The most often-asked question I havereceived so far in 2013: “Rabbi, whyis Pesach so early this year?” Of course,
it is only early on the civil calendar. It fallson the 15th of Nisan on the Hebrew
calendar as it does each year. But because we did not have aleap year (which would have added a month to the calendar),Pesach this year falls in late March. But you really haven’t seenearly yet until you look ahead to September, 2013 to see thatRosh Hashanah is the same week as Labor Day whileanksgiving is also the first day/second night of Hanukkahin November, 2013. at being said, we will have a leap monthin the next Jewish year which will move everything back inplace. But I digress.
Rabbis love questions because Judaism is all about askingquestions — for that is how true learning happens. Perhaps thebest example of this is that we start the Pesach Seder with theyoungest among us asking questions. In this spirit, I offer a fewinsights on ‘questioning’ from some of my favorite sources.
Questioning is a sign of freedom. Slaves don’t askquestions. To ask a question is to demonstrate one’s freedom toexplore, to analyze, to investigate, as well as to question thesymbols, rituals, and philosophies of the Seder experience(R. Wolfson, FJMC Haggadah).
e Talmud specifies that asking questions is so importantthat even if you find yourself alone on the Seder night, you shouldask yourself the questions. Even two scholars who know all thelaws of Passover are to ask one another. (Wolfson on Pesachim).
Jewish tradition is filled with the notion that the questionis more important than the answer. We are a people who haveconstantly questioned, and every good educator knows thathe/she values a gute kasha (good question). (Shlomo Riskin Hag-gadah).
Mah Nishtanah reminds us that the Jewish emphasis onlearning is underscored at a very early age. e youngest at theSeder is given a prominent role as a full participant in the hopethat it will make a meaningful impression on everyone aschildren are encouraged to question their elders. In Judaism, our youngest are supposed to be seen and heard.
I add here just four more questions I hope you willconsider at your own Seders:
• If you were told you had to leave home immediately, whatwould you take with you?
• Would you put a baby in a basket and float it down a riverfilled with crocodiles to perhaps save his/her life?
• Why was it so important for the Israelites to put the blood ofthe lamb on their doors? Wouldn’t God have known to havethe Angel of Death pass over their homes without it?
• What is so special about the Prophet Elijah that we invitehim both into our homes on Pesach and after Shabbat eachweek during the Havdalah ceremony?
Remember, there are no wrong answers and no wrongquestions. So, ask away… as Susan, Atara, Micah and Elan joinme in wishing you a Chag Kasher Pesach – a Happy Passoverfrom our home to yours!
Revving Up Our Questions for the Pesach SederRabbi Joseph H. Krakoff [email protected] • Follow me on Twitter: @rabbikrakoff
If you love somebody, set them free!”Sting sang in his first post-Police soloalbum, quoting the famous 20th cen-
tury aphorism (author unknown). Indeed,as we approach the holiday of Passover:
z’man cheruteinu—the season of our freedom, we give thanks toGod for God’s love for us and His “setting us” free. Of course, the second part of the poem that Sting was referencing goes, “Ifit returns, it’s yours.” When Moses stood before Pharaoh he didnot merely declare “Let my people go,” but rather, “Let my peo-ple go so that they may serve [God]” (Exodus 9:1). God releasedus from Egyptian bondage not simply to be free, but rather thatin our freedom we would “return” to serve our heavenly Lordrather than an earthly one. In this case freedom means our re-lease from the services of a temporal and oppressive, earthlymonarch so we can serve the loving, forgiving King of Kings.
Are we doing a good job of showing God that we are His?In Jewish tradition, God’s love is made manifest by His gift tous of the Torah. Like a devoted parent who instructs his chil-
dren to look both ways before crossing the street and to playnicely with others, God gave us life’s “little instruction manual.”Are we truly listening to our Heavenly Parent? Are we honor-ing God’s gift of freedom? “If you love something, set it free. Ifit returns, it’s yours…”
As we enter this season of our freedom, let us not only ex-plore the cabinets of our kitchen for chametz, but let us ex-plore our lives for how we might deepen our relationship withand better serve our Creator. Is there one more mitzvah—onemore sacred obligation—we can take upon ourselves? Howmight we seek to transform our lives by the performance ofthese mitzvot? Are we, indeed, returning to God? “If you lovesomebody, set them free” Sting sang decades ago. God did justthat; He set us free. is Passover 5773, let us recall that “everybreath [we] take,” God is watching us. Let us remember thatGod “can’t stand losing you.” And, even and especially in thishustle-bustle 21st century world, if we return to God in ourvast freedom, we might just find that we can walk amongst “thefields of gold.”

