To all of my fellow disciples and soon to be friends in Seneca: July 2010

Deep gratitude is the emotion that fills me in these days of transition. How can I be anything but deeply grateful to you and to God for the gift and honor you bestow on me in the call to become your pastor? This is the kind of gratitude that is filled with awe and wonder because it comes from outside of us, from a sense that we are all following a call that is beyond ourselves. And so this precious gift is profoundly humbling and evokes in me a pledge to be as faithful and diligent a pastor as God gives me the ability to be. I am excited about what

we can do together, walking with the Spirit, in this amazing adventure called discipleship.

As we begin this journey, I’m anxious to begin putting names and faces together. I look forward to getting to know you and listening to your stories. Those are personal stories as well as the stories that tell of the saints of Seneca Presbyterian Church from 1875 until 2010. I have already heard of your faithfulness and devotion and know that I have much more to learn!

Be patient with me as I complete this transition from one “SPC” to another. My work at Second Presbyterian will culminate with our morning Vacation Bible School the week of July 12. I can’t imagine a better way to say “good-bye” to my friends at Second than surrounded by our children. After that, I plan to spend two weeks in study preparing to become a weekly preacher and prayerfully pondering all that our journey may mean. I will be moving to Seneca the week of August 9 so that I can be ready to be your pastor on August 16. My husband Phil plans to stay in Roanoke until our house sells. I think our cat will be much happier with that arrangement! Of course, no one can know when that sale might happen. We shall be patient and simply trust the Spirit that has led and will continue to lead us. Blessings to all of you, Nancy

As I write this, it’s July 16, exactly one month to the day when our journey together begins. But you have already started walking that journey with me! Your greetings on my birthday were so gracious and warm. Thank you. You are only reinforcing what Richard and the PNC already told me about you – that you are a wonderfully welcoming church family. I remain anxious to begin putting names and faces together. Your church dinner and hymn sing on August 18 will be a great start. I wanted a chance for you to “size me up” before my first opportunity to lead in worship, and that setting is perfect. I will be open to your questions, and I would also like to share some reflections with you as we begin life together. Since I know of your propensity to eat well, this will be a fitting “first date.”

I’m also pleased that I will officially become your pastor on August 29. On that Installation Sunday you will have a chance to meet and hear the senior pastor with whom I have worked for nine years at Second Presbyterian: Dr. George C. Anderson. When I came to Second in 2001, I had served congregations for 23 years, but never served with the same senior pastor for more than about four years. It has been a delight to work with George and he is a delight. He is the son of a pastor, a graduate of St. Andrews Presbyterian College (Laurinburg, NC) and (what we now call) Union Presbyterian Seminary, and has been Senior Pastor of Second since 1998. Thank you for welcoming him to my new church family.

Second Presbyterian “sent me off” on July 11 with a wonderful celebration complete with a bagpiper. The other end of that exit will be a memorable entrance with you. As we are all exiting and entering, I know you will honor Richard well, extending to him a profound sense of gratitude for his great service among you. Since I know him, I know that is true. What a delight it is for me and my family to reconnect with this “old” friend. Our God works in mysterious, marvelous, and surprising ways. I look forward to serving that God alongside you. Blessings to all of you, Nancy

A word from your pastor…

On the Cusp of Easter April 2018

This Presby Press is going to print in the midst of Holy Week. With Easter falling on April 1, there is a good chance you will be reading this before Sunday. I hope it can be one final reminder of the joy of Easter morning traditions at Seneca Presbyterian. They start with our sunrise service that begins at 6:30 a.m. in the Oak St. parking lot. It is there that we

kindle the new fire of Easter dawn and Easter light.

The tradition is ancient and is included in the unique liturgy for Easter known as the Easter Vigil. Similar to the tradition of Christmas Eve, this vigil occurs on Easter Eve – on the night before Easter. A full Easter Vigil includes four parts: The Service of the Light (new fire), the Service of the Word (remembering the great sweep of salvation history, beginning in Genesis), the Service of the Water (where the baptism of new Christians climaxed their period of initiation and study that began with Ash Wednesday), and the Service of the Bread and Cup (where those newly baptized joined with the community for their first taste of Communion).

