From the President’s Desk…………….. Hello Logan Alumni and Friends,
I‟m Jane Molstad, your new Alumni Association President for 2010-2011. Those of you who
attended Logan from 1971-2002 probably know who I am. Although I‟m not a Logan graduate, I
did spend 31 years in the halls (and gyms) of both Logan High School buildings and am now a
Ranger Faculty Alumnus. My husband and three sons are also Logan Alumni.
I‟d like to thank Ron Payne for the great job he did as last year‟s president and I will look to him
for advice over the coming year. I also would like to praise Dave Turk, Nancy Casper, and Dan
Wilhelm for the job they did as officers as well, and am pleased to have Dan returning as treasurer.
There have been some changes in the Board as well. Thanks to Nicole Friell, Ken Garves, Heath
Graves, Carol Lunke, Tom Weis, and Betty Woodruff for all their hard work during their terms.
Stepping up to replace them will be Dave Bartlett, Dick Cagle, Dianah Colburn, Dixie
Fladhammer, Judy Seifert, and Karen Wozney.
I don‟t want to forget the returning board members who have already played a huge role in support-
ing Logan and are continuing as members for another year or two. Thanks to Jim Berg, Joe Bond,
Nancy Casper, Dana Gibbons, Geri Guy, Linda Himmel, Joe Maier, Doug Martin, Nancy
McMullin, Scott Mihalovic, Pat Nelson, Ron Payne, Nancy Proctor, Bruce Radde, Dave Turk and
Dan Wilhelm. Feel free to contact any of us with your ideas and concerns about the organization.
I know I speak for all of the board members when I say we are extremely pleased that the Alumni
Scholarship recipients have grown from four in 1999 to nine in 2010, as well as five more made
possible by generous alumni—and the value of each scholarship has steadily increased! Although
the proceeds from the Ranger Rally were lower this year, memberships, donations, and memorials
continue to fuel the scholarship growth. Thanks to all of you for supporting Ranger Grads and
Logan High School. I‟m looking forward to the next year as your Alumni Association president.
AND…………… IT’S STILL A GREAT DAY TO BE A RANGER!
THE RANGER REUNION NEWSLETTER OF THE LOGAN HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
NEW WEB ADDRESS— http://sdlax.net/logan/alumni/— NEW WEB ADDRESS
Issue No. 20
October 2010
Thanks to a very alert alumnus with a good memory, we were told that the picture in the October 2009 edition of the newsletter was incorrect. It was
actually an old lithograph picture that was upside down and backwards. This picture may look more familiar to you.
Generations of Rangers! We’re looking for families who have had multiple generations graduate from
Logan High School. Trace it back— did your grandmother graduate from Logan?
Your great-grandfather? Send us your story. It doesn’t have to be in-depth.
Let’s see how many families we can feature!
THE RINIKER/BESL FAMILIES
We have a long history with Logan beginning with my mother, Charlotte (Sieber) Riniker,
who graduated in 1935. My father was from Iowa but had two siblings that graduated from
Logan: Robert Riniker (Class of 1948), and Jean (Riniker) McGuire (Class of 1951)
Our family begins with:
Shirley (Riniker) Besl Class of 1958
Scott Besl Class of 1980
Debra (Besl) Burhoe Class of 1982
Tim Besl Class of 1983
Beth (Greene) Besl (Tim‟s wife) Class of 1985
Randy Besl Class of 1986
Heather (Woods) Besl (Randy‟s wife) Class of 1990
Corey Besl Class of 1988
Patricia (Riniker) Mahin Class of 1959
Rita (Riniker) Dubay Class of 1961
Raymond Riniker Class of 1963
Adrian (Riniker) Kolpetcki Class of 2000
Ben Kolpetcki (Adrian‟s husband) Class of 2000
Richard Riniker Class of 1965
If all goes well, there will be a “Besl” graduating from 2012-2017
with three to follow in 2019, 2021, and 2024
Thank you, Shirley (Riniker) Besl, for sharing this with us!
