books. His writings have been translated into more than 60 languages and continue to inspire readers to this day. One of his greatest scholarly works was The Philosophy of the Teachings of Islam, prepared as a paper and read out at the Conference of Great Religions in 1896.

He also wrote a fascinating treatise in 1899 entitled Jesus in India, a book that uncovered remarkable evidence of Jesus(as)’s journey to India. In 1902 the Promised Messiah(as) initiated The Review of Religions which has covered a vast array of topics on religion, philosophy and contemporary issues of the day. It is the longest running English magazine in defence of Islam and the values it teaches.

From 1889 until the time of his demise in 1908 tens of thousands of people accepted him. This blessing has continued and will continue through his Khalifas (successors).

Currently under the fifth successor, we are seeing that the tide of acceptance is worldwide and that the message of Prophet Ahmad(as) has really reached the ends of the earth.

editorial

At the end of the 19th Century a devout Muslim, Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as), made an incredible claim. He declared that he was the Promised Messiah whose advent had been eagerly anticipated by the followers of the major religions He pledged to remove people from immoral and impure practices and would stem the tide of darkness that had engulfed the entire world. Yet he was a solitary figure in a tiny and unknown village of India called Qadian. He was without adequate resources to carry out his mission. The Muslims who had declared him the champion of Islam for his fearless defence of Islam and scholarly works now became his staunch enemies. He was mocked, ridiculed and persecuted even by some of his relatives.

It seemed humanly impossible for Hadhrat Ahmad(as) to achieve such lofty aims. However the support of God manifested upon his Messiah in a phenomenal manner. “So many signs have been manifested for me” he said, “as defy counting”. These signs have been repeatedly discussed in this magazine, and there are countless books and literature written on this topic for our readers to study (visit www.reviewofreligions.org and www.alislam.org). At the time of his passing, Hadhrat Ahmad(as) had hundreds of thousands of loyal followers and his truthfulness had been demonstrated through the display of thousands upon thousands of signs. Some of these signs, he explained, would also be repeated or fulfilled afterwards in other ways through his Successors (Khulafa). Over the last

century, the signs of Divine Succour have been seen in the lives of the Successors of the Promised Messiah(as) in magnificent fashion.

On 27th June 2012, an incredible prophecy was seen manifested when Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad(aba), Khalifatul Masih V(aba) visited Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Leading congressmen, senators and policymakers would confer upon His Holiness such respect and honour that would not have humanly been possible unless the manifestation of the Divine Will provided its Succour. Over 100 years ago a solitary individual would claim that he was the Promised Messiah(as) who would conquer the hearts of the people of the world through Divine Support. A century later, his representative and

Successor, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad(aba), at the home of American political power in the most powerful nation in the world, would deliver a lecture presenting true Islam to some of the most influential and important lawmakers on the planet.

“The pioneers in the colonisation of American land are always looked upon with great honour and respect. Their work was temporal, but … Allah the Almighty has made you the pioneers in the spiritual colonisation of the Western world. If you will work with the same love, zeal, sincerity and loyalty as they did, your honour and respect and name will be still greater than theirs, as you will have moreover the reward of the Last Day and Allah’s pleasure, the grandeur and beauty of which no one can estimate here in this world.” --Hadhrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmood Ahmad(ra), Khalifatul Masih II, July 1921

At 32 years old, Khalifatul Masih II(ra), the second Successor to the Promised Messiah(as) and second worldwide Head

of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, penned these words for the inaugural issue of The Muslim Sunrise, which is now the longest-running American Muslim magazine. His courageous message inspired the handful of Ahmadi Muslims who had either newly arrived on the shores of the United States or embraced Ahmadiyyat as indigenous Americans.

Nearly a century later, we can affirm the prescience of Khalifatul Masih II’s vision for Ahmadiyyat in the United States, punctuated most recently with a grand reception for Khalifatul Masih V(aba), the current head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, at U.S. Capitol Hill. The United States was officially introduced to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community

on February 15, 1920 with the arrival of Hadhrat Mufti Muhammad Sadiq(ra), the first American Muslim missionary, in Philadelphia. In less than four years, spurred by Khalifatul Masih II’s pronouncement, Missionary Sadiq launched The Muslim Sunrise, founded one of the first American Muslim mosques in Chicago, delivered hundreds of lectures across the States, converted over 700 Americans to Ahmadiyyat and, perhaps most significantly, cultivated the first crop of American Ahmadi Muslim “pioneers” that Khalifatul Masih II spoke about. Through the tireless services of the missionaries who would follow, led by Sufi Mutiur Rahman Bangalee, Ahmadiyyat gained further ascendancy, and by 1933, had

establishments in New York, St. Louis, Dayton, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New Jersey and Baltimore. By 1950, Ahmadi Muslim leaders had exchanged communications with a wide range of distinguished audiences, from famed innovators Thomas Edison and Henry Ford to U.S. Presidents Herbert Hoover and Franklin Roosevelt, and established the first American Muslim mosque in Washington D.C. The efforts of the American Ahmadi Muslim pioneers reached a new peak with personal visits of the Khulafa of Ahmadiyyat. On July 25, 1976, Hadhrat Mirza Nasir Ahmad(ra), Khalifatul Masih III, visited the United States—the first ever visit of a Khalifa. Numerous U.S. newspapers covered his historic three-week visit, which

included meetings with esteemed public officials, including mayors and foreign ambassadors. He would visit the States again, with trips to San Francisco and Washington D.C., in 1980.

The momentum created from the twin visits of Khalifatul Masih III was perpetuated by subsequent visits to the United States by Hadhrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad(rh), Khalifatul Masih IV, in 1987, 1989, 1994, 1997 and 1998. Khalifatul Masih IV(rh) inaugurated numerous new missions and mosques across the country. He also paid two visits to U.S. Capitol Hill, including a special reception on June 24, 1998 at the Rayburn House Office Building, where he met with eight members of U.S. Congress.

In 2008, to commemorate the centennial anniversary of Khilafat (spiritual successorship) in Ahmadiyyat, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad(aba), Khalifatul Masih V, made his first trip to the United States. In Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the “Khalifa of Islam,” as one prominent American newspaper referred to Khalifatul Masih V, shared the beauties of Ahmadiyyat to over 10,000 followers.

On June 27, 2012, at U.S. Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., the “grandeur

and beauty” of Ahmadiyyat promised by Khalifatul Masih II(ra) reached an unprecedented zenith. From the elegant Gold Room in the Rayburn Building, Khalifatul Masih V(aba) presided over a gathering of 140 special dignitaries in Washington D.C, marking his second visit to the States. Political thinkers and statesmen from all major arenas and strata of influence, foreign and domestic, including 30 members of U.S. Congress, waited for Khalifatul Masih V(aba) to address them. It was a gathering and visit of extraordinary and unprecedented proportions: a “head of state” greeting for Khalifatul Masih V(aba) upon entry to the building; members of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate, from opposite political camps, side by side in the front rows of the room; the Democratic Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives personally leading the U.S. Congressional welcome; representatives from the White House, U.S. State Department and Pentagon on hand; an entire room of senior U.S. lawmakers, officials and thought leaders rising out of respect when Khalifatul Masih V(aba) stood to walk to the podium and listening attentively for the entire duration of his address; a special bi-partisan U.S. Congressional resolution and special floor statement from the

U.S. House of Representatives to recognise Khalifatul Masih V(aba)’s global importance; a special gift of a U.S. flag flown over the U.S. Capitol to honour Khalifatul Masih V; and a special guided tour and personal welcome to Khalifatul Masih V to the august gallery of the U.S. House of Representatives.

But this was not simply a worldly gathering. Khalifatul Masih V(aba)’s singular focus was to deliver an Islamic formula of peace to correct the unjust actions of all nations (an address entitled, “The Path to Peace: Just Relations Between Nations”)—an unambiguous spiritual message to echo through the nation’s loftiest halls. And what an effective and sweeping message it was! In only twenty-five minutes, Khalifatul Masih V(aba) underscored the principles of non-discrimination, absolute justice for all, relations between powerful and weak countries, anti-corruption, the means to secure peace and honest brokering of peace negotiations. He also offered profound insight on the origins, history and challenges facing the United Nations Organization (UNO). He concluded with an eloquent observation about how the United States has a special role in enshrining and implementing the principles he outlined. Khalifatul

Masih V’s address was received by the distinguished audience with uniform praise and acknowledgement. Guests were overheard describing the address as

“profoundly deep,” “thoughtful,” “powerful,” “earnest,” “pure gospel” and “a sorely needed message from a humble Muslim leader.”

“His Holiness comes from a point of great credibility,” said U.S. Congressman (and first Muslim lawmaker) Keith Ellison during an interview with a prominent U.S. news outlet immediately after the address: “Not only because of his spiritual elevation, but also because the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has been persecuted around the world in ruthless ways.” He would later tell Khalifatul Masih V(aba) that he was especially moved by the part of his address in which it was mentioned that the wealth of other nations should not be coveted.

Khalifatul Masih V(aba)’s presence also stirred the hearts of other speakers at the event, who exhibited high moral courage in giving the reception their highest

priority even during an active session of U.S. Congress. “Your Holiness, you have united the House and Senate,” declared U.S. Senator Robert Casey, “We should have you here more often.” “I have to say that there is a particular sense of blessings that seems to rest on this brimming room today,” observed Dr Katrina Lantos Swett, U.S. Chairperson for the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom: “I am sure that this is due in part to the wonderful spirit of goodwill, the warm hearts and a sense of optimism and love of participants, but Your Holiness, it is undoubtedly a reflection of the blessings that you bring to this Capitol.”

