HEY NEACURH!

My name is Jilly Cole, your Regional Communications Coordinator for Publications.

This year, I wanted to expand the Publications position and I thought to myself… what is the

Monthly Moose Callings missing? Then it took me about a second, and RECOGNITION hit me.

I believe our organization revolves around recognition; from OTM’s, to bidding for awards, shining stars at conferences and so much more. We

thrive on being recognized, so here is your chance NEACURH, and recognize each month.

I want to first and foremost explain how “The Recognition Express” was inspired. At Marty Bash, Mary, your NEACURH Regional

Advisor said “come on, toot your horn” and someone went “chuu chuu!” I don’t remember the context and or why it was even said, but it

inspired the theme of this whole publication. I figured you can all “toot each others horns” and your own of course.

Recognition has inspired a lot of people to impact their school’s and themselves. An OTM is what inspired my school’s NRHH Chapter,

and is what continues to strengthen our organization. I know this is a similar situations to most of you reading this too. So, I want to share with

you all how recognition within NEACURH has changed my life. I presented a sexual assault program that was an emotional rollercoaster for me

but after the program, I saw a positive impact within my living community. Then, at Regionals 2011, I bid for the RBD and didn’t get it. I was

heartbroken until my NCC told me, my Hall Director wrote a regional winning OTM. Then I realized, she wrote it on my program. It was the

highlight of the conference and my semester. The recognition and support that is infused in every OTM gave me the momentum to reinvent my

RHA and gave me the confidence to re-bid for the RBD.

So, why did I share this with you all… to inspire greatness through this publication. This is a great way to say to someone “you rock” or

to show someone that we see the great work they’re doing. You could change someone’s life with a simple submission. That life changing event

could be from someone attending their RHA/NRHH meeting on a regular basis, to applying for a conference, to bidding for an award or just

making them feel special.

You can make a difference… so recognize this great opportunity and enjoy your voyage on

Kevin Filchak Oh man! Kevin has been working

tirelessly over the past few months to plan and execute the BEST REGIONAL

CONFERENCE EVER! He has been doing such an amazing job and always has a smile on this face. I cannot wait to see all that he and the conference staff do

this year and all that they achieve together. Thank you for everything you

have done thus far and everything you are going to do.

Zena, you have come up

with fun, exciting and innovated ideas for

Entertainment/activities for

Regionals. I am so excited for "stuff a moose" and i know

Kimberley Panther and UConn's NRHH Chapter

Philanthropy initiatives are not the easiest things to coordinate, but their impact can be HUGE!!! Kimberley Panther has been hard at work getting everything set and

ready for the Regional's 2011 Philanthropy projects (Make a Wish

Foundation and CareWare) and has been doing a great job so far! I can't wait to

see everything Kimberley and the UConn NRHH Chapter accomplish for these

amazing organizations!

Gudrun You are an awesome advisor and leading a

great team. You exude kindness and positivity and that radiates with your students. The support you show to the

conference staff is amazing and keep up the great work. :)

Amy Holland One of the best things about conferences are the programs that you each get to explore and conquer. It takes confidence to put on a program, no matter how small or large it is. But one of the scariest? Putting together all the programs for the conference. Amy Holland has been doing just that. She has been doing amazing in EVERY aspect. Step by step she is

taking caution, to make sure it is all perfect for you all. She is a first time NEACURH experiencer, but you would never be able to tell. Amy, you

So as everyone throughout the region is sending in their registration forms on the amazing survey money form to UCONN for Regionals, 2 very

important, and phenomenal people are receiving them on the other end and making sure everything is going moosetastic. When my host school hosted SUBs last spring, I was going out of my mind trying to get ready,

and now that I think back on the experience and think about what Ashley and Vera are doing, I can't even imagine how they are keeping everything together...but the thing is, the are keeping it together. They are working to

get everyone registered and signed up for their amazing conference and making sure that there are no missing parts. If you

get a chance, think of someone who is making a difference and working their hardest but may no be getting recognized, and .

I would like to recognize our Vice President, Nick Chen, for doing an A-Moosing job of organizing our Leadership

Conference! This is where we train our hall council members in their elected positions, tell them all about our organization

along with our sister organization, NRHH, and provide leadership programs. Nick asked our professional staff to

present leadership programs, ordered food/handbooks, wrote descriptions of ice breakers, and so much more. Our

conference would not have been the same without all his hard work and dedication. Thank you Nick Chen!

