rNotice to contributors

Study of this notice may accelerate publication by three months.

Papers offered to The Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science should be senteither to Prof. H. G. Callan, Dept. of Natural History, The University, St. Andrews,Fife, or to Dr. J. R. Baker, Dept. of Zoology, University Museum, Oxford. Thejournal exists for the publication of new material. If any preliminary communicationon the subject of a paper offered to the editors has been sent to another journal, a noteto this effect must accompany the manuscript.

Manuscripts must be in widely spaced typescript throughout (not more than 13lines in 10 cm). It is particularly important that lists of references, legends to figures, and tables should be widely spaced.

Manuscripts must be fully corrected by the author. A charge will be made forexcessive correction in proof.

Capital letters should be used sparingly. They must not be used in titles or sub-titles, except where absolutely necessary.

All manuscripts must be accompanied by a Summary, in no case exceeding 500 words. The summary must not repeat the information contained in the title. It should con-tain no illustration or table and should be intelligible by itself, without reference toillustrations or tables in the body of the paper. It must be a brief statement of thechief results obtained, not a mere list of subjects discussed. It must be placed at thebeginning of the paper, after the author's name and postal address.

Papers should be as concise as possible. Extensive introductory matter and long dis-cussions, commonly required in theses for university degrees, should not be included inthe manuscript. Division of the matter by sub-titles must follow a consistent plan.Excessive subdivision should be avoided. Not more than three grades of sub-titles willbe printed.

There must not be a separate section of the paper entitled 'Conclusions'. The mainconclusions should be given in the summary.

Authors are asked to write in simple, grammatical English. Technical terms mustnecessarily appear in a scientific paper, but 'scientific' jargon should be avoided.Latin tags such as Vide supra should not be used. Special care should be taken toavoid the piling up of complex adjectival phrases in front of the nouns they qualify.Carefully chosen prepositions should be used freely, to show clearly the logicalinterrelations of the nouns.

Footnotes must not be used, except in tables and appendices. Acknowledgementsmust be placed at the end of the paper, before the references.

References must be given in alphabetical order of authors' surnames. The namesof journals should be abbreviated in accordance with The world list of scientificpublications. The following examples may be useful:

Amer. J. Anat.; Anat. Rec.; Arch. exp. Zellforsch.; Biol. Bull, Wood's Hole; Biol.Rev.; Cellule; Chromosoma; C.R. Soc. Biol. Paris; Exp. Cell Res.; Int. Rev. Cytol.;J. cell. comp. Physiol.; J. exp. Biol.; J. exp. Zool.; J. Histochem. Cytochem.; J. Morph.;J. R. micr. Soc.; Nature, Lond.; Proc. Roy. Soc. B; Protoplasma; Quart. J. micr. Sci.;Quart. Rev. Biol.; Science; Stain Tech.; Z. wiss. Mikr.; Z. Zellforsch.

These abbreviations should be used for journals not mentioned in the World list:Arch. d'Anat. micr.; Biochim. biophys. Acta; Bull. Micr. appl.; J. biophys.

biochem. Cytol.; J. Cell Biol.; J. Ult. Res.

JUNG* MICROTOMEfor the, HARDEST and toughest specimensThe JUNG K Microtome willsection for microscopic examin-ation many of the hardest andtoughest objects such as unde-calcified bone and other hardbiological specimens, hardwoodof all varieties, plastics, rubberand even metal.A powerful vice grips objects upto 80 x 50 mm. The object feedmechanism slides without playin the centre of massive dovetailguideways. The cutting tool isfirmly screwed in a heavy andrigid bridge straddling theguideways. Every componentand every detail of constructionhas been designed to give the utmost rigidity and freedom of backlash, yetproviding a smooth cutting action.Automatic object feed can be adjusted in steps of 1 to 30 microns. Theobject block automatically lowers for the return stroke and rises again forthe forward stroke.Drive is either manual, facilitated by a large handwheel with reductiongear, or by means of a steplessly variable electric motor.Among accessories, a freezing table is available with freezing gun. Aseparate knife holder enables the use of conventional microtome knives. Please write or telephone for full details and illustrated brochure.