Offering a special U.S. flag as a gift to Khalifatul Masih V(aba), U.S. Congressman Brad Sherman commented:

“I know this is [His Holiness’] first time visiting U.S. Congress, and we welcome him. We value his commitment to world peace, brotherhood, justice and religious freedom. I’ve interacted with members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, and I’m struck by their dedication and passion and the respect and admiration they have for their spiritual leader.” Donning a Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya (Ahmadi Muslim youth group) neck scarf as a gesture of solidarity with Khalifatul

Masih V(aba), U.S. Congressman Michael Honda remarked: “In his book, ‘A Message of Peace,’ Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad wrote in 1908: ‘The earth created by God provides a common floor for all people alike, and the sun moon and the stars are source of radiance and provide many benefits for all alike.’ [Your Holiness], this quote resonates with me as someone who served in the U.S. Peace Corps and who has been discriminated against. I hope young people can develop leadership skills so that they can bring message of peace, freedom and harmony led by His Holiness.”

Offering the keynote U.S. Congressional welcome to Khalifatul Masih V(aba), U.S. Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi proclaimed: “It is an honour to be in the same room with you…Though a man of humble beginnings, your leadership has made you a f igure of global prominence. You started as a teacher and now you’re a guide for millions of Muslims worldwide. You worked to help farmers in Ghana and now you are a force across borders and an asset to the developing world. You were persecuted for your beliefs, jailed for your faith, exiled from your homeland but refused to turn to bitterness and vengeance. You’re a leader with wisdom and compassion and a champion of non-violence and respect among faiths.”

Those of us who were blessed to be in the company of Khalifatul Masih V(aba) as event organisers on this historic day felt spiritual electricity running through the corridors of U.S. Capitol Hill. We witnessed our own uncertainties and anxieties associated with Khalifatul Masih V(aba)’s visit instantly disappear. We witnessed renowned U.S. Congressional leaders remain transfixed to Khalifatul Masih V(aba) and his peerless message for several continuous hours. We witnessed foreign diplomats and leading luminaries assemble in line just to catch a glimpse of Khalifatul Masih V(aba). We witnessed droves of American onlookers, young and old, overcome by the allure of Khalifatul Masih V(aba), flash photographs of him as he stood in the center of the U.S. Congressional visitor’s center. In short, we witnessed the culmination of over nine decades of collective efforts from the American Ahmadi Muslim pioneers that Khalifatul Masih II(ra) had so boldly

spoken about. As Khalifatul Masih V(aba) himself would later explain, this reception ultimately reflected a remarkable manifestation of Allah’s revelation to both the Prophet Muhammad(saw) and the Promised Messiah(as), and observed and experienced by other Ahmadi Muslims there in attendance: “You will be helped with prestige.”

Nearly a century of history provides sublime evidence that the “spiritual colonisation” of the United States by Ahmadiyyat endures before our very eyes, and with it comes the perennial fulfillment of Khalifatul Masih II(ra)’s glorious pronouncement. May the grandeur and beauty of Ahmadiyyat never diminish from the United States. Insha’allah. Ameen.

dr. John Alexander dowie—the false prophet of America—died as a result of my prophecy.

Be it clear that the man whose name is mentioned in the title was a bitter enemy of Islam. He was also a false claimant to prophethood, and believed that Muhammad(saw)—the Chief of Prophets, the Most Truthful of the true, the Best of Messengers, the Leader of the Pure, the Chosen One of God—was a liar and impostor. Out of his evil nature, he would use extremely foul and obscene language with regard to the Holy Prophet(saw), and, because of his malice towards Islam, extremely evil traits were found in him. Just as swine see no value in pearls, so did he view the Islamic [concept of ] Divine Unity with contempt and wanted to destroy it. He believed Jesus(as) to be God and had such a passion for spreading the doctrine of Trinity in the world, that though I have read hundreds

of books by Christian clergymen, I have not seen such passion in anyone else…I subscribed to his newspaper Leaves of Healing, and was constantly aware of his foul and abusive language. When his insolence had reached the limit, I sent him a letter in English in which I invited him to a mubahala [prayer-duel] so that God may cause the liar among us to die during the lifetime of the one who is truthful. This invitation was sent to him twice, in 1902 and again in 1903, and was also published in some well-known newspapers in America…It is only by the grace of God that the editors of these American newspapers, despite being Christians and hostile to Islam, published my article about mubahala so widely and with such enthusiasm that it became widely known throughout America and Europe, and the news of it even reverberated back to India. The gist of my mubahala was that Islam is the true faith and the Christian doctrine is

false; and I am the Messiah who is from God, and whose coming in the latter days was promised in the scriptures of the Prophets. I also wrote that Dr. Dowie was false in his claim of Prophethood, as well as in his doctrine of Trinity, and that if he accepted the challenge of mubahala he would die within my lifetime in great pain and misery. Even if he did not accept the challenge, he would still not be able to escape Divine punishment. In response to this, the ill-fated Dowie published the following lines sometime in December 1903, and also in the 26th September, 1903 issue of his newspaper:

“There is a foolish Mohammedan Messiah in India who keeps on writing to me that Jesus Christ lies buried in Kashmir. People ask me why do I not reply to him. Do you think that I should reply to these gnats and flies? If I were to put my foot on them, I would trample them to death.”

In his issue of 19th December, 1902, he wrote:

“My mission is to gather people from the East and West, North and South, and populate this town and other towns with Christians, until the day arrives when the Mohammedan faith is effaced from the earth. O Lord! show us that hour.”

In short, this man became more and more impudent after the publication of my mubahala in Europe, America, here in India, and effectively in the whole world. For my part I only waited, for I was sure that God would decide between us as I had beseeched Him to do, and His decision would distinguish between the liar and the truthful one. I kept praying to God asking for the death of the liar. Hence God Almighty informed me a number of times that I would be victorious and the enemy would be destroyed. Just fifteen days before

Dowie’s death, God Almighty once again informed me of my victory through His revelation…

Thus the sign of Dowie’s death (which has resulted in a great victory) can serve as a luminous sign for the people of Asia, America, Europe and India. The other signs which have appeared as a result of my prophecies have been limited to the Punjab and India, and nobody in America or Europe knew about them. But this sign, which emerged as a prophecy from the Punjab, reached all the way to America, and found fulfilment in a person known by everyone in Europe and America. And no sooner had he died, than the news of his death was conveyed to India through telegrams. The news was published by The Pioneer (published from Allahabad), on 11th March, 1907, and by The Civil and Military Gazette (published from Lahore), on 12th March, 1907, and by The Indian Daily Telegraph (published from Lucknow), on 12th March, 1907. Hence the news was published round the world.

Such was the worldly status of this man that he was honoured like lords and princes…But despite the prestige and fame he enjoyed in America and Europe, it so happened, by the grace of God, that

my mubahala against him was published in the major daily newspapers of America and became well-known all over Europe and America. And, after it became so widely publicized, the prophecy of his death and destruction was fulfilled with such clarity, that it is impossible to conceive anything more obvious and irrefutable. Every aspect of his life was stricken with calamity. He was found to be an embezzler and drinker, although he had prohibited the use of liquor in his teachings. In a state of great despair he was driven out of Zion—the city which he had himself established at a cost of millions of rupees. He was also deprived of seventy million rupees which he possessed in cash. His wife and son turned against him and his father even announced that he was a misbegotten son, and it was established before the people that his birth was illegitimate. As for his claim that he miraculously cured the sick, all such bragging and boasting turned out to be false, and he suffered all sorts of humiliation. He was finally afflicted with paralysis and had to be carried about by men like a wooden plank. Soon afterwards he went mad due to his intense grief and sorrow. His claim that he had a long life ahead of him and that he was getting younger by the day, while others were getting old, turned

the great victory

18 THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS | SEPTEMBER 2012

out to be another lie. Finally, in the first week of March 1907, he died in a state of great distress, pain and sorrow. Can there be a greater miracle? My true mission is to break the Cross, and a great part of the Cross has been broken with his death. Since he was the world’s foremost defender of the Cross, and claimed to be a Messenger, and claimed that all Muslims would be destroyed by his prayers, and Islam would be destroyed, and the Ka’aba would fall into ruins, God Almighty therefore caused him to perish at my hands. I also believe that the prophecy about the ‘slaying of the swine’ has been clearly fulfilled with his death, for who could be more dangerous than the one who makes a false claim of Prophethood and eats the filth of falsehood like a pig? He himself wrote that nearly a hundred thousand wealthy people had joined him.

The fact is that Musailma, the Impostor, and Aswad ‘Ansi were nothing as compared to him. Neither of them enjoyed the popularity he did, nor did they possess millions of rupees like him. So I can swear by God that he was the same ‘swine’ whose death at the hands of the Promised Messiah(as) had been foretold by the Holy Prophet(saw). Had I not invited him to mubahala, or invoked curse on him, or published the prophecy

regarding his ruin, his death would not have served as a testimony to the truth of Islam. But since I had published beforehand in hundreds of newspapers that he would die during my lifetime, and I wrote time and again that I am the Promised Messiah(as) and Dowie is a liar, and that the proof of this would be that he would die in ignominy and despair within my lifetime, that is why he met his death during my life. Can there be a greater miracle that testifies to the truth of the prophecy of the Holy Prophet(saw)? Only he who is the enemy of truth will deny it.

Peace be on him who follows the guidance.