Let us know what you’re up to! We want to make the Ranger Reunion an informative venue for alumni and
friends to stay in touch with everyone from the past to the present.

Onward Logan !
Thanks to all of you for your artistic
talent and hard work!
How do we measure the success of the Ranger Rally? This year we offered all of the same events and prizes as we have
in the past with some very happy prize recipients. The winner of the truck was in dire need of decent transportation and
the winner of the ladies ring is a faithful supporter of Ranger Rally since its inception (stories on p.7). It is exciting for
the board to know that we make a difference in peoples‟ lives
Ranger Rally attendees find it a great opportunity to renew friendships and have a fun time. This year attendance was
down, costs were up, but the income from the event was enough to cover the costs and we were again able to add to the
endowment fund for the scholarships we provide.
The board is concerned about the decline in participation and income and is reviewing the future of Ranger Rally. We
are interested in continuing to make this event a rewarding and profitable venue and would appreciate your suggestions/
comments/thoughts on the continuation of the Rally. The tentative date for Ranger Rally 2011 is Saturday, June 11,
pending board approval at the November 15 meeting. Please send your response to me before the November meeting
via e-mail: dturk@ beaverbuilderssupply.com. Slight changes to Ranger Rally have been made over the years and we
may need to make further changes, so your input would be much appreciated
The bottom line is to serve you, the alumni and friends, as a leader in maintaining your connection to Logan and to
continue to provide scholarships for Logan students. We would like to again thank all of our supporters and sponsors,
and ask for your continued support in making Logan High School the best of the best.
We would like to extend a very special THANK YOU to Dianne Gebhart and Nels Aakre, retired Logan faculty, who were
at Fox Hollow, and wandered the grounds at Ranger Rally all day/night long and took so many great pictures.

Twila was just thrilled with her beautiful ring. We asked her to
send us a short bio, and she sent us an account of her life story,
from her time at Logan till now, at 90 years of age.
Carrie works for the DNR and rotates working from the service cen-
ter in Rhinelander and the service center in Baldwin. Because of all
this driving, her 1993 Toyota truck had accumulated 273, 000
miles around the time of the Rally. "Yota" was getting pretty worn
down with all the traveling, so Carrie was really hoping some bit of
good fortune would come her way to replace the truck , but she never
thought something like this would happen! As fate would have it,
she got a new truck! Here‟s what Carrie had to say:
“I still can‟t believe I won! I have never won anything this big
before! I currently work for the Department of Natural Resources as
a Water Management Specialist where I regulate and issue permits
for projects along navigable waterways and wetlands . I am assigned
to 6 counties, which keeps me quite busy. With all the driving I do,
my new truck now has almost 8,000 miles on it. I love the color, and
it gets 30mpg! It runs and handles great and has all the options I like
in a vehicle--especially the Sirius Radio, which I plan to subscribe to
after the 6-month trial offer ends. I would also like to add; the
education I received at Logan really prepared me for college and
beyond. Logan has a lot of great teachers such as Mr. Thienes
(Chemistry), Mr. Myra (Biology), Mr. Keller (Music), and Ms.
Gebhart (IMC), just to name a few, which really helped me achieve
my goals and develop good lifelong learning habits. Thanks to all of
you! On a personal note: I have a small farm just outside of Eagle
River in Sugar Camp where I live with my two horses. I enjoy trail
riding, playing hockey, running in 5K races and hunting. I went
turkey hunting for the first time this spring and got a turkey and the
decoy with a single shot! Regretfully, I did not make it to my 30th
class reunion due to other obligations, but plan to attend next year‟s
Ranger Rally!
Carrie
I am a native of South Dakota, but was raised and schooled in
Wisconsin. I left elementary school and was “dropped‟ into a
class at Logan High School for what would now be known as
Middle School. I have no idea if schools were crowded in 1932,
but there we were. You can imagine a group of one-room class
students being placed in a high school routine. We were the enter-
tainment of the upper classmates. Always in a panic mode, run-
ning from class to class, floor to floor, while carrying every book
we thought we would need before the final bell. Two years later,
all settled into the routine, we entered high school. I look back on
that as our survival period. Four years later, we were accepting
each and every congratulation as we graduated in January, 1938.