I would also like to give a shout-out to Kevin Friedman, our

ADAF, for being our keynote speaker and attending the rest of our conference. R-O-C-K, you rock, you rock!

discussed new ideas to bring to both organizations. Each of us bonded, learned from each other, and

pushed each other to achieve their goals. I know I couldn't have done the high ropes course without

For amazing work in organizing a successful Annual Block Party,

over 400 attendees!

Kevin Conn It makes me sad to see our advisor, Kevin Conn, leave his role as RHA Advisor. While I am happy that he was promoted to the position of Quad Director, and while I know that the

new advisor is going to be awesome as well, I am still bummed out. Kevin, as an individual, is an over achiever--similar to many other NEACURH lovers. In addition to being the Residence Hall Director (RHD) of Yang Hall, Kevin served as the RHA Advisor, participated in various on

campus committees, spearheaded a new educational program (the Excel program) and just went above and beyond in general. He has been RHA's advisor for over two years now and as an

undergraduate, I know that he participated in RHA for over three years, if not more.

I love Kevin Conn and I appreciate everything he does for us and everything he does for me. He always gives me good advice during our 1 on 1's and he makes me laugh as well. When I most needed his encouragement, he was there for me. Last year, around the time of RHA elections, the position of NCC was still open. I had wanted to run, but I was being hesitant for two reasons: I had not participated in RHA for a year (I

was part of the NRHH E-board as well as another E-board, so I did not have as much time) and I was stressed out due to my current commitments. It was during this time that, in

spite of being at a conference, Kevin spoke to me. He told me that I'd do a great job as NCC; he believed in me and he

would help me in planning for nationals, because he knew I still had to do a lot of work transitioning my successors in my two other organizations. I love being NCC, and without him, I wouldn't be where I am today. Several other important in-dividuals in my life encouraged me as well, but Kevin was one of the key ones. I am going to miss having Kevin as our advisor, but he's not gone yet--he'll be transition our new

advisor until December, and he'll be coming with us to Regionals :)

Julie Rizzolo You are doing a

phenomenal job leading the RBD team. With

your leadership, we are an unstoppable force!!

Peter Sheh, Stony Brook’s RHA Treasurer For all his efforts with

the new budget given to RHA from the Stony

Brook Undergraduate Student Government. Peter designed an all

new allocation system, created all documents

needed, and has organized all forms a

building’s Hall Council needs to allocate.

In the life of any student leader, one understands that the commitment of the student lies to both the academic field and to any organizations that he/she is involved in. Although we might only work towards a common goal, it is important to recognize the professional and personal friendships we build up over time. One concept that I have learned quickly as a first-year Executive Board member is the concept of family. It may be deemed ironic since living on campus; it is often a personal struggle to visit family who live two hours away. But, as everyone knows, sometimes the times get tough. Yet, it is always comforting to know you have someone from your organization to be able to support you. It can often be a concept that is overlooked, but its importance is immeasurable. No matter how frustrated or tense a moment can get, it is always meaningful when people can still respect you outside of the professional setting. So, in my eyes, being in the Residence Hall Association of Western New England is more than just work. When you visualize it, it is almost like a puzzle. Everyone is a different puzzle piece, in which we are all different in size, shape and color. It takes organizing and a little bit if time, but when all of the pieces are combined, that’s when the true masterpiece occurs. It could be as simple as asking someone how their day went, or sharing a meal together. It helps to strengthen your personal friendships, and it allows for the professional relationship to be built upon a foundation of trust and respect.

Being the Chair of Recruitment and Retention, I know the feeling of trying to “market” our organization to incoming freshman who are excited to get involved on campus. As

everyone displays their events and goals, the ability to offer more to those students really hits home. This year, I offered the prospective students an opportunity to grow into a student

l. leader, and a chance to become part of a family that never stops growing. I think that’s why RHA is an organization that makes an impact on our campus, although

sometimes unseen, and allows growth for the individual and for the organization as a whole.

