Positive Power and InfluenceOpen-Enrolment Virtual Learning Programme

How do you build rapport with stakeholders when you work virtually? How do you ensure your message is conveyed with presence and impact? How do you galvanise and lead your team with clarity and creativity?

We’ve been delivering behavioural skills development sessions in virtual settings since 2016 and we know how effective they can be as a learning environment, adding value to the face to face experience in often unexpected ways. We also know that as the world changes this way of working and learning will become the norm for many of us.

Building on our experience and the feedback of our clients and participants we’ve developed a Virtual Learning suite of programmes. We’ve integrated the theory and experiential learning activities of the Positive Power and Influence programme with the advantages of the virtual environment to create opportunities for people to stretch and refine their behavioural repertoire so that they can be credible, connected, and influential, whatever the context.

We use a mix of individual online work, facilitated group learning, 1:1 coaching, and peer feedback to create a stimulating and challenging journey. We support each participant as they assimilate feedback to identify their learning edge. And by creating a safe learning climate we encourage all participants to experiment and integrate new skills and behaviours so they leave ready to apply their learning straight away.

We expect great outcomes from every programme we deliver but we think our virtual programmes add value in other ways:

• Learning can be integrated and applied between modules.

• Enhanced opportunities to explore cross-cultural perspectives.

• Exploration of climate, connection, and leadership in a virtual environment.

The Positive Power and Influence Programme®: An Overview

The Positive Power and Influence Programme has lasting impact for individuals and organisations.

Participants will experience a profound shift in their understanding of influence, their own presence and impact, and how to approach new and challenging situations.

They will open up another world of thinking and behaviour.

The learning process is managed in a climate of trust, support and challenge so that people can be open and honest with themselves and others. They take personal responsibility for their development.

The programme is built around an easily understandable framework, The Situational Influence Model. Instead of listening to theory, learning is driven by direct behavioural feedback, coaching, and skills practise.

Awareness of the important balance between achieving objectives and maintaining or strengthening relationships is reinforced throughout. Participants understand that this balance defines positive influence.

On completion of the programme participants are totally clear about their strengths as an influencer, and know exactly what they can do to develop their impact.

They understand how their values and beliefs can get in the way of their ability to influence, and how to overcome these so that they can be effective and authentic.

They are equipped with a simple toolkit to help them assess situations, including the needs and motivations of others, so that they can plan how to approach any situation and be agile and resilient, whatever they are facing.

And they join a community of influencers who will inspire them to stay connected to their learning and support their continued growth.

DIAGNOSIS AND THEORY

EXPLORING ALTERNATIVE STYLES

The programme flow is designed with virtual learning best practice at its heart. Each module is limited to a maximum of two hours and there are a range of activities including individual work, facilitated virtual classrooms and 1:1 coaching.

Two experienced consultants facilitate the entire programme so that the facilitator to participant ratio is never more than 1:6. During online classroom modules, virtual breakout rooms enable small group activities so that the sessions remain pacy, interactive and experiential at all times.

Brilliant programme with brilliant content and exceptional trainers with the knowledge and understanding to ensure impact on participants

We can all benefit from learning how to influence well - especially in this new virtual / digital landscape. I can’t recommend this programme highly enough - a fantastic combination of a great influence model, and an environment of challenge and support - you can’t fail to improve!

The way the program is formatted was excellent and worked well virtually.

I think virtual or physical, both are equally effective. Virtually even feels having a closer relationship with the group.

The dynamic is excellent, the model is simple. It is demanding and also short and impressive to see the level reached after 11 sessions of 2 hours. It is building confidence to implement it.

Overall I am pleased with atmosphere, great trainers, with engaging positive attitude, useful insight about myself and very useful tool. It really made a difference.

The facilitators were clear in their communication. They were easy to understand and involved the entire team in the discussions., they pushed us in a positive and respectful atmosphere. I really appreciated that.

Both Trainers were highly effective, clearly very knowledgeable and pushing us constantly to step outside of our comfort zones while also providing practical learning each step of the way.

Overview

• Participants work through individual, 1:1, and group activities designed to support their personal transition towards consolidated behaviour change.

• They learn theory and concepts and develop a shared language and understanding of influence.

• They identify their current use of influence through a number of diagnostic exercises and activities.

• They explore alternative influence Styles and Behaviours and the situational factors to consider when using them.

• Armed with that knowledge and focussed behavioural feedback from facilitators and other participants, they set personal learning goals and work on them in a self-directed process supported by a range of exercises, coaching, and reflective practice.

• Finally, they learn a process that supports the application of their learning back in the real world.