As I grew older, my school years had more meaning. It was no
longer class by class, and subject by subject that crammed my
mind, but was the overall “growing up.” I married and had a son
the year before Pearl Harbor. A daughter came along at the end of
the war. We moved to Washington state for employment and fol-
lowed the construction of irrigation dams and canals. My educa-
tion expanded with that life as we lived in company housing
among families from all over the country. Ideas, attitudes, and
conversing with people of other dialects/cultures proved how iso-
lated I had been. When the children were well established at
school I took a civil service exam and hired on as a postal clerk. I
left the job as postal clerk when we moved to California. I worked
for the next ten years for a physician who had just opened his pri-
vate practice He contracted cancer, passed away, and the business
was shut down. I then hired on as office manager for a medical
clinic where I worked until I retired. In 1979, my husband retired
and wanted to move to a good fishing spot so we moved to Cres-
cent City, a small logging and fishing town in northern California.
I joined the hospital volunteers which keeps me busy to this day.
At 90 years of age, I remain mentally alert, I think, but depend on
a wheelchair for ambulation. I suffer no pain and am able to
freely volunteer. My husband passed away several years ago. I
continue to live alone, but with my two children freely giving ad-
vice. The worm turns. I hear much of the same things that I told
them years ago.

LOGAN HIGH ALUMMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS The Alumni Board is pleased to report on its Perpetual Scholarship Fund. The fund is managed by Dustin Cunningham at Trust Point
(formerly North Central Trust). The funds are invested in a diversified portfolio.
The earnings from the Perpetual Scholarship Fund will fund scholarships for Logan High School graduates who are going on to some
form of higher education. This fund has been established and is managed so it will provide scholarship funds for Logan students as long
as Logan exists.
The fund value has risen consistently since its inception thanks to friends and alumni of Logan High. The 8th Annual Ranger Rally and
the many new alumni and friends that joined as members allowed the Board to also invest another $10,000 to this fund. These contribu-
tions and the interest from our previous investments bring the fund total to $316,484.17 as of Oct 15, 2010.
Because of the increasing cost of post-high school education, one of the most important goals
of the Logan Alumni Association is to support the continued education of Logan students.
Thank you for all the support for this endeavor from the alumni, friends, and Logan family.

How many people can say they have worked their entire life at one place? Pat Mulrooney can. After 35 years of
teaching service to Logan High School, Pat retired at the conclusion of the 2009-2010 school year. Over the
course of his career, he became the embodiment of Ranger spirit and pride, both in the classroom and on the
track. His dedication to our school spanned two high school buildings and two generations of students. His
career is worth a look back.
Patrick (Pat) Mulrooney was born and raised in Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin. His father, John, served as the
Superintendant of Schools, while his mother, Glee, stayed at home raising Pat, his brother, and three sisters. Pat
was an excellent student and a natural athlete in high school. It was his size, however, that led to one of Pat‟s
greatest lucky breaks. During his sophomore year, Pat, who was small for his age, took a big hit on the football
field. To avoid crippling injuries, Pat decided to switch to cross country. He‟s been running ever since.
After graduation in 1967 from Prairie du Chien, Pat ran up the river to La Crosse to attend college at UW-L. He
earned a degree in Political Science and Health and became captain of the cross country team. Following gradua-
tion from college, Pat found his permanent home on the North Side of La Crosse. “It was one of the great privi-
leges of my career to work at both buildings,” said Pat, reminiscing on his time as educator for Logan High
School. “You could really connect the old with the new.” Pat‟s long tenure at Logan included teaching sections
of U.S. History and Economics, but Mr. Mulrooney is most known for teaching Government. Being in Pat‟s
Government class became a rite of passage for generations of Logan kids. His exploits inside Logan are equaled,
though, by his successes outside on the track. Over the course of 37 years as a cross country coach and 21 years as
a Track coach (he continues to serve as a coach in both sports today), Pat has seen state champions crowned and
helped countless athletes reach their potential. One highlight in particular, is his 1989 cross country team that took
second place in the state, losing to the champion by only two points.