An Eyewitness Account of the Address at Capitol Hill:

A Grand Manifestation of the Prophecy:

“ You Have Been Helped With Prestige”

by anwer mahmood khan los angeles, california usa

Although the United States achieved independence on July 4, 1776, its spiritual birth took place on June 27, 2012,

when for the first time, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad(aba), Khalifatul Masih V(aba), Head of the worldwide Ahmadi-yya Muslim Community, came to the chambers of the United States Con-gress (Capitol Hill) and introduced its members to the unfaltering relation-ship between justice and the establish-ment of world peace in the light of the teachings of the Holy Qur’an, and concluded his session with a collective silent prayer. The event drew some 140

special dignitaries, including 30 mem-bers of United States Congress, am-bassadors, senior government officials and thought leaders. I had the dis-tinct honour to be among those in at-tendance at this event, and this article seeks to capture some of my impres-sions of the various linkages between the event and an important revelation given to both Prophet Muhammad(saw) and the Promised Messiah(as): “You have been helped with prestige.” It is worth beginning with some vital background on the subject revelation. Hadhrat Abu Huraira(ra) states that once the Prophet Muhammad(saw) explained that he had

Translated from the Urdu by Nakasha Ahmad, Ohio, USA

Page 21: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

been given six distinctions over and above all the other prophets. The second distinction among these was:

“You have been helped with prestige”1

“Prestige” in this revelation refers to an aura of support or majesty bestowed by Allah. This second distinction of Proph-et Muhammad(saw) was apparent in many instances throughout his life. The dis-tinction of the Prophet Muhammad(saw) that he would be helped with prestige was also specially granted to his ser-vant and true and ardent devotee, the Promised Messiah(as). The Promised Messiah(as) twice received precisely the same revelation—with some variations in the wording—once in 1883 and once in 1906. In 1883, he received the fol-lowing variation:

“You have been helped with prestige and have been brought to life with truth, O truthful one. You have been helped and your opponents said: ‘No way of escape is left.’”2

In 1906, he received the following vari-ation:

“You have been helped with prestige and they said: ‘There is no way of escape left.’”3

The above revelations have been mani-fested several times during the life of the Promised Messiah(as), be it during his public debates, court appearance or writing experiences—as well as during the lives of the Promised Messiah(as)’s Successors in Ahmadiyyat (the Khali-fas). Indeed, many Ahmadi Muslims have witnessed and written about these manifestations. But a truly unique and unprecedented manifestation of the prophecy took place on June 27, 2012, when Khalifatul Masih V(aba), Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Commu-nity, visited Capitol Hill, headquarters

of the United States Congress, and for the first time, met with United States lawmakers to present to them Qur’anic teachings on justice and the establish-ment of world peace. I narrate some examples that demonstrate how Allah, with His Majesty, bestowed prestige on His Holiness, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad(aba), the 5th Successor the Prom-ised Messiah(as) (Khalifatul Masih V(aba)).When Khalifatul Masih V(aba), accompa-nied by some 40 members of the Com-munity, first arrived at the Rayburn Building, and having passed through security, entered the corridor, we wit-nessed the first manifestation of Allah’s help, when visitors and staffers, busy with their own affairs and there for their own reasons, caught sight of Khalifatul Masih V(aba) lined up on either side of him as if they had been waiting espe-cially to welcome him. Every camera was turned towards him and captured his magnetic personality, though none of the passersby knew who he was or why he had come. Another glimpse of Allah’s help became manifest when Khalifatul Masih V(aba) first entered the Rayburn Gold Room—a prestigious venue in the United States House of Representative building—where ap-proximately 140 special dignitaries, in-cluding 30 members of U.S. Congress, ambassadors, senior government offi-cials and thought leaders, stood up and

welcomed Khalifatul Masih V(aba) with a resounding applause.

United States Congressman Brad Sher-man, one of the members of the United States Congress who had received and met Khalifatul Masih V(aba) before the event, took the podium and presented Khalifatul Masih V(aba) with a special United States flag that once had flown over the United States Capitol build-ing. He presented the historic relic to Khalifatul Masih V(aba), along with a certificate of its authenticity. United States Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, another member of United States Con-gress in attendance, took the podium and presented Khalifatul Masih V(aba) with a rare special bi-partisan United States Congressional resolution, in-troduced on that very day and signed by 22 members of the United States Congress, recognising Khalifatul Ma-sih V(aba) for his leadership, courage and various contributions in advancing hu-man rights and welfare for all people throughout the world. In a spontaneous moment to begin her prepared remarks about the worldwide persecution of Ahmadi Muslims, Dr. Katrina Lantos Swett, Chairperson of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom—a vital non-partisan govern-ment commission—observed:

an eyewitness account of the address at capitol hill

22 THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS | SEPTEMBER 2012

Page 23: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

“I have to say that there is a particular sense of blessing that seems to rest on this brimming room today, and I am sure that it is due in part to the wonderful spirit of goodwill, the warm hearts and a sense of optimism and love of the participants, but Your Holiness, it is undoubtedly a reflection of the blessing that you bring to the capital, and so we are so honoured and so grateful for you being here today.”

United States Democratic Leader Nan-cy Pelosi, the keynote speaker from the United States Congress, commended Khalifatul Masih V(aba) thus:

“It is an honour to be in the same room with you…Though a man of humble beginnings, your leadership has made you a figure of global prominence. You started as a teach-er and now you’re a guide for millions of Muslims worldwide. You worked to help farmers in Ghana and now you are a force across borders and an asset to the develop-ing world. You were persecuted for your beliefs, jailed for your faith, exiled from your homeland but refused to turn to bit-terness and vengeance. You’re a leader with wisdom and compassion and a champion of non-violence and respect among faiths.”

After the various remarks by several oth-er members of United States Congress, when Khalifatul Masih V(aba) stood up to deliver his address, the entire audi-

ence stood on their feet out of respect—yet another manifestation of the special prestige given to him on this special day. During his address, Khalifatul Masih V(aba) stressed the importance of justice in establishing world peace and present-ed Islam’s teachings and insight from the Holy Qur’an, outlining the steps that the Holy Qur’an has clearly ex-plained for the path to peace. Members of the audience listened carefully and attentively, and many took notes during the address. United States Democratic Leader Pelosi stepped off the stage and took a seat in the front row of the au-dience to have a better listen and view of Khalifatul Masih V(aba). Of signifi-cant note, most of the 30 members of United States Congress stayed for the entire duration of the event and Khali-fatul Masih V(aba)’s address, despite the fact that United States Congress was in session during the very hour of the event. Many seasoned public officials in the audience would later comment that in all their years attending events in Washington D.C., they had never seen more than 10 members of United States Congress ever come to such an event, let alone stay for its entire duration. Yet again, this was but another example of the prestige given to Khalifatul Masih V(aba).

After Khalifatul Masih V(aba) conclud-

SEPTEMBER 2012 | THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS 23

Page 24: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

ed his address, he led the entire audi-ence in a special collective silent prayer. Then the audience stood up for a third time, bursting with applause. These are the very same lawmakers who rarely, if ever, give standing ovations to even the President of the United States. Clearly, Allah’s decree had possessed their hearts as well. Indeed, there appeared to be an electric current running through the room—undoubtedly spurred by a heav-enly prestige that was consistently and inevitably manifesting itself throughout the morning. I later described the scene through a line of poetry that I penned after the event: “How can I express the details of this awe-inspiring scene? / My pen is incapable and my sentiments are overwhelmed with splendor.”

After the formal session, Khalifatul Ma-sih V(aba) received a guided tour of the United States Capitol, ending with a visit to the gallery of the United States House of Representatives, where a live Congressional session was in progress. While Khalifatul Masih V(aba) sat in the gallery, United States Congressman Sherman took to the main floor of the United States House of Representatives and formally introduced Khalifatul Ma-sih V(aba) to the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, draw-ing attention to his presence in the gal-lery and officially noting his welcome

and the special U.S. Congressional reso-lution for the official recorded proceed-ings of United States Congress.

After Khalifatul Masih V(aba)’s address, I was descending the staircase when one of the special dignitaries in attendance told me that he found Khalifatul Masih V(aba)’s address to be “pure gospel.” When I heard these words, I immediately re-flected on the historic event of 1896, when the Promised Messiah(as)’s seminal essay, The Philosophy of the Teachings of Islam, was read at the Conference of World Religions. After that event, an American publication, Spiritual Journal (Boston), had characterized the lecture as “pure gospel” in its review. When I began to reflect upon this similarity further, I realised that both Khalifatul Masih V(aba)’s address and the Promised Messiah(as)’s essay shared one common feature: they stressed Islam’s true teach-ings without ever mentioning or criti-cising any other faith tradition. Here then was yet another striking example of heavenly prestige.

Another special dignitary commented to me: “Congress desperately needed this lecture [by Khalifatul Masih].” Another United States Congressman in atten-dance, Andre Carson, who is the sec-ond Muslim to hold Congressional of-fice, was overheard saying: “I have never

an eyewitness account of the address at capitol hill

24 THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS | SEPTEMBER 2012

Page 25: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

seen another Muslim leader who is both so humble and yet so masterful in speech.” The deluge of excitement and goodwill in the room on this blessed day was cer-tainly a fulfilment of Khalifatul Masih II’s prayer:

“At every step, a large host of angels may accompany you / In every country, may Allah protect and safeguard you.”

Those special dignitaries present in the room who possessed judgement and discernment felt their hearts affected by the occasion and by the extraordinary reverence engendered by Khalifatul Masih V(aba)’s blessed presence, which compelled them to express their wel-come and their praise of him in every possible manner. In fact, at this time, we witnessed and observed two living signs from Allah:

“O Masroor, I am with you”

And:

“You have been helped with prestige”

Independent of my impressions of the event and the link to the prophecy “You have been helped with prestige”, Khali-fatul Masih V(aba) himself commented to me a few days after the event that when he was busy preparing to go to United

States Capitol Hill, Allah drew his at-tention to this revelation on that very morning, and he prayed that Allah ful-fill the revelation in his favour. Indeed, Allah fulfilled Khalifatul Masih V(aba)’s prayer in a most grand and profound manner. Through the power of Muslim Television Ahmadiyya (MTA – www.mta.tv), now the entire world—and not just those present in the Rayburn Gold Room on June 27, 2012—witnessed this transformative event and were able to testify to the truth of the revelation: “You have been helped with prestige”. Al-humdholillah suma alhumdholillah. All praise belongs to Allah alone.

