EDITORIAL

AGENDA - DIARY

Welcome to the May issue of The Resident. As I sit here writing this editorial accompanied by a symphony of car horns and fi recrackers celebrating Barça winning the Primera Liga, it reminds me that we are only some three weeks away from the start of The World Cup.Having witnessed a number of World Cups whilst living in southern Spain it serves to spotlight the wide range of nationalities that make up our cosmopolitan community. It doesn’t seem to matter which country is playing, you will always fi nd in one bar or another a group of fans from that country enjoying the match (or not as the case might be), and if your country gets knocked out, well you can just transfer your allegiance and continue to enjoy the tournament in good company.Anyway, back to the current celebrations which are in no small way thanks to a valiant 1-all draw by Malaga against Real Madrid, which secured Malaga’s next season in the top fl ight of Spanish football, so congratulations to ‘Los Boquerones’.Regardless of what the weather might do, or however much the recession or Icelandic volcanoes try to spoil the party, summer is defi nitely in the air. The beaches are beginning to fi ll, people are beginning to dip a toe in the sea (I think I’ll wait ‘til July thank you), and the party season has begun. It also means for us parents the dreaded approach of the summer holidays. Yes folks it’s only some fi ve weeks before little ‘Johnny’ and ‘Mary’ break up for the three months that constitute the Spanish summer holidays. Fortunately my two are of an age where they entertain themselves, but I know that for those of you with younger kids, occupying the little darlings during the summer break can be a real challenge. With this in mind from next month we will be bringing you a few ideas of what to do and where to go this summer. It’s not just the kids that need entertaining, and fortunately there is plenty going on for the adults too. Check out our What’s On Section on pages 18 to 20 of this month’s paper to see some of the events going on over the next month. You can also fi nd more information on our website www.theresident.es or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/theresident.spain.Well that’s it for this month but before I go I’ll leave you with one fi nal word...Sunscreen!

The Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society is overwhelmed by the support generated by its Facebook campaign against proposals to create a dolphinarium in Gibraltar. With over 2,700 members GONHS feels it is a clear message to the promoters that they are simply not wanted here.Since hearing about the proposals, GONHS has been working quietly behind the scenes, gathering information and keeping Government - which as yet has not made public a position on what is a private proposal - informed of its concerns..The scheme includes an aquarium and museum (to which GONHS does not object), and a pen, in Rosia Bay, which would hold 18 bottle-nosed dolphins and 9 sea lions.A meeting was held on Friday 30 April between GONHS and the promoters of the project, which included local backers Europa Point Marine Village Limited and, through a video link to Florida, representatives of American company, Ocean Embassy. At the meeting, which lasted over one hour, GONHS expounded its concerns about the proposals, and pointed out the dubious commercial viability, in any case, of the project. GONHS stressed the long history of appreciation of wild dolphins in Gibraltar waters. The promoters argued that their work would aid conservation, a claim rejected by GONHS, and that they would provide a stranded dolphin rehabilitation facility. The GONHS representatives were quick to point out that there is no need for this, as strandings in Gibraltar are less than one a decade and that this was a “red herring” being thrown at the dolphins, on the assumption that experts in Gibraltar were gullible enough to be convinced by what were shallow arguments. The Ocean Embassy representatives admitted that the dolphins would be “obtained from the Asian market”, a reference clearly to the well known capturing of dolphins in that region,

GONHS calls for rejection of dolphinarium proposal

especially off Japan, covered in the award winning documentary The Cove (which they dismissed simply as “propaganda”). They also confi rmed that the dolphins intended for Gibraltar were wild. There was also a suggestion in the discussion that, although “not for the moment”, there was a possibility that their operation would in the future capture dolphins from Gibraltar waters. GONHS stressed the fact that a dolphinarium would serve no conservation or research purpose in a local context, regardless of the origin of the dolphins.GONHS totally rejects these proposals as unnecessary and unjustifi ed as well as potentially illegal, given that cetaceans are protected by Gibraltar and EU laws.Following the meeting, GONHS asked the local representatives to withdraw the project, which they refused to do.Dolphinaria are a thing of the past. While some of the old dolphinaria, which were created when there was much less knowledge and awareness, do some good work, there is simply no justifi cation for creating new ones and enslaving more wild dolphins. The UK, for example, is dolphinarium-free as is much of Europe, and having such an anachronism in Gibraltar would be an embarrassment in the eyes of many millions of people around the world – as well as to thousands of Gibraltarians. There are three Gibraltar-based companies listed in the project’s documentation. GONHS will be asking all three to withdraw their support for the dolphinarium.GONHS has also again been in contact with Government asking them to reject the proposals outright.GONHS is particularly grateful to the hundreds of concerned citizens who have rallied round to defend the dolphins and is committed to continue its efforts relentlessly until the project is cancelled.Add your support to this campaign and join the facebook group “Stop the Proposed Dolphinarium in Gibraltar!”

