4 Everybody Wins When WeSeek to be Inclusive
Rabbi Joseph H. Krakoff • [email protected] me on Twitter: @rabbikrakoff
Week in and week out, we tune into reality televisionshows in order to see who goes on to the next roundand who gets eliminated and sent home. In the world of
RealityTelevision, someone must win, while many more have to lose!If you think about it, Reality Television thrives on one
major concept: separation and elimination. In essence, tellingpeople they are not good enough, smart enough or even capableenough. But much more than that, these programs reflect thevery narrow and limited way we tend to view the world aroundus: namely…who’s in and who’s out.
Stephen Covey in his International Bestseller, e 7 HighlyEffective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change, reflects onthe depth to which society has taught us to think of the worldin the stark terms of winners and losers. Covey explains that inthe realm of human interaction we focus largely on majordichotomies: winners and losers, strong or weak, large or small. But one person’s success does not have to be achieved or gainedat the expense or exclusion of the success of others.
is destructive “who’s in and who’s out” paradigm isinternalized by most of us as youngsters and is often reinforcedsubconsciously at home, at work, and throughout society as awhole. e “if I win, you lose” approach manifests itself withinour families each time one sibling is compared with another(think: Cain and Abel, Jacob and Esau, Joseph and his brothers)and ultimately when patience, understanding or love is given ortaken away on the basis of these painful comparisons.
Covey cites several examples of how we come to embodythis “either/or” “win or lose” mentality on a profound level. Weincorrectly think, “If I’m better than my brother, my parentswill love me more,” or we come to believe that “My parentsdon’t love me as much as they love my sister so I must not beas valuable.” And so, we learn to perpetuate the mistaken factthat somebody must win, someone else must lose…and thelosers are left behind. But it doesn’t have to be that way!
As is seen in our current reading of the Book of Exodus,Moses displays perhaps his greatest leadership moment whenhe is called by God, along with his brother Aaron, to lead theIsraelite people out of slavery in Egypt. After the first sevenplagues have gotten the attention of both the Egyptians andthe Israelites, Moses returns to Pharaoh following the seventhplague of hail, and begs the Egyptian leader to make just oneconcession: to permit the Israelites to go forth just to celebratethe Lord’s festival. Surprisingly, Moses’ request is not for completeliberation but for a vacation day from building the pyramids,in order to worship the Almighty.
At this point, even Pharaoh’s courtiers plead with theirleader to grant this small request, and almost miraculously,Pharaoh seems to soften and asks Moses: “Who are the onesyou will take with you?”
Moses responds without hesitation: “We will all go, youngand old, our sons and our daughters, our flocks and our herds;for we must all observe the Lord’s holy day.” But Pharaoh won’thave it. He concedes that he will allow only the men to go worshipthe Lord, but no one else.
Presented with a terrible dilemma–to leave the women andchildren behind–Moses takes a mighty risk to be inclusive.Although he might never get the opportunity for freedomagain, in an incredible show of leadership, Moses opts to remainwith all the Israelites in Egypt and forgo the celebratory festival. In Moses’ mind, there can be no winners or losers, there is no“either/or.” Everybody must be included in the liberation andno one can remain behind. ey will be victorious as a people,or they will all go down together.
What we learn here is that one major difference between agood leader and a great one is the ability to know when acompromise is inappropriate, and Moses clearly gets it. We canappreciate from examples in our own lives how hard it musthave been for Moses, given a window toward freedom for onlya portion of his people, to instead stand up for keeping thepeople united. Moses teaches us that just like a community thatcannot make room for everyone is no community at all, so too aJudaism that cannot make room for all Jews is no Judaism at all.
I imagine that if we are honest with ourselves, we recognizethat we have all been guilty at times of shutting others out, ofleaving them behind, and of seeing ourselves as winners andothers as losers. Sadly, when we do this we close ourselves off, forming all types of cliques and arbitrarily deciding that no oneelse is welcome to enter our “inner circle.” But Moses remindsus that Jewish moral behavior requires us to reach out, to be in-clusive and to cast our nets wider. For once we begin to changethe way we approach the world, we will see more clearly thatthere is more room than we ever imagined for multiple winnersin every situation.
As we approach the upcoming holiday of Purim, a festivalfilled with sheer joy and jubilant celebration, may we come tofully recognize that by approaching one another in the spirit ofinclusion, we tap into the power with which Mordecai and Es-ther united the Jewish people, a power that ultimately led to thedefeat and demise of the evil Haman. And that, I believe, is thesecret of Purim… revealed! Chag Purim Sameach!

12 One Small Jewish Step for Man.One Giant Leap for Humankind.
Rabbi Aaron L. Starr • [email protected] me on Twitter: @rabbistarr
Director of Education and Youth
One small step for man. one giant leap for mankind,”remarked astronaut Neil Armstrong on July 20,1969, as he became the first person to step foot on
the moon. While Armstrong passed away this past August, hiswords—and even more so, his actions—will be rememberedas a pivotal moment in the history of space exploration. esmall step of an individual, based on the great work of a nation, did indeed transform the entire world.
Judaism, I believe, is no different. ere is a tradition thatthe messiah will come when everybody (God willing), on oneFriday night, lights Shabbat candles. Similarly, the tradition goes, the messiah will come when (God forbid) no one lights Shabbatcandles on a given Friday night. e collective action of indi-vidual households maintains the power to transform the world.
Imagine, then, if every person in our synagogue took onesmall step in his/her own personal Jewish journey. Wouldn’tthose steps, too, become a giant leap for mankind? In a shul ofour size, our collective steps would lead to hundreds of livestouched through volunteerism–at senior centers and homelessshelters, at food pantries and homes for those with specialneeds; through a deeper devotion to God–through greater at-tendance at prayer services and educational opportunities aswell as increased celebration of Shabbat in the home or givingof tzedakah throughout the community. our collective stepswould strengthen Israel and the united States’ efforts to supportthe Holy Land. our Jewish steps would engage the old and inspirethe young, transforming our individual Jewish lives, ShaareyZedek’s communal experience, and truly, transform the world.one small step for a man or woman leads to one giant leap forhumankind.
So, in these dark months of January and February, let mechallenge you to bring light by ascending the ladder of Jewishness.Let me challenge you to take upon yourself or your family aCovenant, a sacred contract to engage in just one (or two) stepsin your Jewish journey. And, let me challenge you to call RabbiKrakoff or me to assist you on your Jewish journey. Whetheryour steps be communal or private, ritual, educational orTikkun Olam, let me challenge you—all you need is one. Andwho knows, together, our steps might mean a giant leap forhumankind.

For nearly 50 years, the Torah Fund campaign ofWomen’s League for Conservative Judaism has providedfinancial aid for students, and vital support for e Jewisheological Seminary of America’s residences, campus andlibrary.
Torah Fund donors receive a beautiful pin in apprecia-tion of their support of the Seminary. Contributions beginat the $180 Benefactors level.
Sisterhood would like to publicly thank Anna and yaleLevin for their incredible hospitality, and the Torah FundChairs, Cookie Lachover and Debby Rosen, who workedso hard to make this program such a success. Rabbi Krakoffand Rabbi Starr offered delightful, sincere answers to ourquestions, giving us additional insight into their lives. Many laughs were had as we all enjoyed this special after-noon with our Rabbis.
