BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES OF N. C. STATE'S COACHES

WILLIAMS (DOC) NEWTONThree years ago this fall Williams (Doc) Newton steppedinto the hardest football job in these parts and came out withflying colors. His North Carolina State teams haven't won any champion—ships, but they have pleased the alumni with their fightingspirit and colorful football that have made them "look betterin defeat than previous State teams looked in victory." ,Coach Newton is a native North Carolinian. His fatheris a retired Baptist minister of Thomasville. An athletehimself, the personable State coach Was sought after as a prepschool player while at Cluster Springs Academy-in Virginia. From there he went to the University of South Carolina and theninto professional baseball to become a member of the famousBaltimore Orioles of the late Jackaunn's time. The World War broke into his athletic career and he servedthe last days of the conflict as an Army captain, missing theopportunity of going overseas. After the Armistice was signed hecontinued his baseball and in 1924 took up coaching as a pro-fession at Jones Valley high school, near Birmingham, Ala.In 1925 he began his college coaching career, serving until1950 at Birmingham—Southern and Howard Colleges in Birmingham asan assistant and Freshman coach. The year 1951 found him on the University of Tennesseestaff as a scout and the following year he accepted the positionof head coach of football at Davidson College, bringing withhim Gene McEver, the All-American halfback from U. T.V For five years he coached Davidson teams to their greatesthalf-decade of football success. Twenty-three times his teamreturned victories against seventeen defeats and five ties.Signed to a five-year contract at State during one of thebitterest feuds in Wolfpack history—~a feud over a previouscoach that divided the alumni, students and faculty into twodistinct factions--Newton was greeted by nine boys the firstday he called spring football practice. His patient, humanWays of handling young athletes won him the admiration of allwith whom he came in contact and by fall he had rejuvenatedthe Wolfpack, which went against its opponents in such a dot-ermined way that it gave State its best football record in fivegags. Only three games.were lost as against five wen and one10 .And the next spring when he sounded the call for candi-dates 105 players reported! ‘Coach Newton pledged to the students, faculty and peopleof Raleigh that the State team would play the finest opponentsavailable and'during his regime Carnegie Tech, University ofDetroit, University of Tennessee, Duquesne University and.University of Alabama have been added to the‘Wolfpack footballprogram. , ’

It was an eleven that lacked just a little of beinga truly great team.

Coach Newton teaches a variation of the Warner and Tenn—, eSSee systems of football. He introduced what is known as theultra-unbalanCed line formation, which he uses with the familiarsingle-wing backfield formation. In the ultra-unbalanced lineonly one player is on the weak side of the snapperback. Criticssay that this gives the middle of the line considerable advant-age in blockinfl over the forewall whose snapporback is in thecenter of the line. '

The Wolfpack coach is an expert baseball coach and usuallydevotes his summers to coaching American Legion junior baseballteams. He is a golfer of note and can be counted on to makethe championship flight in almost any tournament. He is a PiKappa Phi, is married to the former Miss Annie Dee Rogers ofBirmingham and has two children, Jean and Jimmy.