Building workers discover ‘lost’ watchtower

Workers at the old Chullera III campsite discovered the remains of a 15th Century watchtower during renovation works. Part of the programme was the demolition of the old Cortijo de la Duquesa which had been serving as the site’s restaurant before it closed a few years back. It was during this demolition that it was discovered that part of the building was in fact the bottom 5 metres of this ‘Torre Almenara’ one of a string of such towers ordered built by the Catholic Monarchs at the end of the 15th

Century to protect the coastline from raids by Barbary pirates. The last reference to the tower was documented in the 19th century, where it was listed as a navigation reference point, but it was believed that it had been destroyed during the construction of the Cortijo.Specialists will now remove the roof and all traces of the later construction as part of a conservation plan for the tower.

Manilva’s indoor footballers promoted

A goal from Benito in the second half of extra time was enought to give local indoor football team Manilva FS victory against Almuñécar 77 and promotion to indoor football’s Primera Nacional B division. With the aggregate score standing at 8-all

at the end of normal time in this second leg - the Granada team having won 4-3 in the fi rst leg, it took Benito’s strike to give Manilva a 5-3 win on the day, 9-8 on aggregate.

Opening “Cocina Alemanas”in Estepona with Charity buff et

Neither rain nor thunderstorm could deter the benefi t event for abandoned animals, and Sandra Rettkowski once again hosted the event at her new kitchen studio “Cocinas Alemanas” in Estepona. The event, organised by Jutta and Gerd Bauer, was in aid of rescued dogs and when it fi nally stopped raining, Uschi and Piet fi red up the barbecue outside, and everybody joined the sausage stand attracted by the seductive smell.Inside the kitchen studio the lovely songs performed by Susan, soon had people dancing.Over 50 Spanish, German, British, and other animal lovers

attended and enjoyed the music, the wonderful buffet, and last but not least the seven most delicious tarts sponsored partly by Alex proprietor of the well known restaurant Rilex in Sabinillas.Everybody enjoyed the afternoon in the lovely sunshine, and were very happy when the collection was counted to reveal a grand total of 430 euros which will go to Brigittboll, who fosters many of the dogs, to pay the upcoming pet food bills. In the meantime, it has been possible to pay all the veterinary costs accumulated during the last year for 14 rescued dogs.

for Avda Juan Carlos, Avda Puerto del Mar on their way to Estepona Port where they will stop for an hour.At 2.30 they will leave the Port taking Avda del Carmen until Avda Juan Carlos I once again from where they will return to the recinto ferial at about 2.50 pm. Needless to say these timings are approximate.

Información: www.slmlive.com/mco y en www.slmlive.com Stephen Lloyd-Morgan with The Marbella Concert Orchestra/summerevents

Stephen Lloyd-Morgan with The Marbella Concert OrchestraThe Summer Event Concerts - El Castillo de la Duquesa

Following the phenomenal success of The Summer Event Concert last year, this summer there will be two concerts inside El Castillo de la Duquesa on Saturday 24th July & Saturday 21st August, sponsored and supported by Ibex Insurance, Essential Marbella Magazine, Talk Radio Europe & Fischer Car Group, and in collaboration with the Ayuntamiento de Manilva. The concerts will star popular Tenor Stephen Lloyd-Morgan with the new and specially formed 16-piece Marbella Concert Orchestra, conducted by renowned Musical Director Ian Green, with a selection of songs from Musical Theatre, Opera and Cross-Over, sung in English, Italian and Spanish.Special guest artists also bringing an eclectic and contemporary repertoire to the event include Yazz, International Recording Artist; Maria Lourdes Benitez, Soprano from El Coro de Ópera de Málaga and Rebecca Tate, Spain´s WOW Factor Runner-up amongst others still to be announced.Event organiser Nick Holland said, “We are very excited about bringing the Marbella