Contracting and Climate

Positive Power and Influence requires participants to be open and honest with themselves and each other. It demands a high degree of self-reflection and a willingness to share experiences, ideas, and feelings.

Facilitators work with the group to co-create a climate that allows every individual to take responsibility for their learning journey so that they can maximise the investment.

It’s important that participants commit to completing individual work and attend every session.

Participants learn a method for giving and receiving constructive behavioural feedback. They are encouraged to hold each other to account throughout the programme.

Theory

Participants are taught about the concepts of positive influence, positional and personal power, and applied influence. They go on to explore the Situational Influence Model, which is the theoretical framework that underpins the programme. Throughout this phase they are encouraged to think about how the theory applies to their own experience.

Diagnosis

The diagnostic phase is an opportunity for participants to understand their current use of influence, how others perceive them, where they feel most comfortable as an influencer, and what internal barriers and blocks get in the way.

They continually recalibrate their use of influence and their impact. To kick-start that process there are group and individual tasks designed to give them a rich set of data to work with.

Exploring Alternative Styles

We compare this phase of the programme to a sports coaching session. It’s an opportunity to take a deep dive into each of the four influence Styles and their component Behaviours.

Following a short instructional input, during which facilitators model the Style and Behaviours, participants undertake short, focussed group exercises that allow them to inhabit each Style and get feedback.

At the end of this phase, participants are aware of all of the behavioural options available to them as an influencer, and understand their own preferences and opportunities to develop impact.

The Participant Journey

Skills Practice

Using consolidated data from their Influence Questionnaires, diagnostic exercises, and in-programme feedback, participants set no more than four SMART personal learning goals.

They explore ways to overcome some of the internal barriers (values and beliefs) that can get in the way of their ability to use a particular Style effectively.

They are given a library of exercises and activities from which they build their own programme. This allows them to tailor their learning journey so that they can achieve their goals. Exercises are designed to facilitate single or multi-skills practice, in a range of situations and relationships, and with large or small groups.

The self-directed approach encourages people to be aware of their own learning style, to take personal responsibility, and to stretch beyond their comfort zone.

At the end of this phase, participants have developed influence Style flexibility and are able to influence in a range of challenging situations. They understand the boundaries of each Style and they continue to notice and challenge their personal reactions.

Application

This phase of the programme is a transition from the learning environment to the real world. Participants work on their own real upcoming situation. They learn how to use a structured process and online tool to plan for influence situations.

At the end of the Application phase, participants understand the importance of having a clear influence objective. They know how to select the influence Style that will give them the best chance of success, and how to develop and execute a plan for action.

Post-Programme

Having gone through the programme participants become part of our alumni network and have access to on-going resources, learning, coaching, and support.

They have lifelong access to all programme materials as well as additional reading and information. They can retake their Influence Questionnaire and continue to assess their development as an influencer. And we offer lots of hints and tips about how to continue overcoming internal barriers, when and where to practise, how to give and receive feedback, and more.

We encourage alumni to stay in contact and give them simple resources so that they can continue to give one another feedback, coaching, support, and challenge.

We offer open enrolment virtual sessions for alumni. These facilitated group sessions are free and they give participants an opportunity to practice influencing skills and get feedback from colleagues and facilitators. They are an extension of the Skills Practice phase of the programme.

The Positive Power and Influence Delivery Process

Overview

• The programme uses a range of delivery methods including individual work, facilitated group learning, 1:1 coaching, peer feedback, and skills practice exercises.

• The learning will always be connected to real life with time to reflect and put things into practice.

• The programme will make use of technologies and tools that support ongoing engagement and make it easier to stay connected.

• The programme will involve both high tech and low tech methods but will always be led by finding the best solution for the learning outcomes.

• The programme will encourage active participation, not just passive watching, listening or reading.

• We will work with you to ensure appropriate branding and integration with your systems.

The Influence Hub

Each participant will have their own online Influence Hub. This will be the centralised platform where they will access all the resources they need.

Their Influence Hub will be set up for their personal programme with tasks and information to guide them towards the group phase, it will also link to all the materials that are used.

Their Influence Hub will all remain open and accessible indefinitely.

Theory

The Influence Hub will take participants through the simple concepts of influence.

These modules are videos and reading with a small number of questions asking participants to reflect on the influence styles and relate them to their own experiences and challenges.

Diagnosis

Participants will undertake a 360 Influence Questionnaire where they will begin to understand which influence styles they use more frequently and their impact as an influencer on others so that they are ready to set their own learning objectives.

Diagnosis also takes place in the first facilitated session in which participants undertake a videoed group exercise.

Skills Practice

All programme material will be available online for participants to access at any time during or after the programme.