Throughout all the eight Easters that I have been with you, our Easter sunrise services have been an adaptation of the Easter Vigil format – though greatly abbreviated. Some Easter Vigils can last as long as three hours! Our services have included the lighting of the fire, the telling of our salvation story, and the sharing of communion. But we have always skipped over baptism! For this final Easter with you, I would like to include the Service of the Water by sharing in a time of baptismal renewal. I hope you will find it meaningful as we remember the life giving power of the waters of baptism as we rise through them with Jesus from death into new life.

For now, the forecast for April 1 is rain-free but chilly! So dress appropriately for this unique opportunity for outdoor worship. At the conclusion of the service, you will be blessed with our great tradition of Easter morning breakfast. My thanks to all who will, once again, make Easter morning so very special.

The Season for Saying Good-Bye

I’m fully aware that this is the last Presby Press which I will share with you as your pastor. I have lots of reflections on what that means for me, but I will hold them for my final sermon on April 15. I offer thanks to George Harper who will be our preacher on April 22 and to Richard Caldwell who will serve on April 29. I am your pastor through April 30 so I plan to be in worship on those two Sundays. Since I will be spending the final two weeks cleaning out an office and packing up books, I’m grateful for relief on the preaching front.

Even as I engage in the tasks of leaving, transition tasks continue. The Transition Team of the Session is busy searching for interim leadership. And the Congregational Nominating Committee is completing its work on important nominees. These include the four at-large positions on the 2018-2019 Congregational Nominating Committee and the nominees for the Pastor Nominating Committee. Because of the importance of these votes, I anticipate a combined service of worship so that all can be involved with these elections. Be watching for the news of that congregational meeting to happen sometime in April.

Before these last weeks slip away, I also want to be certain to visit with as many of you as I can, particularly those who cannot join us for worship. Even though I cannot be your pastor after April 30 – because that role will belong to someone else – I can always be your friend and will cherish that gift. You will likely hear me say it often: Seneca Presbyterian Church has given me what no other congregation has, namely the privilege and the trust of being called pastor. For that I shall always be both amazed and deeply grateful.

Our March program of Gentle Tai Chi (Taiji) was timely in that it addressed a request on the survey. Physical therapist, Bonnie Lamarand, joined us in Pastors Hall on March 8th to introduce and guide 38 church members and friends to perform a combination of warm-ups and movements to improve balance, coordination and strength. Twenty-five attendees asked if we could provide an on-going Tai Chi class. We will be working to make this happen! The Health and Wellness team look forward to exploring and implementing more survey—suggested programs.

Health and Wellness update! Your Health and Wellness team sends out a big THANK YOU to the congregation! Women's Retreat

The 9th annual women’s retreat was held March 16th & 17th at Asbury Hills. Twenty—one ladies gathered to enjoy the fellowship, Bible study, good food and the quiet beautiful surroundings.

Rev. Pressley Cox led our group in the retreat theme Rooted in Love. Her love for art was woven into the study and put us all in another space for 24 hours. (Watch for our masterpiece in Knohl Hall soon.) The planned sessions were uplifting spiritually and emotionally.

Free time was filled with hikes, games, conversation and most of all laughs and shared love. I believe we all went away with new and strengthened friendships and a gratefulness for the time together.

Our thanks to Rev. Cox for her expression and teachings of God’s love and to Brenda Thomson who organized and planned the retreat.

Give it some thought…

PW elects and installs officers in May… So the search has begun. PW Council is asking that you as a member of SPC give thought to serving in a leadership role. This may be your way to serve this church and its family. Though circle members often serve in these roles, we welcome all women of SPC. PW wants and needs new thoughts and fresh ideas that come with varied leadership.

We hope you will consider serving. Give myself or any council member a call if you have questions or a desire to serve.

The Ripple ladies debriefed the IF Gathering, an international Christian women’s conference. Ripple of One purchased the tickets to a satellite location in Clemson for the ladies that were able to attend. Our clients loved the message of discipling right where we are. Tonight’s message was finding the Purpose in our Pain. As women, we have the opportunity to experience travail and carry the labor of love. Our moms have sacrificed their bodies to bring life into this world. God says the harvest is plenty, but the workers are few.