On 27th June 2012, a historic event took place at Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Hadhrat Mirza Masroor

Ahmad(aba), Khalifatul Masih V, Fifth Successor to the Promised Messiah(as) and Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, addressed leading congressmen, senators, ambassadors, White House and State Department Staff, NGO leaders, religious leaders, professors, policy advisors, bureaucrats, members of the Diplomatic Corps, representatives of think-tanks and the Pentagon and journalists from the media. The meeting, the first of its kind, gave the opportunity to some of the most

influential leaders in the United States, including Honourable Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic Leader in the House of Representatives, to hear first-hand Islam’s message on world peace. Following the event, His Holiness was given a tour of the Capitol Hill building, before being escorted to the House of Representatives where a Resolution was introduced in honour of his visit to the United States. The introductory paragraph of the Resolution stated:

“Welcoming His Holiness, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the worldwide spiritual and administrative head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, to Washington, DC, and

recognizing his commitment to world peace, justice, nonviolence, human rights, religious freedom and democracy.”

Senator Robert Casey (US-PA) welcomed His Holiness to the United States and said that he was greatly appreciative at having the opportunity to meet with him. He said: “Your Holiness, I want to thank you for your great leadership and your commitment to peace, tolerance and justice.”

The first Muslim Congressman, Keith Ellison (US MN-5) said that the United States was “honoured by the presence of His Holiness” and he said that under the leadership of its

Khalifa, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at was proving to be a “true blessing for the people of the United States.”

Congressman Brad Sherman (US CA-27) said that he would be introducing the Congressional Resolution welcoming His Holiness to the United States in the House of Representatives immediately after the event. He also said that His Holiness was “a model of tolerance for the entire world.”

Katrina Lantos Swett, Chairwoman of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) said that she felt the entire room was filled with a “special

blessing and undoubtedly it is a reflection of the blessing His Holiness brings to the Capitol.” She went on to speak about and condemn the continued persecution of Ahmadi Muslims in various countries.

Congressman Frank Wolf (VA-10) welcomed Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad(aba) to the United States and said that the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at was ever ready to support all human rights efforts.

Congressman Mike Honda (CA-15) spoke about his pleasure at meeting His Holiness privately the evening before at the Baitur Rahman Mosque. He said that he hoped that Ahmadis remained forever safe in the

United States so that they could continue to propagate their message of peace.

Thereafter, Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) presented a copy of the Special Congressional Resolution to His Holiness.

Democratic Leader, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi said she was proud that such a bipartisan welcome had been given to Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad(aba). She said the leadership of Hadhrat Mirza Masroor

listen to what I have to say. I have been requested to speak about a subject that is extremely vast and wide ranging. It has many different aspects and therefore, it is not possible for me to cover all of them in the short time available. The subject that I have been asked to speak about is the establishment of world peace. Certainly, this is the most vital and pressing issue facing the world today. However, as the time is limited, I will only briefly give the Islamic viewpoint on the establishment of peace through just and equal relations between nations.

The truth is that peace and justice are inseparable – you cannot have one without the other. Certainly, this principle is something that all wise and intelligent people understand. Leaving

aside those people who are determined to create disorder in the world, no one can ever claim that in any society, country or even the entire world, that there can be disorder or a lack of peace where justice and fair dealing exist. Nevertheless, we find in many parts of the world that disorder and a lack of peace are prevalent. Such disorder is visible both internally within countries, and externally in terms of the relations between various nations. Such disorder and strife exists even though all governments claim to make policies that are based on justice. All claim that the establishment of peace is their primary objective. Yet, in general, there is little doubt that restlessness and anxiety is increasing in the world, and so disorder is spreading. This clearly proves that somewhere along the line, the requirements of justice are not being fulfilled. Therefore, there is an urgent need to try and end inequality, wherever and whenever it exists. Thus, as the worldwide Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, I would like to make a few observations about the need for, and the ways to achieve peace based on justice.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is purely a religious community. It is our firm belief that the Messiah and

SEPTEMBER 2012 | THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS 35

Page 36: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

Reformer who was destined to appear in this age and enlighten the world as to Islam’s true teachings has indeed arrived. We believe that the Founder of our Community, Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian(as), was that very Promised Messiah and Reformer, and thus we have accepted him. He pressed upon his followers to act and propagate the real and true teachings of Islam that are based on the Holy Qur’an. Therefore, everything that I will say in relation to establishing peace, and in relation to conducting just international relations, will be based on Qur’anic teachings.

In relation to achieving world peace, all of you regularly express your opinions, and indeed make great efforts. Your creative and intelligent minds allow you

to present great ideas, plans and indeed a vision of peace. Thus, this issue does not require me to speak from a worldly or political perspective, but instead my entire focus will be based on how to establish peace based on religion. For this purpose I shall, as I have earlier said, present some very important guidelines based on the teachings of the Holy Qur’an.

It is important to always remember that human knowledge and intellect is not perfect, but is in fact limited. Thus, when making decisions or forming thoughts often certain factors enter human minds, which can cloud judgement and lead to a person trying to fulfil his own rights. Ultimately, this can lead to an unjust outcome and decision being made. God’s

36 THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS | SEPTEMBER 2012

Page 37: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

Law, however, is perfect and so no vested interests or unfair provisions exist. This is because God only desires for the good and betterment of His Creation and therefore, His Law is based entirely on justice. The day the people of the world come to recognise and understand this crucial point will be the day that the foundation for true and everlasting peace will be laid. Otherwise, we continue to find that although efforts are endlessly made to establish world peace, yet they are unable to provide any worthwhile results.

After the conclusion of the First World War, the leaders of certain countries desired for good and peaceful relations between all nations in future. Thus, in an effort to achieve world peace the League of Nations was formed. Its principal aim was to maintain world peace and to prevent future wars from breaking out. Unfortunately, the rules of the League

and the resolutions it passed had certain flaws and weaknesses and so they did not properly protect the rights of all peoples and all nations equally. Consequently, as a result of the inequalities that existed, long-term peace could not prevail. The efforts of the League failed and this led directly to World War II.

We are all aware of the unparalleled destruction and devastation that ensued, where around 75 million people globally lost their lives, many of who were innocent civilians. That war should have been more than enough to open the eyes of the world. It should have been a means to developing wise policies that granted all parties their due rights, based on justice, and thus prove to be a means of establishing peace in the world. The world’s governments at the time did endeavour to some extent to try and establish peace, and hence the United Nations was established. However, it soon

SEPTEMBER 2012 | THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS 37

Page 38: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

became quite apparent that the noble and overarching objective underpinning the United Nations could not be fulfilled. Indeed, today certain governments quite openly make statements that prove its failure.

What does Islam say in relation to international relations that are based on justice, and so a means of establishing peace? In the Holy Qur’an, God Almighty has made it clear that whilst our nationalities or ethnic backgrounds act as a means of identity, they do not entitle or validate any form of superiority of any kind.1

The Qur’an, thus, makes clear that all people are born equal. Furthermore, in the final sermon ever delivered by the Holy

Prophet Muhammad(saw), he instructed all Muslims to always remember that an Arab is not superior to a non-Arab and nor is a non-Arab superior to an Arab. He taught that a white person is not superior to a black person and nor is a black person superior to a white person. Thus, it is a clear teaching of Islam that the people of all nationalities and all races are equal. It is also made clear that all people should be granted equal rights without any discrimination or prejudice. This is the key and golden principle that lays the foundation for harmony between different groups and nations, and for the establishment of peace.

However, today we find that there is division and separation between powerful

38 THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS | SEPTEMBER 2012

Page 39: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

and weaker nations. For example, in the United Nations we find that there is a distinction made between certain countries. Thus, in the Security Council there are some permanent members and some non-permanent members. This division has proved to be an internal source of anxiety and frustration and thus we regularly hear reports of certain countries protesting against this inequality. Islam teaches absolute justice and equality in all matters and so we find another very crucial guideline in Chapter 5, Verse 3 of the Holy Qur’an. In this verse it states that to fully comply with the requirements of justice, it is necessary to treat even those people, who go beyond all limits in their hatred and enmity, with fairness and equity. The Qur’an teaches that wherever and whoever counsels you towards goodness and virtue, you should accept it, and wherever and whoever

counsels you towards sinful or unjust behaviour, you should reject it.

A question that naturally arises is that what is the standard of justice required by Islam? In Chapter 4, Verse 136, the Holy Qur’an states that even if you have to testify against yourself, or your parents or your most loved ones, then you must do so in order to uphold justice and to uphold the truth. Powerful and rich countries should not usurp the rights of the poor and weaker countries in an effort to preserve their own rights, and nor should they deal with the poorer nations in an unjust fashion. On the other hand, the poor and weaker nations should not seek to inflict harm on the powerful or wealthy nations whenever the opportunity arises. Instead, both sides should endeavour to fully abide by the principles of justice. Indeed, this

SEPTEMBER 2012 | THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS 39

Page 40: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

is a matter of crucial importance in maintaining peaceful relations between countries.

