*In late September, John and JoAnn Natuik took

advantage of a trip to Utah for a friend’s wedding, to

enjoy some of what the West has to offer. After flying out

to Salt Lake City, they rented a car and traveled to Grand

Canyon country for a few days. John writes that Sedona

had spectacular scenery with towers of red rock and

amazing sunsets.

*Although she did not make the Top 40 we want to

congratulate Jessica Drakul for her October nomination to

CBC’s Manitoba Future 40 which recognizes people

under 40 making a big impact on their community.

*Gord Clifford and son Sean made the most of their

weekend visit to Vancouver in October. “Greg and

Mayumi were great hosts and kept us very busy”, writes

Gord. “We visited Granville Island and the waterfront

area and later went to the Jets game with about two

thousand other Jets fans. Friday we went up to Grouse

Mountain, trekked the Capilano suspension bridge and

drove up the sea to sky highway. On the way back we

stopped for dinner at the Salmon House on The Hill

Restaurant; the view of Vancouver skyline and the

Burrard Inlet was amazing. Saturday was a trip to the

Vancouver Aquarium, a local farmers’ market with a wine

tasting stop at a local BC VQA wine store.”

* Remember The Beachcombers from Sunday evening

TV? Greg Clifford reported that he had many memories of

that series when he and & Mayumi visited Molly’s Reach

at Gibson’s Landing on October 26.

*Jason & Jennifer King headed to Phoenix and Las Vegas

in early November to watch the Jets games with some

friends. The few days’ of rest and relaxation at their

Scottsdale condo following those games was very

enjoyable, and a nice break from the Christmas chaos.

-Jennifer reported that new pets, Jimmie and Jax, enjoyed

their first Christmas. “They were spoiled and it was fun

watching them sniff out all their toys and treats. Puppies

really are the best!”

-Jada has landed her first job; she works part time at

Mountain Bean. She must be thrilled to be earning her

own money now!

*Janet Taylor enjoyed a week’s vacation in warm and

sunny Puerto Vallarta in late November. Lovely way to

celebrate a birthday.

* Steve and Jerrie Hanchuk had an extra special Christmas

when Steve's daughter, Teri Hanchuk, came to Winnipeg

from Kelwona, B.C. for a few days over the holidays.

*Jane MacKenzie’s one year term as a member of the

University of Manitoba Board of Governors will be up

next month. She was appointed to the Board last February.

The 23 member Board meets seven times a year and is

responsible for overseeing the administrative and business

affairs of the University, including approving the annual

budget as well as appointing and monitoring the

performance of the President and Vice-Chancellor.

There are other committees on which Jane has been asked

to sit but, as a teacher who works in rural Manitoba, she

cannot take the extra time that those positions & meetings

would require. That is one reason she will probably not

extend her time on the Board; she feels she is not able to

participate as fully as other members.

*Judy Oryniak happily invited the Keogan pets, guinea

pigs Penny & Charley, to come stay with her and Ken for

a short visit. Carla, Glen, Maggie and Patrick went to

Cuba for a post-Christmas week in the sun!

-Looking after the pets will take time away from Judy’s

newest interest – having fun learning how to use all the

bells and whistles on her new iPhone.

*Marj Paonessa traveled to Las Vegas for a few days in

late October to celebrate a friend’s wedding. Haven’t

heard whether she got to see the Golden Knights play

hockey…maybe she just soaked up the sun around the

pool!

-Back in BC plans were to try and move through the

HourGlass Studio inventory and start to think about

downsizing the business. Marj would like to slow down a

bit, and use her time and energy for other things.

*How to reap rewards of a good deed: When sister Linda

Johnson couldn’t attend the Corpus Christi Bud, Spud &

Steak fundraiser in November, Theresa agreed to purchase

tickets for her for the Silent Auction prizes…and Linda

was a lucky winner! A month later, Theresa Restall

cashed in big time when she won 5 of the silent auction

prizes at her ladies' curling league wind-up. From wine to

chocolates to house wares ....she got a potpourri of prizes.

Maybe her luck will spill over into the new year with a

lottery ticket!!

*Howie and Theresa went to Minneapolis for 5 days after

Christmas, taking in a Chicago Bears vs. Minnesota

Vikings football game on New Year's Eve. On their way

home Theresa found a 90% off Christmas decoration sale

and yes, she made a few purchases!!

*Long-time Birds Hill resident and World War II veteran,

Edward Charles Bray passed away on December 21, 2017

at the age of 98. May he rest in peace.