KASHERING OF UTENSILSe process of kashering utensils depends on how the utensilsare used. According to halakah, leaven can be purged froma utensil by the same process in which it was absorbed inthe utensil (ke-voleo kakh poleto). erefore, utensils usedin cooking are kashered by boiling, those used in broilingare kashered by fire and heat, and those used only for coldfood are kashered by rinsing.

Metal baking utensils cannot be kashered.
GLASSWARE Drinking and serving utensils (plates, servingplatters, etc.) Authorities disagree as to the method ofkashering glass utensils used for drinking and eating. Oneopinion required soaking in water for three days, changingthe water every 24 hours. e other opinion requires onlythat one thoroughly scrub them or put them through a dish-washer. Glass cookware includes cookware made of modernmaterials that are as non-porous as glass, such as Pyrex®.ere is a difference of opinion as to whether glass cookwareneeds to be kashered. One opinion is that it must be kash-ered. After thoroughly cleaning it, wait 24 hours. en, boilwater in it that overflows the rim, or immerse it into boilingwater. e other opinion is that, only a thorough cleansingis required. Others believe that glass cookware cannot bekashered. Glass bakeware, like metal bakeware, cannot bekashered for Passover.
TABLES, CLOSETS AND COUNTERSIf used with chametz, they should be thoroughly cleanedand covered, and then they may be used. Note that thecovering material should be made of material that is noteasily torn.

It was with deep sadness that we said goodbye to Rabbi Irwin Groner(z’l) on December 30, 2012. For so many of our member families,Rabbi Groner’s many years of leadership, scholarship and friendship atCongregation Shaarey Zedek helped define the identity of our shul.
Below are some of the remarks from his memorial service, and a selec-tion of the many tributes and memorials that came pouring in.Additional information may be found on the website of theIra Kaufman Chapel, www.irakaufman.com.
On behalfof the
past presi-dents, the offi-cers, the Boardof Directors, and the entirecongregation, Ioffer my deep-est sympathiesto Leypsa,David, Amy,Joel, and the
entire Groner family. Rabbi Groner wasmy Rabbi. He officiated at my Bar Mitz-vah and at my daughters’ Bat Mitzvahs. He started me on my path of being activein the community, and like so many ofus, he connected us to Shaarey Zedek.
I have known Rabbi Groner and theGroner family almost my entire life. Deb-bie (z’l) and I were classmates at Hillel.David and Amy are close friends, andLeypsa continues to offer me support.
Rabbi Groner devoted himself toCSZ and for that we are all grateful. CSZwas his life. We all were his family. He al-ways had time for us. He was our Rabbi, our friend, our spiritual leader, ourteacher, our advisor, our psychiatrist, allwrapped into one. He cared about us, henurtured us, and he loved us.
He taught us the importance of beingJewish, the importance of community andfamily, the importance of Am Yisrael, theimportance of good deeds, and the impor-tance of living ethical lives in accordancewith the laws of the Torah. He taught usby example, by his actions and his deeds, and of course he taught us by his sermons.
Rabbi Groner was the premier oratorof his generation. His sermons were mag-ical. ey had a rhythm, a special ca-dence. ey touched our neshomas andour deepest emotions. He could make us
cry and moments later he could make uslaugh. He spoke of the human condi-tion, on issues that impacted and affectedour lives. He could take the most com-plicated topic or philosophical quandaryand make it understandable. No matterthe topic we always were enriched.
I was fortunate to have spent count-less hours in his office, receiving hiscounsel and advice and for that I will al-ways be grateful. He was a great listener, digested all of the facts and issues, andthen gave his opinion.
Let’s not forget his sense of humor, and his wit. He had the ability, the gift to make us laugh andto feel good even in times ofhis own personal strugglesand sorrow. Who can forgetsome of his humorous say-ings and I quote. “Before Istart my sermon I just wantto say a few words;” OR“I’m going to tell you atrue story that might haveactually happened;” OR“I officiated at your fa-ther’s bar mitzvah andI’m not going to com-pare BUT…” AND “Itis that time in the serv-ice where I have to re-mind you that thereis no saving of seats, and I mean it.”
Today remindsme of his sermons. We cry as wemourn the loss ofour Rabbi andour friend. Butwe also smile aswe remember his legacy hisdeeds and that twinkle in his eyes that re-minded us that better days are ahead.