Another requirement for peace between nations based on justice is given in Chapter 15, Verse 89 of the Holy Qur’an where it states that no party should ever look enviously at the resources and wealth of others. Similarly, no country should seek to unjustly appropriate or take over the resources of another country on the false pretext of trying to assist or support them. Thus, on the basis of providing technical expertise, governments should not take advantage of other nations by making unjust trade deals or contracts. Similarly, on the basis of providing expertise or assistance, governments should not try to take control of the natural resources or assets of the developing nations. Where less educated people or governments need to be taught how to properly utilise their natural resources, then this should be done.

Then, nations and governments should always seek to serve and help those less fortunate. However, such service should not be rendered with an aim of achieving national or political benefits or as a means to fulfil vested interests. We find that in

the past six or seven decades the United Nations has launched many programmes or foundations aiming to help the poor countries to progress. Towards this effort they have explored the natural resources of the developing nations. However, despite these efforts, none of the poorer countries have reached the stage or level of the developed nations. One reason for this is certainly wide-ranging corruption by many of the governments of those under-developed countries. With regret though I must say that despite this, as a means to further their own interests, the developed nations have continued to deal with such governments. Trade deals, international aid and business contracts have continued to be processed. As a result, the frustrations and restlessness of the poor and deprived segments of society have continued to increase and this has led to rebellion and internal disorder within those countries. The poor people of the developing countries have become so frustrated that they have turned against not only their own leaders, but also the big powers as well. This has played into the hands of the extremist groups, who have taken advantage of the frustrations, and so have been able to encourage such people towards joining their groups and supporting their hate-filled ideology. The ultimate result of this

the path to peace – just relations between nations

40 THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS | SEPTEMBER 2012

Page 41: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

has been that the peace of the world has been destroyed.

Thus, Islam has drawn our attention to various means for peace. It requires absolute justice. It requires truthful testimony to always be given. It requires that our glances are not cast enviously in the direction of the wealth of others. It requires that the developed nations put aside their vested interests, and instead help and serve the less developed and poorer nations with a truly selfless attitude and spirit. If all of these factors are observed, then true peace will be established.

If despite all these aforementioned measures any country transgresses all limits and attacks another country, and seeks to unjustly take control of its resources, then other countries should certainly take measures to stop such cruelty – but they should always act with justice when doing so.

The circumstances for taking action, based on Islamic teachings are detailed in the Qur’an, in Chapter 49.2 It teaches that when two nations are in dispute and this leads to war, then other governments should strongly counsel them towards dialogue and diplomacy so that they can

come to an agreement and reconciliation on the basis of a negotiated settlement. If, however, one of the parties does not accept the terms of agreement and wages war, then other countries should unite together and fight to stop that aggressor. When the aggressive nation is defeated and agrees to mutual negotiation, then all parties should work towards an agreement that leads to long-standing peace and reconciliation. Harsh and unjust conditions should not be enforced that leads to the hands of any nation being tied, because in the long-term that will lead to restlessness, which will ferment and spread. The result of such restlessness will be further disorder.

In circumstances where a third-party government seeks to bring about reconciliation between two parties, then it should act with sincerity and total impartiality. This impartiality should remain even if one of the parties speaks against it. Therefore, the third-party should display no anger in such circumstances, it should seek no revenge, nor should it act in an unfair manner. All parties should be afforded their due rights.

Thus, for the requirements of justice to be fulfilled, it is essential that the countries

SEPTEMBER 2012 | THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS 41

Page 42: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

that are negotiating a settlement should themselves not seek to fulfil their own personal interests, nor try to derive benefit unduly from either country. They should not interfere unjustly or pressure either of the parties unfairly. The natural resources of any country should not be taken advantage of. Unnecessary and unfair restrictions should not be placed upon such countries, because this is neither just and nor can it ever prove to be a source of improving relations between countries.

Due to time constraints, I have only very briefly mentioned these points. In short, if we desire for peace to be established in the world, then we must leave aside

our personal and national interests for the greater good and instead we must establish mutual relations that are based entirely on justice. Otherwise, some of you might agree with me that due to alliances, blocs may be formed in future – or I can even say they have started forming – and it is not unlikely that disorder will continue to increase in the world, which will ultimately lead to a huge destruction. The effects of such devastation and warfare will surely last for many generations. Therefore, the United States, as the world’s largest power, should play its role in acting with true justice and with such good intentions, as I have described. If it does so then the world will always remember

Page 49: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

Whilst contemplating which facet of Islam I should address, I received a request from the National President of our Community here in Germany, Abdullah Wagishauser Sahib, in which he asked me to speak about Islam’s teach-ings in relation to love and loyalty to one’s nation. This helped me make my decision. Thus, I shall now speak to you briefly about certain aspects of Islam’s teachings in this regard.

It is very easy to simply speak of, or hear the words, ‘loyalty and love for one’s nation.’ However, in reality these few words encompass meanings that are wide-rang-ing, beautiful and of tremendous depth. Indeed, to fully comprehend and under-stand what these words truly mean and what they require is actually very difficult. In any case, in the short time available,

I will try to explain Islam’s concept of loyalty and love for one’s nation.

First and foremost, a fundamental prin-ciple of Islam is that a person’s words and deeds should never manifest any form of double standards or hypocrisy. True loyalty requires a relationship built on sincerity and integrity. It requires what a person displays on the surface to be the same as what lies beneath. In terms of nationality, these principles are of the utmost importance. Therefore, it is essential for a citizen of any country to establish a relationship of genuine loy-alty and faithfulness to his nation. It does not matter whether he is a born citizen, or whether he gains citizenship later in life, either through immigration or by any other means.

SEPTEMBER 2012 | THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS 49

Page 50: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

Loyalty is a great quality, and the peo-ple who have displayed this attribute to the highest degree and best standards, are the Prophets of God. Their love and bond with God was so strong that in all matters they kept in view His com-mands and strived to fully implement them, no matter what. This illustrated their commitment to Him and their perfect standards of loyalty. Hence, it is their standards of loyalty that we should use as an example and model. However, before proceeding any further, it is neces-sary to understand what is actually meant by ‘loyalty’.

According to the teachings of Islam, the definition and true meaning of ‘loyalty’ is the unequivocal fulfilment of one’s pledges and covenants at every level

and under all circumstances, regardless of difficulty. This is the true standard of faithfulness required by Islam. At vari-ous places in the Holy Qur’an, Allah has instructed Muslims that they must fulfil their pledges and covenants, because they will be held to account by Him over all undertakings that they have made. The Muslims have been instructed to ful-fil all covenants, including those made with God Almighty, and also all other pledges they have made, according to their respective degrees of importance.

In this context, a question that could arise in the minds of people is that because Muslims claim that God and His religion are of paramount importance to them, thus it follows that their pledge of loy-alty to God will be their first priority,

address at the military headquarters in koblenz, germany

50 THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS | SEPTEMBER 2012

Page 51: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

and that their covenant to God will be what they value above all else and which they endeavour to fulfil. Therefore, the belief may arise that a Muslim’s loyalty to his nation and his pledge to uphold the laws of the land will only be of secondary importance to him. Thus, he may be will-ing to sacrifice his pledge to his country on certain occasions.

To answer this question, I would firstly like to inform you that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) himself taught that the ‘love for one’s nation is a part of faith.’ Thus, sincere patriotism is a requirement in Islam. To truly love God and Islam requires a person to love his nation. It is quite clear, therefore, that there can be no conflict of interest between a person’s love for God, and love

for his country. As love for one’s coun-try has been made a part of Islam, it is quite clear that a Muslim must strive to reach the highest standards of loyalty to his chosen country, because that is a means of reaching God and becom-ing close to Him. Hence, it is impossible that the love a true Muslim holds for God could ever prove to be an impedi-ment or barrier preventing him from displaying true love and faithfulness towards his country. Unfortunately, we find that in certain countries, religious rights are curtailed or even completely denied. Therefore, another question that can arise is whether those people who are persecuted by their state can still maintain a relationship of love and loy-alty to their nation and country. With great sadness, I should inform you that these circumstances exist in Pakistan, where the Government has actually leg-islated against our Community. These anti-Ahmadiyya laws are practically enforced. Thus in Pakistan, all Ahmadi Muslims have been officially declared by law to be ‘non-Muslims’. They are, there-fore, forbidden from calling themselves ‘Muslim’. The Ahmadis in Pakistan are also prohibited from worshipping in the way Muslims do, or acting in accordance with any Islamic practice or custom that could identify them as a Muslim. Thus,

SEPTEMBER 2012 | THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS 51

Page 52: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

the state itself in Pakistan has deprived members of our Community from their basic human right to worship.

Bearing in mind this state of affairs, it is quite natural to wonder how, in such circumstances, can Ahmadi Muslims fol-low the laws of the land? How can they continue to display loyalty to the nation? Here I should clarify that where such extreme circumstances exist, then the law, and loyalty to the nation, become two separate issues. We, Ahmadi Muslims, believe that religion is a personal mat-ter for every individual to determine for himself and that there should be no com-pulsion in matters of faith. Thus, where the law comes to interfere with this right, undoubtedly, it is an act of great cruelty and persecution. Indeed, such state-sanctioned persecution, which has

occurred throughout the ages, has been condemned by the vast majority. If we glance at the history of Europe, we find that people in this Continent have also been the victims of religious persecu-tion, and as a result, many thousands of people had to migrate from one country to the next. All fair-minded historians, governments and people have deemed this to be persecution, and extremely cruel. In such circumstances, Islam advo-cates that where persecution goes beyond all limits and becomes unbearable, then at that time, a person should leave the town or country and migrate to a place where he is free to practise his religion in peace. However, alongside this guidance, Islam also teaches that under no circum-stances should any individual take the law into his own hands and nor should he partake in any schemes or conspiracies

address at the military headquarters in koblenz, germany

52 THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS | SEPTEMBER 2012

Page 53: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

against his country. This is an absolutely clear and unequivocal command given by Islam.