Concert Orchestra to accompany Steve at this year´s concerts in Duquesa. We are also delighted that Yazz, who very rarely performs in Spain, has agreed to join the special guest line-up. The costs incurred by bringing a live orchestra, as well as a more spectacular sound and lighting show this year, has resulted in an increased ticket price. But we are certain the sweeping improvements we have made since last year to both the content and staging of the concerts will be appreciated by the audiences and hope will lead to another very unique and successful event!”Tickets, €40, will go on sale from 9th June, from Beccy´s, Monte Duquesa; Christina´s Cards, Sabinillas; Glitterati Books, Centro Diane Benavista & Anglo Wines, Sotogrande or call 697 783 942.Steve´s fi rst performance with The Marbella Concert Orchestra will be at the prestigious 10th Anniversary Max Clifford Celebrity Butterfl y Ball Gala in aid of The Rhys Daniels Trust at the Hotel Puente Romano on 5th June.Information: www.slmlive.com/mco & www.slmlive.com Stephen Lloyd-Morgan with The Marbella Concert Orchestra/summerevents

ADANA Baby Boom

The Estepona animal rescue charity, ADANA, has been inundated with abandoned puppies. Over the last two weeks a total of 30 puppies have been brought to the kennels. First was a litter of 5 two day old pups found in the middle of the road in the poligono. There was no sign of their mother “We had just started phoning around to see if we could fi nd volunteers to hand rear the pups when another car arrived with a female dog found on the Casares road. The dog had lost its pups and was heavy with milk. We put her with the pups and she has adopted them as her own”, said Helen Ellis, an ADANA volunteer. It was their lucky day.A few days later a litter of 10 Mastin cross pups arrived. They were not very well and two have died but the others are growing rapidly. Hot on their heels came 5 more very young pups found in a

bucket by the basura in Estepona. “The Bucketeers” are all healthy and growing well. All of these puppies need to fi nd loving homes and most are ready to go now. “We have over 150 dogs in our care at the moment and we are always in need of help to keep going. Without ADANA these little puppies would not have survived. Their future and that of all the other adult dogs is entirely reliant on donations from the public and the goodwill of the volunteers who look after them”, said Janet Greenstreet, President of ADANA. “Far from decreasing, the problem of mistreatment and abandonment of pets is getting worse every month. We need any help we can get whether it comes in the form of giving a few hours to help or whatever cash can be spared. Please contact ADANA on 952 113 467 or at [email protected]

ADANA Baby Boom

‘The Infernal Comedy’ is a stage drama-concert for a Baroque-Orchestra, two Sopranos and one actor. It is based on the real-life story of Austrian, Jack Unterweger, played by John Malkovich, a convicted murderer and acclaimed poet, who became a celebrated author and journalist, after being pardoned.A notorious womanizer, and prime example of reintegration, he gradually became the main suspect in the murder of a growing number of prostitutes. Having fl ed Vienna, he was arrested in Miami, extradited and fi nally committed suicide in prison after being convicted of murder in eleven cases.‘The Infernal Comedy’ gives the audience the chance to meet Unterweger during one of this lectures, this time in the underworld. It is the lecture of his “real” autobiography.

Age Concern’s Australian ChristmasAs the sun has appeared it must be the time to mention Christmas – not the one in December but the Australian one that Age Concern is having on Friday June 25th at Armstrongs Restaurant in Sabinillas. What better time to have a fun fi lled lunch with a full, typical, Christmas dinner, a pantomime (albeit a short one), a raffl e, along with the odd surprise. We believe that Santa may appear as he will be in the area for his summer break! The cost will be 17 euros per person for volunteers and Friends of Age Concern, 19 euros for all other guests. To make a reservation please call 951 318 234 and leave your details, or call Richard on 952 913 174 or email [email protected] all starts at 1.30 pm for 2 pm, and places will go quickly – so do not delay, phone today.

Sponsored WalkThirty intrepid walkers strode out on Sunday May 2nd to raise much needed funds for Age Concern. Walkers had a

Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva

choice of a short or long walk – the latter going up to the castillo del nicio where wonderful views of the Costa del Sol and inland mountains awaited. The walk raised 1,000€ to support the Age Concern volunteers working with older people in the community.IBEX insurance sponsored the walk and Age Concern is extremely grateful to them and their walkers. Thanks also go to Richard and Julie who organised the event as well as to all who walked.