10 I begin by noting thatRabbi Groner’s es-
teemed seat on thebimah has been pur-posefully left vacanttoday, and is flankedwith a shivah ribbonas we pay tribute tohis years of serviceto our beloved con-gregation.
And now, Ioffer the hallowedwords of the lateRabbi IrwinGroner:
“Dear God,We ask not tobe relieved ofour burdens, but to be for-tified to bearthem; we asknot for as p o n t a -neous solu-tion to ourproblems, but ratherfor theguidance
to meet them withfirmness and under-standing... You knowhow frail we are, howuncertain is our life. Our very existence isin Your hands. An-other year, and wegrow older alongwith it. Life be-comes more pre-cious as we sensetime’s rapid pass-ing. If only wecould grow inwisdom as wegrow inyears...Someof us haveknown glad-ness and ful-fi l l m e n t ,others haveknown sor-row andd i s a p -p o i n t -
ment. Some of our liveshave been touched my moments of high
ecstasy, andsome havebeen seared byunspeakab letragedy...Linkour nameswith prophetsand sages andsaints who la-bored to pre-
serve Your teaching. Enable us tocontinue their sacred work...We arehumbly and devoutly, Your children. And let us say: Amen.”
My friends, every series of blessings, prayers and utterances in the Jewishtradition ends with an entreaty forShalom, for peace and tranquility. As thehistoric Sages taught, and as RabbiGroner well understood, Shalom Rav.Great and precious is peace! While theword Rav indeed means “great,” it is alsothe title given to a Rabbi and Teacher. When I think of Rabbi Irwin Groner, hewas by all accounts not just a Rav, but aRav Rav, a truly great Rabbi and abeloved Teacher who possessed a keensense of integrity, dignity and mentch-lekeit, always living and modeling thevery same words that he preached fromthis very bimah week in and week out.
In reality, if anyone was meant to bea Rav from Bereshit, it was without adoubt Rabbi Irwin Groner who was bornto serve. It is no exaggeration to say thatit was in his blood to become one of thefinest and most well-respected Rabbinicleaders of our time. He was simply andclearly HaRav, the Rabbi, to countlessmembers of the congregation, and wellbeyond, as he embraced this role fully, completely and so very proudly. RabbiGroner taught us all how to live confi-dently as Jews and as human beings cre-ated in God’s image.
Sarah, as you explained, your babybrother was a serious student from thebeginning, and you marvelled at his bril-liance. You, your parents, the late Maxand the late Beatrice, and your siblings, the late Rabbi Benjamin, the late RabbiOscar, the late Julius, the late Mortonand the late Ruth, all knew intrinsicallythat your youngest brother was someonespecial and destined for greatness earlyon. He was exceptionally sharp, clever,fun-loving, and he possessed a deep wis-dom well beyond his youthful years.

11thought-of, in part because he was kind, compassionate and genuine, offering thatsame characteristic sincerity and authen-ticity to family, friend and stranger alike.
e tale of how Rabbi and Leypsamet is definitely worth telling, and I as-sure you, I got permission from Leypsafirst! As the story unfolds, Rabbi Gronerwas enrolled both at the University ofChicago, where he was pursuing a degreein psychology, and in Yeshiva at Hebreweoretical College. Well, Leypsa was at-tending Roosevelt University and heardabout a party in Spring 1953, that wasbeing given next door to her parents, aparty that the Rabbinical students weregoing to attend. Now all of the Ortho-dox girls were talking about this brilliantstudent named Irwin Groner whomLeypsa decided she just had to meet.
Leypsa, you met Rabbi and were in-stantly attracted to his personality. Andthe more you talked, the more youwanted to be with him. He was bright, attractive, charming, and you loved hissmile. You were so happy that he askedyou out again, and so you continued todate. en, in November 1953, Leypsa, you did the unthinkable! You took pub-lic transportation across town from theSouth side to the North side. But the un-thinkable part was that you marchedyourself into the men’s yeshiva, becauseyou wanted to have a little talk with theRabbi. Whatever you said clearlyworked, because by the end of the talk, you were engaged. You were married onJanuary 31, 1954 at your parents’ home inChicago, and for just short of sixdecades, you and the Rabbi have sharedunconditional love, support, respect, loy-alty, and you were without hesitationeach other's rock. Leypsa, you stood byRabbi’s side to the very end!