Despite the grave persecution they face, millions of Ahmadis continue to live in Pakistan. Despite being subjected to such sustained discrimination and cruelty in all aspects of their lives, they continue to keep a relationship of total loyalty and a true allegiance to the country. Whichever field they work in or wherever they are based, they are constantly engaged in try-ing to help the nation to progress and succeed. For decades, the opponents of Ahmadiyyat have tried to allege that Ahmadis are not loyal to Pakistan, but they have never been able to prove this or show any evidence to support their claims; instead, the truth is that whenever there has been a need to make any sacri-fice for the sake of Pakistan, for the sake of their country, Ahmadi Muslims have always stood at the forefront and been constantly ready to make every sacrifice for the sake of the country.

Despite themselves being a victim and target of the law, it is Ahmadi Muslims who follow and abide by the laws of the land better than anyone else. This is because they are true Muslims, who fol-low true Islam. Another teaching given

by the Holy Qur’an in relation to loyalty is that people should keep away from all things that are immodest, undesirable and that form any type of rebellion. A beau-tiful and distinguishing feature of Islam is that it does not just draw our atten-tion to the final point of culmination, where the consequences are extremely dangerous; instead, it warns us about all of the smaller issues as well, which act as stepping stones leading mankind to a path paved with danger. Thus, if Islam’s guidance is followed properly, then any issue can be resolved at the earliest point, before the situation gets out of hand.

For instance, an issue which can gravely harm a country is financial greed by indi-viduals. Often, people get consumed by material desires that spiral beyond con-trol, and such desires ultimately lead people to act in a disloyal fashion. Thus, such things can ultimately be a cause of treachery against one’s country. Let me explain a bit. In Arabic the word baghiya has been used to describe those people or those acts of people that cause harm to their countries. It refers to those who take part in wrong practices or who inflict harm on others. It also includes those people who commit fraud and so try to acquire things in an illegal or unjust manner. It refers to those people

SEPTEMBER 2012 | THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS 53

Page 54: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

who transgress all limits and so cause harm and damage. Islam teaches that people who act in these ways cannot be expected to act in a loyal manner, because loyalty is intertwined with high moral values. Loyalty cannot exist without high moral values and high moral val-ues cannot exist without loyalty. Whilst it is true that different people may have different views about high moral stan-dards, yet the religion of Islam revolves solely around seeking God’s pleasure. Thus, Muslims are instructed to always act in a manner that is pleasing to Him. In short, according to Islamic teachings, God Almighty has forbidden all forms of treachery or rebellion, whether against one’s country or one’s government. This is because rebellion or acting against the state is a threat to the peace and secu-rity of a nation. Indeed, where internal rebellion or opposition occurs, then it fans the flames of external opposition and encourages outsiders to take advantage of the internal disorder. Hence, the conse-quences of disloyalty to your nation can be far-reaching and extreme. Thus, any-thing that can cause harm to a nation is included in the term baghiya that I have described. Keeping all of this in mind, loyalty to one’s nation requires a person to display patience, to show morality and to follow the laws of the land.

Generally speaking, in the modern era, most governments are run democratically. Therefore if a person or group wishes to change the government, then they should do so by following the proper democratic process. They should make themselves heard by voting at the ballot box. Votes should not be cast on the basis of per-sonal preferences or personal interests, but in fact, Islam teaches that a person’s vote should be exercised with a sense of loyalty and love for his country. A person’s vote should be cast with the betterment of the nation in mind. Therefore, a per-son should not look at his own priorities and from which candidate or party he can personally benefit; instead, a person should make his decision in a balanced way whereby he assesses which candi-date or party will help the entire nation progress. The keys to government are a huge trust and thus they should only be handed over to the party who the voter honestly believes is best suited and most deserving.

This is the true Islam, and this is true loyalty.

Indeed, in Chapter 4, Verse 59 of the Holy Qur’an, Allah has commanded that a person should only hand over trusts to those who are entitled, and that when

address at the military headquarters in koblenz, germany

54 THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS | SEPTEMBER 2012

Page 55: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

judging between people, he should make his decision with justice and honesty. Thus, loyalty to one’s nation requires that the power of the government should be given to those who are truly entitled to it, so that the nation can progress and come to stand at the forefront amongst the nations of the world.

In many parts of the world we find that members of the public take part in strikes and protests against government policies. Furthermore, in certain Third World countries, the protesters vandal-ise or damage possessions and properties belonging either to the state or to pri-vate citizens. Though they may claim to be acting out of love, the truth is that such acts have nothing to do with loy-alty or love for the nation. It should be remembered that even where protests or strikes are conducted peacefully, without recourse to criminal damage or violence, it still can have a very negative effect. This is because even peaceful protests often result in a loss of millions to the economy of the nation. Under no circumstances can such behaviour be considered to be an example of loyalty to the nation. A golden principle taught by the Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at was that under all circumstances, we must always remain obedient to Allah, to

the Prophets and to the rulers of our nation. This is the same teaching given in the Holy Qur’an. Hence, even where a country permits strikes or protests to take place, they should only be conducted to the extent where they do not harm or cause damage to the nation or to the economy.

Another question that often arises is whether Muslims can join the military forces of the Western countries, and if they are permitted to join, can they then partake in military attacks on Muslim countries? One underlying principle of Islam is that no person should assist in acts of cruelty. This key command must always remain at the forefront of any Muslim’s mind. Where a Muslim country is attacked, because it has itself acted in a cruel and unjust manner and took the first step of aggression, then in such circum-stances the Qur’an has instructed Muslim governments that they should stop the hand of the oppressor. This means they should stop the cruelty and endeavour to establish peace. Thus, in such circum-stances to take action as a means to end cruelty is permissible. However, when the nation which transgresses reforms itself and adopts peace, then that coun-try and its people should not be taken advantage of or be subjugated on the

basis of false pretences or excuses. They should instead be granted normal state freedom and independence once again. The military ambition should thus be to

establish peace, rather than to fulfil any vested interests.

In the same way, Islam permits all coun-tries, whether Muslim or non-Muslim, the right to stop cruelty and oppression. Thus, if necessary, non-Muslim countries can attack Muslim countries to achieve these genuine aims. Muslims in those non-Muslim countries are allowed to join the armies of those non-Muslim coun-tries and prevent the other country from cruelty. Where such circumstances truly exist then Muslim soldiers, whichever Western army they may be part of, must follow orders and fight if required in order to establish peace. If, however, a military makes a decision to attack another nation

unjustly, and thus becomes the oppressor, then a Muslim has the option to leave the army, because then he would be assisting cruelty. By taking this decision it would not mean that he is being disloyal to his country. In fact, in such circumstances, loyalty to his country would demand that he should take such a step and counsel his own government that they should not allow themselves to fall to the same depths as those unjust governments and nations that act in a cruel way. If however, joining the army is compulsory and there is no way to leave, but his conscience is not clear, then the Muslim should leave the country, but cannot raise a voice against the law of the land. He should leave because a Muslim is not permitted to live in a country as a citizen, whilst at the same time, acting against the nation or siding with the opposition.

Thus these are just a few aspects of Islamic teachings, which guide all true Muslims towards the real requirements of loyalty and love for one’s country. In the time available I have only been able to briefly touch upon this topic.

Thus in conclusion, I would like to say that today we observe that the world has become a global village. Mankind has become very closely knit together.

The people of all nations, religions and cultures are found in all countries. This requires that the leaders of every nation should consider and respect the feelings and sentiments of all people. The leaders and their governments should strive to create laws that foster an environment and spirit of truth and justice, rather than making laws that are a means of caus-ing distress and frustration to the people. Injustices and cruelties should be elimi-nated and instead we should strive for true justice. The best way to do this is that the world should come to recog-nise its Creator. Every form of loyalty should be linked to loyalty with God. If this occurs then we will come to witness with our own eyes that the very highest standards of loyalty will be established by the people of all countries and new avenues leading us to peace and security will open throughout the world.

Before ending, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you once again for inviting me today and for listening to what I have said. May God bless you all; and may God bless Germany. Thank you very much.”

On 17 March 2012, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad(aba), the Fifth Khalifa of the Promised Messiah(as) and

Head of the worldwide Ahmadiyya Mus l im Jama’a t (Communit y ) , inaugurated the Baitul Atta Mosque in Wolverhampton, a major city in the West Midlands, United Kingdom. A function was held in the evening to mark the occasion, which was attended by some Members of Parliament, Councillors, dignitaries and guests from all walks of life including local residents.

Councillor Bert Turner, Mayor of Wolverhampton, welcomed Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad(aba) to the city and said he had been particularly struck

by the fact that the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community had opened the doors of its mosques to people from all backgrounds.

Pat McFadden, MP for Wolverhampton South East, said that he was not only the local Member of Parliament, but also a neighbour to the new Mosque as he lived very near to it. He also said that the Ahmadiyya Community’s motto of ‘Love for All, Hatred for None’ was a “lesson” for people.

Paul Uppal, MP for Wolverhampton South West, said that all people should focus on the many common beliefs and practices they shared, rather than the few differences that set them apart. Also taking to the stage were Reverend

John Bernard, who read a message from the Bishop of Wolverhampton and Councillor Elias Mattu; both of whom congratulated the Ahmadiyya Community on the opening of the Mosque. The keynote address was delivered by Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad(aba), Khalifatul Masih V, the transcript of which is presented here:

After reciting Tashhahud, Ta’awwudh and Bismillah, Hadhrat Khalifatul Masih V(aba) said:

“All the distinguished guests: Assalamo Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahe Wa Barakatohu – peace and blessings of Allah be upon you all.

