The Positive Power and Influence Programme®

The Positive Power and Influence Programme has lasting impact for individuals and organisations.

Participants will experience a profound shift in their understanding of influence, their own presence and impact, and how to approach new and challenging situations.

They will open up another world of thinking and behaviour.

The learning process is managed in a climate of trust, support and challenge so that people can be open and honest with themselves and others. They take personal responsibility for their development.

The programme is built around an easily understandable framework, The Situational Influence Model. Instead of listening to theory, learning is driven by direct behavioural feedback, coaching, and skills practise.

Awareness of the important balance between achieving objectives and maintaining or strengthening relationships is reinforced throughout. Participants understand that this balance defines positive influence.

When participants leave they are totally clear about their strengths as an influencer, and know exactly what they can do to develop their impact.

They understand how their values and beliefs can get in the way of their ability to influence, and how to overcome these so that they can be effective and authentic.

They are equipped with a simple toolkit to help them assess situations, including the needs and motivations of others, so that they can plan how to approach any situation and be agile and resilient, whatever they are facing.

And they join a community of influencers who will inspire them to stay connected to their learning and support their continued growth.

Digital material

How is the Programme Structured?

Positive Power and Influence moves briskly through influence concepts to focus participants on mastering influence behaviours, and to applying those behaviours in their own work in the weeks immediately following the programme. This is accomplished through real and personally relevant case studies, small and large group work, exercises, one-on-one trainer coaching, peer feedback and audio-visual feedback.

The Influence Hub

The first step of any Positive Power and Influence programme is registration onto the online Influence Hub. The hub is designed to support participants before, during and after attendance at the group stage of a programme. The Influence Questionnaire, a key component of the Influence Hub requires participants to collect data from associates via an online 360-degree feedback instrument.

Self-Assessment

Data from the Influence Hub is used in conjunction with recorded simulation and in-programme feedback to clearly identify which predominant influence styles each participant tends to use, as well as to highlight their personal opportunities to become more influential.

Digital Interactive material

During the programme, participants are supported with the use of digital programme material on iPads, removing the need for bulky manuals, and allowing interaction with exercises, access to online resources including their personal Influence Hub, and the use of the video camera to record and playback exercises. All material is available for participants to access after the programme.

Developing Style and Style Flexibility

Participants learn the fundamentals of the influence styles that they use infrequently or ineffectively. They also practise the influence styles with which they are already familiar, learning how to apply them more effectively. Participants thoroughly explore all styles and develop personal learning goals for the remainder of the programme.

Developing Influence Skills

Participants then practise using varied influence styles in relevant and challenging situations, to improve their ability to first diagnose the influence situation, craft an influence strategy using a diagnostic tool, then strategically apply the most effective style.

Application Planning

Participants prepare to apply what they have learned to a real-life influence situation using tailored simulation and intensive feedback from peers and facilitators.

Post-programme support

After the group phase of the programme has finished, The Influence Hub becomes an important tool for participants to revisit their learning and gain access to the range of support tools available to help ensure the learning is embedded. A smartphone app, the Pocket Partner, is free and available to download from the iOS or Android app stores to help people prepare for important influence situations.

Embedding the learning: In addition to post group-phase resources such as the Influence Hub and Pocket Partner app, we recommend additional ways that can help to ensure that the learning from the programme is embedded:

• Action Learning Sets. During the programme, participants are encouraged to form small groups, set up to support each other to overcome some of the influence challenges that they face. After the group phase has been completed, participants should be encouraged to stay in touch with their Learning Set, to practise some of the exercises from the programme so that they don’t revert to their more comfortable influence styles, to share successes and failures, to give each other feedback and to rehearse real upcoming influence situations.

• Self-Directed Learning. After the programme, we make available some of the self-directed learning exercises to participants. This way, people wishing to practise a particular influence style, to redo one of the exercises that they did on the programme or to try a new one, can do so either on their own, with their Action Learning Sets or even with colleagues who haven’t been on the programme yet.

This model lies at the heart of the Positive Power & Influence programme. It describes influence behaviours exactly, in a way that allows us to analyse and understand the way that we, and others, use influence.

It is called the Situational Influence Model because whilst all of the influence Styles that it describes are, in themselves, neutral each Style will be more, or less, effective, depending on the situation that you are trying to influence.

In order to be a truly effective influencer you must be able to choose the best Style for any situation, and use that Style skilfully.

There are three layers to the Situational Influence Model: Energy, Style, and Behaviour.

Energy

In order to be influential you must have Energy. Energy is the potential power that you bring to bear on any situation.