You were true partners who main-tained a deep commitment to one an-other and to your children, David andAmy, Joel and Debbie of blessed mem-ory. You always felt privileged and grate-ful to be Rabbi Groner’s wife, andamongst your most joyful experienceseach week was sitting and listening to theRabbi deliver a sermon. As it was foryou, it was truly an honor and a privilegefor each of us to listen to Rabbi Gronerartistically weave his thoughts and con-cepts together, thinking carefully beforehe spoke, and then speaking from hisheart as we listened intently.
We marveled at how his words werealways measured, well-chosen and in-
sightful, and invariably somehow theywould help us navigate the exact issues, concerns and challenges were facing atthat very moment. And we appreciatedthat he innately understood the depth ofthe human condition: our strengths, outweaknesses, our limitations, and ourtemptations.
Rabbi was also king of the one-liner,whose delivery of humor or a joke atexactly the right second, executed withperfect intonation was, and is, un-equaled. Rabbi’s incredible wit also al-lowed people to be put at ease whiledrawing them in, serving as a con-duit for contact with him on a verydeep and profound level.
Likewise, we could talk person-ally to Rabbi Groner and hewould just get it. You could neverask him a question that wouldn’telicit a meaningful answer. Andcountless religious leaders acrossdenominations and faiths sawthis too, and so they trustedhim and looked up to him. Imention in particular RabbiGroner’s very special relation-ship with Adam CardinalMaida as they were honoredtogether with the DoveAward. It should be notedthat Rabbi Groner alsomade an historic visit tothe Vatican just 20 yearsago.
Of course, anothercareer highlight forRabbi Groner wasbeing elected Presidentof the Rabbinical As-sembly, for in sodoing, not only didhe bring great honorto our shul, but anunprecedented 80-plus Shaarey Zedekmembers traveledto Concord in1990 to see RabbiGroner inductedinto the Presi-dency.
And now, aswe come to-gether in sad-ness this hourto reflect onour profound loss, I offer thetimeless words of our tradition as we sayContinues next page

12 Shalom Rav, Goodbye Rabbi. Shalom toa profoundly brilliant man who com-manded respect, and likewise receivedtremendous respect from everyone he en-countered.
We say Shalom Rav to a man who wasextremely real and all-embracing, whonaturally felt other peoples’ pain and joyas if it were his very own, and who nevertired of helping people to accept, to copeand to grow.
We say Shalom Rav to a man whoworked hard and set very high standardsfor himself.
We say Shalom Rav to a man whoshowed us by example how to follow ourhearts. at was the advice he gave mewhen I first came to Shaarey Zedek al-most 15 years ago when he sent me tomeet with a family who had just losttheir baby. Rabbi explained to me thatthere are no words to mitigate their pain.He said, just be fully present with thefamily and do what feels right. It was the
best rabbinic advice I could ever haveasked for at the time, and words that Icontinue to hold dear. It was a tremen-dous honor to learn from Rabbi Groner. He was my teacher, and we will neverforget how his door was always open, aswas his heart and his soul.
And so this hour we say Shalom Ravto a man whose presence was larger thanlife itself. We say Shalom Rabbi, Shalomto our esteemed Rav Rav, our wonderfulRabbi, and our honored teacher, as henow assumes his rightful place in theOlam HaBah, the World to Come.Rabbi, we will never forget your impact, your influence, your inspiration, andyour unconditional love. Shalom Rav,rest in peace Rabbi Groner. HaRav Mor-einu Yizchak ben Matityahu, and knowyour precious and cherished memory willbe an abundant blessing from heaven, this day and forevermore. Kein Yehi Rat-zon. So may it be the Almighty’s will. And let us say: Amen.

My father was the son of Max andBeatrice Groner, the youngest of sevenchildren. Now only his sister Sarah is stillalive. Aunt Sarah told me my father wasso smart and so sweet, even as a youngchild. Clearly, his love oflearning reaches way back to his childhood.
When he was graduated fromrabbinical school in Chicago, he movedto Little Rock, Arkansas where he servedas the rabbi at a small shul, until comingto Shaarey Zedek as I already mentionedin 1959. 13those dark hours, with strong leadershipand words of comfort and prayer.
You see that was my father. Being arabbi was his calling. He loved being arabbi, and he loved this congregation.at’s why we all feel a great sense of losstoday. My dad played an important partin so many of our lives spanning multiplegenerations. Whether it was a happy orsad occasion my dad was always there forus. He considered the entire ShaareyZedek family as his own.