Today is a day of great joy and happiness for the Ahmadi Muslims who live in this area, because a longstanding and ardent desire of theirs has been fulfilled by the opening of this beautiful mosque. However, before I proceed, it would be very unjust of me if I did not take

this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you – all of our esteemed guests – for taking time from your busy schedules to enlighten this event with your attendance. This kind gesture demonstrates your high moral values and such principles particularly shine forth in light of the fact that this is not a worldly event where people have joined together for mere recreation or enjoyment. In fact, today’s function is a purely religious event in which the Ahmadiyya Community is inaugurating a place of worship, which according to Islamic terminology, is called a ‘mosque.’ Moreover, the vast majority, if not all of our guests, are either non-Muslims or are not part of the Ahmadiyya sect of Islam.

Bearing all of this in mind why should not I clearly and openly speak about

these qualities you have displayed? Whilst appreciating your high moral values, I should also hereby express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you. Indeed, by virtue of being grateful to all of you, I am also expressing my gratitude to God Almighty in an effort to seek and attain His pleasure. Certainly, seeking the pleasure of God Almighty is, and indeed should always be, the primary goal of every true believer. Here, I would also like to remove a common misconception. As I have just said, a true believer should always strive towards seeking the pleasure of God and this should be his primary objective. However, you should not think that when a Muslim says that he wants to please God so that he can attain a place in Paradise, it must mean that a Muslim will adopt extremism as a means to attain this objective.

Hopefully, the sentiments of gratitude that I have expressed ought to have removed any such misconceptions or fears, however if anyone continues to harbour such suspicions, then they should completely remove them from their hearts and minds. This is because all forms of extremism run completely

SEPTEMBER 2012 | THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS 61

Page 62: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

contrary to the real teachings of Islam. A true Muslim can never even contemplate the thought that the use of force or extremism to compel others towards Islam could ever be a means of attaining God’s pleasure.

We, Ahmadi Muslims, believe that the Founder of our Community, Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian(as), is the very Messiah, Reformer and Mahdi whose advent in the latter days was prophesised by Islam and all of the major religions. He, the Promised Messiah(as), taught that a person who adopts extremism and severity in religious matters does not understand God’s teachings, which were brought by all of the previous prophets and which were revealed in their most perfect form to the Holy Prophet Muhammad(saw). Thus, such a person can never attain the pleasure of God Almighty by acting in such a cruel way.

The Promised Messiah(as) has guided us and given us a lesson of the utmost importance, which is that if you wish to attain God’s favour and pleasure and desire for your prayers to be accepted, then you must cleanse your heart of all malice and hatred, even towards your enemies. He taught us that if you

bear grudges or hatred towards your opponents, then your prayers cannot be accepted. Furthermore, the Holy Qur’an itself has commanded that the enmity of a nation or its people should not prevent a believer from acting in a just and fair manner towards his opponents. The Qur’an expands upon this teaching by stating that to act with absolute justice is closer to righteousness and it is righteousness that is the underlying and fundamental principle for attaining God’s pleasure. What a beautiful teaching this is!

We have been taught that if you wish to be classed as a righteous person and want to be the recipient of God’s pleasure, it is not enough to only worship, and to offer prayers and to fast if it obligatory upon you. Instead, we have been commanded that it is against the principles of righteousness to act unjustly against other peoples or nations because of enmities and hatred. We are taught that such practices greatly displease God Almighty. Ultimately, we have been prevented not only from acting unjustly, but also it has also been made clear that we should not harbour or bear enmity at all towards anyone.

If we look in a fair and impartial

making the spread of generousity and compassion

62 THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS | SEPTEMBER 2012

Page 63: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

way at the era of the Holy Prophet Muhammad(saw) and thereafter at the era of the Rightly Guided Successors (Khulafa), then we observe that they never took part in offensive warfare. It is true, that when they were attacked they defended themselves, but they did so only to bring about reformation. All such defensive wars were conducted with a spirit of true justice and fairness. The Holy Qur’an, indeed, categorically states that once a war has ended and victory has been gained, then the victor must not transgress or display any form of cruelty towards the vanquished. Thus, where in the Holy Qur’an it says that your enmities should not lead you to act otherwise than with justice, the golden principle that Muslims have been taught is that you should not bear enmity in your heart towards any party or anyone. If others display enmity or hatred towards you, then still you should not deprive them of justice or their due rights. It is this beautiful teaching that inspires the Ahmadiyya Jama’at to constantly raise the slogan of: ‘Love for All, Hatred for None.’

In our hearts we, Ahmadis, bear enmity towards no one. Where hatred does not exist, there can be no enmity and it naturally follows that upon the scales of

justice, everybody will be treated equally. Thus, in light of these beautiful and pure teachings, is there room for any form of terrorism or extremism to remain? Based upon what I have just said, I am confident that if any person held even the slightest suspicion that Muslims are taught by Islam to adopt extremism in an effort to please God, then this misconception must surely now have been dispelled. Our non-Muslim friends should always remember and bear in mind that to consider all Muslims as extremists or terrorists is completely devoid of justice. The wrong and misguided acts of a handful of people, who are motivated by their vested interests, should not lead to all Muslims being portrayed or classed as extremists.

I would now like to say a few words about the importance of mosques themselves within the religion of Islam. First of all, it is essential to mention that the word ‘masjid,’ which is the Arabic word for ‘mosque,’ literally means a place where one prostrates. Thus, a mosque is a place where Muslims gather together to submit before the One God, to worship and to bow down before Him. In a mosque, the worshippers bow down before that very God Who has commanded Muslims that prior to every act, or before starting

SEPTEMBER 2012 | THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS 63

Page 64: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

any task, they should recite the following words:

(Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Raheem)

These words translated into English mean, ‘In the Name of Allah, the Gracious, Ever Merciful.’ Even in our formal prayers, after reciting a prayer seeking God’s protection from Satan, it is these very words that Muslims repeat. In other words, we start our prayers by stating that: Allah is He Who is the ‘Gracious,’ whereby He provides for us without us having made any request and Allah is also He who is the ‘Merciful,’ whereby He constantly provides for us in answer to our prayers and supplications.

Here, I would like to shed some light on these attributes of God. His Graciousness and Mercy are all encompassing and are granted to all Creation. In keeping with all of God’s other Attributes, it is human beings who derive the largest share and benefit of these attributes. God Almighty has commanded all people who claim to be true believers to adopt His attributes to the best of their abilities. We learn from a tradition of the Holy Prophet Muhammad(saw) that he taught that Allah the Almighty shows mercy only to those

who are merciful towards others. Based on this fundamental teaching, it could never be imagined that a true Muslim, who worships God, could ever keep in his heart a desire for any of God’s Creation to be harmed. Particularly, he could never desire for his fellow human beings to suffer in any way. If anyone enters a mosque with such hateful intentions then he will be deprived of God’s blessings and His mercy.

A true mosque is, as I have already said, a place to bow down and to beseech God seeking His mercy; but a person who enters a mosque to implore God’s mercy will not be successful until he himself manifests a true spirit of generousness, mercy and compassion towards all of those who are around him. Thus, a true Muslim is compelled to show graciousness and mercy to others, because that is the only way in which he himself can be a recipient of God’s pleasure, His graciousness and His mercy.

I am confident that based on what I have explained it will have become clear who a true Muslim is and what the purpose of mosques really are. It is with such great objectives in mind that we are inaugurating this mosque today and so it is that every Ahmadi Muslim

making the spread of generousity and compassion

who enters this House of God will come with the intention that, where he submits to God seeking His Mercy, he himself must also display mercy towards all of God’s Creation and in particular, towards mankind. With these heartfelt feelings of compassion and mercy instilled, he will be ever ready to serve humanity.

I am sure you will agree with me that if what I have described is the purpose of a mosque and this is the true Islam, then it is a beautiful purpose aligned to a beautiful teaching. I am also confident that, God Willing, the true purposes for which this Mosque was built will be fulfilled by the Ahmadi Muslims and thus if the local people have any doubts or suspicions, then they will soon be removed. With a desire for mutual goodwill and harmony we will strive towards the advancement and progress of the nation.

These days we find that widespread conflict and hatred has permeated all parts of the world and so there is an urgent need for mutual love, affection and mercy to be spread so that the world can be saved from the horrific and terrifying destruction that is fast approaching in the shape of a world war. May Allah enable every person in every society to recognise and instil good human values, Amin.

At the end, I would like to take the opportunity to once again thank all of the distinguished guests, from the depths of my heart, for attending today’s function. May Allah reward all of you abundantly. Thank you very much.”