We have received our call to enter the Kingdom and do His work. Megan Sanders, Ripple’s Spiritual Care Pastor, discussed the process of surrender to resurrection.

Comparably, a rock becomes a gem through an enormous amount of pressure. The sanctifying and purifying process is potent and contains the potential energy to turn us into gems as well.

But that pressure isn’t always easy and it is definitely not comfortable. After Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit led him into the wilderness to be tested. God’s promise is to add and multiply, not subtract or divide. So we have to have faith in the times of pain, that he will only give and not take. Kenisha, a client, shared 1 Peter 5:10, “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”

There is a process of maturity in the walk of resiliency. We are not measured by the number of times we fall down, but rather the number of times we stand back up.

The elementary-aged kids were able to spend some time in the dirt during one rotation. The Lil’

Ripplers planted the early vegetables: lettuce, garden peas, radishes and turnips. They also played a game of Uno, an item for sale in the Lil Rippler store. Shopping in the store is the third and final station. Our children have not quite mastered the practice of saving, but do have generous hearts. One girl bought a gift basket

because her mom was not feeling well.

From the Treasurer and Finance Committee: As we have been reporting, at the

mid-point of the budget year our contributions were less than expected when the

budget was adopted. This situation was a cause of concern. However, the

congregation, as usual, has responded positively and made additional

contributions. As a result, I am happy to report that with these additional

contributions and with cuts in our budgeted expenses which we have identified

(exclusive of benevolences), we are no longer in a negative situation year to date.

But we have four more months to go in this current budget year. We will be monitoring the situation and

will keep you informed in the Presby Press. Thank you for your continued faithfulness in giving.

Reaching Out to the Community

The generous heart of Seneca Presbyterian Church has opened once again! When we heard there was a need for warm clothing for the homeless, this church family donated 30 bags of coats, sweaters, blankets, scarves, gloves, boots, and cold medicine all delivered to the homeless shelter for distribution. The response at Our Daily Rest was one of surprise and great appreciation!

When we were approached by Ryan Schwarz to ask for assistance in providing monetary donations for the SOAR children to send them on a field trip to the Children's Museum in Greenville, this congregation opened their hearts (and wallets!) and donated $685 for this worthy cause. This means 40 children (at $10 each) will be able to go on the field trip, with enough to put in reserve for the next field trip.

Once again, this church family lives out its mission statement of

"Serving God Through Serving Others."

SEPTEMBER MISSION TRIP – PUTTING OUR FAITH TO WORK

STILL TIME TO JOIN IN

On September 15th of this year, a van or two will pull out of Seneca Presbyterian’s parking lot headed for disaster recovery mission work near the shores of New Jersey. Many people, especially with lower incomes, are still trying to recover from the disastrous Hurricane Sandy of October, 2012. For a variety of reasons their struggle to recover has gone on and on and they need help.

We will leave on Saturday, September 15th, take a day and a half to drive to New Jersey, spending the night in a

motel. We will then work Monday –Friday seeking to help and work with those people still struggling to remake their homes and lives from this devastating “super” storm. On Saturday we will head back home, spend a night in a motel on the way and arrive back in Seneca on Sunday afternoon, September 23rd. During the work week we will stay at Camp Evans, run by Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.

This trip is a chance to put our faith to work. We know the trip is not for everyone but it is open to anyone who is able and may feel called to serve in this manner. It is an exciting opportunity to work with others from our church in a unique and needed manner. We will be asking people to make a commitment by May 1st.

For questions and information contact Richard or Susan Caldwell, by phone (882-7916), by e-mail ([email protected]) or in person. We hope you will consider joining this group from our church in seeking to serve people in need in Christ’s name.