In order to influence effectively you need to have an Influence Objective and use your Energy to achieve it.

You can use your Energy in three ways: Push, Pull, and Move Away.

Push Energy is used when you move another person towards your Influence Objective. It’s about what you, the influencer, think and feel, and what you want. It’s about expressing that to another person in a way that shapes their subsequent behaviour.

When used well, people may refer to you as dynamic, someone who drives things forward. If you overuse Push Energy, or use it badly, or in the wrong situations, others may feel backed into a corner. They may describe you as ‘pushy’.

Pull Energy is when you work with the other person to draw them towards your Influence Objective. It’s about focusing on other people and what they need, want, or expect of you. Whilst you may not agree with them, you genuinely want to understand what they are thinking and feeling.

When used well, people may feel drawn to you and to want to work with you. If you overuse Pull Energy, or use it badly or in the wrong situations, others may start to feel ‘sucked in’ or manipulated.

Moving Away Energy is when you take your Energy out of a situation.

If you take your energy out of a situation tactically and temporarily, it will be seen as constructive. If you do it unconsciously or as a way of abandoning your Influence Objective, it will be perceived as unproductive.

The Situational Influence Model

Style & Behaviour

Each Influence Style is made up of Behaviours. Behaviours are seen and felt by others. They are what you say and do. A Style is the culture or climate created by the Behaviours.

When you use the Behaviours within a Style well, and with intent, you are more likely to be influential and have the impact that you intend.

If you use the Behaviours poorly, or without intent, you are likely to confuse others and your impact will be diminished.

Blended Learning Programmes3 day group phase

‘Tailor the journey to suit your schedule.’

The Blended Learning Programme is right for you if you want:

• Continuous application of learning in the workplace

• The flexibility to learn theory and concepts in your own time and pace

• A shorter group phase that throws you straight into the experiential learning

• A deeper understanding of virtual-influence

Positive Power and Influence is a life-changing learning experience.

Participants learn greater impact and control over situations and events. They learn to hit business targets, whilst also maintaining and strengthening relationships – never sacrificing one for the other.

In short: they learn to have greater influence.

Built on years of rigorous, peer-reviewed studies, at its heart is this simple observation: the most effective employees demonstrate influence style flexibility.

Although the Programme has a long-established heritage, it has remained radical and flexible, always changing and developing, yet retaining its core principles.

Immersive Learning Programmes5 day group phase

The minimum charge is for 8 people.

Excluding facilitator travel, subsistence and accommodation where necessary - there would be a team of 2 for up to 12 participants and 3 facilitators for 13-18 participants.

Typical organisational goals might include:

• Reduce silos and create a culture where people are skilled at having honest conversations

• Empower and build the confidence of staff who may not have positional power

• Help people to use their positional power in a positive way to achieve results

• Develop your high potential staff so that they are skilled in core competencies critical to managing and leading others

In-Company Positive Power and Influence Programmes can be tailored to meet the objectives of an organisation and its people. The programme is extremely flexible and can be run at an organisation’s facility or off-site, can typically accommodate between 8 and 18 participants and are usually have a group phase of 2 or 3 days.

Positive Power and Influence Programmes for in-tact teams will focus more specifically on the types of challenges faced by those teams both externally; with customers, clients and other parts of an organisation, and internally; amongst individuals and groups within a team. In-company Positive Power and Influence programmes attended by people across an organisation are often tailored on an ad hoc basis to meet the real objectives of the individuals on that specific programme.

The modular nature of the programme also allows Positive Power and Influence to be integrated into larger pieces of development work. Many clients run development programmes where Positive Power and Influence makes up one module of development with broader objectives.

Or, clients with more specific development needs find that those needs are better met when they are underpinned by effective influence. The Positive Power and Influence programme can often be the ‘glue’ which holds together development programmes with more targeted objectives.

Chartwell Learning and Development

We began life as an educational publishing company in 1977.

For nearly four decades we have dedicated ourselves to delivering positive and profound change in the individuals, teams and companies we work with. The company was founded by Kevin Munro, running its first Positive Power and Influence Programme in 1983, which gradually became Chartwell’s flagship programme.

We practise what we preach. Our business philosophy is based on mutual trust and flexibility, which is central to the way we run the Programme and work with our clients. We value our relationships and take pride in keeping things simple – we want our relationships to be transformational rather than transactional.

In other words, we like to minimise small print, so we can concentrate on delivering stimulating and challenging learning experiences.

The core team is based in Brighton, UK, but with our network of committed, highly experienced and professional facilitators, and our community of international partner organisations, we have a global reach.