Sariyyah of ‘Abdullah bin Jahsh(ra) towards NakhlahNaturally, the sudden attack of Kurz bin Jabir had terrified the Muslims greatly, and since there was a standing threat by the chieftains of Makkah that they would attack Madinah and utterly destroy the Muslims, the Muslims were severely apprehensive. Upon observing these very threats, the Holy Prophet(saw) decided that the movements of the Quraish should be surveyed from a closer distance, so that all the necessary intelligence with respect to them may be available on time, and Madinah was safeguarded from all kinds of sudden attacks. Hence, for this purpose, the Holy Prophet(saw) assembled a party of eight Muhajirin.1 As an act of wisdom, the Holy Prophet(saw) selected such men for this party who were from the various tribes of the Quraish,2 so that it was easier to obtain intelligence with regards to the hidden conspiracies of the Quraish. The Holy Prophet(saw) appointed his paternal cousin, ‘Abdullah

bin Jahsh(ra), as the Amir of this party. In order to ensure that the prime mission of this party was kept secret even from the Muslim masses, upon ordering this Sariyyah, the Holy Prophet(saw) did not even inform the Amir of this party as to where he was being sent and for what purpose. Rather, upon their departure, the Holy Prophet(saw) handed him a sealed letter and said that, “This letter contains necessary instructions for you. When you cover a distance of two days travel from Madinah, open the letter and act in accordance with the stipulated instructions.” As such, ‘Abdullah(ra) and his companions set out by the command of their Master. When they had journeyed a distance of two days from Madinah, ‘Abdullah(ra) opened the instructions of the Holy Prophet(saw), which were as follows:

“Go forth to the Valley of Nakhlah between Makkah and Ta’if, and obtain information on the Quraish and return with news therefrom.3”

Moreover, since an intelligence mission so close to Makkah was a very delicate task, at the bottom of this letter, the Holy Prophet(saw) had written that after the objective of this mission became known, if any one from among his companions was hesitant in accompanying this party and desired to return, then permission would be granted to do so. ‘Abdullah(ra) read out this guidance to his companions who unanimously affirmed that, “We happily present ourselves for this service.4” Then, this party proceeded to Nakhlah. Sa‘d bin Abi Waqqas(ra) and ‘Utbah bin Ghazwan(ra) lost their camels en-route, and were separated from their companions. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to relocate their companions. The party was now left with only six people. On this occasion, Mr. Margolius has written that Sa‘d bin Abi Waqqas(ra) and ‘Utbah(ra) intentionally let their camels loose and used this as an excuse to remain behind. Each and every life event of these devotees of Islam, who were ready to sacrifice their lives, is a testimony to their valour and devotion. One of them was martyred at the hands of the disbelievers in the campaign of B‘ir-e-Ma‘unah, while the other distinctly participated in many dangerous battles and ultimately became the victor of Iraq. Therefore, to doubt the

sincerity of such people, especially when that doubt is founded on self-concocted notions, is the work of Mr. Margolius alone. It is ironic that in his book, Mr. Margolius claims that he has written this book being completely free from prejudice. In any case, this is a side issue. This small community reached Nakhlah and became engaged in their work. With the thought of concealing their classified mission, some of them shaved their heads, so that travellers, etc., would not be alarmed in any way, and so that they would consider them as being such people who had come with the intention of ‘Umrah. However, they had only just arrived there, when suddenly a small caravan of the Quraish also happened to arrive, which was travelling from Ta’if to Makkah, and both parties encountered each other. The Muslims consulted one another as to what should be done. The Holy Prophet(saw) had sent them for the purpose of secretly obtaining intelligence, but on the other hand, war had begun with the Quraish. Both opponents were before one another and naturally there was a risk that now, since the people from the caravan of the Quraish had spotted the Muslims, their covert intelligence mission would no longer remain secret. Another predicament was that some Muslims thought that it was perhaps the

last day of Rajab, i.e., a sacred month in which fighting was prohibited as per the ancient Arabian custom. Others thought that Rajab had passed and the month of Sha‘ban had started.5 In some narrations it has been related that this Sariyyah was dispatched in Jamadiyul-Akhir, and there was a doubt as to whether this day was of Jamadi or Rajab.6 However, on the other hand, the Valley of Nakhlah was situated right on the outskirts of the Haram7 and it was obvious that if a decision was not made that day, the caravan would have entered the Haram on the following day, the sanctity of which was definite. Hence, taking all of these factors into consideration, it was finally decided that the caravan should be attacked, and the people of the caravan should either be taken captive or killed. Therefore, they launched an attack in the name of Allah, and as a result, one man, whose name was ‘Amr bin Al-Hadrami, was killed, and two were taken captive. However, the fourth individual unfortunately escaped, and the Muslims were unable to apprehend him. Thereafter, the Muslims seized the goods of the caravan. Since one man belonging to the Quraish had escaped, and news of this conflict would inevitably reach Makkah quickly, ‘Abdullah bin Jahsh(ra) and his companions swiftly returned to Makkah with the spoils.

On this occasion, Mr. Margolius writes that Muhammad(saw) deliberately dispatched this company in the Sacred Month, because in this month the Quraish naturally would have been unmindful, and the Muslims would find an easy and definite opportunity to raid their caravan. However, every sensible individual can understand that a small party of this nature could not have been dispatched to such a far off region to plunder a caravan, especially when the enemy headquarters were so nearby. Furthermore, history categorically establishes that this party had merely been dispatched for the purpose of obtaining intelligence. Moreover, when the Holy Prophet(saw) found out that the Companions had attacked the caravan, he was extremely displeased. As such, it is narrated that when they presented themselves before the Holy Prophet(saw) and informed him of the entire account, the Holy Prophet(saw) was extremely displeased and said:

“I have not given you permission to fight in the Sacred Month.8”

Then it is written that: “The Holy Prophet(saw) refused to accept the spoils.”9

SEPTEMBER 2012 | THE REvIEW OF RELIGIONS 69

Page 70: The Review of Religions (Sep 2012)

Upon this, ‘Abdullah(ra) and his companions felt extreme remorse and shame. Then it is written that:

“They thought that due to their incurring the displeasure of God and His Messenger, they had been ruined.10”

Even the other Companions reproached them and said:

“You did that which you had not been ordered, and you fought in the Sacred Month, although you had not been ordered at all to fight in this campaign.11”

On the other hand, the Quraish also raised a huge hue and cry, that the Muslims had violated the sanctity of the Sacred Month. Since the person who had been killed (‘Amr bin Al-Hadrami) was a chieftain, and was also an ally of ‘Utbah bin Rabi‘ah (a chieftain of Makkah) this occurrence greatly enraged the Quraish’s fire of fury. They began to prepare for an attack upon Madinah with even greater zeal and uproar. Hence, the Battle of Badr, which shall be mentioned ahead, was primarily a result of this very preparation and vehement enmity. Therefore, upon this occurrence, there was murmuring both among the Muslims and disbelievers, and finally the following Qur’anic verse

was revealed, which provided a means of relief for the Muslims:

“People ask thee about fighting in the Sacred Month. Tell them: ‘Undoubtedly, fighting in the Sacred Month is a great transgression, but to forcefully hinder men from the religion of God in the Sacred Month; rather, to disbelieve in relation to the Sacred Month and the Sacred Mosque, i.e., to violate their sanctity, and then to turn out by coercion, the inhabitants of the Haram, as you are guilty of doing, O ye idolaters, is a greater sin with Allah than fighting in the Sacred Month; and verily, to persecute in the land during the Sacred Month is worse than such fighting, which is for the purpose of preventing persecution. O Ye Muslims! The state of the disbelievers is such that they have become so blinded in their enmity towards you that they will not cease fighting you at any time and at any place, until they turn you back from your faith, if they find the power to do so.12’”

Therefore, history establishes that the chieftains of the Quraish would spread their bloody propaganda even in the Sacred Months. As a matter of fact, they became even more active in their evil designs during these months, taking benefit of the gatherings and journeys which would take place in

the life & character of the seal of the prophets

the Sacred Months. Furthermore, with great shamelessness, in order to gratify themselves with a false satisfaction, they would re-arrange the order of the Sacred Months, which was known as Nas’i. Then, later on they crossed all bounds, when during the era of the Treaty of Hudaibiyyah, despite there being a firm covenant and agreement, the disbelievers of Makkah and their allies took up the sword against an ally tribe of the Muslims, in the area of the Haram. And then, when the Muslims set out in support of this tribe, they fought against them as well in the very region of the Haram. Hence, it was only natural for the Muslims to find comfort in this response, but the Quraish were also brought to level. During this time, two of their men arrived in Madinah in order to have their two captives released. However, until now, Sa‘d bin Abi Waqqas(ra) and ‘Utbah(ra) had not returned. On their account, the Holy Prophet(saw) greatly feared that if the Quraish happened to seize them, they would not release them alive. Hence, for this reason, the Holy Prophet(saw) refused to release the captives until they returned and said, “When my men safely reach Madinah, I will release yours.” Therefore, when they both reached Madinah, the Holy Prophet(saw) released both captives for a ransom. However, from among

these two captives, one individual was so deeply impressed by the high moral qualities of the Holy Prophet(saw), and the truth of the Islamic teaching during his stay at Madinah, that even after his release, he refused to return, and joined the servants of the Holy Prophet(saw). He was finally martyred at Bi‘r-e-Ma‘unah; his name was Hakam bin Kiyan(ra)13.

NOTE ABOUT REfERENCES

verse references to the Holy Qur’an count ‘Bismillah…’ (In the Name of Allah…) as the first verse of each Chapter. In some non-standard texts, this is not counted. Should the reader refer to such texts, the verse quoted in The Review of Religions will be found a verse earlier, i.e. at one verse less than the number quoted in this journal. For the ease of non-Muslim readers, ‘(saw)’ or ‘saw’ after the words, ‘Holy Prophet’, or the name ‘Muhammad’, are used normally in small letters. They stand for ‘Sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam’ meaning ‘peace and blessings of Allah be upon him’. Likewise, the letters ‘(as)’ or ‘as’ after the name of all other prophets is an abbreviation meaning ‘peace be upon him’ derived from ‘Alaihis salatu wassalam’ which are words that a Muslim utters out of respect whenever he or she comes across that name. The abbreviation ‘ra’ or (ra) stands for ‘Radhiallahu Ta’ala anhu and is used for Companions of a Prophet, meaning Allah be pleased with him or her (when followed by the relevant Arabic pronoun). Finally, ‘ru’ or (ru) for Rahemahullahu Ta’ala means the Mercy of Allah the Exalted be upon him. In keeping with current universal practice, local transliterations of names of places are preferred to their anglicised versions, e.g. Makkah instead of Mecca, etc.