Hello. My name is Emily Douglas. I’m a sophomore at Seneca High School. You

may know me from my work with Vacation Bible School, soup kitchen, and Ripple

of One. While looking for summer programs, I came across one for Harvard

University secondary school. The seven—week program consists of living in the

dorms, meals in the freshman dining hall, two college classes, trips to Ivy League

schools, and emergence into a college community. I applied! I

obtained recommendations from my school, transcripts, and

completed a difficult question/essay portion. Two weeks later, I got the news that I

had been accepted! I was so excited! Now I am facing the financial aspects. I received

a scholarship from Harvard for $7000. However, I am still $5000 short. My mom is a

single parent with three daughters. All of the scholarship searches that I have done

are only for 11th and 12th graders. I am not sure what else to do, so I am reaching out

to the community for help. Any support would be greatly appreciated. You can help

by going to the following secure web site https://www.gofundme.com/

emilysharvardtrip I plan to be a history major and I am already researching colleges.

This would be a wonderful opportunity for me. Thank you for your time and support, Emily Douglas

Goodbye, Rev. Nancy Morris Our pastor Nancy is leaving the service of our church. She is heading back to the state of Virginia. (Or is it a Commonwealth?) But it will be a good long while before we forget her presence here. She is going so her grandchildren know who comes to visit. She should be around often enough that they don’t ask, “Mommy, who is it?” We do wish her well in whatever endeavors which she should choose to be involved. She does well at forming church committees. Presbyterian pastors certainly are well trained to perform the church’s functions. Some great ideas pop up for tasty, filling and inexpensive eating. It can be put together very rapidly, They can have food ready in a jiff. May she always remember the fellowship people. They help to get problems solved. She will remember her broken wings (so to speak) It appears that she healed well. She may be able to write a book about her adventures, When her bones meet the floor made of concrete. You could hear the bones cracking as this occurred. Well, it healed, big deal. The book could be entitled, ”Who pushed the pastor,” Maybe she could star in this if it is a movie? Wouldn‘t it be groovy? She would be great in the part, Because she had a head start. She should keep smiling as she does her thing. And as Nancy says so often when meeting people, “We warmly welcome you.” And as this poet says, she now should be at ease enough to learn and grow. And to learn what a fisherman knows. KRECH MISSION FUND Being aware of Ed Krech’s desire to help those in need, the Session has set aside $35,000 of the Krech bequest to be used to provide contributions to local ministries and to provide financial assistance to church members who express a desire to participate in mission trips and disaster assistance.

A special committee (Krech Mission Fund Committee) has been established of 6 SPC members to review requests from SPC members for funds. The Session has approved that the Committee may distribute up to $7,000 per year. The Committee will meet once a quarter to review proposals; however they may meet more often if the need arises. The Committee has indicated a strong

preference to receive proposals that in some way personally involve a member, or members, of SPC.

Two mission trips have already been approved by the Committee. The first mission was completed by Donna Beebe and Natalie Schwartz when they accompanied a group from the Presbytery on a Mexican Border Mission to Frontera de Cristo. A presentation of this mission was made at a recent pot luck supper. The second is a mission trip to provide disaster assistance to people whose homes were devastated by hurricane Sandy in New Jersey. This trip will take place in September. Anyone interested in assisting in this mission should contact Richard Caldwell.

A form for request of funds from the Krech Mission Fund can be obtained in the church office. We would encourage everyone to put on their thinking caps and suggest some worthwhile missions.

FIFTH SUNDAY PEANUT BUTTER – Every fifth Sunday

this congregation presents an offering of peanut

butter that will be given to the Golden Corner Food

Pantry. Peanut butter is wonderfully nutritious but

also too expensive to purchase in bulk, so your

contributions are greatly appreciated. Don’t forget your peanut

butter on Sunday.

Join us for an AMAZING week at Rolling River Rampage, SPC's Vacation Bible School. We will have a great time learning exciting Bible stories, playing awesome games, eating, making neat stuff in crafts, dancing to the music, and meeting “Romper the River Otter.” All this happens the week of July 9 – 13, from 9:00 am

'til noon each day. You won't want to miss this Rolling River Rampage Adventure! Please invite your children and grandchildren and the neighborhood kids to discover their strength in God! You can sign up on our web site sprez.org. See you there!