Over the years so many of you havetold me how much they miss RabbiGroner and his words, that no one gavea sermon like Rabbi Groner. Whetherdelivered in written form or from thebimah, his mastery of prose captivatedhis audience with eloquence, articulation, and profound insight, which resonatedwith his message of faith and God.
My father was driven by his humanityand his belief, and his sermons conveyedthat. Often they were a call to action, tobe a better Jew, to be a better humanbeing. His words carried conviction andpersuasion. Sometimes they challengedour beliefs about ourselves, but they al-ways taught, comforted, and guided us.
Although my dad’s, Irwin’s, RabbiGroner’s, voice and presence will bemissed, we are grateful for the years hewas granted, for the devotion he showedto our family, for the love and respect hegave and received, and for the wisdom heimparted to all whom he touched. Wewill honor his spirit and message by liv-ing the virtues and spreading his com-passion to those around us.
We meant the world to my father, and he meant the world to us – his fam-ily – and while these last years have beenso difficult for him, we remember himnow in his stronger days, standing here, addressing the congregation, doing whathe loved most: being a rabbi, and, moreimportantly, being the rabbi here.
William Shakespeare wrote inHamlet (Act II, scene ii):
What a piece of work is a man! hownoble in reason!how infinite in faculty! in form andmoving how express and admirable!in action how like an angel!in apprehension how like a god! thebeauty of the world! the paragon ofanimals!
Yet, it is so utterly frustrating thathowever infinite in faculty humans are,we still have a difficult time dealing with
death. We try to reason with it, excuse it,justify it, fear it, and curse it, perhaps be-cause it is something we cannot compre-hend and we cannot control. It leaves usstanding in awe of God’s power, and re-minds us that we have to accept his judg-ment and his plan, even though wecannot possibly understand it. When wemourners begin the ritual of recitingkaddish – a sanctification of God’s namesaid in memory of a deceased relative –we never mention death or the deceased. We emphasize the grandeur and glory ofGod as we try to come to terms with theunfathomable. It offers us comfort andreassurance in a world suddenly turnedtopsy-turvy.
My father appreciated Shakespeare’sworks, so let me quote another one. Atthe end of Julius Caesar, Brutus was de-scribed as one whose
“...life was gentle, and the elementsSo mix’d in him that Nature mightstand upAnd say to all the world ‘is was aman!’”
Julius Caesar, Act V, scene v(emphasis supplied)
at same de-scription could besaid of my father. His life was gentle, and he had so manyelements to him, somany interests, somany fields ofknowledge thatappealed to him, that “Naturemight stand upand say to allthe world ‘iswas a man!’”My familyand I wouldc e r t a i n l yagree: iswas a man!He taughtus so muchabout life, and nowhe hastaught usa b o u tdeath. 14 and now we all join to mourn hispassing.
While my father certainly appre-ciated Shakespeare, his life was ded-icated to his family and to his role asa rabbi. So, perhaps a better way ofdefining “the man” can be found inJewish literary sources. In fact, it’sone of the many bits of wisdomfrom my father, and he included itin a sermon or two. e Talmud re-lates (and I’m going to say it in He-brew so you can hear the assonanceof the words, the beauty of how theyflow together) that:
רמא בר :יעליאAmar Rav Ila’i -- Rabbi Ila’i said
השולשב םירבד םדא :רכינ
Bishloshah d’varim adam nikkar— A man is known by three things
וסוכב וסיכב וסעכבוB’koso, u’vkiso, uv’ka’aso -- By his
cup, his pocket, and his anger.(Eruvin 65b)
I can almost hear my fatherquoting this passage.
A man is known by three things:koso, kiso, and ka’aso – by his cup, byhis pocket, and by his anger.
B’koso – by his cup: Was he hos-pitable to others? Was he available tohis flock? Was he warm? Affable?Did he emulate God by providingfood to the hungry? Did he drink toexcess? Could he be trusted?
My father was all of this. He wasa trusted advisor to so many. Hisdoor was always open to all whowere in need. He was an excellentconversationalist with a commandof so many subject areas that itseemed to me that he could speakauthoritatively on almost any topic. And yet he was so humble youwouldn’t have known that he could.
B’kiso – by his pocket. What didhe do with his money? Did he spendit wisely? Did he spend it on others?Did he support charitable institu-tions? Was he kind and generous?Did he have to be asked twice to do-nate to help others? Did he have tobe asked at all?