Sara Koppenhaver You brought a smile to my face when I needed it most,

by giving me a Moose Crossing washcloth. You’re doing an amazing job as NRHH President and being so

Jessica Garcia has been an outstanding NCC for Salem State University in every aspect of her position. She has brought her new “co” up to speed, held interviews for Regionals 2011, and is prepping her delegation

Brian Dubenion The RHA Executive Board at Buffalo State College wants to recognize you because you’re an extraordinary Residence

Hall Association advisor. He’s been with the organization for three years and has worked tirelessly with each of the

executive boards to empower us and to make us effective leaders on the Buffalo State Campus. We interviewed Brian (reluctantly of course) and asked him about how he feels

about RHA and his role as an Advisor.

“I’ve been working as an Advisor for RHA for about 3 years now.” He began. “I like supporting the residential students

on campus. Part of the goal as an Advisor is to help the Executive Board become exceptional leaders on campus and

to make sure that their hard work is recognized both regionally and nationally. My favorite part of RHA is Moose Love and working with student leaders on campus. I want to

see RHA continue to collaborate with RA’s and

build community at Buffalo State.”

Here at Western New England University, the Residence Hall Association (RHA) and the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) strove to spread the love of our organizations to our

campus community. Every year, the Student Activities and Leadership Development Office holds a Student Activities Expo in Rivers Arena, a large venue area on our campus. This event had

tables lined up around the room – resembling a college fair but for extracurricular activities! RHA and NRHH shared a table to

advertise the amazing things both our organizations do for the campus. To entice students, one of our executive board members wore a Grilled Cheese costume. Why a grilled cheese costume?

Great question! At Western New England University, one big tradition for RHA is selling grilled cheese sandwiches during finals

week but the only complaint we get is that we sell them for only two days per semester. So, RHA and NRHH decided to surprise the

campus with a one night, limited time special of grilled cheese sandwiches handed out during the Student Activities Expo. This

was a great idea and really attracted students to our table. We had more sign ups and got more interest from students by explaining

to them why we have a grilled cheese costume, what we do on campus and the impact they can make by being a part of either

RHA or NRHH. Needless to say, our cheesy tactics have really . melted the hearts of first year students and other

student leaders at the Expo. I cannot wait to see the breadwinning ideas RHA has to offer this year at Western New England University!

as a chapter. Even though our NRHH executive

board consists of very involved student leaders,

she has still made time to keep close contact with

helping the e-board get ready for the November conference, as well as

doing a great job informing the new RHA General Body members about what conference

means and how they can apply

to go.

The Residence Hall Association of Western New England University is doing such a great job in their fall semester. They started off with their traditional RHA BINGO NIGHT it was a success, with teamwork everything turns out good. This organization definitely stands out because one can see that they are a unique group who work together well, they help each other out and seem to be well known around their campus. Last year

their programs turned out to be a success of which many students seemed to attend and most importantly enjoy. They have many more programs coming up this year hopefully

they turn out to be as successful as last year if not better, we have yet to see. The Residence Hall Association of Western New England University doesn’t seem to

disappoint, if they continue with the great teamwork and high energy no doubt will they be successful this school year.

I would like to recognize Jennifer Maurer and Jonathan Frefeld from SUNY New Paltz for putting together an awesome subs proposal! I know I, as well as the rest of New York can say that we are SUPER excited to have the opportunity to attend subs at New Paltz and they are doing a phenomenal job being the subs hosts! NEACURH Regional OTM Voting Committee How ironic is it that we are recognizing a recognition committee? In many organizations and in everyday life,

people who are the ones doing the recognition seldomly get recognized themselves. The NEACURH Regional OTM Voting Committee has been up and running since July and has spent countless hours

reading and voting on our "Of The Month" awards to give submissions the title of Regional OTM Winner and the chance to be sent along to the NACURH OTM Voting Committee. With 28 people on the committee repre-senting 17 member schools, RHA's, NRHH's, Advisor's, and Alumni, we have had great conversations on how to

improve NEACURH OTM's and get the word out so more people across the region can be recognized. I could not ask for a better group of individuals to be part of my committee and I think they all deserve a

bunch of snaps %!%!%!%!%!%!%!%!%!% for their amazing work so far! Thank you:

Kyle Shea Not only is he good looking, he has a great passion for

everything he does. Right off the bat during RA training he came up to me energized about this upcoming year

and NEACURH. Dedicated to getting ourselves involved more, Kyle has really expressed his moose love to both

RHA and NRHH. Although things didn't work out in our favor this past month, instead of just giving up, Kyle

pushed me and everyone else to keep on going. I can't wait to continue working with this muffin this year! He is going to be a great Programming Chair for RHA this