When asked what the greatest part of spending 35 years at Logan was, Mr. Mulrooney said, “Making connections
with so many wonderful people, both students and staff.” This year, Pat kicked off his first year of “retirement”
with a surprise speech to the entire student body on opening day. Since then, he has been spotted around school
working on cross country as early as 6:00 AM. There is no doubt that all who have known Pat are equally grateful
for the opportunity to “connect” with him. He‟s part of our family…the Logan family.

David Bartlett I graduated from Logan in 1964. My wife, Sue, teaches at Sparta Jr. High School. I have one son, Matthew, age 27, who lives in La Crosse, and one daughter, Katie, age 29, who lives in Chicago. I retired from Trane Company in 2005. My hobbies include golfing, hunting and fishing.
Dick Cagle I went into the US Navy right after graduating from Logan High School in 1958. After serving 22 years I retired in 1980 as a QMC(SS). I was the Assistant Navigator aboard nuclear submarines. Most of my service was spent aboard submarines; starting out in the older WWII diesel submarines, and progressing to the nuclear subs as I neared retirement. The highlight of my time in the Navy was as Associate Professor of Naval Science at Villanova University NROTC, Villanova, PA. After Naval service, I started work at the La Crosse County Sheriff's Department. Most of my administrative duties were as court officer and jail officer. I was the first ap-pointed Huber Law officer for the County. I retired from La Crosse County in 1996. My wife, Darlene (Ellis), who graduated from Logan in 1959, and I travel the U.S., Canada, and parts of Mexico. We spend most of our winters in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas and return to La Crosse in the spring. We very much enjoy Logan's annual Ranger Rally and have volunteered over the years. What we enjoy most is seeing the students from the years before and after we graduated that we wouldn’t see at class reunions. We have four children that are also Logan grads and they plan their “homecomings” around the Ranger Rally.
Dianah Colburn I am a 1992 graduate of Logan. My husband , Mark, graduated in 1989. We have a hobby farm in rural
Galesville, Wisconsin, and enjoy spending time with our three dogs and two horses. I have worked for the past
eleven years as an Administrative Services Coordinator for J.F. Brennan Co., Inc. My interests include, read-
ing, shopping, outdoor activities, traveling, photography, crafts, decorating, and spending time with family and
friends.
If you are interested in serving on the Logan Alumni Association Board of Directors, please contact

Your efforts benefit Logan High School graduates.
Dixie Fladhammer I graduated from Logan in 1965. I married Tim Fladhammer who taught in the La Crosse School District for 34
years before retiring in 2000. We have lived in the West Salem area for the past 40 years. We have two chil-
dren; daughter, Shelayne Dunn, who is an LMC director for the La Crosse School District, and son, Scott, who
is an engineer for Assist Technology in Kenosha. We have five wonderful grandchildren. I worked for fifteen
years as an Interior Decorator, and the past twenty years as a Safety & Environmental Administrator for Cen-
turytel/Centurylink. I loved my job but it did require a lot of travel by car or by air. I retired March 1st of this
year and my husband and I are enjoying our retirement and traveling. I love to dance, laugh, and have fun
spending time with family and friends.
Judy Seifert I graduated from La Crescent High School in 1964. I retired from the Fleming Company and am now working part time at the Onalaska Culvers. I have two sons and four granddaughters.
Karen Wozney I graduated from Logan in 1984. I attended UW-La Crosse and graduated with a degree in Business Admini-stration. I have worked at Gundersen Lutheran for the past 23 years. I have two children; Rachel Jacobson, who graduated from Logan in 2008 and is a junior at Winona State University in nursing, and Madelyn, who is an 8th grader at Logan Middle School.