My father was generous witheverything that he had. He spent his
life trying to improve the lot of oth-ers, and there was no limit to howhe would do so.
B’ka’aso – by his anger. Whatmade him angry? What riled himup? Was he easily appeased? Did hebear a grudge? What could rile aperson up to get him motivatedenough to take action to right awrong, or to fix an injustice?
My father was a crusader fortruth, and he was motivated by aBiblical sense of social justice. Hewanted to help make the world abetter place for everyone, and hewanted to make it more user-friendly for Jews. He also helpedmake Judaism more user-friendly forhis congregation and for so manyothers. He edited an updated ver-sion of the High Holiday prayerbook and Chumash – the Five Booksof Moses – bringing old ideas up todate in clear, modern language, making the religion of our ancestorsavailable and relevant to peopletoday. at High Holiday prayerbook and that Chumash are in wide-spread use in synagogues through-out North America.
And, if I may be so bold, I wouldlike to add a fourth “k” to the three“k-words” the rabbis proposed. Iwould add: “b’kis’o,” by his chair. What position did he occupy, andhow did he relate to it? Was he hum-ble? Modest? Did he use his positionfor one of personal gain? Did he re-spect others? Did others respect him?
I think this is an area where hisnature truly shined. He was modestand humble to a fault. As the Wiz-ard of Oz said to the Tin Man, “Aheart is not measured by how muchit loves, but by how much it is lovedby others.” And my father wasbeloved by so many, as your pres-ence here today attests. My father’scivility, humility, and optimismtouched everyone he met. And be-cause of this, he was able to tran-scend ideological boundaries withother faiths and other communityleaders, to strengthen the kinship ofmankind.
Even years after his retirement, that spark never left him, and peoplestill looked up to my father with theutmost reverence and respect. Hewas a moral authority in the com-munity whose legacy lives on. He
never held a grudge, never had amean word to say about anyone, andhe was always concerned about thepeople in his life.
ere is a saying that God nevertests an individual with more thantheir character can handle. If this isthe case, then my father’s characterand commitment was champion.Even in the face of personal suffer-ing and the difficulty he faced withthe progression of his disease, dadwas never bitter, was never cynical, and never lost the commitment ofhis calling. His love, devotion, andfaith never wavered. He was neverangry with God.
Modern medicine – with God’shelp – can perform miracles. But noone lives forever, and my father’stime on Earth has now come to anend. rough every procedure andtest and probing, my father alwayssaid he wasn’t in pain. We hope thatthat was true and not just his beingstoic to protect us. His staunch de-termination to continue living was atribute to his love of his family, life, and God. But no matter how hardhe fought, life and death are mattersthat lie in God’s hands, and God,whose reasons are unknowable to us,decided that my father’s time hadcome. My father would have cer-tainly accepted that decision, nomatter how much he would want tostay, and now we – his survivingfamily members, his congregation, and all who loved him, must acceptGod’s judgment as well.
We would like to thank Dr. Her-shel Sandberg for the many years ofcare he provided my father as hispersonal physician. We are also sothankful to the medical staff atBeaumont Hospital, and we want tooffer a public acknowledgement andpersonal thank you to Dr. SandySchochet, who led my father’s out-standing medical team with profes-sionalism and compassion. I alsowant to take a moment to thank mydad’s caregiver, Marek Stepniak whotook care of my father with a kind-ness, respect, and reverence that willnever be forgotten. You all actedwith the utmost dignity and respectin caring for my father.
Yes, this was a man. He was agreat father, a great husband, a greatleader, and a great rabbi. He will be

together with our beloved Debbie, whose soul God called home aftertoo short a time on Earth. Now fa-ther and daughter are re-united, andwith that knowledge we can bidfarewell to my father, Rabbi IrwinGroner. e end has come. God hascalled Rabbi Groner to the olamha’emet, to the world of truth, theworld of eternity, the world of peace. My dad is at peace.

What haPPeNs aFteR We die? aNsWeRs, (MoRe) questioNs, aNd discussioNWith Rabbi Aaron Starrursdays, March 7, 14, April 4, 11, 18, 25, May 2, 911:15 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
ere is no question more central to life, perhaps, than what happens when it ends. Many grewup learning little to nothing about what Judaism teaches regarding the afterlife. Why? What doesJudaism teach about Heaven and Hell; the nature of the soul; bodily resurrection, the messianicera, communing with the dead; the importance to the deceased of kaddish; and why are manyliberal Jews—even rabbis—afraid to discuss it?