LifelineFor elderly people who require help or advice Age Concern operate a telephone service called Lifeline. This gives the individual a direct point of contact with the charity. The telephone number is 650163928. It should be noted that Age Concern is not an emergency service. There is also an email address where you can contact Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva. a percentage of the money raised at this event to CUDECA which is the Club’s chosen charity for this year. It is hoped that you will support this day. Last year this event was a sell out, so do not be disappointed and miss this exciting event. The Estepona Floral Art Club will not meet during July and August, so the next demonstration will be held at The Benavista Country Club, Benavista, on Tuesday, 21st September 2010, where the club will be welcoming Dulcie Lofting, NAFAS Area Demonstrator from Kings Lynn, Norfolk. The Estepona Floral Art Club is always pleased to welcome visitors at each month’s demonstrations, so for further information on the above or any future events, contact the Chairman, Marilyn Pemberton on Tel: 952 928 197Alternatively go to the webpage on www.bestofmarbella.com and click on the link Estepona Floral Art Club.

In 2009 the Asociacion de Residentes del Extranjeros del Municipio de Estepona (AREME) decided to open up Membership to all non-Spanish residents or home owners of Estepona as opposed to the heads of various foreign groups. This move changed a membership level of 20 people (but theoretically representing some 3,000 residents) to include all foreigners dwelling in Estepona. The aim being to provide Members with ‘greater ínfl uence’ in the Town Hall.AREME is a non-political organization which considers the strategic infl uence it can bring to developments within the Estepona community. It is not a ´Citizens Advice Bureau´ and can not represent individual concerns, but it can point Members in the right direction.

Foreign Residents Association of Estepona

It is hoped that all foreign people living or working in Estepona will become Members of the Association so they can come together, as a group, to be a voice in the Community.More than a quarter of those living in Estepona are foreigners and as such should have more consideration and assistance from the Town Hall. The annual Membership Fee is only 1 euro and it represents good value. If everyone joinx the Association there will be enough (imports to Spain!) to infl uence matters affecting this section of the community in the Town Hall.So join AREME now - it is very important that you have a voice in these diffi cult times.

The ICE Club is a social club for all English-speaking people, and holds many events during the week, such as: Music, dancing and themed supper evenings. Day and holiday coach trips.

European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) UpdateThere has been some confusion around the new process for applying for the EHIC and the nature of its use. Please be assured that, if you are registered for healthcare as stated above, you are now entitled to the UK-issued card and do not need to return it to the Department of Health. Also remember that this card is only for use when you are on a temporary visit outside your country of residence and is not for use in Spain. Your normal medical cover inSpain is not affected in any way.If you are experiencing problems in getting your UK-issued EHIC, please contact the Overseas Healthcare Team on 0044 191 218 1999.Those of you who are resident in Spain and registered for healthcare under an E121 or E109 form, and your dependants, should now be aware that as from 1st May you apply to the UK for your European Health Insurance Card, rather than to Spain.Employment Support Allowance (ESA)ESA is a UK benefi t for people who cannot work due to illness or disability. It was introduced in October 2008 to replace incapacity benefi t for new applicants. The focus of ESA is different to that of incapacity benefi t. Rather than looking at what a person

cannot do, the emphasis is on providing support to help the customer back into appropriate work, if they are able. ESA involves a medical assessmentcalled a Work Capability Assessment which looks at what the person can do and the personalised support they require. If you suffer from an illness or disability that affects your ability to work, and you have worked in the UK in the last 3 years, you may be entitled to ESA.Contact the International Pension Centre on 0044 191 218 7122 for details on how to apply. However, if you last worked in Spain, you could be entitled to Spanish benefi t. Legality of your insurance policyIt is perfectly legal to have your vehicle insured by a British insurance company registered to operate in Spain. There are legal criterions that need to be met. The group should be able to provide you with a Spanish translation of your covering documents. If this is not the case, consider having a notorised translation of the same. By law you should also carry proof of payment of the policy. residence. This implies that you reside in the country for a period of six months or more in any given year. Please note that you are now expected to renew this document every second year. Casa del Campo registration deadlineThere are a multitude of casas del campo dotted around the provinces which have not been registered on an escritura (title deeds). The autonomous government had given one months notice to be able to inscribe your property. The deadline was the 7th of May of this year. The authorities clearly stated that after this date your dwelling would be considered illegal and with no possibility of changing its status. No one would be willing to buy a property that does not possess a title deed. We are looking at the options that may be available to those who have not as yet recorded their home.

ACHES and PAINSWhat is pain?

It is an attention grabbing message which travels to the brain along our nerves and our nerves are all safely embedded within our body’s muscles.