St. Valentine’s Day

Valentine was a Roman priest in the 3rd century ruled by

an emperor called Claudius, who persecuted the church

at that particular time. Claudius put forth an edict that

prohibited the marriage of young people, based on the

hypothesis that unmarried soldiers fought - in war -better

than married soldiers because the latter might be afraid

of what might happen to them or their wives or families

if they died. The idea of encouraging them to marry

within the Christian church was what Valentine was

about. He married them secretly, because of the edict,

and was eventually caught. In the year 269 AD,

Valentine was sentenced to a three part execution:

beating, stoning, and finally decapitation.

The story goes that the last words he wrote were in a

note to a senator’s daughter whom he had cured of

blindness. He inspired today's romantic missives by

signing the note, "from your Valentine."

…submitted by Phillip Natuik, courtesy of the Internet

So there you have it folks! Times have indeed changed. So

whatever your age, go for it - NO edicts here! Smile, hug, or kiss someone dear to you. Money can’t buy love, but flowers and chocolates help.

Even doing the dishes or opening a door will mark Feb. 14. The list is endless - just do it! Remember, the

gift is gender-neutral; and love is to give and to receive. /pn

*Linda Johnson wants to advise people to slow down when an

emergency vehicle (ambulance, fire truck, police car) is pulled

over with its lights flashing. The Highway Traffic Act

stipulates a maximum speed of 60 kmh. (think construction).

The fine for speeding past is $300 with 2 demerits on your

driver’s license. The officer with whom she spoke gave her a

stern lecture and asked her to spread the word. Here it is.

VALENTINE SONGS -read as poems or sung as songs-

My Funny Valentine- Rodgers and Hart

(1937 from Babes in Arms) My funny valentine,

Sweet comic valentine, You make me smile with my heart, you look so laughable, unphotographable,

Yet you’re my favorite work of art Is your figure Greek? Is your mouth a little weak?

When you open it to speak, are you smart? But don’t change a hair for me, not if you care for me,

Stay little valentine, stay, Each day is Valentine’s Day.

My Valentine - Paul McCartney 2012 What if it rained? We didn’t care

She said that someday soon the sun was gonna shine,

And she was right, this love of mine, my valentine. As days and nights would pass me by, I tell myself that I was waiting for a sign,

Then she appeared, A love so fine My valentine.

And I will love her, for life And I will never let a day go by without remembering the

reasons why, She makes me certain that I can fly! And so I do, without a care,

I know that someday soon The sun is gonna shine, And she’ll be there

This love of mine My valentine.

*From the great time they had, we wouldn’t be surprised

if Gord & Sean Clifford make the Jets at Vancouver an

annual event.

*Congratulations to Mayumi Motouchi on her personal

best time in the Victoria Marathon on Thanksgiving

weekend.

*Cousins Ray Natuik (Goderich) and Judy Oryniak

(London) were happy to see each other and had a nice chat

in between games at the Master Men’s and Women’s

Curling Qualifier in Walkerton, ON. Unfortunately, their

teams were not successful in advancing to the provincial

championships in January. The cousins are hoping to

connect this coming year at each other’s homes.

*Judy & Ken are looking forward to seeing some family

members in January. Sister Theresa Restall will be

attending the Continental Cup with Minneapolis friends

whose daughter will be curling on the US women’s team.

-And nephew Trevor Rebeck will be in the stands when

son, Curtis, plays in a hockey tournament in Sarnia from

January 11-15. The Oryniaks and Keogans will visit with

him when they go to Curtis’s games.

*Dylan Schindle (age 7) has taken up curling at East St.

Paul curling club and is enjoying it immensely.

*On December 9th

, Audrey Clifford and sister-in-law

Dorothy Leeder were lucky enough to get tickets to the

Roar of the Rings women's semi final in Ottawa. They

also enjoyed lunch in the sponsor's lounge.

Comedy Corner *I requested identification from a department-store

customer who had just written a personal cheque for her

purchase.

After fumbling through her purse, she presented me with

what she said was the only thing that bore both her name

and address.

It was a notice of insufficient funds from her bank.

* I was checking out at the busy supermarket, and the

cashier was having problems. The register ran out of

paper, the scanner malfunctioned, and finally the cashier

spilled a handful of coins. When she totaled my order, it

came to exactly $22. Trying to soothe her nerves, I said,

"That's a nice round figure."

Still frazzled, she glared at me and said, "You're no bean

pole yourself!"

A level tablespoon of cookie dough

creates a perfect one inch ball.

Freezing popovers is easy. Pierce each freshly baked

Cool them on a wire rack wrap tightly and freeze.