What causes pain? Pain has just 3 causes. A nerve is; 1) diseased, 2) injured or 3) it is being squashed. If you are not diseased and not injured but still you have pain,

then your nerves are being squashed by your own seizing muscles. When seizing muscles tighten, they squeeze our nerves and we ache.

When muscles seize, they squash our nerves and we feel pain. But the GOOD NEWS is SEIZED MUSCLES CAN BE CURED

CRAMP, TINGLES, NUMBNESS,VARICOSE VEINSThese are all signs of seized muscles squashing our blood

vessels and causing an interrupted blood supply. Our 100,000km or 60,000 miles of blood vessels, both arteries and veins all exist safely embedded within our muscles’ fi bres. When our muscles seize and tighten then our veins are squeezed upwards to the muscle’s surface, creating “varicose veins” and our arteries become squashed deep inside, restricting our blood supply and causing it to slow.

And the GOOD NEWS is VARICOSE VEINS CAN BE CURED When an artery is being squashed and blood fl ow reduced, we experience

“numbness” in our arms, hands, legs and feet as they, lacking in blood, “go to sleep”. When the blood comes fl ooding back then we get the

“tingling” of “pins and needles” as the area refi lls with blood. What Causes Cramp?

When one seized muscle completely squashes an artery, stopping the blood fl ow then the following muscle, the “next one in sequence” for the

blood, is “starved of blood”. It goes into “spasm”, it “cramps”. The Muscle Renewal System is unique and it works.

Heartworm and Prevention

Heartworm or Dirofi lariasis is a potentially fatal parasitic disease that primarily affects dogs, ferrets and cats very rarely also been affected, and is transmitted from an affected dog by the bite of a mosquito. The parasite is a roundworm, which as an adult lives in some of the blood vessels around the heart and in the heart itself. The mature female produces free-swimming larvae, which the mosquito picks up when it bites an affected animal. This larva develops in the mosquito and in 2-3 weeks becomes infective for other dogs bitten by said mosquito. This larvae, back in a dog, travels through the blood stream to the heart where it matures and completes its life cycle. This process takes about six months; one infested dog can be a reservoir for an entire

neighbourhood, no breed is immune.Your veterinarian would suspect this disease if you live and/or have travelled to a mosquito infested area and bring in your pet with some of the following symptoms: laboured breathing, coughing, tires easily, listless and/or weight loss. These may be symptoms of other problems as well. The only defi nitive diagnosis is reached by a blood test that most veterinarians can carry out in their surgeries. If the test is positive, a treatment program should be initiated as soon as possible. Over 90% of dogs treated for this disease survive. If the dog is negative or once an affected dog is cured preventative measures should be instituted. This is one disease your dog may be affected by even if you do not live in an area identifi ed as having

heartworms, your pet could bring this home from a holiday or an outing to an affected area.Presently, much research is being done with many phases of this disease. Up until only recently, within the last few years, the only preventative measure available was an oral medication, which had to be taken on a monthly basis. We now can offer an annual vaccination against this disease, which has its advantages here due to our climate and seasonality of the mosquito vector. By discussing this disease with your veterinarian and instituting the optimum preventative measures in your case, heartworm need not be a problem for you or threaten your pet.

After 2 hours of tournament and more than hundred games, the U10s reached the fi nal facing a team from England. Although they got off to a bad start, they managed to equal the game and got a draw seconds

before its end. However, due to the event rules, the English team was crowned champions.Coaches and players were satisfi ed with the results though as they had the chance to experience what is like to play at the Emirates under the gaze of hundreds of spectators. It is the aim of the Arsenal Soccer School in Sotogrande to give the boys the opportunity to live a unique and once in a life time experience and keep working hard to achieve their sporting objectives within the Costa del Sol community.

U Estepona CF secure their place in Segunda B

With two matches left to play a second half goal was enough to give Estepona victory against Marbella and ensure their place in next season’s Segundo B.The 1 – 0 scoreline rather fl attered the visitors as Estepona had numerous opportunities in front of goal and had by far the most possession. Marbella had a couple of shots saved, but showed all the body language of a side already relegated.

Estepona went on to draw 1-all with Betis B in the fi nal match, fi nishing the season in tenth place out of the twenty teams, a position that hid the dramas of the fi rst half of the season which had seen fi nancial problems and an offer of resignation from the President Eugenio Muñoz.Fans can now enjoy the summer sure in the knowledge that their team has more than earned its place in the Segunda B.
